Abstract:To understand how fog influences the characteristics of pollution external insulation, we investigated the discharge patterns of air gaps and clean DC insulators in foggy conditions, through discharge tests of rod-rod air gaps and clean insulators applied with negative DC voltage in foggy conditions. Three tested samples, such as rod-rod air gaps of 0.5 m and 1.0 m long, respectively, and six-unit insulator strings, were adopted. We compared the negative DC flashover voltage Uav and the flashover current between the dry and foggy conditions. Then, by varying the air pressure in the test chamber, we explored the influences of altitude H on the samples' flashover voltages. It is found that Uav of the 0.5 m and 1 m rod-rod air gaps in foggy conditions are 22% and 23.6% higher than that in the dry condition, respectively. Both rod-rod air gaps have similar pressure characteristic exponent n in fog condition to that in the dry condition. In a range of 0~2 000 m, every 1 000 m increment of H will reduce Uav of the 0.5 m and 1 m rod-rod air gaps by 10% and 11%, respectively. Meanwhile, for the insulator strings, Uav is lower in foggy conditions than in the dry condition, and its n is 0.39, which is smaller than that of the rod- rod air gaps. The results can be used as references for researching DC fog discharge and HVDC project external insulation design at high altitudes.
