Abstract:Loop heat pipes (LHPs) are heat transfer devices with capillary pumping of the working fluid that have a relatively low thermal resistance. Its value depends on the operating temperature of the evaporator, which is the key element of this device. One of the main objectives of improving the heat transfer characteristics of the LHP is to reduce the evaporator temperature. The paper discusses the problem of reducing the temperature of a disk-shaped evaporator through a more efficient distribution of heat flows in it. For this purpose, a unique 2D steady-state model of the evaporator was developed. For the first time, calculated data on the influence of the thermal conductivity of structural materials at different heat transfer intensities in the evaporation zone on the evaporator temperature were obtained. The considered range of thermal conductivity variation from 3 to 380 W/mK covers the thermal conductivity of almost all materials, including porous ones, which are commonly used for LHPs. The results of the computer simulation were obtained by changing the heat transfer coefficients at the evaporating surface of the wick from 5 to 40 kW/m 2 K and the different wick thickness, which varied from 2.5 mm to 7 mm. Based on the calculated data, a comparative analysis of the temperatures of the evaporator thermal contact surface and the parasitic heat leaks into the compensation chamber (CC) was carried out, which showed that the thermal conductivity of the material can have a significant effect on the operating temperature of the LHP only at low intensity of heat exchange in the evaporator active zone. Since the main results of the work are consistent with the published experimental data of LHPs with disk-shaped evaporators, the conclusions can be considered reasonable recommendations for the development of more efficient evaporators for loop heat pipes.
