Abstract:The electrical property of insulation materials used for electrical equipment decreases gradually under electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses, so researches on aging mechanism and life models of insulation materials are of vital significance to insulation life evaluation.Consequently, firstly, we summarized life models under the stresses of electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses based on traditional macroscopic insulation aging models.Secondly, we summarized several insulation aging life models due to micro-defects induced by space charge effects from microscopic aspects.Finally, we put forward the research direction and development tendency of aging models for insulation materials for further research.The advantages/disadvantages of different macroscopic life models were analyzed according to comparisons.And damage effects of space charge on insulation materials (formation and enlargement of micro-voids, occurrence of partial discharge, and initiation and growth of electrical trees inside insulation, etc.) were analyzed from microscopic angle.Life models of insulation materials based on space charge effects were adopted to evaluate life of insulation under DC fields.It is pointed out that researches of insulation life models should focus on micro rather than macro, adopt various advanced microscopic and macroscopic measuring and analysis methods, and tightly combine simulations with experiments, so as to create insulation life models with specific physical meanings and accurate failure time using dynamic analysis methods.
Modeling the Effect of Physical Aging on the Stress Response of Amorphous Polymers Based on a Two-Temperature Continuum Theory

Abstract:Physical aging widely exists in amorphous polymers, which refers to the nonequilibrium structure of amorphous polymers evolving towards the equilibrium state. Aging can significantly influence the thermomechanical properties and subsequently the macroscopic response of polymers. In our recent work, we performed a series of uniaxial compression tests on amorphous thermoplastic poly(ethyleneterephthalate)-glycol (PETG) subject to different annealing temperature and time. The results showed that both annealing time and temperature have a significant influence on the yield strength. Here we apply a two-temperature continuum model to simulate the stress response of PETG with different thermal treatments. The model employs the effective temperature as a variable to characterize the nonequilibrium state. The physical aging is characterized by the evolution of the effective temperature. The effective temperature is also coupled with the viscoplastic deformation to describe strain softening induced by mechanical rejuvenation. The simulation results can reasonably reproduce the main experimental observations with some discrepancies. The possible reasons for the discrepancies between experiments and simulations are also critically analyzed. The theory is also used to simulate the response of amorphous glassy polymers in the creep and strain-rate-switching tests. The model successfully captures the important features of experimental observations in the literature.
Research on Deterioration Mechanism of Oil-paper Insulation of 220 Kv Current Transformer

Abstract:The electric and thermal combined deterioration mechanism of the oil-paper insulation of the 220 kV current transformer with different thermal aging times is investigated. The breakdown strengths and breakdown time are obtained with different dwelling times. Furthermore, the life exponents under different temperatures and different aging times are evaluated by a step-by-step increasing voltage test. Finally, the four multi-factor aging models about the remaining life, the electric field, and the temperature are developed. It is shown that the breakdown voltages and the breakdown time decrease rapidly with the increase of the temperature or the thermal aging time, whereas the breakdown time increases with the increase of the dwelling time. The life exponent of the oil-paper is more sensitive to the thermal aging at room temperature, whereas it is more sensitive to the temperature compared to the thermal aging when the temperature exceeds 50 °C. The expected life of the oil paper decreases with the increase of the temperature and thermal aging time. Moreover, the remaining life is inversely related to the electric field and the temperature in the three multi-factor aging models. CRINE model has the best fitting accuracy among the three models. The results can provide theoretical support for the safe operation of the 220 kV current transformer.

Abstract:Long-term illumination can damage the mechanical properties of high strength fiber composites, resulting in the material aging and loss of mechanical properties. To reveal the mechanism of ultraviolet- (UV-) induced damage, in this paper, a nonlinear constitutive model is developed to describe the elastic and inelastic deformation behavior of high strength fibers under UV-radiation and mechanical loadings. Two internal variables are employed to measure the effects of damage caused by UV-radiation and by mechanical loadings, respectively. The Helmholtz free energy function and the evolution equations of these two internal variables are investigated elaborately and given explicitly for high strength fibers. The proposed theoretical model is then applied to analyze the mechanical degradation of high-performance high strength fibers under uniaxial tension. The modulus and strength of the material predicted by the theoretical model match the aging experimental results rather well, which verifies the rationality and accuracy of the present model. This model is expected to predict the evolution of mechanical properties of high-strength fibers under UV-radiation, which can also provide a theoretical basis for the development of anti-UV technology of fiber reinforced composites.

Having divided it into the normal aging and the abnormal aging, fuzzy theory is applied to assess the degree of aging and whether it is normal aging or abnormal aging. Abstract:The condition and health of large oil-immersed power transformers' insulation have a direct impact on the safety and stability of the power grid. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the aging characteristics of oil–paper insulation in power transformers. In this study, we developed a computational model for reclosing current calculation and multiphysics coupling models for magnetic-circuit-force, electrostatic field, and temperature field simulations. The calculated aging resulted in a mechanical stress of 8.71 MPa, an electric field strength of 2.26 × 106 V/m, and a temperature of 113.7 °C. We conducted combined electrical–thermal–mechanical aging tests on the oil–paper insulation and measured various insulating paper performance parameters at different aging stages. Our study revealed that both the mechanical and electrical properties of the insulating paper deteriorated in both aging groups. However, the changes were more pronounced in the electrical–thermal–mechanical aging group compared to the electrical–thermal aging group, indicating that mechanical stress accelerated the aging process of the insulating paper. In the early stages of aging, the rate of performance changes in the electrical–thermal aging group was similar to that in the electrical–thermal–mechanical aging group. However, as the aging time increased, the degradation of performance induced by mechanical aging became more significant. This suggests that the insulating paper's resistance to mechanical damage, specifically short-circuit resistance, noticeably decreased after prolonged aging.

Abstract:Epoxy resin (EP) exhibits excellent electrical and mechanical properties, which make it a promising material for insulation in high-voltage power modules. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to thermo-oxidative aging of EP, ultimately resulting in irreparable damage to the insulation. This study aims to analyze the impact of aging on EP dielectric properties and establish a model for assessing the aging state. Firstly, the surface morphology of EP before and after thermo-oxidative aging was observed, followed by testing the frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) curves of the sample. Subsequently, the electric field stress distribution and overall dielectric loss characteristics of the power module were studied under different aging degrees and voltage frequencies. Through decomposing FDS curves, the study revealed how thermo-oxidative aging affects the dielectric properties, and an evaluation model of aging state was constructed. The results indicate that aging can significantly increase the total dielectric loss and space charge polarization loss of the power module. The dielectric characteristic parameters corresponding to the space charge polarization were selected to establish an aging evaluation model, and the evaluation error is less than 0.064.

Abstract:Solid insulation in gas insulated switchgear (GIS), like the basin insulator, is vital for supporting high-voltage conductors, isolating GIS compartments, and providing ground insulation. Multi-factor accelerated aging tests play a crucial role in evaluating GIS solid insulation condition and predicting its lifetime. Yet, there’s less research on mechanical stress-induced aging compared to electrical and thermal stress, and even fewer studies on their combined effects. Intending to achieve a more precise assessment of the aging status and lifetime prediction of GIS solid insulation, a series of cylinder insulator specimens are specially designed, as well as a three-factor aging test platform established involving electrical, thermal and vibration components in this study. And the aging effects and mechanisms of these three factors on GIS solid insulation are subsequently analyzed. The results indicate that electrical, thermal, and mechanical factors all have significant impacts on the deterioration of the solid insulation materials. The application of thermal-mechanical stress exacerbates the potential degradation risks of the polymer internal structure under high electrical field conditions, leading to a significant reduction in the lifetime of GIS equipment.

Abstract:In present work, a series of thermal‐oxidative (TO) aging tests and mechanical property tests are carried out on our previously developed VEM used for structure vibration control. A mathematical model for describing the mechanical behavior of TO aging VEM is developed by combining the statistical model of molecular chains and the theory of chemical kinetics. Based on the test data, the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model are verified, and the sensitivity of the parameters is analyzed. Viscoelastic materials (VEMs) made from rubber polymer will inevitably age due to the interactions with the harmful environment during service life, thus reducing the reliability of viscoelastic (VE) damping equipment installed in building structures. In order to understand and be able to predict the degradation of VE damping equipment, it is imperative to comprehensively study the influence of aging on the mechanical properties of VEMs. In this paper, a series of thermal‐oxidative (TO) aging tests and mechanical property tests are conducted on our previously developed VEMs to study effects of TO aging on the molecular chain structure and corresponding changes of macroscopic mechanical properties of VEMs. By classifying molecular chains of VEMS into elastic chains and free chains, the effects of different chemical reactions during TO aging on these two main chains and corresponding changes on macroscopic mechanical behaviors of VEMs are analyzed. This facilitates formulating a mathematical model that can characterize the mechanical behavior of TO aging VEMs. In conjunction with the experimental data, the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model are compared and verified. Sensitivity analyses of parameters involved in the proposed model are then performed. The experimental results demonstrate that the TO aging can degrade the deformation capability and harden the modulus of VEMs, which may adversely affect the performance of VE damping devices. The parameter analyses depict that the TO aging affects the macroscopic mechanical behavior of VEMs by altering the relative number and configuration of free chains and elastic chains as well as their respective contributions to the total stress of VEMs. The results point to the high accuracy of the proposed model in representing the strain–stress behavior of VEMs under different aging conditions.

Abstract:The aging of stator insulation of large generators has great relation with appearance and development of micro defects inside the insulation ,and deterioration of epoxy. In this paper, Thermogravimetry (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) analysis are applied to the study on the aging of stator insulation of large generators. The results show that, compared with that of the sound parts, epoxy content and starting oxidation temperature of the defective parts presented much more remarkable changes in its physical and chemical performance. In detail, its content and starting-temperature of oxidation decreased obviously; furthermore, its decomposition-activation energy DE of epoxy in the defective parts increased evidently. It is considered that the aging of epoxy caused by multi-stresses is the main reason for the generation and development of defects and the final aging of the main insulation structure of large generators.

Abstract:Fatigue failure of materials has a considerable impact on the safety of equipment in service. In this study, axially tensile and low cycle fatigue tests were conducted on a low alloy steel after accelerated thermal aged at 450 °C for 10,000 h. The experimental results indicate that the ultimate and yield strengths increase moderately, while the fatigue life of specimens experience a slight decrease in this circumstance. The fracture analysis demonstrates that the bainite breaking facilitates the fatigue crack initiation and propagation after thermal aging, which is accompanied by a decrease in plastic strain amplitude. Therefore, the plastic strain amplitude is considered as an indicator of thermal aging in fatigue life modeling for the low alloy steel. Finally, a novel life model that incorporates both aging time and temperature was proposed for rapid prediction of low cycle fatigue life. It is assumed that this model promotes reliable fatigue life prediction in low alloy steels under various thermal aging circumstances, as well as the extrapolation of fatigue performance of the material in service.

Abstract:ABSTACT: Based on dynamic mechanical analysis, aging diagnosis of large generator winding insulation, subjected to combined stresses including electrical, thermal, mechanical vibration and thermal cycling factors under simulated conditions, is introduced and a novel method used to characterize the insulation aging condition of stator bar specimen with dynamic mechanical parameters is developed in this paper. The dynamic mechanical experiments were conducted in different multi-stress aging periods and the relationships between the insulation aging condition and mechanical characteristic parameters are discussed. It has been proved by experiments that the dynamic mechanical operators, such as dynamic modulus, temperature of glass transition, dynamic mechanical loss peak value, width of half a peak value and apparent activation energy of glass transition are the valuable indicators of the delamination and fracture behavior of stator winding insulation.

Abstract:International Journal of Applied Mechanics, Ahead of Print. Our previous study observed a non-monotonic time-dependent deformation from the long-term isothermal tensile creep tests, indicating the significant influence of physical aging on viscoelastic behavior. In this work, a new physical mechanism-based thermo-rheological complex constitutive relation that combines Ngai's coupling model and Schapery's nonlinear viscoelastic framework is established. A piecewise function was used to represent the non-monotonic time-varying compliance, in which molecular cooperativity and the interaction between different relaxing units were considered. The strength of the interaction is presented by a coupling strength parameter. The effects of stress and temperature on the deformation are represented by not only two shift factors but also are associated with the coupling strength parameter, which is modeled as a function of the fictive temperature. The physical aging effect is also incorporated into the evolution of the fictive temperature. The proposed model was verified by a comparison of the experimental and finite element simulated results. Finally, the physical meanings of the model parameters and their correlation with the macroscopic deformation of the laminates were discussed.

Abstract:为确保复合绝缘子外绝缘有良好的耐老化性能,根据外绝缘实际生产情况,结合外绝缘所用材料结构性能的差别及外绝缘塑炼硫化工艺特点,通过分析验证认为,采用进口D4生产出有甲基封头,分子量分布较窄的硅橡胶和微酸性能的白炭黑等原料,在密炼机内通过适当温度进行塑炼后,存放一段时间进行高温硫化成型的外绝缘,有着明显耐老化性能。
Micro Structural Characterization of Liquid Silicone Rubber’s Aging Phenomenon Used for External Insulation

Abstract:本文针对近年来出现在一些变电站SF6电压、电流互感器的液体硅橡胶绝缘护套出现龟裂老化这一现象,对发生老化的硅橡胶材料进行了性能测试和试验,并利用红外光谱分析、XPS分析、热失重等手段分析了其微观结构和物质组成的变化。研究发现老化后的液体硅橡胶中Si-C、Si-O官能团和Si、C、O元素的相对含量发生了变化,且随着老化程度的增加呈现出较为明显的规律,老化越严重,Si-C键含量越少,C元素的含量越少,O元素含量越多。本文认为,用官能团含量、元素相对含量可以准确地表征液体硅橡胶材料的老化程度。通过对不同老化程度的液体硅橡胶进行的憎水性、耐漏电起痕性能的试验也证实了本文的观点。

Abstract:复合绝缘子护套由有机硅橡胶材料组成,由于其直接暴露在电场、紫外、水分等多种外部环境压力下,因此将不可避免地发生老化。抽取了运行年限在3～22 a的绝缘子共计371支,对护套材料的老化特性进行了分析。首先,利用肉眼检测,内外色差,硬度法,静态接触角法、斜面法,以及拉伸法测量了硅橡胶材料的宏观老化性能,同时利用压汞法(mercury intrusion method,MIP),红外分析(Fouriertransforminfrared spectroscopy,FTIR),以及X射线光电子能谱分析(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,XPS)对老化样品的内部微观结构,官能团组分以及原子组分进行了详尽的分析。分析结果表明,绝缘子在经过多年运行后,其浅层材料的阻燃剂含量减少,材料内部物理耦合破坏严重,材料孔隙率上升,造成材料的耐漏电起痕性能下降以及吸水性能上升;同时在紫外等老化因素的作用下,材料的颜料将迅速分解而褪色;此外热氧老化过程是硅橡胶护套机械性能下降的主要原因。
