Abstract:The interaction of hydrogen with many transition metal surfaces is characterized by a coexistence of activated with non-activated paths to adsorption with a broad distribution of barrier heights. By performing six-dimensional quantum dynamical and classical molecular dynamics calculations using the same potential energy surface derived from ``ab initio'' calculations for the system H_2/Pd(100) we show that these features of the potential energy surface lead to strong steering effects in the dissociative adsorption dynamics. The adsorption dynamics shows only a small isotope effect which is purely due to the quantum nature of hydrogen.

Abstract:Adsorption and dehydrogenation of formic acid, hydrazine and isopropanol have been investigated using periodic density functional theory (DFT). All the intermediates and transition states have been optimized and the preferred reaction pathways have been found. The adsorption energies for the most stable mode of formic acid, hydrazine and isopropanol are 38.6 kJ/mol, 63.9 kJ/mol and 46.1 kJ/mol, respectively. The dehydrogenation mechanisms of formic acid, hydrazine and isopropanol on Pd(111) surface are proposed and calculated. According to the calculation results, dehydrogenation of formate is more favorable than those of other molecules/groups, and that can be an explanation for the high reactivity of formats in Pd catalyzed transfer hydrogenation.
Solving Optimal Power Flow Using Modified Bacterial Foraging Algorithm Considering FACTS Devices

Abstract:In this paper, a new Modified Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (MBFA) method is developed to incorporate FACTS devices in optimal power flow (OPF) problem. This method can provide an enhanced economic solution with the use of controllable FACTS devices. Two types of FACTS devices, thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSC) and Static VAR Compensator (SVC) are considered in this method. The basic bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) is an evolutionary optimization technique inspired by the foraging behavior of the E. coli bacteria. The strategy of the OPF problem is decomposed in two sub-problems, the first sub-problem related to active power planning to minimize the fuel cost function, and the second sub-problem designed to make corrections to the voltage deviation and reactive power violation based in an efficient reactive power planning of multi Static VAR Compensator (SVC). The specified power flow control constraints due to the use of FACTS devices are included in the OPF problem. The proposed method decomposes the solution of such modified OPF problem into two sub problems’ iteration. The first sub problem is a power flow control problem and the second sub problem is a modified Bacterial foraging algorithm (MBFA) OPF problem. The two sub problems are solved iteratively until convergence. Case studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Six-dimensional Quantum Dynamics of Dissociative Chemisorption of H2 on Co(0001) on an Accurate Global Potential Energy Surface.

Abstract:Cobalt is a widely used catalyst for many heterogeneous reactions, including the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, which converts syngas (H2 and CO) to higher hydrocarbons. As a result, a better understanding of the key chemical steps on the Co surface, such as the dissociative chemisorption of H2 as an initial step of the FT process, is of fundamental importance. Here, we report an accurate full-dimensional global potential energy surface for the dissociative chemisorption of H2 on the rigid Co(0001) surface constructed from more than 3000 density functional theory points. The high-fidelity potential energy surface was obtained using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method, which preserves both the permutation symmetry of H2 and translational symmetry of the Co(0001) surface. The reaction path features a very low barrier on the top site. Full-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations provide insights into the dissociation dynamics and influence of the initial vibrational, rotational, and orientational degrees of freedom.
Multistep Reactions of Water with Small Pd-N Clusters: A First Principles Study

Abstract:Multistep dissociative chemisorption reactions of water with Pd 4 and Pd 7 clusters were studied using density functional theory. The adsorption energies and referred adsorption sites from water molecule ( H 2 O ) to partially dissociative ( H 2+ O and OH + H ), then to fully dissociative ( O + H + H ) configurations are carefully determined. It is found that the adsorption energies of three dissociative reactions are 5–6 times larger than that of water molecule. Atop sites of Pd 4 and Pd 7 clusters are found to be the most stable sites for the adsorbed H 2 O molecule. For the coadsorption cases of partially and fully dissociated products, H 2 and OH molecules preferably tend to bind at the low coordination (atop or bridge) sites, and O and H atoms prefer to adsorb on the high coordination (hollow) sites. It is also found that the most favorable adsorption sites for the molecular adsorbates ( H 2 O , H 2 and OH ) are adjacent to the Pd atoms with the largest site-specific polarizabilities. Therefore, site-specific polarizability is a good predictor of the favorable adsorption sites for the weakly bound molecules. The different directions of charge transfer between the Pd clusters and the adsorbate(s) is observed. Furthermore, the processes of the adsorption, dissociation, and the dissociative products diffusion of H 2 O are analyzed.
Ab initio calculation of the potential energy surface for the dissociation of H_2 on the sulfur covered Pd(100) surface

Abstract:The presence of sulfur atoms on the Pd(100) surface is known to hinder the dissociative adsorption of hydrogen. Using density-functional theory and the full-potential linear augmented plane-wave method, we investigate the potential energy surface (PES) of the dissociative adsorption of H_2 on the sulfur covered Pd(100) surface. The PES is changed significantly compared to the dissociation on the clean Pd(100) surface, in particular for hydrogen close to the S atoms. While the hydrogen dissociation at the clean Pd(100) surface is non-activated, for the (2x2) sulfur adlayer (coverage Theta_S= 0.25) the dissociation of H_2 is inhibited by energy barriers. Their heights strongly depend on the distance between the hydrogen and sulfur atoms leading to a highly corrugated PES. The largest barriers are in the vicinity of the sulfur atoms due to the strong repulsion between sulfur and hydrogen. Still the hydrogen dissociation on the (2x2) sulfur covered Pd(100) surface is exothermic. Thus the poisoning effect of sulfur adatoms for H_2 dissociation at low sulfur coverage (Theta_S <= 0.25) is mainly governed by the formation of energy barriers, not by blocking of the adsorption sites. For the c(2x2) sulfur adlayer (Theta_S= 0.5), the PES for hydrogen dissociation is purely repulsive. This is due to the fact that for all different possible adsorption geometries the hydrogen molecules come too close to the sulfur adatoms before the dissociation is completed.

Abstract:To understand the influence of reactant internal excitation and orientation on the dissociative chemisorption of water on Cu(111), a quasi-seven-dimensional quantum dynamics study has been carried out on a refined potential energy surface (PES). The new PES was modified in the asymptotic region to allow an accurate characterization of the H(2)O ro-vibrational levels. The mode selectivity of the reaction was reexamined on the new PES and found to be consistent with our earlier work. To rationalize the observed mode selectivity, a vibrationally adiabatic reaction path model was determined on this PES. Furthermore, the reactivity for various rotationally excited H(2)O was investigated. It is shown that even low rotational excitation in H(2)O can either enhance or inhibit the reaction and the reactivity depends on the orientation of the impinging molecule.
Site-Specific Dissociation Dynamics of H-2/D-2 on Ag(111) and Co(0001) and the Validity of the Site-Averaging Model

Abstract:Dissociative chemisorption of polyatomic molecules on metal surfaces involves high-dimensional dynamics, of which quantum mechanical treatments are computationally challenging. A promising reduced-dimensional approach approximates the full-dimensional dynamics by a weighted average of fixed-site results. To examine the performance of this site-averaging model, we investigate two distinct reactions, namely, hydrogen dissociation on Co(0001) and Ag(111), using accurate first principles potential energy surfaces (PESs). The former has a very low barrier of ∼0.05 eV while the latter is highly activated with a barrier of ∼1.15 eV. These two systems allow the investigation of not only site-specific dynamical behaviors but also the validity of the site-averaging model. It is found that the reactivity is not only controlled by the barrier height but also by the topography of the PES. Moreover, the agreement between the site-averaged and full-dimensional results is much better on Ag(111), though quantitative in neither system. Further quasi-classical trajectory calculations showed that the deviations can be attributed to dynamical steering effects, which are present in both reactions at all energies.

Abstract:The dissociative adsorption of H2S on perfect and S-covered Mo(110) surfaces have been studied using density functional theory. Adsorption mechanisms of H2S, SH, S and H on both surfaces were analyzed and all possible potential energy profiles of H2S dissociation processes were mapped out. It indicated that H2S, SH, S, and H energetically favor the short bridge, long bridge, hollow, and hollow sites, respectively, on perfect surface, and favor the top, long bridge, hollow, and hollow sites, respectively, on S-covered surface. The first H2S dehydrogenation on clean surface has a barrier of 0.18-0.31 eV, while it required a high energy barrier of 0.40-0.88 eV on S-covered surface. The second dehydrogenation showed a lower barrier of 85 meV on perfect surface, but a higher barrier of 0.29 eV on S-covered surface. All these findings indicated that H2S can easily decompose on perfect Mo(110) surface, but the presence of atomic sulfur went against the H-S bond-breaking process both thermodynamically and kinetically. Finally, densities of electronics states and vibrational frequencies have been used to characterize the interactions between adsorbed species and the substrate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this work the total energy calculations on the atomic geometry and chemisorption properties of Co(0001)/H surface are performed by using the density-functional theory in the approach of the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method. For a clean Co(0001) surface the atomic relaxations of the top three Co(0001) layers are obtained. The adsorptions of atomic Hydrogen have been investigated in the surface periodicities of p(1×1), p(1×2), p(2×2), and (√3 ×√3)R30° combined with hcp hollow and fcc hollow sites. For the cases studied in this work, the atomic hydrogen occupies fcc hollow site preferably drawn from the total energies. In these surface structures the perpendicular distances between the adsorbate and the first layer of substrate (DH-Co) range from 0.93 Å to 0.99 Å. The calculations on the surface vibrational modes proved the frequencies of atomic hydrogen along substrate surface displayed strong dependence on the adsorption geometries. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
Interaction of H2S with Perfect and O-covered Pd(100) Surface: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we investigated the dissociative mechanism of H2S adsorption and its dissociation on both clean and oxygen covered Pd (100) surface. For adsorption mechanism, the site preference was considered for H2S and HS monomers on both surfaces. The results suggest that H2S is energetically adsorbed on high symmetry sites, particularly the hollow site, on clean surface and top site on O-covered Pd (100) surface. Chemisorption of HS is stronger than H2S at the favorable hollow site on clean surface and O-covered surface. The energy barriers for S-H bond-breaking during the first H2S dehydrogenation are 0.35, 0.07, 0.32, and 0.16 eV, while for second dehydrogenation are 0.32 and 0.30 eV, respectively. On the oxygen-covered surface, the H2S adsorption site transitions from bridge to the top site and their energy barrier for first-order decomposition is 0.05 eV, significantly lesser than that observed on a clean surface. To examine more, the electronic densities of states as well as d-band center model were used to characterize the interaction of adsorbed H2S with the surfaces. Overall, our findings show that H2S decomposition on these surfaces is exothermic and relatively easy, but the presence of surface oxygen hinders the breaking process of H-S bond due to kinetic and thermodynamic factors.
First-Principles Calculations of Adsorption and Dehydrogenation of Trans-2-Butene Molecule on Pd(110) Surface

Abstract:Adsorption and dehydrogenation processes of trans-2-butene molecule on the Pd(110) surface have been studied by density functional theory calculations. Different adsorption configurations of the reactant, the dehydrogenated product, and the most favorable reaction pathway have been determined. The calculated energy barrier agrees well with the value deduced from experiments. It is found that the reactant molecule must undergo a rotation before the C-H bond cleavage, and surface Pd atoms are involved in the dehydrogenation reaction through the formation of the Pd-C-H three-membered metallacycle. Our calculations have not only provided reliable interpretation for various experimental observations but also shed more light on the dynamics of the reaction processes.

Abstract:Liquid hydrogen storage equipment is insulated using high-vacuum multi-layer insulation. This insulation is manufactured from materials that emit hydrogen gas, which degrades the insulating properties. Palladium oxide is widely used in liquid hydrogen storage as an effective hydrogen absorber. This study investigates the adsorption principle of H 2 molecules on the surface of PdO(101) crystals. The mechanism of hydrogen adsorption on the PdO(101) surface was investigated by analyzing the adsorption energy, stable adsorption configuration, and electronic structure of the H 2 /PdO(101) system. The dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on the PdO (101) surface has been investigated using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is determined that greater than 90% of the hydrogen dissociation occurs at temperatures below -100K. The dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on the PdO(101) surface was found to occur at temperatures below -100K. The majority of the dissociated hydrogen reacts and produces water on the surface during TPD, which desorbs above -300K. The results indicate that Pd cus is the most stable adsorption site for H 2 on the PdO(101) surface, with an adsorption energy of -0.56 eV, resulting in weak chemisorption. Once the activation energy is reached, H 2 and Pd cus form a stable structure. The movement of H atoms between Pd cus sites generates a negative heat of reaction. The adsorption energy of H atoms at the O cus site (-3.26 eV) is higher than that at the Pd cus site (-3.21 eV). Hydroxylated PdO(101) promotes water production. The combination of H atoms and hydroxides to produce water overcomes the potential barrier of 0.69 eV, resulting in the production of Pd and H 2 O.
Six-dimensional quantum dynamics of an Eley–Rideal reaction between gaseous and adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Cu(111)

Abstract:In the form of direct abstraction of a surface adsorbate by a gaseous projectile, the Eley–Rideal (ER) reaction at the gas–surface interface manifests interesting dynamics. Unfortunately, high-dimensional quantum dynamical (QD) studies for ER reactions remain very challenging, which demands a large configuration space and the coordinate transformation of wavefunctions. Here, we report the first six-dimensional (6D) fully coupled quantum scattering method for studying the ER reaction between gas phase H(D) atoms and adsorbed D(H) atoms on a rigid Cu(111) surface. Reaction probabilities and product rovibrational state distributions obtained by this 6D model are found to be quite different from those obtained by reduced-dimensional QD models, demonstrating the high-dimensional nature of the ER reaction. Using two distinct potential energy surfaces (PESs), we further discuss the influence of the PES on the calculated product vibrational and rotational state distributions, in comparison with experimental results. The lateral corrugation and the exothermicity of the PES are found to play a critical role in controlling the energy disposal in the ER reaction.

Abstract:Density-functional theory calculations had been used to investigate the adsorption and dissociation of H2S on Mo(1 0 0) surface. Adsorption mechanisms of H2S, HS, S and H on the Mo(1 0 0) surface were analyzed. H2S was found to be adsorbed at bridge, hollow and top sites with adsorption energies of -1.25, -1.03 and -0.92 eV, respectively. HS was strongly chemically absorbed at hollow, bridge and top sites with adsorption energies of -4.51, -4.08 and -3.45 eV, respectively, and sulfur and hydrogen preferred to be absorbed at hollow and bridge sites, respectively. In addition, potential energy profiles of H2S dissociation on Mo(1 0 0) had been constructed by a climbing image nudged elastic band method. Four possible dissociation pathways of the first H2S dehydrogenation were examined with reaction barriers of 0.28, 0.37, 0.075, and 0.21 eV, respectively, while the energy barrier to break the S-H bond of HS with or without hydrogen co-adsorption was almost the same low. This work showed that the decomposition of H2S on the molybdenum surface was kinetically and thermodynamically facile. Abstract:To provide information about the chemistry of water on Pd surfaces, we performed density functional slab model studies on water adsorption and decomposition at Pd(111) surface. We located transition states of a series of elementary steps and calculated activation energies and rate constants with and without quantum tunneling effect included. Water was found to weakly bind to the Pd surface. Co-adsorbed species OH and O that are derivable from H2O stabilize the adsorbed water molecules via formation of hydrogen bonds. On the clean surface, the favorable sites are top and bridge for H2O and OH, respectively. Calculated kinetic parameters indicate that dehydrogenation of water is unlikely on the clean regular Pd(111) surface. The barrier for the hydrogen abstraction of H2O at the OH covered surface is approximately 0.2–0.3eV higher than the value at the clean surface. Similar trend is computed for the hydroxyl group dissociation at H2O or O covered surfaces. In contrast, the O–H bond breaking of water on oxygen covered Pd surfaces, H2Oad+Oad→2OHad, is predicted to be likely with a barrier of ∼0.3eV. The reverse reaction, 2OHad→H2Oad+Oad, is also found to be very feasible with a barrier of ∼0.1eV. These results show that on oxygen-covered surfaces production of hydroxyl species is highly likely, supporting previous experimental findings.

Abstract:Owing to the development of efficient algorithms and the improvement of computer power it is now possible to map out potential energy surfaces (PESs) of reactions at surfaces in great detail. This achievement has been accompanied by an increased effort in the dynamical simulation of processes on surfaces. The paradigm for simple reactions at surfaces — the dissociation of hydrogen on metal surfaces — can now be treated fully quantum dynamically in the molecular degrees of freedom from first principles, i.e., without invoking any adjustable parameters. This relatively new field of ab initio dynamics simulations of reactions at surfaces will be reviewed. Mainly the dissociation of hydrogen on clean and adsorbate covered metal surfaces and on semiconductor surfaces will be discussed. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics treatment of reactions of hydrogen atoms with hydrogen-passivated semiconductor surfaces and recent achievements in the ab initio description of laser-induced desorption and further developments will be addressed.

An Accurate Full-Dimensional H4O Potential Energy Surface and Dynamics of an Exchange Reaction.

Abstract:H2O and H-2 are ubiquitous in the universe and their collisions play a crucial role in astrophysical processes. The reaction between the two also provides a prototype for understanding dynamics through four-center transition states. In this work, we adopted a strategy of combing two ab initio methods, CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ and MRCI-F12 + Q(rot)/AVTZ, to provide a balanced description for all regions of the configuration space, including one hydrogen exchange channel and two dissociation channels, namely H-2 + H2O, H + H + H2O, and H + OH + H-2. About 40 500 points were sampled to cover all dynamically relevant space, and the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network (PIP-NN) method was employed to develop a high-precision full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES), with a total fitting error of 0.055 kcal mol(-1). Using a quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method, the reaction dynamics and mode specificity of the hydrogen exchange channel were studied on the PES. It has been found that the stretching mode of H-2, the bending, the symmetric stretching, the asymmetric stretching mode of H2O, and the translational mode can all promote reactivity. The strongest promotion effect comes from the H-H stretching mode. The Sudden Vector Projection (SVP) model was applied to predict mode specificity effects and rationalize the product energy partitioning. In both cases, the QCT and SVP results are generally consistent with each other. Furthermore, the hydrogen exchange channel was found to be dominated by sideways scattering.

Abstract:We present results of quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations of the molecular and dissociative sticking probability of CO on Cu(110), and of <span class="InlineEquation">$\text {CH}_4$</span> on Pt(110)-(2 × 1) respectively. Our QCT calculations make use of reactive force fields (RFF) specifically developed for the systems/processes of interest by fitting of a large set of Density Functional Theory (DFT) total energy data. Through these two selected examples of great importance for a deep understanding of relevant chemical reactions on metal surfaces, we illustrate the potentiality of QCT calculations based on accurate RFFs built on ab initio data.
