Abstract:Ordered mesoporous UO2 with 3-D structure (for UO2-KIT-6) and nanowire bundles (for UO2-SBA-15) was synthesized for the first time by a nanocasting route using different ordered mesoporous silica (KIT-6 and SBA-15, respectively) as templates and uranyl nitrate hexahydrate as the metal precursor. The uranyl nitrate was impregnated into the mesopore of the silica template and was converted to U3O8 after the first step. The synthesis of ordered UO2 mesostructure was achieved by reducing the mesoporous U3O8 with silica composites under 5% H-2/Ar atmosphere at 700 degrees C, followed by a template removal process. The as-prepared UO2-KIT-6 had a particle size of several millimeters, and was constructed with uncoupled subframework mesostructure and crystalline walls, while UO2-SBA-15 possessed a rope-like morphology and consisted of nanowire arrays. The surface area and pore volume of ordered UO2 mesostructure are 47.2m(2) g(-1) and 0.23 cm(3) g(-1) for the UO2-KIT-6, and 54.4m(2) g(-1) and 0.28 cm(3) g(-1) for the UO2-SBA-15, respectively.

Abstract:Porous copper oxide has been synthesized via copper oxalate precursor, which was prepared in mild condition without any template or additive. Powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen physisorption method are used to characterize various properties of the obtained samples. SEM analyses show that the precursor morphology was maintained after calcination, and the obtained hierarchically copper oxide was built up of nanocrystals. Nitrogen physisorption analyses show that copper oxide samples were very porous. The porous material could be found application in catalysis field.
Influence of Interphase Distribution of Reactants on Preparation of Nano-CuO by Adsorption Phase Technique

Abstract:CuO nanoparticles were synthesized in a nanoreactor formed by adsorption layer on silica surface. Adsorption capacity measuration experiment with different water concentrations, solvent substitution experiment and reaction-before-adsorption experiment showed that the water adsorption layer existed on the SiO2 surface and served as a place reaction mainly occurring. The three-region distribution model of Cu2+ in this system was proposed according to the adsorption data. The increase of water concentration and NaOH concentration in system will both made more Cu2+ migrate to the adsorption layer region. XRD analysis indicated that the rise of temperature and the increase of NaOH concentration were both in favor of the smaller CuO grain formation. The growth of CuO grain was restricted by the adsorption layer, which became thinner with temperature rising. And the nucleation rate accelerated as the supersaturation degree in adsorption layer increased with the NaOH concentration rising.

Abstract:To research and control the CuO particle growth,a novel preparation method using adsorption phase nanoreactor technique was proposed.CuO nanoparticles were synthesized in a nanoreactor formed by adsorption layer on SiO_2 surface.The adsorption rate of copper ion was measured by complexo-metric titration.The characteristics of reaction and adsorption process were investigated by XRD,TEM,EDX and solvent-substituted.The results indicate that the adsorption of copper ion achieves equilibrium in less than 1 h and more than 60% copper ions are adsorbed on the SiO_2 surface.The adsorption layer volume decreases and the complexation adsorption enhances with the increasing temperature.The grain size of CuO decreases owing to the limit of adsorption layer.The reaction occurs in the adsorption layer,and the copper quantity reaches the maximum rapidly and does not change with increasing water due to a saltation of SiO_2 surface environment.

Abstract:A simple, one-step synthetic route to prepare ordered mesoporous silica monoliths with controllable quantities of metal oxide nanocrystals in their channels is presented. The method is based on the assisted assembly effect for mesostructure-directing of the metal complexes formed by the interaction of metal ions with the -O- groups of copolymers. Highly ordered hexagonal silica monoliths, loaded with various metal oxide nanocrystals, including those of Cr2O3, MnO, Fe2O3, Co3O4, NiO, CuO, ZnO, CdO, SnO2, and In2O3, can be obtained by this one-step pathway. In the NiO/SiO2 nanocomposite, nickel oxide nanorods with face-centered cubic lattices are formed at low doping ratios, and they can be transformed into nanowires by increasing the quantities of the precursors. In the Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, a one-dimensional assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles is observed. In the In2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites, single crystal nanowires with high aspect ratios are obtained. For the other metal oxide nanocomposites, including Cr2O3, MnO, Co3O4, CuO, ZnO, CdO, and SnO, only crystalline nanorods are obtained. N-2 sorption results of the metal oxide/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites reveal that nanocrystals inside the pores do not severely decrease the pore volume or the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the mesoporous silica host. The band-gaps of SnO2 and In2O3 nanocrystals, calculated from UV-vis spectra, are much larger than the corresponding bulk materials, implying the quantum confinement effect in the small particles. Co3O4/SiO2 mesostructured nanocomposites catalyze the complete combustion of CH4. These studies provide a new and simple method for templating synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the synthesis of mesoporous nanocrystalline Co3O4 via a one-step, convenient and inexpensive method. The obtained Co3O4 powder samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption experiments and transmission electron microscopy. It is revealed that the molar ratio of the reactant and the calcination temperature had a significant influence on the morphology and the pore-sized distribution of the Co3O4 samples. A possible formation mechanism of mesoporous Co3O4 nanocrystalline is proposed.

Abstract:A novel type of uranium-containing microspheres with an urchin-like hierarchical nano/microstructure has been successfully synthesized by a facile template-free hydrothermal method with uranyl nitrate hexahydrate, urea, and glycerol as the uranium source, precipitating agent, and shape-controlling agent, respectively. The as-synthesized microspheres were usually a few micrometers in size and porous inside, and their shells were composed of nanoscale rod-shaped crystals. The growth mechanism of the hydrothermal reaction was studied, revealing that temperature, ratios of reactants, solution pH, and reaction time were all critical for the growth. The mechanism study also revealed that an intermediate compound of 3UO(3)center dot NH3 center dot 5H(2)O was first formed and then gradually converted into the final hydrothermal product. These uranium-containing microspheres were excellent precursors to synthesize porous uranium oxide microspheres. With a suitable calcination temperature, very uniform microspheres of uranium oxides (UO2+x, U3O8, and UO3) were successfully synthesized.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon with high surface area and ordered structure was synthesized via a nanocasting process using mesoprous MCM-41 silica as a template and sucrose as a carbon precursor. Sample was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and nitrogen adsorption. The results show that the templated carbon has a BTE surface area similar to 1200 m(2)/g, a pore volume similar to 1.0 cm(3)/g, and a bimodal porosity centered at around 4 mn and 46 nm.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials are of technological interest because of their applications ranging from catalysts, molecular sieves, separation technology and gas sensors, to batteries and electronics 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . Here we demonstrate a synthetic methodology that allows us to create an ordered mesoporous nanocomposite with a crystalline oxide framework. We design a 'nanocrystal–glass' configuration to build a nanoarchitecture by means of surfactant-templated self-assembly followed by the controlled in-situ crystallization of materials. Functional nanocrystals are used as the building blocks of ordered mesopores, and the glass phase can act both as the 'glue' between nanocrystals and as a functionalized component in the composites. Specifically, we demonstrate this methodology for ordered mesoporous nanocomposites consisting of electrochemically active nanocrystals and semiconductive glass in the TiO 2 –P 2 O 5 –M x O y systems (where M is a metal ion). This approach could be applied to many other multicomponent oxides to fabricate mesoporous nanocomposites for numerous uses.

Abstract:A synthesis for easily shaped Ti-containing mesoporous silicates has been reported, which uses as-prepared mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a host template, an inorganic titanium salt (such as TiCl3 or TiOSO4) as a titanium source and water as a solvent. The synthesis involves three steps: obtaining as-prepared mesostructured silicate, grafting functional moieties, and thermal treatment, which is feasible in industry. The as-prepared titanium-containing mesostructured silicates can be easily shaped. XRD, N-2 sorption isotherms, TEM, FT-IR and UV-vis techniques reveal that Ti-containing mesoporous silicates after calcination have the highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructure, high surface areas (475-837 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.56-0.92 cm(3)/g), uniform pore sizes (6.4-7.3 nm), and tetrahedrally incorporated titanium species in silica frameworks. The titanium source has a great influence on grafting.
Facile Synthesis for Ordered Mesoporous Gamma-Aluminas with High Thermal Stability

Abstract:The facile synthesis of highly ordered mesoporous aluminas with high thermal stability and tunable pore sizes is systematically investigated. The general synthesis strategy is based on a sol-gel process associated with nonionic block copolymer as templates in ethanol solvent. Small-angle XRD, TEM, and nitrogen adsorption and desorption results show that these mesoporous aluminas possess a highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure, which is resistant to high temperature up to 1000 degrees C. Ordered mesoporous structures with tunable pore sizes are obtained with various precursors, different acids as pH adjustors, and different block copolymers as templates. These mesoporous aluminas have large surface areas (ca. 400 m(2)/g), pore volumes (ca. 0.70 cm(3)/g), and narrow pore-size distributions. The influence of the complexation ability of anions and hydro-carboxylic acid, acid volatility, and other important synthesis conditions are discussed in detail. Utilizing this simple strategy, we also obtained partly ordered mesoporous alumina with hydrous aluminum nitrate as the precursor. FTIR pyridine adsorption measurements indicate that a large amount of Lewis acid sites exist in these mesoporous aluminas. These materials are expected to be good candidates in catalysis due to the uniform pore structures, large surface areas, tunable pore sizes, and large amounts of surface Lewis acid sites. Loaded with ruthenium, the representative mesoporous alumina exhibits reactant size selectivity in hydrogenation of acetone, D-glucose, and D-(+)-cellobiose as a test reaction, indicating the potential applications in shape-selective catalysis.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient route is developed for controllable synthesis of ordered mesoporous alumina (OMA) materials with variable pore architectures and high mesoporosity, as well as crystalline framework. The route is based on the nanocasting pathway with bimodal mesoporous carbon as the hard template. In contrast to conventional reports, we first realize the possibility of creating two ordered mesopore architectures by using a single carbon hard template obtained from organic-organic self-assembly, which is also the first time such carbon materials are adopted to replicate ordered mesoporous materials. The mesopore architecture and surface property of the carbon template are rationally designed in order to obtain ordered alumina mesostructures. We found that the key factors rely on the unique bimodal mesopore architecture and surface functionalization of the carbon hard template. Namely, the bimodal mesopores (2.3 and 5.9 nm) and the surface functionalities make it possible to selectively load alumina into the small mesopores dominantly and/or with a layer of alumina coated on the inner surface of the large primary mesopores with different thicknesses until full loading is achieved. Thus, OMA materials with variable pore architectures (similar and reverse mesostructures relative to the carbon template) and controllable mesoporosity in a wide range are achieved. Meanwhile, in situ ammonia hydrolysis for conversion of the metal precursor to its hydroxide is helpful for easy crystallization (as low as approximately 500 degrees C). Well-crystallized alumina frameworks composed of gamma-Al(2)O(3) nanocrystals with sizes of 6-7 nm are obtained after burning out the carbon template at 600 degrees C, which is advantageous over soft-templated aluminas. The effects of synthesis factors are demonstrated and discussed relative to control experiments. Furthermore, our method is versatile enough to be used for general synthesis of other important but difficult-to-synthesize mesoporous metal oxides, such as magnesium oxide. We believe that the fundamentals in this research will provide new insights for rational synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Metal oxides with high porosity usually exhibit better performance in many applications, as compared with the corresponding bulk materials. Template-assisted method is generally employed to prepare porous metal oxides. However, the template-assisted method is commonly operated in wet conditions, which requires solvents, soluble metal oxide precursors, and a long time for drying. To overwhelm those drawbacks of the wet procedure, a mechanochemical nano casting method is developed in the current work. Inspired by solid-state synthesis, this strategy proceeds without solvents, and the ball milling process can enable pores replicated in a shorter time (60 min). By this method, a series of highly porous metal oxides were obtained, with several cases approaching the corresponding surface area records (e.g., ZrO2, 293 m(2) g(-1); Fe2O3, 163 m(2) g(-1); CeO2, 211 m(2) g(-1); CuOx-CeOy catalyst, 237 m(2) g(-1); CuOx-CoOy-CeOz catalyst, 203 m(2) g(-1)). Abundant nanopores with clear lattice fringes in metal oxide products were witnessed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in high angle annular dark field (HAADF). By combination of mechanochemical synthesis and nanocasting, current technology provides a general and simple pathway to porous metal oxides.

Abstract:A simple one-step nanocasting route has been demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbon with graphitic frameworks. In the synthesis, the complicated carbon precursor impregnation step is no longer used and the carbon precursor (soybean oil) is incorporated into the mesopore channels in the hydrophobic domain of the triblock copolymers due to the coordination function through the preparation the ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15. It was found that the as-prepared graphitic carbon material has an ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure with a rod-like morphology, a high specific surface area (813.7 m(2) g(-1)) and a large pore volume (0.758 cm(3) g(-1)), giving the material wide potential applications as catalyst support, adsorbent and electrode material.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolite is hydrothermally synthesized inside the 3D ordered macroporous (3DOM) Co3O4 templates. Precise replication of the nanostructure and chemical recycling of the Co3O4 templates are achieved. Moreover, the unexpected fast crystallization of zeolite is confirmed. Not only is the challenge of conventional carbon templates overcome, but insights into the zeolite–oxide nanocomposite are also obtained. The synthesis of mesoporous zeolites has garnered attention with regard to improving their catalytic and adsorption performances. While the hard‐templating method provides opportunities to design precisely controlled hierarchical micro‐ and mesoporous structures, synthesizing mesoporous zeolites without external precipitation requires significant work. This is mainly due to the absence of usable templates other than carbon with hydrophobic surfaces. Herein, it is demonstrated that the Co3O4 template is valuable in preparing mesoporous silicalite‐1 and ZSM‐5 with a precisely controlled porous structure through hydrothermal synthesis. Unlike conventional carbon templates, the Co3O4 template is relatively hydrophilic, effective in suppressing external precipitation, and is reusable by dissolving in an acidic solution. The crystallization process also differs from that of the carbon template, as the silicate precipitates on a 3D ordered nanoporous Co3O4 scaffold, followed by crystallization and crystal growth. Furthermore, it is unexpectedly observed that the zeolite crystallization is accelerated in the Co3O4 template. The synthetic approach utilizing nanoporous metal oxides opens new doors for the control of the hierarchical structure of zeolites, as well as for the design of metal oxide–zeolite nanocomposite catalysts, due to the potential extensibility of the combination of metal oxides and zeolites.

Abstract:Recently, extensive works have been devoted to the morphology control of mesoporous materials with respect to their use in various applications. In this paper, we used two kinds of mesoporous silica, SBA-15 rods and spheres as hard templates to synthesize morphology-controllable mesoporous metal oxides. By carefully controlling the loading of metal precursors in the mesopores of the hard template, mesoporous Co3O4 and CeO2 with different morphologies, such as micrometer-sized rod, hollow sphere, saucer-like sphere, and solid sphere were conveniently obtained. The structural properties of these materials were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and TEM. In addition, it is found that the differences observed in the textural properties of the two mesoporous metal oxides nanocasted from the same template can be attributed to the properties of metal precursors and the interaction between metal oxide and SiO2. Thus-obtained mesoporous metal oxides with such special morphologies may have a potential application in the field of environmental catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:The synthesis of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials without growth modifiers and mesoporogens remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we report a general synthetic approach to produce hierarchical nanosized single-crystal aluminophosphate molecular sieves by preparing highly homogeneous and concentrated precursors and heating at elevated temperatures. Accordingly, aluminophosphate zeotypes of LTA (8-rings), AEL (10-rings), AFI (12-rings), and -CLO (20-rings) topologies, ranging from small to extra-large pores, were synthesized. These materials show exceptional properties, including small crystallites (30-150 nm), good monodispersity, abundant mesopores, and excellent thermal stability. A time-dependent study revealed a non-classical crystallization pathway by particle attachment. This work opens a new avenue for the development of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials and understanding their crystallization mechanism.

Abstract:Alumina materials with ordered mesostructure and hierarchical porosity have been synthesized via a one-step process using aluminum iso-propoxide as an inorganic precursor, pluronic P123 as a template, hydrochloric acid and citric acid as the pH adjustors, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) as a swelling agent. These mesoporous aluminas have relatively high surface areas (up to 309m2/g), pore volumes (∼0.51cm3/g), large pore sizes (up to 7.5nm), and high thermal stability (up to 900°C). In addition, the weight ratios of TMB/P123 play an important role in the synthesis process for controlling the mesostructures and pore sizes of the materials. The alumina with highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructure (space group p6mm) can be synthesized with the weight ratios of TMB/P123 ranging from 0 to 3. Simultaneously, the pore sizes of ordered mesoporous aluminas were gradually enlarged with the increase of the TMB content. However, phase transformation of the mesoporous alumina from the 2-D hexagonal to hierarchical could be realized when the TMB/P123 weight ratio was increased to 5.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous CoFe2O4 magnetic nanopartides were successfully synthesized via a novel moIten-saIt-assisted nanocasting process. Highly ordered mesostructures were negativeIy rephcated from the mesoporous siIica tempIate of SBA-15. The time that the whoIe synthetic process took was significanty shortened by a faclle moIten-saIt mixing pretreatment, instead of conventionally used ethanoI impregnation of the precursors. Mesoporous bimetaI oxide CoFe2O4 nanopartides of high quaIity were eventually obtained, whlle the totaI processing time was reduced by dozens of hours. In addition, effects of the rarely investigated factor, caIcining heating rate were studied systematically. XRD and TEM characterization indicates that both the phase purity and crystallinity of products fell and the highly ordered mesostructures were destroyed gradually as heating rate accelerated. Further, both the specific surface areas and the magnetic properties of as-synthesized mesoporous CoFe2O4 nanopartides dropped when quicker caIcining heating rates were used. Therefore, in order to obtain highly ordered and crystalline mesoporous CoFe2O4 nanopartides of Large specific surface area (150.20 m(2) g(-1)) and saturation magnetization (69.07 emu g(-1)), utllizing reIativeIy Low caIcining heating rates (i.e. no quicker than 3 degrees C min(-1)) was recommended. Additionally, it is beheved that our research findings would help industrial applications of mesoporous CoFe2O4 nanopartides in many fields Like magnetic recording, concerted catalysts, electrode materials and drug delivery.
