Abstract:Encaged-OH--free Ca12(1-x)Sr12xAl14O33:0.1%Gd3+ conductive phosphors were prepared through a melt-solidification process in combination with a subsequent heat treatment. Absorption spectra showed that the maximum encaged-electron concentration was increased to 1.08 × 1021 cm-3 through optimizing the doping amount of Sr2+ (x = 0.005). Meanwhile, FTIR and Raman spectra indicated that pure Ca11.94Sr0.06Al14O33:0.1%Gd3+ conductive phosphor without encaged OH- and C22- anions was acquired. For the conductive powders heat-treated in air for different times, the encaged-electron concentrations were tuned from 1.02 × 1021 to 8.3 × 1020 cm-3. ESR, photoluminescence, and luminescence kinetics analyses indicated that the emission at 312 nm mainly originated from Gd3+ ions surrounded by encaged O2- anions, while Gd3+ ions surrounded by encaged electrons had a negative contribution to the UV emission due to the existence of an energy transfer process. Under low-voltage electron-beam excitation (3 kV), enhanced cathodoluminescence (CL) of the conductive phosphors could be achieved by tuning the encaged-electron concentrations. In particular, for the encaged-OH--free conductive phosphor, the emission intensity of the CL was about one order of magnitude higher than that of the conductive phosphor containing encaged OH- anions. Our results suggested that the encaged-OH--free conductive phosphors have potential application in low-voltage FEDs.

Abstract:Y2.78-xSrxGd0.1Al5O12∶0.06Ce3+ phosphors were synthesized by co-precipitation method.The crystalline structure and Spectra properties of Y2.78-xSrxGd0.1Al5O12∶0.06Ce3+ phosphors were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and fluorescence spectrophotometer.The color temperatures of the white LEDs fabricated with blue chip and as-prepared phosphors were studied by HSP-6000 optical spectrum analyzer.It is found that the mole fraction of Sr2+ has obvious influences on the emission wavelength and intensity of as-prepared phosphors.The emission wavelengths of as-prepared phosphors display red-shift at first and then blue-shift appear with the molar of Sr2+ increasing.The emission intensity hardly decreases with Sr2+ mole fraction when it is below 0.05.And then the intensity decreases slowly with the mole fraction of Sr2+ increasing from 0.05 to 0.1,but decreases sharply when the mole fraction of Sr2+ is above 0.1.With the increase of mole fraction of Sr2+,the color temperatures of white light decrease at first,and then increase owing to the interaction of emission wavelength and intensity.When the mole fraction of Sr2+ exceeds 0.2,the impure phase-A appears which has negative effects on the luminescence property of as-prepared phosphors.

Abstract:Long afterglow phosphors of Sr1.956MgSi2O7: 0.004Eu2+, 0.04Dy3+ and Sr1.94MgSi2O7: 0.004Eu2+, 0.04Dy3+, 0.016Er3+ were successfully synthesized via the sol–gel method. The phase compositions and luminescent properties of the phosphors were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fluorescence spectra and decay curves. Compared with the undoped phosphor, the crystallinity of Er3+ co-doping phosphors is decreased. Luminescence spectra show the main peak of excitation was 274, 356 nm and the main emission peak was 467 nm. Furthermore, Sr1.94MgSi2O7: 0.004Eu2+, 0.04Dy3+, 0.016Er3+ show excellent luminescent properties, and its initial luminous intensity increased by 1.4 times than Sr1.956MgSi2O7: 0.004Eu2+, 0.04Dy3+. The mechanism of Sr1.94MgSi2O7: 0.004Eu2+, 0.04Dy3+, 0.016Er3+ enhancement has been discussed.

Abstract:Solid solution phosphors Gd3Ga2(Al3-ySiy)(O12-yNy):Ce3+ were synthesized by introducing [Si4+ + N3-]/[Al3+ + O2-] co-substitution into the lattice of Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+center dot Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+, characteristic as outstanding light yield (about 50-60 kPh/MeV), and has been applied in computer tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) nuclear medical detector, et al. With the increase of y value, the coordination environment around Gd3+(Ce3+) shrinked, which were confirmed by combining techniques of structure refinement, energy-dispersive spectrum, elements distribution mapping. As a result, stronger 5d orbital nephelauxetic effect (epsilon(c)) and bigger 5d energy level splitting (epsilon(cfs)) were induced. Thus resulting in longer wavelength of excitation and emission from Ce3+, and broadening of emission spectra. The typical sample Gd2.95Ga2Al2.5Si0.5O11.5N0.5:0.05Ce(3+) (GGASON(0.5):Ce3+) exhibits sufficient red component and persistent luminescence(> 10 ms), enables fabrication of warm white light suited for alternating-current (AC) when combined with blue light chip (460 nm).

Abstract:Sr1.995–1.5xGdxSiO4:0.005Eu2+ phosphor series with x=0–0.08 mol for near-ultraviolet white light-emitting diodes (NUV w-LEDs) were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. XRD profile pattern and refinement results demonstrated that doping Gd3+ ions resulted in the phase transformation (β-Sr2SiO4→α'-Sr2SiO4). The photoluminescence spectrum of the sample with x=0 mol displayed two emission peaks centered at 470 and 525 nm. The two-peak spectra became one-peak spectra with the Gd3+ concentration increasing. Actually, the fitting results demonstrated that the one-peak spectra were still composed of two single emission spectra. The photoluminescence intensity was improved and the CIE chromaticity coordinates were adjusted via doping Gd3+.

Abstract:RV0.5P0.5O4:Dy3+, Ca1.96Pb0.04R8(SiO4) 6O2: Dy3+ [R = Gd, Y] and SrGdAlO4:Dy3+ were prepared and energy transfer from Gd3+ to Dy3+ is reported. The luminescence of Dy3+ can be enhanced by sensitisation with the vanadate-phosphate matrix and Pb2+, Gd3+ ions. Gd3+ is better than Y3+ which is optically inert as a matrix.

Abstract:The promising green oxynitride phosphor, Ba3-xMgxSi6O12N2:Eu(2+) was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The effect of Mg(2+) doping on the structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of Ba3Si6O12N2:Eu(2+) was investigated systematically. The results reveal that the phosphor retains the single phase of Ba3Si6O12N2, with the lattice expanding upon increasing the Mg(2+) concentration, in an appropriate range. This suggests that a large portion of Mg(2+) enters into the interstitial sites of the crystal lattice. At a certain concentration, Mg(2+) doping can greatly enhance the absorption and PL intensity and decrease the full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of Ba3Si6O12N2:Eu(2+) phosphors. The green phosphor Ba2.87Eu0.1Mg0.03Si6O12N2 exhibited a small thermal quenching, which remained 82% of the initial emission intensity when measured at 150 °C. The quantum efficiency measured at 400 nm excitation was 38.5%. All the results indicate that the solid solution Ba3-xMgxSi6O12N2:Eu(2+) can be a good candidate for phosphors applicable in n-UV LEDs for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:A propylene oxide (PO)-driven fast sol-gel route followed with a post high temperature calcination were utilized to synthesize CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cationic solid solution phosphors with micro-spherical morphologies and improved internal quantum efficiencies. The polyethylene oxide (PEO) was also employed to induce the phase separation of CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ precursors to get monodispersed spherical morphologies in the sol-gel system. Benefit from uniform copolymerization of each chemical components and pyrolysis of organic matter, Ca, Sr, Al and O were homogenously distributed in the produced CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cage like microspheres. It helps to efficiently trap incident light and to improve the PL efficiencies. By changing the ratio of Ca/Sr, infinite solid solution polycrystalline phosphors, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ microspheres with x = 0~1, can be obtained and their PL emission can be gradually tuned from green to white to blue. Micro-spherical SrAl2O4: Eu2+, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ and CaAl2O4: Eu2+ phosphors exhibited internal quantum efficiencies as high as 71.1, 35.3~45.9 and 75.3%, respectively.

Abstract:Rare earth activated color converted phosphors have been widely used in solid-state lighting and display fields. Developing phosphors with high luminous efficiency is of great significance for light -emitting devices. Concentration quenching is the main factor limiting the improvement of phosphor luminescence efficiency during increasing the activator doping level. In this study, a novel structural optimization strategy is developed to overcome the impact of concentration quenching. In Tb 3 + activated NaYSiO 4 (NYSO), large -size Gd 3 + ions are introduced to adjust the distance of rare earth ions and suppress the energy transfer between Tb 3 + luminescent centers. It is shown that at a critical Tb 3 + concentration, for which concentration quenching tends to occur in NaYSiO 4 :Tb 3 + , Gd 3 + incorporation successfully raises the internal quantum efficiency from 64.8 % for Tb 3 + - singly-doped NYSO up to 80.6 % for Gd 3 + /Tb 3 + co -doped one. The findings can offer a feasible pathway in promoting the luminescent properties of silicate phosphor hosts.

Achieving high quantum efficiency independent on luminescence center through sub-lattice cage engineering

Abstract:Duly promoting the relating structure engineering at the level of sub-lattice can accelerate the discovery and improvement of new phosphor materials. In this paper, we describe a new concept of "sub-lattice cage engineering" as a potential design principle for designing novel Sr8MgCe(PO4)7, (Sr8-xTbx)MgCe(PO4)7 and Sr8(Mg1-yMny)Ce(PO4)7 phosphors with double cage structure. In these phosphors, the inner cage consists of three configurations: Sr/MgO8, Sr/MgO9 and PO4 polyhedrons and the outer cage is constituted by two configurations: Sr/MgO8 and Sr/MgO9 polyhedrons. Relying on this design, no matter single-emitter doping or multi-emitters doping, and no matter electron transition of homogeneous ions or energy transfer between heterogeneous ions, they all achieve a high quantum efficiency and energy transfer efficiency independent on luminescence center. As a result, the representative lanthanide ions of Ce3+ and Tb3+ as well as typical transition element of Mn2+ in these phosphors all exhibit high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) over 97.6%, 87% and 71.5% and energy transfer efficiency (ETE) of Ce3+-Tb3+ and Ce3+-Mn2+ up to 92% and 83%, respectively. All the IQE and ETE are higher than the known prominent ones for Ce3+, Mn2+ and Tb3+ doped phosphors. As the proof-of-concept, a white LED using these phosphors as the core components is fabricated, and it can be operated at high power density (>100 mA), thus further verifying their potential for some prospective applications, such as high-power lighting and laser display.

Abstract:Through tailoring the local structure of the Ce3+ in K3‐yRbyGdSi2O7:Ce3+, a novel cyan phosphor with enhancing emission and thermal stability is yielded. The improvements in emission and thermal stability are both correlated to the elongated Ce3+─O2− bonds. Finally, the cyan phosphor is applied to bridge the cyan gap, and the color rendering index is improved from 90.8 to 93.4. Crystal‐field engineering can obtain targeted emission more effectively, compared with the laborious experimental screening of new hosts. However, there still lack of paradigms for obtaining Ce3+‐doped cyan phosphors by crystal‐field engineering, and the correlation between the emission and the local structure of the Ce3+ ions has rarely been disclosed. Herein, through substituting the K+ in K3‐yRbyGdSi2O7:Ce3+ with Rb+, the emission color changes from yellow‐green to cyan and finally to blue. In addition, the emission intensity and thermal stability greatly improve, as the internal quantum efficiency increases from 39.4% (y = 0) to 83.6% (y = 1.2), and the thermal activation energy increases from 0.25 eV (y = 0) to 0.36 eV (y = 1.2). The optimized luminescent properties have been interpretated from the change in energy level splitting and configuration coordinate of Ce3+, both of which originate from the elongated Ce3+─O2− bonds. Finally, the cyan‐emitting phosphor K1.8R1.2GSO:Ce3+ is applied to bridge the cyan gap in a fabricated white light‐emitting diodes, and the color rendering index is improved from 90.8 to 93.4. This work not only provides an efficient cyan phosphor, but also highlights an avenue for the rational design of phosphors with optimal luminescent properties.

Enhanced Dy3+ white emission via energy transfer in spherical (Lu,Gd)3Al5O12 garnet phosphors

Abstract:The Dy3+ doped (Lu,Gd)3Al5O12 garnet phosphors with spherical morphology were obtained via homogeneous precipitation method, followed by calcination at 1100 °C. The particle morphology does not change significantly, but can be controlled by adjusting the urea content. The synthesis, structure, luminescent properties of precursor and resultant particles were analyzed by the combined technologies of XRD, FE-SEM, PLE/PL decay behavior. The (Lu0.975Dy0.025)AG phosphors display strong blue and yellow emission at ~481 nm (4F9/2 → 6H15/2 transition of Dy3+) and ~582 nm 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition of Dy3+), respectively. The phosphors have similar color coordinate and temperature of (~0.33, ~0.34), ~5517 K, respectively, which are closed to the white emission. The particle size and luminescent intensity decreased while the lifetime increased with the urea concentration increasing. The Gd3+ addition does not alter the shape/position of emission peaks, but enhance the blue and yellow emission of Dy3+ owing to the efficient Gd3+ → Dy3+ energy transfer. The [(Lu1-xGdx)0.975Dy0.025]3Al5O12 phosphors are expected to be widely used in the lighting and display areas.

Abstract:Sr2+ doped BaAl2Si2O8:Eu2+ phosphor was synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. With the increase of Sr2+ concentration, the phase structure of (Ba0.965−xSrxEu0.035)Al2Si2O8 changes from hexagonal phase to monoclinic phase owing to large activation energy in SrAl2Si2O8 system. (Ba0.965−xSrxEu0.035)Al2Si2O8 phosphor exhibits a broad blue band peaking at 425nm due to the 4f65d–4f7(8S7/2) transition of Eu2+ ions. The emission intensity increases, accompanied by the blue shift of emission maximum from 459 to 417nm with the Sr2+ doping concentration increasing. The optimal concentration of Sr2+ ion is 40%, and the phosphor shows high color stability in CIE chromaticity diagram. The result indicates that Sr2+ doped phosphor not only can enhance the relative intensity but also can adjust the chromaticity coordinate.

Abstract:Sr3-2xCexNaxGaO4F phosphors were prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated, Under ultraviolet light and low-voltage electron beam excitation, the phosphors show a typical broad emission of Ce3+ and the luminescence color can be tuned in a large gamut from greenish-blue to yellowish-green by changing Ce3+ concentration in the range of 0.01-0.30 (x value). Their luminescence behaviors are discussed in terms of Ce3+ in two distinct sites. The lowest 5d absorption bands are respectively at similar to 405 and similar to 430 nm for Ce(1)(3+) [i.e., Ce3+ in Sr(1)(2+) site] and Ce(2)(3+) [i.e., Ce3+ in Sr(2)(2+) site] centers, while the emissions from relaxed 5d state to 2F(5/2) ground state are respectively at similar to 456 nm for Ce(1)(3+) and similar to 567 rim for Ce(2)(3+).
Enhanced afterglow performance of CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Nd3+ phosphors by co-doping Gd3+

Abstract:In order to effectively improve the afterglow properties of CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Nd3+ phosphors, a series of Ca0.982–x Al2O4:0.012Eu2+,0.006Nd3+,xGd3+ (x = 0,0.012,0.024,0.036,0.048,0.060 mol) phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-phase approach. Crystalline composition and microstructure were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS, luminescence properties were systematically analyzed by fluorescence spectra, afterglow decay curves and TL glow curve. Results show that all of Ca0.982–x Al2O4:0.012Eu2+,0.006Nd3+,xGd3+ phosphors belong to monoclinic CaAl2O4, without other cystalline phase. The blue emission at 442 nm is observed, which is assigned to the 4f65d →4f7 transition of Eu2+ ions. Doping with appropriate amount of Gd3+ ions (x = 0.036mol) significantly improves the afterglow properties of phosphors, but the excessive doping of Gd3+ induces the fluorescent quenching. The doping of moderate Gd3+ changes the traps states, the trap depth varies from 0.598 to 0.644 eV and the trap concentration is also greatly improved, thus significantly improving afterglow performance.

Abstract:The Gd2O3:Er3+,Yb3+ nanometer phosphors coated with SiO2 was synthesized by the micro-emulsion method.The X-ray diffraction result indicated that the prepared powder crystallized in a cubic structure.The TEM pictures demonstrated that the powders had the near spherical shape and the particle size was about 10~40 nm.The up-conversion luminescence spectra of the phosphors had two groups of emission,corresponding to the 4S3/2/2H11/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+,respectively,when excited by 980 nm.The strongest peak in green range was 562 nm and that in red range was 660 nm.The research on luminescent intensity and the exciting power relations revealed that this up-conversion process was a double-photons process.The energy transfer and excited-state absorption were the main mechanism on the up-converting luminescence.Because nanometer Gd2O3(nucleus)/SiO2(shell)had highly effective performance on the up-converting luminescence and it was easy to dissolve in the water and to unite with organic matter and biological member.
