Abstract:Interlayer rotational alignment in van der Waals (vdW) structures of two-dimensional (2D) materials couples strongly to electronic properties and, therefore, has significant technological implications. Nevertheless, controlling the rotation of an arbitrary 2D material flake remains a challenge in the development of rotation-tunable electronics, for the emerging field of twistronics. In this article, we reveal a general moiré-driven mechanism that governs the interlayer rotation. Controlling the moiré can therefore hold promise for controlling the interlayer rotation. We further demonstrate mismatch strain engineering as a useful tool to design the interlayer rotation via changing the energy landscape of moiré within a finite-sized region. The robustness and programmable nature of our approach arise from moiré symmetry, energetics, and mechanics. Our approach provides another possibility to the on-demand design of rotation-tunable electronics.

Abstract:Structural chirality, defined as the lack of mirror symmetry in materials' atomic structure, is only meaningful in three-dimensional space. Yet two-dimensional (2D) materials, despite their small thickness, can show chirality that enables prominent asymmetric optical, electrical and magnetic properties. In this Perspective, we first discuss the possible definition and mathematical description of '2D chiral materials', and the intriguing physics enabled by structural chirality in van der Waals 2D homobilayers and heterostructures, such as circular dichroism, chiral plasmons and the nonlinear Hall effect. We then summarize the recent experimental progress and approaches to induce and control structural chirality in 2D materials from monolayers to superlattices. Finally, we postulate a few unique opportunities offered by 2D chiral materials, the synthesis and new properties of which can potentially lead to chiral optoelectronic devices and possibly materials for enantioselective photochemistry.

Abstract:The chirality of materials is of great significance in many fields. Metasurfaces with chirality have attracted great attention in the past decades because of their ability to miniaturize the device into the nanoscale. An important class of chiral metasurfaces is the Moire pattern assembled by two layers of metasurfaces. However, Moire metasurfaces usually have limited circular dichroism. Here, the origin and the limiting factor of the chirality of Moire metasurfaces using the chiral coupled oscillator model is analyzed. It is demonstrated that, with the help of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, the chirality can be improved by breaking the symmetry in the positive and negative k directions. The best result is achieved when both the two components have lowest transmission. In addition, the chiral anisotropy of a Moire metasurface in full momentum space is studied, and it is shown that the chirality can be further improved in certain directions. The chiral anisotropy of Moire metasurfaces may be used in applications such as optical information storage, structured color, unidirectional light coupling, sensitive chiral sensors, chiral nonlinear optics, chiral lasers, and Bose-Einstein condensation.

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with artificially engineered subwavelength structures can effectively couple incident waves and lead diverse electromagnetic responses to various circular polarizations. Here, we designed and fabricated an origami-inspired reconfigurable three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial, whose circular dichroism can be dynamically controlled by simple mechanical stretch of its bonded elastomer substrate. The chiral metamaterial was obtained from a patterned planar achiral metasurface through mechanically guided 3D assembly based on the prestrain approach, which ensures deterministic and uniform deformations for each building block during stretching. Numerical simulations and experimental observations were carried out to illustrate the deformation mechanism and the electromagnetic response of the metamaterials under the applied strain. It is shown that the transmissions and chiroptical activities can be continuously tuned from complete spin selectivity to partial spin selectivity when the applied strain increases. The maximum circular dichroism was experimentally measured as high as 0.98, which can be even adjusted to near zero by mechanical stretching. Our work demonstrated an easily operated and promising way to control the chirality of origami-inspired metamaterial in the microwave region, which can be further extended to the terahertz frequency biosensing, imaging, and spectroscope.

Abstract:We report deterministic control over moiré superlattice interference pattern in twisted bilayer graphene by implementing designable device-level heterostrain with process-induced strain engineering, a widely used technique in industrial silicon nanofabrication processes. By depositing stressed thin films onto our twisted bilayer graphene samples, heterostrain magnitude and strain directionality can be controlled by stressor film force (film stress x film thickness) and patterned stressor geometry, respectively. We examine strain and moiré interference with Raman spectroscopy through in-plane and moiré-activated phonon mode shifts. Results support systematic C$_{3}$ rotational symmetry breaking and tunable periodicity in moiré superlattices under the application of uniaxial or biaxial heterostrain. Experimental results are validated by molecular statics simulations and density functional theory based first principles calculations. This provides a method to not only tune moiré interference without additional twisting, but also allows for a systematic pathway to explore different van der Waals based moiré superlattice symmetries by deterministic design.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices of tunable wavelengths and the further developed moiré of moiré systems, by artificially assembling two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials as designed, have brought up a versatile toolbox to explore fascinating condensed mater physics and their stimulating physicochemical functionalities. In this Perspective, we briefly review the recent progress in the emerging field of moiré synergy, highlighting the synergetic effects arising in distinct dual moiré heterostructures of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). A spectrum of moiré of moiré configurations, the advanced characterization and the exploitation efforts on the moiré-moiré interactions will be discussed. Finally, we look out for urgent challenges to be conquered in the community and some potential research directions in the near future.

Moiré Kramers-Weyl Fermions from Structural Chirality with Ideal Radial Spin Texture

Abstract:We demonstrate that two-dimensional Kramers-Weyl fermions can be engineered in spin-orbit coupled twisted bilayers, where the chiral structure of these moiré systems breaks all mirror symmetries, confining Kramers-Weyl fermions to high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone under time reversal symmetry. Our theoretical analysis reveals a symmetry-enforced Weyl-like interlayer moiré coupling that universally ensures an ideal radial spin-texture at arbitrary twist angles, under $C_{nz}$ symmetry with n>2. First principles density functional calculation confirm the realization of these fermions in twisted $\alpha$-In$_2$Se$_3$ bilayers, where flat bands and out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization in each layer guarantee two-dimensional Kramers-Weyl physics with perfectly ideal radial spin textures.

Abstract:Large-scale two-dimensional (2D) moiré superlattices are driving a revolution in designer quantum materials. The electronic interactions in these superlattices, strongly dependent on the periodicity and symmetry of the moiré pattern, critically determine the emergent properties and phase diagrams. To date, the relative twist angle between two layers has been the primary tuning parameter for a given choice of constituent crystals. Here, we establish strain as a powerful mechanism to in situ modify the moiré periodicity and symmetry. We develop an analytically exact mathematical description for the moiré lattice under arbitrary in-plane heterostrain acting on any bilayer structure. We demonstrate the ability to fine-tune the moiré lattice near critical points, such as the magic angle in bilayer graphene, or fully reconfigure the moiré lattice symmetry beyond that imposed by the unstrained constituent crystals. Due to this unprecedented simultaneous control over the strength of electronic interactions and lattice symmetry, 2D heterostrain provides a powerful platform to engineer, tune, and probe strongly correlated moiré materials.

Abstract:We present a framework that explains the strong connection in 2D materials between mechanics and electronic structure, via dislocation theory. Within this framework, Moiré patterns created by layered 2D materials may be understood as dislocation arrays, and vice versa. The dislocations are of a unique type that we describe as van der Waals dislocations, for which we present a complete geometrical description, connected to both stretch and twist Moiré patterns. A simple computational scheme, which reduces the complexity of the electronic interaction between layers in order to make the problem computationally tractable, is introduced to simulate these dislocation arrays, allowing us to predict and explain all of the observed Moiré patterns in 2D material systems within a unique framework. We extend this analysis as well to defects in Moiré patterns, which have been reported recently, and which are the result of defects of the same symmetry in the constituent 2D material layers. Finally, we show that linear defects in the Moiré space can be viewed as unidimensional topological states, and can be engineered using our framework.

Abstract:Chirality is an intriguing property of certain molecules, materials or artificial nanostructures, which allows them to interact with the spin angular momentum of the impinging light field. Due to their chiral geometry, they can distinguish between left- and right-hand circular polarization states or convert them into each other. Here, we introduce a novel approach towards optical chirality, which is observed in individual two-dimensional and geometrically mirror-symmetric nanostructures. In this scheme, the chiral optical response is induced by the chosen heterogeneous material composition of a particle assembly and the corresponding resonance behavior of the constituents it is built from, which breaks the symmetry of the system. As a proof of principle, we investigate such a structure composed of individual silicon and gold nanoparticles both experimentally as well as numerically. Our proposed concept constitutes a novel approach for designing two-dimensional chiral media tailored at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Understanding the atomic-scale mechanisms that govern the structure of interfaces is critical across materials systems but particularly so for two-dimensional (2D) moiré materials. Here, we image, atom-by-atom, the thermally induced structural evolution of twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides using in situ transmission electron microscopy. We observe low-temperature, local conversion of moiré superlattice into nanoscale aligned domains. Unexpectedly, this process occurs by nucleating a new grain within one monolayer, whose crystal orientation is templated by the other. The aligned domains grow through collective rotation of moiré supercells and hopping of 5|7 defect pairs at moiré boundaries. This provides mechanistic insight into the atomic-scale interactions controlling moiré structures and illustrates the potential to pattern interfacial structure and properties of 2D materials at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials offer a materials platform with potential applications from energy to information processing devices. Although some single- and few-layer forms of materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have been realized and thoroughly studied, the space of arbitrary layered assemblies is still mostly unexplored. The main goal of this work is to demonstrate precise control of layered materials' electronic properties through careful choice of the constituent layers, their stacking, and relative orientation. Physics-based and AI-driven approaches for the automated planning, execution, and analysis of electronic structure calculations are applied to layered assemblies based on prototype one-dimensional (1D) materials and realistic 2D materials. We find it is possible to routinely generate moiré band structures in 1D with desired electronic characteristics such as a bandgap of any value within a large range, even with few layers and materials (here, four and six, respectively). We argue that this tunability extends to 2D materials by showing the essential physical ingredients are already evident in calculations of two-layer MoS2 and multi-layer graphene moiré assemblies.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed the occurrence of novel 2D moiré patterns in nanoflatland materials. These visually beautiful moiré superlattices have become a playground on which exotic quantum phenomena can be observed. The state‐of‐the‐art experimental techniques that have been developed for crafting moiré superlattices of flatland materials are reviewed. Graphene and its heterostructure with boron nitride have now sparked new interlayer twists as a new degree of freedom for tuning several angle‐dependent physical properties, e.g., the appearance of van Hove singularities, tunable Mott insulator states, and the Hofstadter butterfly pattern. Moreover, the interplay of correlated insulating states and superconductivity is recently observed for a so‐called magic‐angle twisted bilayer graphene. Furthermore, beyond graphene, other 2D materials, such as silicene, phosphorene, and the recent black phosphorus /MoS2 heterojunctions, which are 2D allotropes of bismuth and antimony grown on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite and MoS2, are considered. Finally, the optically important exciton phenomenon, which depends on the moiré potential and has been observed for a moiré superlattice of transition metal dichalcogenides, is discussed. This overview aims to cover all the fascinating prospects that depend on the moiré superlattice, ranging from electronic structure to optical exotics among flatland materials.

Designing Moiré Patterns by Strain

Abstract:Experiments conducted on two-dimensional twisted materials have revealed a plethora of moiré patterns with different forms and shapes. The formation of these patterns is usually attributed to the presence of small strains in the samples, which typically arise during their fabrication. In this work we find that the superlattice structure of such systems actually depends crucially on the interplay between twist and strain. For systems composed of honeycomb lattices, we show that this can lead to the formation of practically any moiré geometry, even if each lattice is only slightly distorted. As a result, we show that under strain the moiré Brillouin zone is not a stretched irregular hexagon, but rather a primitive cell that changes according to the geometry of the strained moiré vectors. We identify the conditions for the formation of hexagonal moiré patterns arising solely due to shear or biaxial strain, thus opening the possibility of engineering moiré patterns solely by strain. Moreover, we study the electronic properties in such moiré patterns and find that the strain tends to suppress the formation of the flat moiré bands, even in the strain-induced hexagonal patterns analogous to those obtained by the twist only. Our work explains the plethora of moiré patterns observed in experiments, and provides a solid theoretical foundation from which one can design moiré patterns by strain.
