Abstract:High-voltage spinel cobalt-free LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 (LNMO) is one of the most promising cathode candidates for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high specific capacity, high operating voltage, and low cost. However, inferior electronic conductivity, transition metal dissolution, and fast capacity degradation of LNMO, especially in high mass loading for high areal capacity, are the critical material challenges for its practical application. Herein, trace multiple Cr-Fe-Cu elements doping of LiNi0.45 Cr0.0167 Fe0.0167 Cu0.0167 Mn1.5 O4 (CFC0.5-LNMO) cathode is achieved by a blow-spinning strategy to exhibit very stable cycling at a practical level of areal capacity up to 3 mAh cm-2 . It is demonstrated that the Cu, Fe, and Cr doping into the LNMO lattice can suspend the Mn dissolution and improve the Li ion diffusivity and electronic conductivity of the LNMO host. As a result, the obtained CFC0.5-LNMO cathode exhibits an excellent rate performance (1.75 mAh cm-2 at 1C) and long cycling stability under an areal capacity of 3 mAh cm-2 (78% capacity retention over 300 cycles at 0.5C).

Abstract:Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O-2 (x >= 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g(-1). Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the alpha-NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer-sized Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single-crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge-discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume-change-induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g(-1) at 3.0-4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials.

Abstract:Element doping of transition metal (TM) ions is commonly employed in the enhancement of structural and interfacial stability of layered nickel-rich cathode materials to construct high energy density lithium-ion batter-ies. However, one of the main factors for structural evolution and poor electrochemical stability of the layered nickel-rich cathode materials is the inherent Li+/Ni2+ disorder caused by dopants. To regulate the cation mix-ing, herein, the Li-doping is introduced into the TM slabs of the LiNiO2-based materials. Benefited from the charge compensation of the TM layers, the doped Li+ ions lead to the alleviation of the Li+/Ni2+ disorder gen-erated during the synthesis stage and electrochemical charge/discharge cycles. It is demonstrated that proper amount of the doped Li+ ions would enhance the stability of the crystal lattice, improve the Li+ diffusion between electrode and electrolyte, and suppress the microcrack formation in the secondary grains of the mate-rials. This is verified by the synergistic effect of Li/Mn co-doping, in particular, the LiNiO2-based layered mate-rial with 11 mol% Li and 1 mol% Mn exhibits great improvement in long-term cycling stability with capacity retention 71.11% after 200 cycles at 0.5C. The Li-doping strategy might provide a new perspective to the enhancement of structural stability of the layered nickel-rich materials for lithium-ion batteries in the future.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered cathodes have become the promising candidates for the next-generation high-energy Li-ion batteries due to their high energy density and competitive cost. However, they suffer from rapid capacity fading due to the structural and interfacial instability upon long-term operation. Herein, the Ti-doped and LiYO2-coated Ni-rich layered cathode has been synthesized via a facile one-step sintering strategy, which significantly restrains the interfacial parasitic side reactions and enhances the structural stability. Specifically, the trace Ti4+ doping greatly stabilizes the lattice oxygen and alleviates the Li/Ni disorder while the LiYO2 coating layer can prevent the erosion of the cathode by the electrolyte during cycles. As a result, the Ti-NCM83@LYO delivers a high specific capacity of 135 mAh g−1 even at 10C and there is almost no capacity loss at 1C for 100 cycles. This work provides a simple one-step dual-modification strategy to meet the commercial requirements of Ni-rich cathodes.
Zr/Ti Trace Co-Doping Induced Disordered Structure to Enhance the Cycling Stability of Li-rich Mn-based Layered Oxide Cathodes

Abstract:Due to the ultrahigh energy density, Li-rich Mn-based layered oxide cathodes have attracted great attentions. However, the irreversible structural transformation usually leads to long-cycled capacity decay, which severely restricts their practical applications. Here, a Zr/Ti trace co-doping strategy is proposed to stabilize the structure and obtain excellent electrochemical performance by constructing bulk phase disorder and surface Zr-enriched structures. The designed Li 1.2 Mn 0.53 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Zr 0.005 Ti 0.005 O 2 (ZT-LRM) not only shows a higher specific capacity but also achieves an excellent long-cycle performance. The capacity retention of ZT-LRM is 69% after 500 cycles at 5C (1250 mA g −1 ), which is much higher than that (34%) of the Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 cathode. Neutron powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are used to demonstrate the disordered structure in the particles and the line scanning proves the surface Zr enrichment. In-situ X-ray diffraction verifies the more stable structural evolutions of the ZT-LRM during cycling. This simple modification method provides a reference for commercial applications of Li-rich Mn-based layered oxide cathodes.

Trace Y Doping Regulated Bulk/Interfacial Reactions of P2‐Layered Oxides for Ultrahigh‐Rate Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Herein, a dual‐stabilization effect of Y dopant on both the evolution of bulk structure and cathode's interphase with the electrolyte is achieved via a co‐precipitation method followed by solid‐state reaction. Remarkably, the trace amounts of Y dopant achieve the cycling durability and ultrahigh rate capacity. P2‐phase layered cathodes play a pivotal role in sodium‐ion batteries due to their efficient Na+ intercalation chemistry. However, limited by crystal disintegration and interfacial instability, bulk and interfacial failure plague their electrochemical performance. To address these challenges, a structural enhancement combined with surface modification is achieved through trace Y doping. Based on a synergistic combination of experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the introduction of partial Y ions at the Na site (2d) acts as a stabilizing pillar, mitigating the electrostatic repulsions between adjacent TMO2 slabs and thereby relieving internal structural stress. Furthermore, the presence of Y effectively optimizes the Ni 3d‐O 2p hybridization, resulting in enhanced electronic conductivity and a notable rapid charging ability, with a capacity of 77.3 mA h g−1 at 40 C. Concurrently, the introduction of Y also induces the formation of perovskite nano‐islands, which serve to minimize side reactions and modulate interfacial diffusion. As a result, the refined P2‐Na0.65 Y0.025[Ni0.33Mn0.67]O2 cathode material exhibits an exceptionally low volume variation (≈1.99%), an impressive capacity retention of 83.3% even at −40 °C after1500 cycles at 1 C.

Improving the Cycle Stability of LiNiO2 through Al3+ Doping and LiAlO2 Coating

Abstract:In this study, we addressed the poor cycling and rate performance of LiNiO2, a material with ultrahigh nickel content considered a strong contender for high-energy-density lithium-ion battery cathodes. We introduced nano-Al2O3 during the lithiation process to achieve dual modified material through bulk phase element doping and in situ LiAlO2 coating. Comparison revealed notable improvements in the modified materials. In particular, LiNi0.99Al0.01O2 maintained a capacity retention rate of 73.1% after 300 cycles in a long-cycle test at 0.5C current density, outperforming the undoped material. In rate performance tests, the doped samples consistently exhibited higher discharge-specific capacities than that of the undoped counterpart. Notably, at a high current density of 5C, LiNi0.99Al0.01O2 exhibited a discharge-specific capacity of 101.75 mAh g-1. The results indicate that an appropriate amount of Al doping can effectively stabilize the layered structure of the cathode material and delay the irreversible phase transition from H2 to H3. Further, Al doping facilitates the formation of a LiAlO2 coating on the surface of the particles. This coating acts as a fast-ion conductor, enhancing the transport of lithium ions and reducing the erosion of the active material by the electrolyte.

Abstract:Structural instability at high voltage severely restricts the reversible capacity of the LiCoO2 cathode. Moreover, the main difficulties in achieving high-rate performance of LiCoO2 are the long Li+ diffusion distance and slow Li+ intercalation/extraction during the cycle. Thus, we designed a modification strategy of nanosizing and tri-element co-doping to synergistically enhance the electrochemical performance of LiCoO2 at high voltage (4.6 V). Mg, Al, and Ti co-doping maintains the structural stability and phase transition reversibility, which promotes the cycling performance of LiCoO2. After 100 cycles at 1 C, the capacity retention of the modified LiCoO2 reached 94.3%. In addition, the tri-elemental co-doping increases Li+ interlayer spacing and enhances Li+ diffusivity by tens of times. Simultaneously, nanosize modification decreases Li+ diffusion distance, leading to a significantly enhanced rate capacity of 132 mA h g-1 at 10 C, much better than that of the unmodified LiCoO2 (2 mA h g-1). After 600 cycles at 5 C, the specific capacity remains at 135 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 91%. The nanosizing co-doping strategy synchronously enhanced the rate capability and cycling performance of LiCoO2.
Enhancing the Structural Stability and Electrochemical Performance of High-Nickel Cathode Materials through Ti Doping with an Exothermic Non-oxide Precursor

Abstract:The foreseeable global cobalt (Co) crisis has driven the demand for cathode materials with less Co dependence, where high-nickel layered oxides are a promising solution due to their high energy density and low cost. However, these materials suffer from poor cycling stability and rapid voltage decay due to lattice displacement and nanostrain accumulation. Here, we introduced an exothermic TiN dopant via a scalable coating method to stabilize LiNi0.917Co0.056Mn0.026O2 (NCM92) materials. The exothermic reaction of TiN conversion generates extra heat during the calcination process on the cathode surface, promotes the lithiation process, and tunes the morphology of the cathode material, resulting in compact and conformal smaller particle sizes to provide better particle integration and lithium diffusion coefficient. Moreover, the Ti dopant substitutes the Ni3+ site to generate stronger Ti-O bonding, leading to higher structural stability and extended cycle life. The Ti-doped NCM (NCM92_TiN) shows a remarkable cycling stability of maintaining 80% capacity retention for 400 cycles, while bare NCM92 can only reach 88 cycles. Furthermore, the NCM92_TiN cathodes demonstrate an enhanced rate capability and achieve a discharge capacity of over 168 mAh g-1 at 5C.
Improving the Structure and Cycling Stability of Ni-Rich Layered Cathodes by Dual Modification of Yttrium Doping and Surface Coating

Abstract:A crucial challenge for the commercialization of Ni-rich layered cathodes (LiNi0.88Co0.09Al0.03O2) is capacity decay during the cycling process, which originates from their interfacial instability and structural degradation. Herein, a one-step, dual-modified strategy is put forward to in situ synthesize the yttrium (Y)-doped and yttrium orthophosphate (YPO4)modified LiNi0.88Co0.09Al0.03O2 cathode material. It is confirmed that the YPO4 coating layer as a good ion conductor can stabilize the solid-electrolyte interface, while the formative strong Y-O bond can bridle TMO slabs to intensify the lattice structure in the state of deep delithium (>4.3 V). In particular, both the combined advantages effectively withstand the anisotropic strain generated upon the H2-H3 phase transition and further alleviate the crack generation in unit-cell dimensions, assuring a high-capacity delivery and fast Li+ diffusion kinetics. This dual-modified cathode shows advanced cycling stability (94.1% at 1C after 100 cycles in 2.7-4.3 V), even at a high cutoff voltage and high rate, and advanced rate capability (159.7 mAh g(-1) at 10C). Therefore, it provides a novel solution to achieve both high capacity and highly stable cyclability in Ni-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:As an important Co-free and Ni-rich layered oxide, LiNi0.9Mn0.1O2 (NM91) has garnered significant interest as a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. Despite its attractively high specific capacity, the intrinsic structural instability poses a great challenge to its electrochemical performances, especially cycling performance. In this work, we circumvent the structural instability issue of NM91 through high-valence Nb doping. Our findings reveal that high-valence Nb5+ dopants were successfully incorporated into the lattice of LiNi0.9Mn0.1O2, functioning as interlayer pillars that reinforce the structure and mitigate the detrimental H2 → H3 phase transition. This results in greatly improved cycling stability and rate capability of the cathode. The discharge capacities of 1%Nb-NM91 reached 211.8 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C and 159.3 mA h g–1 at 5 C, with a retention rate of 95.6% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, even superior to the previously reported lower Ni content counterparts, including LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2, LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, and so forth. This study demonstrates that high-valence Nb doping is a promising strategy to overcome the structural instability issue in LiNi0.9Mn0.1O2 and underscores the potential of Co-free Ni-rich layered oxides as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Affected by cobalt (Co) supply bottlenecks and high costs, Co-free Ni-rich layered cathodes are considered the most promising option for economical and sustainable development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Low-cost LiNi x Al 1− x O 2 ( x ≥ 0.9) cathode are rarely reported due to their chemo-mechanical instabilities and poor cycle life. Herein, we employ a strategy of Mg/W Li/Ni dual-site co-doping LiNi 0.9 Al 0.1 O 2 (named as LNA90) cathodes to enhance cycling stability by modifying the crystal structure and forming a center radially aligned microstructure. The Mg/W co-doped LiNi 0.9 Al 0.1 O 2 cathode (named as LNAMW) exhibits high capacity retention of 94.9% at 1 C and 3.0–4.5 V after 100 cycles with 22.0% increase over the pristine cathode LNA90 and maintains the intact particle morphology. Meanwhile, the cycling performance of LNAMW cathode exceeds that of most reported Ni-rich cathodes (Ni mol% > 80%). Our work offers a straightforward, efficient, and scalable strategy for the future design of Co-free Ni-rich cathodes to facilitate the development of economical lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:High-nickel ternary material is one of the most promising cathode materials with high energy density. However, this material has the disadvantages of poor cycling stability, poor thermal stability, and low safety. The synergetic effect of single crystal, element doping, and surface coating is an effective way to improve its electrochemical performance. In this work, the particle size of the single-crystal LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 (NCM811) material was controlled by LiCl–KCl flux, and the internal/external synergy of Ti4+ doping and LiTi2O4 coating was realized by the pretreatment of Ti(OC4H9)4 and a subsequent new temperature-changing sintering process. The single-crystal structure greatly improved the crushing of material, the Ti4+ doping effectively broadened the lattice spacing and stabilized the layered structure, and the uniform LiTi2O4 coating effectively eliminated excess lithium salts and promoted the stability of the interface structure. The electrochemical test results showed that the modified materials had excellent electrochemical properties, especially a high lithium-ion diffusion rate and high cycle stability. Therefore, it will provide a solid technical support for the synthesis of high-performance single-crystal high-nickel ternary cathode materials.

Abstract:As a kind of Ni-rich cathode material, LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 undergoes severe phase transition when cycling under a high cutoff voltage, causing a sharp decline in reversible capacity. In this study, we synthesize LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 with a range of Ti doping contents through a facile solid state approach. When the doping content is 1 mol %, it can still deliver a discharge capacity of 179.6 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 3.0-4.5 V, with a capacity retention of 97.4%, in comparison with 167.3 mAh g(-1) and 89.2%, respectively, for pristine Revealing the Effect of Ti Doping on Significantly Enhancing Cyclic Performance at a High Cutoff Voltage for Ni-Rich LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2. When LiNi(0.8)Co(0.15)Al(0.05)O(2 )cycles under a high cutoff voltage, the appropriate amount of Ti doping plays a role in stabilizing the structure and relieving the surface deterioration, which proves to be the key to the extremely superior cyclic performance even at 4.5 V.

Abstract:Multi-element co-doping and its impact on the stability of the ultrahigh-Ni cathodes during extended cell cycling have not yet been fully established. Synergistic mechanisms still need to be thoroughly understood, and there is potential for further enhancing the structural stability and electrochemical performance of layered cathode materials. In this work, an Nb and Mg co-doped ultrahigh-Ni cathodes (LiNi0.92Co0.06Mn0.02O2) is prepared by solid-state synthesis methods. The effect of Nb and Mg dopants on the microstructure and electrochemical properties are systematically investigated. It is found that the Nb dopant can overcome the main shortcomings provided by Mg doping, including increasing the unit cell volume, suppress harmful phase transformation and enhancing lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The cathode materials with optimized amounts of Nb and Mg dopants are demonstrated with excellent electrochemical performances. They reveal a specific capacity of 191 mAh g-1 at 1 C with a good capacity retention of 92.8% after 500 cycles and a rated capacity of 141 mAh g-1 at 10 C. It is also found that excessive Nb doping could lead to a decrease in rhombohedral ordering for crystal lattices, resulting in reduced structural stability and cyclability. This work investigates the strategy of Nb and Mg co-doping for enhancing electrochemical performances of ultrahigh-Ni cathodes, and the results obtained from this work can provide insights into improve the cyclability of these materials.
Trace-amount Triple-Doping of Ti, Mg, and B for Improving the Stability of Lattice Structure and Discharge Capacity of LiCoO2 at 4.6V

Abstract:Lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2) is the favored cathode material due to its exceptional volumetric energy density. An effective approach to enhancing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries is to elevating the operating voltage of LiCoO2. However, lithium cobalt oxide will experience unfavorable phase transitions from O3 phase to H1-3 phase, as well as irreversible oxygen oxidation reactions at high voltages, which deteriorate its electrochemical performance. Here, we propose a triple-doping strategy involving metal elements Ti, Mg, and non-metal elements B. Introducing Mg and Ti into the LiCoO2 lattice not only suppress hazardous phase transitions during highvoltage cycling, but also enhance surface lattice oxygen stability and prevent the escape of lattice oxygen during high voltage cycling. Moreover, it increases the c-axis spacing, which improve the diffusion rate of Li+ ions during cycling. The B doping helps metal elements Mg and Ti better diffuse into the particle interiors, while reducing the size of LiCoO2 particles. After Ti-Mg-B triple-doping, the LiCoO2 cathode material has an initial discharge capacity of 233.7 mAh & BULL;g ? 1 within the range of 3.0 - 4.6 V at 0.5 C, with the residual capacity of 183 mAh & BULL;g ? 1 after 100 cycles. The modified sample still remain a reversible capacity of 94.7mAh & BULL;g ? 1 at a current density of 10 C. Our studied doping strategy significantly improves the cycling stability of LiCoO2 at 4.6 V, while further enhancing the capacity of lithium batteries.
Dual-Modified Compact Layer and Superficial Ti Doping for Reinforced Structural Integrity and Thermal Stability of Ni-Rich Cathodes

Abstract:Nickel-rich layered oxides have been regarded as a potential cathode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries because of the high specific capacity and low cost. However, the rapid capacity fading due to interfacial side reactions and bulk structural degradation seriously encumbers its commercialization. Herein, a highly stable hybrid surface architecture, which integrates an outer coating layer of TiO2&Li2TiO3 and a surficial titanium doping by incorporated Ti2O3, is carefully designed to enhance the structural stability and eliminate lithium impurity. Meanwhile, the surficial titanium doping induces a nanoscale cation-mixing layer, which suppresses transition-metal-ion migration and ameliorates the reversibility of the H2 → H3 phase transition. Also, the Li2TiO3 coating layer with three-dimensional channels promotes ion transportation. Moreover, the electrochemically stable TiO2 coating layer restrains side reactions and reinforces interfacial stability. With the collaboration of titanium doping and TiO2&Li2TiO3 hybrid coating, the sample with 1 mol % modified achieves a capacity retention of 93.02% after 100 cycles with a voltage decay of only 0.03 V and up to 84.62% at a high voltage of 3.0-4.5 V. Furthermore, the ordered occupation of Ni ions in the Li layer boosts the thermal stability by procrastinating the layered-to-rock salt phase transition. This work provides a straightforward and economical modification strategy for boosting the structural and thermal stability of nickel-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:Single-crystalline LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathodes have received great attention due to their high discharge capacity and better electrochemical performance. However, the single-crystal materials are suffering from severe lattice distortion and electrode/electrolyte interface side reactions when cycling at high voltage. Herein, a unique single-crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 with Al and Zr doping in the bulk and a self-formed coating layer of Li2ZrO3 in the surface has been constructed by a facile strategy. The optimized cathode material exhibits excellent structural stability and cycling performance at room/elevated temperatures after long-term cycling. Specifically, even after 100 cycles (1C, 3.0-4.4 V) at 50 degrees C, the capacity retention for the Al and Zr co-doped sample reaches 92.1%, which is much higher than those of the single Al-doped (85.4%), single Zr-doped (87.1%), and bare samples (76.3%). The characterization results and first-principles calculations reveal that the excellent electrochemical properties are attributed to the stable structure and interface, in which the Al and Zr co-doping hinders cation mixing and suppresses detrimental phase transformations to reduce internal stress and mitigate microcracks, and the coating layer of Li2ZrO3 can protect the surface and suppress interfacial parasitic reactions. Overall, this work provides important insights into how to simultaneously build a stable bulk structure and interface for the single-crystal NCM cathode via a facile preparation process.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered metal oxide of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM) is a promising cathode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The fast capacity fading caused by interfacial instability, bulk structural degradation and side reactions on electrode/electrolyte interface during cycling hampers its larger scale commercial applications. In this work, a combined modification strategy was implemented by coating with Li2TiO3 on particle surface and doping with PO4 3− polyanion in bulk of the NCM cathode material. The large tetrahedral PO4 3− polyanions doped into lattice structure suppresses cationic mixing and structure degradation, while the Li2TiO3 coating layer protects the particle surface and restrains side reactions. The co-modification strengthens overall structure stability for an excellent cycling performance. Moreover, the thin layered Li2TiO3 coating material with three-dimensional channels for ion transport and the enlarged interlayer spacing by PO4 3−-doping enhance capacity and facilitate Li+ ions diffusing. These factors result in a superior rate capability. With the collaborative cooperation of Li2TiO3 coating and PO4 3− doping, the sample with 1 mol% coating and 0.03 mol% doping content delivers a reversible specific capacity of 167.2 mAh g−1 at 5C and 157.8 mAh g−1 at 10C, remains a capacity of 147.7 mAh g−1 at 1C after a long term 800 cycles with a retention of 77.4% at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V.

Abstract:Herein, we construct a Ti-rich interface of a LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) secondary particle using titanium nitride (TiN) nanopowders as a dopant to reduce interfacial reaction. Results show that Ti ions integrate into the layered lattice during the dissociation of Ti-N and was enriched within the surface layer. The solid Ti-O bonding effectively enhances the interface stability and reduces lattice change toward an improved cycle stability. As a result, continuous growth of CEI film and dissolution of transition metal elements were depressed. Both thinner cathode-electrolyte interphases (CEI) and phase transition layers form on the surface of particles after a long cycle. The Ti-doping NCA cathode (NCATiN) provides a better capacity retention of 90.9% over 200 cycles.
