Abstract:We show that the selected area diffraction patterns presented in a recent paper (T. Liu et al. Sci. Rep. 2015 5, 15331) do not prove the existence of a new hexagonal phase in martensitic steels. They can be actually simulated by twin effects.

Abstract:We discuss a relatively simple and computationally inexpensive model that has recently been developed to study phase transformations and shape memory effects in finite nanostructures. Our major focus is given to nanowires of finite length and other nanostructures where size effects are pronounced. The main tool used here is based on mesoscopic models developed with the phase-field approach which we and other authors have applied before to study ferroelectrics at the nanoscale. We study the cubic-to-tetragonal transformations in which case the 2D analogue of the model describes the square-to-rectangle phase transformations. The actual model is based on a coupled system of partial differential equations and is solved with a combination of the Chebyshev collocation method and the extended proper orthogonal decomposition. The developed model and its numerical implementation allow us to study properties of nanostructures and several representative examples of mechanical behavior of nanostructures are discussed.
Double Diffraction or ω-Fe Diffraction in Body-Centered Cubic {112}<111>-Type Twinned Martensite

Abstract:The martensitic substructure in steels plays a major role in understanding the nature of martensite transformation and improving mechanical properties. However, the substructure in the quenched martensite of carbon steel, particularly in high carbon martensite, has not been clarified yet. Local crystal structure in martensite has been characterized by means of transmission electron microscope (TEM). A specimen tilting experiment in TEM is a practical method to simply confirm that the electron diffraction spots are caused by either double diffraction effect or a second crystalline phase. By tilting the TEM specimen containing Fe–C twinned martensite structure, the so-called double diffraction spots of {112}<111>-type twin are still visible even after the diffraction spots from the twinned crystals become invisible. This experimental result is the direct evidence that the so-called twinning double diffraction spots come from a second crystalline phase (ω-phase), which is distributed in the body-centered cubic (BCC){112}<111>-type twinning boundary region. An ideal BCC {112}<111>-type twin is just a model, which has not been reported yet in any experiment.

Abstract:We address the three main points of Guo et al . They claim that we should have used the engineering stress versus engineering strain curves to infer the mechanical properties of our nanotwinned titanium, question our sample design on the basis of a finite-element analysis, and doubt the immobility of some preexisting grain/twin boundaries in our electron backscatter diffraction micrographs. We find their analysis to be groundless and to contain many inconsistencies.

Abstract:In order to explain the experimental facts that start temperatures of reverse martensite transformation (As) for nanostructured Fe–Ni and Co are lower than those for their coarse-grained counterparts, a thermodynamic model was established in this paper. The thermodynamic analysis shows that the decrease of As for nanostructured Fe–Ni and Co can be attributed to the difference of surface free energy for martensite and austenite. The correlation between the decrease of As and start temperature of martensitic transformation (Ms) in nanostructured material is further proposed.

Abstract:The generation of irreversible macroscopic strains in superelastic NiTi alloys is an important issue closely related to the crystallography of the transformation from B2 austenite to B19' martensite under stress. Although widely investigated at micro and nano scales by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the observation of this phase transformation at the mesoscale is still lacking. In the present study, a superelastic NiTi wire was maintained in bending condition and investigated by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique. A strong variant selection and a formation of martensite texture were observed and quantified using the interaction work (IW) based on the distortion matrix of a single variant. A new habit plane between martensite and parent B2, {114} B2 || ( 201 ̄ ) M , was experimentally measured. It was explained by the Phenomenological Theory of Martensite Crystallography (PTMC) using dislocation slip {110} B2 as lattice invariant shear (LIS). Some new B2 domains were also found in {114} B2 twinning relation with primary B2 grain. Two scenarios are proposed to explain them: a) the direct formation of {114} B2 deformation twin in B2, and b) a more complex one in which a primary B2 grain is transformed into a martensite variant, a ( 201 ̄ ) M deformation twin is formed inside this variant; then the ( 201 ̄ ) M twinned martensite reversely transforms into a new {114} B2 twinned B2 domain. The scenario b) permits to explain some uncommon (130) M , (201) M , and ( 101 ̄ ) M twins observed by EBSD between the martensite variants of the two {114} B2 twin-related B2 phases.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the effect of grain size on the tensile process of nano-duplex stainless steel with bimodal structure distribution. Through the stress-strain curve, the percentage change curve of different atomic types and the atomic configuration diagram from different perspectives, it is found that the deformation mechanism of nano duplex stainless steel with bimodal structure distribution is different from that of ordinary bimodal structure materials. Small grains take the lead in enhancing model plasticity through the generation and activity of dislocations, while large grains enhance plasticity by promoting the phase transition of the model and suppressing the generation and activity of dislocations within small grains.

Abstract:Explaining the crystallography of iron alloys martensite with a {225}γ habit plane remains a challenging task within the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography. The purpose of this study is to re-examine the martensite formed in a Fe-8Cr-1.1C alloy using EBSD, which has a better angular resolution than the conventional transmission electron diffraction techniques previously used. The results show that the single morphological plates, which hold a near {225}γ habit plane, are bivariant composites made up of two twin-related variants. It is shown that a {113}γ plane is systematically parallel to one of the three common planes between the two twin-related crystals. This observation suggests that the lattice invariant strain of transformation occurs through a dislocation glide on the {113}γ ⟨110⟩γ system, rather than through twinning as is commonly accepted. Based on this assumption, the predictions of Bowles and Mackenzie's original theory are in good agreement with the crystallographic features of {225}γ martensite. Unexpectedly, it is the high shear solution of the theory that gives the most accurate experimental predictions.

Abstract:<p>Continuous innovations in design of advanced structural steels are essential for future progress in manufacturing, automotive and construction industries. Events taking place at nano and atomic scales play crucial role in controlling the strength of steels. Recently, strengths of 1 – 1.5 GPa were realised in nano-scale precipitation strengthened steels. With availability of modern characterisation techniques, such as high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, it is now possible to gain insight into the mechanisms of solute atoms clustering and formation of nano-precipitates, as well as their interactions with dislocations and resulting contribution to strength. In this review, the focus is on cluster formation and nano-precipitation in low temperature body centred cubic phases (ferrite, bainitic ferrite and martensite) in a range of steels from high strength low alloyed to maraging ones. Experimental and modelling data on nucleation and growth of these features is presented. The possible strengthening mechanisms are reviewed. Finally, future research areas and challenges for these classes of steels are critically discussed.</p>

Crystallographic Analysis of Lath Martensite in a 13Cr-5Ni Steel by Electron Backscattering Diffraction

Abstract:Morphology observation and crystallographic analysis of lath martensite in 13Cr-5Ni steel were investigated by electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) in a scanning electron microscope. The pole figures of the microstructure measured by EBSD showed that the martensite in this steel held the Kurdjumov–Sachs (K–S) orientation relationship, and the boundary misorientations after the austenite–martensite transformation were also analyzed. However, not all the 24 possible variants in the K–S relationship were observed in a single prior austenite grain. Sub-blocks with special combinations were observed, which can be explained by the minimization of the total shape strain between the adjacent variants introduced during the martensite transformation and relatively low carbon content in the 13Cr-5Ni steel.

Abstract:Numerous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to investigate the effect of the nanopores on the martensitic transformation (MT) of pure iron (Fe) during the heating-cooling cycle. As per the simulation results, nanopores can obviously affect the difficulty on MT during the cooling process in two ways: On the one hand, the volume ratio of nanopores to simulation box model (R p/b ) can influence the distribution configuration of stacking fault (SF) to change the type of austenite microstructure during the heating process owing to the obstruction of the nanopores on the dislocation slip. The effect of nanopores is not obvious when R p/b is less than 2.22 %. The main type of austenitic changes from defect-free/simple-SF types to the intersecting-SF type and, finally, to the dislocation-cell type with an increase in R p/b from 2.22 % to 17.9 %. The dislocations in intersecting-SF type and dislocation-cell type austenitic microstructures can provide the nucleation site of MT, thus increasing the MT temperature. On the other hand, the high surface energy of the nanopores caused by the incomplete atomic lattice can provide the necessary energy for the nucleation of martensite, which then promotes the occurrence of MT during the cooling process. When the nanopores intersect with the dislocation wall in dislocation-cell type austenitic microstructure, martensite nucleates at the nanopores surface and then grows along the dislocation wall. In the previous investigation of selective laser melting martensitic steel, the nanopore in the microstructure was generally believed harmful to the mechanical property of specimen; however, in this study, it has been observed to promote the MT during solution-quenching heat treatment, which improves the mechanical property by improving the content of martensitic phase. This provides a new perspective in determining the significance of nanopores in microstructures.

Abstract:The electron structure of iron-based substitutional solid solutions and CrNi austenitic steels alloyed by Mn, Mo, Cu, Si, Al and C, N was studied by means of the mea- surement of conduction electron spin resonance. The electron exchange in binary fcc Fe N and Fe C alloys was also calculated using an ab initio norm-conserving pseudopotential method. Mossbauer spectroscopy was used to study the distribution of carbon and nitrogen in binary fcc Fe C and Fe N alloys. It is shown that Ni, Cu, Si and Al increase the concentration of free electrons, whereas Cr, Mn and Mo decrease it. Nitro- gen in fcc iron and iron-based solid solutions increases the state density at the Fermi surface, whereas carbon contributes its electrons to the states below the Fermi surface. The results of studies concerning the atomic distribution are consistent with the available data on the short range order in iron-based alloys (1). Also, it was shown via the theoretical computation and ex- periments that the distribution of C and Mn atoms in Hadfield manganese steel is local-order (2). The state of atomic order influences properties like austenite stabil- ity and strength of austenite as well as the shear process during martensite transformation (1, 3). In the present investigation, the distribution of C and metallic alloying elements as well as the phase composition change be- fore and after cold deformation in an Fe-Mn-Mo-C al- loy were studied by the use of Mossbauer spectroscopy. Abstract:The phase transformation from austenite to acicular ferrite in the simulated coarse grained heat affected zone of a high strength low alloy steel was investigated by means of analytical characterisation techniques such as in situ microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction analysis. The acicular ferrite grains nucleated on inclusions (Zr–Ti oxides) in coarse austenite grain grew in different directions and effectively partitioned coarse austenite grain into several finer and separate regions. The crystallographic grain size became small for coarse austenite grains due to the effective partitioning by acicular ferrite laths or plates.

Development of novel ferritic steels strengthened by the Co16X6Si7-G phase: A theoretical and experimental study

Abstract:This work aims to develop a novel Co16X6Si7-G (X = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Tc, Re) phase strengthened ferritic steel with the help of first-principles calculations. Ddensity function theory calculation results demonstrated that the Co16X6Si7-G phase possesses the advantage of good thermodynamic stability and low misfit with the ferritic matrix. On the basis of calculation, we successfully prepared three model alloys, i.e., the Fe20Cr5Co2Si1Ti, Fe20Cr5Co2Si0.75Nb and Fe20Cr5Co2Si1.5Ta (wt.%), who make a good trade-off between strength, ductility and good oxidation/corrosion resistance. Our observation verified that the Co16X6Si7-G phase can precipitate within 1 h with proper heat treatment, showing a cube-on-cube orientation relationship with its parent matrix. The introduction of G phase precipitates amazingly increases the micro-hardness of model alloys by ∼ 160 HV after aging at 873 K. And the precipitates within the ferrite phase have not been observed to grow coarser even after 96 hrs aging treatment. Furthermore, excellent mechanical properties of ∼ 1.2 GPa tensile strength and ∼ 10 % total elongation have been achieved after 6 hrs aging time at 873 K. These findings indicate the Co16X6Si7-G phase would be a promising candidate as a strengthening medium and provide valuable insight into the screen of precipitates for the development of high-strength and ductile steels.

Anomalous Surface Segregation Profiles in Ferritic FeCr Stainless Steel

Abstract:The iron-chromium alloy and its derivatives are widely used for their remarkable resistance to corrosion, which only occurs in a narrow concentration range around 9 to 13 atomic percent chromium. Although known to be due to chromium enrichment of a few atoms thick layer at the surfaces, the understanding of its complex atomistic origin has been a remaining challenge. We report an investigation of the thermodynamics of such surfaces at the atomic scale by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We use a Hamiltonian which provides a parameterization of previous ab initio results and successfully describes the alloy's unusual thermodynamics. We report a strong enrichment in Cr of the surfaces for low bulk concentrations, with a narrow optimum around 12 atomic percent chromium, beyond which the surface composition decreases drastically. This behavior is explained by a synergy between (i) the complex phase separation in the bulk alloy, (ii) local phase transitions that tune the layers closest to the surface to an iron-rich state and inhibit the bulk phase separation in this region, and (iii) its compensation by a strong and non-linear enrichment in Cr of the next few layers. Implications with respect to the design of prospective nanomaterials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:This work comments on a recent publication by Hajra et al. (Mater. Design 236 (2023) 112483), which claims to have presented compelling experimental and theoretical evidence in favour of the existence of an equilibrium C14-NbCr 2 high-temperature Laves phase in the Cr-Nb system. In the present comment, evidence and conclusions reported in the paper of Hajra et al. are critically put into context of insight from previous works. From this it is concluded here, that the evidence in favour of an equilibrium C14-NbCr 2 high-temperature Laves phase is, by far, not that compelling as claimed by Hajra et al.. Instead, the most direct evidence presented in the literature does not support the existence of an equilibrium C14-NbCr 2 high-temperature Laves phase. Alternative interpretations of Hajra et al.'s evidence and conclusions are offered, and it is elaborated, which true gaps in knowledge exist concerning the Laves phases in the Cr-Nb system.

Abstract:A phase-field model has been developed to describe microstructure evolution during cyclic phase transformations for two low-carbon steels (Fe-0.1 wt%C, Fe-0.1 wt%C-0.5 wt%Mn). The austenite-ferrite transformations are assumed to occur under negligible-partition conditions for Mn and only long-range diffusion of carbon is considered. A Gibbs-energy dissipation model has been integrated with the phase-field model to describe the stagnant stages during cyclic phase transformations in the ternary alloy. Size effect on the structural and magnetic phase transformations of iron nanoparticles

Abstract:Iron nanoparticles are among the most promising low-dimensional materials in terms of applications. This particularity is attributable to the magnetic properties of these nanoparticles, which exhibit different allotropes as a function of temperature. In this work, we sought to characterise at the atomic scale how their structural and magnetic transformations can be affected by the size. To achieve this objective, we developed a tight-binding model incorporating a magnetic contribution via a Stoner term implemented in a Monte Carlo code to relax the structure and the magnetic state. Using our approach, we show that magnetism is strongly reinforced by the surface, which leads to increase the Curie temperature as the size of the particle decreases contrary to the solid-solid transition temperature. Our work thus provides a deep understanding at the atomic scale of the key factors that determines the structural and magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticles, shedding more light on their unique character which is crucial for further applications.

One-step theory of fcc-bcc martensitic transformation

Abstract:Martensitic transformation in steels is responsible for their very high strength and has thus been studied for more than one century since the first works of Martens. However, there is not yet simple physical theory. A rigorous classification of the crystallographic subgroupoids (packets) of the KS variants and the continuity between the KS, NW and Pitsch variants are introduced to represent the crystallographic intricacy associated to the martensite transformation. From this analysis, a new simple theory based on Pitsch distortion is proposed. The distortion respects the hard sphere packing of the iron atoms and implies the existence of a neutral line along the close packed directions. Its principal strains are 0, -5.8 and +15.5 %, well below the +12, +12 and -20 % values of the Bain distortion. Martensite variants nucleate by Pitsch distortion in an austenitic matrix continuously deformed by the transformation. The martensite variants grow by the same Pitsch distortion; they are locally in Pitsch orientation, and therefore are gradually oriented inside the deformation field of austenite leading to the continuum of orientations including KS and NW. Many observations reported in literature can now be re-interpreted.
