Abstract:To understand the influence of reactant internal excitation and orientation on the dissociative chemisorption of water on Cu(111), a quasi-seven-dimensional quantum dynamics study has been carried out on a refined potential energy surface (PES). The new PES was modified in the asymptotic region to allow an accurate characterization of the H(2)O ro-vibrational levels. The mode selectivity of the reaction was reexamined on the new PES and found to be consistent with our earlier work. To rationalize the observed mode selectivity, a vibrationally adiabatic reaction path model was determined on this PES. Furthermore, the reactivity for various rotationally excited H(2)O was investigated. It is shown that even low rotational excitation in H(2)O can either enhance or inhibit the reaction and the reactivity depends on the orientation of the impinging molecule.
Enhancing Dissociative Chemisorption of H2o on Cu(111) Via Vibrational Excitation

Abstract:The dissociative chemisorption of water is an important step in many heterogeneous catalytic processes. Here, the mode selectivity of this process was examined quantum mechanically on a realistic potential energy surface determined by fitting planewave density functional calculations spanning a large configuration space. The quantum dynamics of the surface reaction were characterized by a six-dimensional model including all important internal coordinates of H2O and its distance to the surface. It was found that excitations in all three vibrational modes are capable of enhancing reactivity more effectively than increasing translational energy, consistent with the "late" transition state in the reaction path.
Solving Optimal Power Flow Using Modified Bacterial Foraging Algorithm Considering FACTS Devices

Abstract:In this paper, a new Modified Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (MBFA) method is developed to incorporate FACTS devices in optimal power flow (OPF) problem. This method can provide an enhanced economic solution with the use of controllable FACTS devices. Two types of FACTS devices, thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSC) and Static VAR Compensator (SVC) are considered in this method. The basic bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) is an evolutionary optimization technique inspired by the foraging behavior of the E. coli bacteria. The strategy of the OPF problem is decomposed in two sub-problems, the first sub-problem related to active power planning to minimize the fuel cost function, and the second sub-problem designed to make corrections to the voltage deviation and reactive power violation based in an efficient reactive power planning of multi Static VAR Compensator (SVC). The specified power flow control constraints due to the use of FACTS devices are included in the OPF problem. The proposed method decomposes the solution of such modified OPF problem into two sub problems’ iteration. The first sub problem is a power flow control problem and the second sub problem is a modified Bacterial foraging algorithm (MBFA) OPF problem. The two sub problems are solved iteratively until convergence. Case studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Cobalt is a widely used catalyst for many heterogeneous reactions, including the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, which converts syngas (H2 and CO) to higher hydrocarbons. As a result, a better understanding of the key chemical steps on the Co surface, such as the dissociative chemisorption of H2 as an initial step of the FT process, is of fundamental importance. Here, we report an accurate full-dimensional global potential energy surface for the dissociative chemisorption of H2 on the rigid Co(0001) surface constructed from more than 3000 density functional theory points. The high-fidelity potential energy surface was obtained using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method, which preserves both the permutation symmetry of H2 and translational symmetry of the Co(0001) surface. The reaction path features a very low barrier on the top site. Full-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations provide insights into the dissociation dynamics and influence of the initial vibrational, rotational, and orientational degrees of freedom.

Abstract:The bond selectivity in dissociative chemisorption of HOD on Cu(111) is investigated using a six-dimensional quantum model. It includes all vibrational modes of the impinging molecule on a density functional theory based interaction potential between the molecule and metal surface. It is shown that excitations in the HOD local stretching modes selectively enhance cleavage of the excited bond. This pronounced bond selectivity is attributed to a “late” or “product-like” barrier on the potential energy surface for the dissociative chemisorption and the slow intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution in the water molecule. The existence of mode and bond selectivities also underscores the inadequacy of statistical based transition-state theory in describing this industrially important surface reaction.

Abstract:The mode-specific dynamics for the dissociative chemisorption of H2O on rigid Ni(100) is investigated by approximate nine-dimensional (9D) quantum dynamics calculations. The vibrational state-specific 9D dissociation probabilities are obtained by site-averaging the site-specific seven-dimensional results based on an accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface newly developed by neural network fitting to density functional theory energy points with the revised version of the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof functional. The mode specificity of H2O/Ni(100) is very different from that of H2O/Ni(111) or H2O/Cu(111) whose reactivity enhancement by vibrational excitations is quite efficient. For H2O/Ni(100), it is found that the excitation in the symmetric stretching mode is more efficacious than increasing the translational energy in promoting the reaction, while the excitations in the asymmetric stretching mode and bending mode are less efficacious than the translational energy at low collision energies. These interesting observations can be attributed to the near central-barrier reaction for H2O/Ni(100), as well as large discrepancies between the site-specific mode specificities at different impact sites. The mode-specific dynamics obtained in this study is different from that obtained with the reaction path Hamiltonian approach, indicating the importance of full-dimensional quantum dynamics for gas–surface reactions.

Abstract:Dissociative chemisorption of polyatomic molecules on metal surfaces involves high-dimensional dynamics, of which quantum mechanical treatments are computationally challenging. A promising reduced-dimensional approach approximates the full-dimensional dynamics by a weighted average of fixed-site results. To examine the performance of this site-averaging model, we investigate two distinct reactions, namely, hydrogen dissociation on Co(0001) and Ag(111), using accurate first principles potential energy surfaces (PESs). The former has a very low barrier of ∼0.05 eV while the latter is highly activated with a barrier of ∼1.15 eV. These two systems allow the investigation of not only site-specific dynamical behaviors but also the validity of the site-averaging model. It is found that the reactivity is not only controlled by the barrier height but also by the topography of the PES. Moreover, the agreement between the site-averaged and full-dimensional results is much better on Ag(111), though quantitative in neither system. Further quasi-classical trajectory calculations showed that the deviations can be attributed to dynamical steering effects, which are present in both reactions at all energies.

Abstract:Dissociative chemisorption is the initial and often rate-limiting step in many heterogeneous processes. As a result, an in-depth understanding of the reaction dynamics of such processes is of great importance for the establishment of a predictive model of heterogeneous catalysis. Overwhelming experimental evidence has suggested that these processes have a non-statistical nature and excitations in various reactant modes have a significant impact on reactivity. A comprehensive characterization of the reaction dynamics requires a quantum mechanical treatment on a global potential energy surface. In this review, we summarize recent progress in constructing high-dimensional potential energy surfaces for polyatomic molecules interacting with transition metal surfaces based on the plane-wave density functional theory and in quantum dynamical studies of dissociative chemisorption on these potential energy surfaces. A special focus is placed on the mode specificity and bond selectivity in these gas-surface collisional processes, and their rationalization in terms of the recently proposed Sudden Vector Projection model.

Abstract:Much progress has been achieved for both experimental and theoretical studies on the dissociative chemisorption of molecules on surfaces. Quantum state-resolved experimental data has provided unprecedented details for these fundamental steps in heterogeneous catalysis, while the quantitative dynamics is still not fully understood in theory. An in-depth understanding of experimental observations relies on accurate dynamical calculations, in which the potential energy surface and adequate quantum mechanical implementation are desired. This article summarizes the current methodologies on the construction of potential energy surfaces and the quantum mechanical treatments, some of which are promising for future applications. The challenges in this field are also addressed.

Abstract:Interactions of atomic and molecular hydrogen with perfect and deficient Cu2O(1 1 1) surfaces have been investigated by density functional theory. Different kinds of possible modes of H and H-2 adsorbed on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface and possible dissociation pathways were examined. The calculated results indicate that O-SUF, Cu-CUS and O-vacancy sites are the adsorption active centers for H adsorbed on the Cu2O(111) surface, and for H-2 adsorption over perfect surface, CuCUS site is the most advantageous position with the side-on type of H-2. For H-2 adsorption over deficient surface, two adsorption models of H-2, H-2 adsorbing perpendicularly over O-vacancy site and H-2 lying flatly over singly-coordinate Cu-Cu short bridge, are typical of non-energy-barrier dissociative adsorption leading to one atomic H completely inserted into the crystal lattice and the other bounded to CuCUS atom, suggesting that the dissociative adsorption of H-2 is the main dissociation pathway of H-2 on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface. Our calculation result is consistent with that of the experimental observation. Therefore, Cu2O(1 1 1) surface with oxygen vacancy exhibits a strong chemical reactivity towards the dissociation of H-2. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work high-dimensional (21D) quantum dynamics calculations on mode-specific surface scattering of a carbon monoxide molecule on a copper (100) surface with lattice effects of a five-atom surface cell are performed through the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) method. We employ a surface model in which five surface atoms near the impact site are treated as fully flexible quantum particles while all other more distant atoms are kept at fixed locations. To efficiently perform the 21D ML-MCTDH wavepacket propagation, the potential energy surface is transferred to canonical polyadic decomposition form with the aid of a Monte Carlo based method. Excitation-specific sticking probabilities of CO on Cu(100) are computed and lattice effects caused by the flexible surface atoms are demonstrated by comparison with sticking probabilities computed for a rigid surface. The dependence of the sticking probability of the initial state of the system is studied, and it is found that the sticking probability is reduced, when the surface atom on the impact site is initially vibrationally excited.
Activated Dissociation of H2 on Cu(001): The Role of Quantum Tunneling

Abstract:The activation and dissociation of H2 molecules on Cu(001) surface is studied theoretically. The activation barrier for the dissociation of H2 on Cu(001) is determined by first-principles calculations to be ~ 0.59 eV in height. Electron transfer from the substrate Cu to H2 plays a key role in the activation, breaking of the H-H bond and the formation of the Cu-H bonds. At around the critical height of bond breaking, two stationary states are identified, which correspond respectively to the molecular and dissociative state. Using the transfer matrix method, we are able to study the role of quantum tunneling in the dissociation process along the minimum energy pathway (MEP), which is found to be significant at room temperature and below. At given temperatures, the tunneling contributions from the translational and vibrational motions of H2 are quantified for the dissociation process. Within a wide range of temperatures, the effects of quantum tunneling on the effective barriers of dissociation and the rate constants are revealed. The deduced energetic parameters associated with thermal equilibrium and non-equilibrium (molecular beam) conditions are comparable with experimental data. In the low-temperature region, crossover from classical to quantum regime is identified.

Abstract:The dissociative adsorption of H2S on perfect and S-covered Mo(110) surfaces have been studied using density functional theory. Adsorption mechanisms of H2S, SH, S and H on both surfaces were analyzed and all possible potential energy profiles of H2S dissociation processes were mapped out. It indicated that H2S, SH, S, and H energetically favor the short bridge, long bridge, hollow, and hollow sites, respectively, on perfect surface, and favor the top, long bridge, hollow, and hollow sites, respectively, on S-covered surface. The first H2S dehydrogenation on clean surface has a barrier of 0.18-0.31 eV, while it required a high energy barrier of 0.40-0.88 eV on S-covered surface. The second dehydrogenation showed a lower barrier of 85 meV on perfect surface, but a higher barrier of 0.29 eV on S-covered surface. All these findings indicated that H2S can easily decompose on perfect Mo(110) surface, but the presence of atomic sulfur went against the H-S bond-breaking process both thermodynamically and kinetically. Finally, densities of electronics states and vibrational frequencies have been used to characterize the interactions between adsorbed species and the substrate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The interaction mechanism of H2S with different Cu2O(1 1 1) surfaces, including perfect, oxygen-vacancy and sulfur-containing surfaces, have been systematically studied using periodic density functional calculations. Different kinds of possible modes of H2S, as well as the resultant SH and S species adsorbed on these surfaces are identified. Two types of pathways via molecular and dissociative adsorption processes are mapped out. Our results show that sulfur species (H2S, SH and S) interact with surface Cu centers; H2S exists in the form of molecular adsorption on perfect and sulfur-containing surfaces; the dissociative adsorption of H2S occurs predominantly on oxygen-vacancy surface, suggesting that oxygen-vacancy exhibits a strong catalytic activity toward the dissociation of H2S. On the other hand, the dissociation processes of the molecular and dissociative adsorption H2S, leading to final product S species on these Cu2O(1 1 1) surfaces, show that the overall dissociation process is exothermic. Meanwhile, with respect to molecular adsorption H2S, the activation barrier and reaction energy of the overall dissociation process on perfect and oxygen-vacancy surfaces indicate that H2S can easily dissociate into S species. Importantly, in the case of dissociative adsorption of H2S, the dissociation of H2S into S species is a spontaneous process with respect to molecular adsorption H2S. However, on sulfur-containing surface, the presence of surface S atom goes against the H-S bond-breaking process both thermodynamically and kinetically. Finally, the vibrational frequencies for the adsorbed H2S, SH and S species on these surfaces have been obtained, which can be applied to guide surface vibrational spectroscopy in experiment. Abstract:The mode specific dissociative chemisorption dynamics of ammonia on the Ru(0001) surface is investigated using a quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method on a new global potential energy surface (PES) with twelve dimensions. The PES is constructed by fitting 92524 density functional theory points using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method, which rigorously enforces the permutation symmetry of the three hydrogen atoms as well as the surface periodicity. The PES enables highly efficient QCT simulations as well as future quantum dynamical studies of the scattering/dissociation dynamics. The QCT calculations yield satisfactory agreement with experiment and suggest strong mode specificity, in general agreement with the predictions of the Sudden Vector Projection model.

Influence of Aggregation, Defects, and Contaminant Oxygen on Water Dissociation at Cu(110) Surface: a Theoretical Study.

Abstract:The DFT-PW91 slab model approach is employed to investigate the influence of aggregation, surface defects, and contaminant oxygen on water dissociation on Cu(110) at low temperatures. The dissociation barriers of water in various aggregate states are calculated in the range of 60-75 kJ/mol on the clean surfaces, in nice agreement with the experimentally determined values. It is revealed that the aggregation of water shows no propensity to reduce the activation barrier for the O-H bond breaking on Cu(110), at variance with the water chemistry on Ru(0001). The calculated activation energy on Cu(211) which is the most active stepped surface investigated is equal to the value on the (110) surface, indicating that the hydroxyl groups observed on Cu(110) at low temperatures may not stem from surface defects. The coadsorbed oxygen, whether as a "spectator" or a "participant," facilitates the water dissociation both kinetically and thermodynamically.

Abstract:In this work the total energy calculations on the atomic geometry and chemisorption properties of Co(0001)/H surface are performed by using the density-functional theory in the approach of the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method. For a clean Co(0001) surface the atomic relaxations of the top three Co(0001) layers are obtained. The adsorptions of atomic Hydrogen have been investigated in the surface periodicities of p(1×1), p(1×2), p(2×2), and (√3 ×√3)R30° combined with hcp hollow and fcc hollow sites. For the cases studied in this work, the atomic hydrogen occupies fcc hollow site preferably drawn from the total energies. In these surface structures the perpendicular distances between the adsorbate and the first layer of substrate (DH-Co) range from 0.93 Å to 0.99 Å. The calculations on the surface vibrational modes proved the frequencies of atomic hydrogen along substrate surface displayed strong dependence on the adsorption geometries. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
