The reaction path features deep chemisorption wells and a late barrier for dissociation, agreeing well with previous calculations. The activation energy for dissociation ranges from 0.1 eV at the hollow site to 2.46 eV on the top site, indicating a highly corrugated PES. Effects of the incidence energy of the impinging molecule, its initial orientation, vibrational and rotational excitations, and site specificity are examined. Despite the presence of a low barrier, the initial dissociation probability is very small, even at high incident energies, as a large percentage of trajectories is either trapped or desorbed back to the gas phase. The low reactivity is attributed to inefficient energy transfer into the dissociation reaction coordinate in the chemisorption well where thermal equilibrium is not reached. This system underscores the importance of dynamics in understanding reactions at gas–surface interfaces and in kinetic modeling of catalytic processes.

Six-dimensional Quantum Dynamics of Dissociative Chemisorption of H2 on Co(0001) on an Accurate Global Potential Energy Surface.

Abstract:Cobalt is a widely used catalyst for many heterogeneous reactions, including the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, which converts syngas (H2 and CO) to higher hydrocarbons. As a result, a better understanding of the key chemical steps on the Co surface, such as the dissociative chemisorption of H2 as an initial step of the FT process, is of fundamental importance. Here, we report an accurate full-dimensional global potential energy surface for the dissociative chemisorption of H2 on the rigid Co(0001) surface constructed from more than 3000 density functional theory points. The high-fidelity potential energy surface was obtained using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method, which preserves both the permutation symmetry of H2 and translational symmetry of the Co(0001) surface. The reaction path features a very low barrier on the top site. Full-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations provide insights into the dissociation dynamics and influence of the initial vibrational, rotational, and orientational degrees of freedom.

Abstract:A resonant system consisting of an excess electron and a closed-shell atom or molecule, as a temporary negative ion, is usually in doublet-spin states that are analogous to bright states of photoexcitation of the neutral. However, anionic higher-spin states, noted as dark states, are scarcely accessed. Here, we report the dissociation dynamics of CO− in dark quartet resonant states that are formed by electron attachments to electronically excited CO (a3Π). Among the dissociations to O−(2P) + C(3P), O−(2P) + C(1D), and O−(2P) + C(1S), the latter two are spin-forbidden in the quartet-spin resonant states of CO−, while the first process is preferred in 4Σ− and 4Π states. The present finding sheds new light on anionic dark states.

Abstract:In this work, we have studied the dissociation dynamics of CO2 on a Cu(110) surface using molecular beams with incidence energies ranging from 0.28 eV to 4.6 eV. The incident energy dependence of the initial dissociative reaction probabilities (S0) of CO2 showed two distinct characteristics. S0 exhibits a rapid increase from 1.18 × 10−4 at 0.28 eV to over 200-fold at 2 eV. Beyond this, only a small increase by a factor of 2 was observed in the 2 eV to 4.6 eV range, with S0 being only 4.1 × 10−2 at 4.6 eV. Incident angle-dependent measurements reveal total energy scaling to be followed. Measurements using a heated nozzle showed no observable enhancement in S0 due to the vibrational energy of the incident molecules, with an upper limit of vibrational efficacy estimated to be 0.25. Furthermore, an increase in O-atom saturation coverage (resulting from CO2 dissociation) from 0.5 ML to 0.66 ML was observed at high impact energies (> 3 eV), suggesting that newer dissociation sites become accessible at higher energies.

Abstract:The final CO2 formation step in the decomposition of deuterated formic acid (DCOOH) on Pt surfaces is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) trajectories starting at the relevant transition states. The comparison of our AIMD simulations with the recent experimentally measured translational energy and angular distributions of the desorbed CO2 led us to the conclusion that the decomposition is dominated by the DCOO* intermediate, and the observed thermal and hyperthermal channels of the desorbed CO2 can be attributed to the reaction at terrace and step sites, respectively. The alternative HOOC* pathway is ruled out based on the poor agreement with the experimental distributions and other evidence. Furthermore, the CO2 product was found to have significant vibrational excitations, consistent with previous observations of chemiluminescence of CO2 produced by decomposition of formic acid. These product state distributions are rationalized by the sudden vector projection model.

Abstract:We report extensive quasi-classical trajectory calculations of the HO + CO -> H + CO, reaction on a newly developed potential energy surface based on a large number of UCCSD(T)-F12/AVTZ calculations. This complex forming reaction is known for its unusual kinetics and dynamics because of its unique potential energy surface, which is dominated by the HOCO wells flanked by an entrance channel bottleneck and a transition state leading to the H + CO2 products. It was found that the thermal rate coefficients are in reasonably good agreement with known experimental data in both low and high pressure limits. Excitation of the OH vibration is shown to enhance reactivity, due apparently to its promoting effect over the transition state between the HOCO intermediate and the H + CO2 product. On the other hand, neither CO vibrational excitation nor rotational excitation in either CO or OH has a significant effect on reactivity, in agreement with experiment. However, significant discrepancies have been found between theory and the available molecular beam experiments. For example, the calculated translational energy distribution of the products substantially underestimates the experiment. In addition, the forward bias in the differential cross section observed in the experiment was not reproduced theoretically. While the origin of the discrepancies is still not clear, it is argued that a quantum mechanical treatment of the dynamics might be needed.

Abstract:In this work, we revisit the dynamics of carbon monoxide molecular chemisorption on Cu(110) by using quasi-classical trajectory calculations. The molecule-surface interaction is described through an atomistic neural network approach based on Density Functional Theory calculations using a nonlocal exchange-correlation (XC) functional that includes the effect of long-range dispersion forces: vdW-DF2 [Lee et al. Phys. Rev. B, 82, 081101 (2010)]. With this approach, we significantly improve the agreement with experiments with respect to a similar previous study based on a semi-local XC functional. In particular, we obtain excellent agreement with molecular beam experimental data concerning the dependence of the initial sticking probability on surface temperature and impact energy at normal incidence. For off-normal incidence, our results also reproduce two trends observed experimentally: (i) the preferential sticking for molecules impinging parallel to the [1̄10] direction compared to [001] and (ii) the change from positive to negative scaling as the impact energy increases. Nevertheless, understanding the origin of some remaining quantitative discrepancies with experiments requires further investigations.

The curious case of CO$_2$ dissociation on Cu(110)

Abstract:Dissociation of CO$_2$ on copper surfaces, a model system for understanding the elementary steps in catalytic conversion of CO$_2$ to methanol has been extensively studied in the past. It is thought to be reasonably well-understood from both experiments and theory. In contrast, our findings reported here suggest a different picture. Using molecular beam surface scattering methods, we measure the initial dissociation probabilities ($S_{\rm 0}$) of CO$_2$ on a flat, clean Cu(110) surface under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The observed $S_{\rm 0}$ ranges from $3.9\times10^{-4}$ to $1.8\times10^{-2}$ at incidence energies of 0.64 eV to 1.59 eV with a lower limit to dissociation barrier estimated to be around 2.0 eV, much larger than that understood previously. We discuss the possible reasons behind such large differences in our results and previous work. These findings are anticipated to be extremely important for obtaining a correct understanding of elementary steps in CO$_2$ dissociation on Cu surfaces.

Abstract:Efficient CO activation on Rh particles promoted by Mn cocatalysts is important to the activity for the conversion of the syngas (CO and H2) to hydrocarbon and oxygenates. To study the effect of the step edge and promotion of Mn cocatalysts on CO activation, we studied the CO dissociation on Mn-decorated Rh(111) and stepped Rh(553) surfaces using density functional theory calculations. We found that the presence of the step edge and Mn stabilizes the transition state and reaction products: compared to clean Rh(111), calculated barrier for CO dissociation on Mn-decorated Rh(553) is lowered by about 1.60eV, and corresponding reaction energies with respect to CO in gas phase changes from endothermic (0.21eV) to strong exothermic (−1.73eV). The present work indicates that the addition of Mn cocatalysts and decrease of Rh particle sizes improves greatly the activity of CO dissociation.
Quasi-classical Trajectory Study of the H + CO2 → HO + CO Reaction on a New Ab Initio Based Potential Energy Surface.

Abstract:A detailed quasi-classical trajectory study of the H + CO(2) → HO + CO reaction is reported on an accurate potential energy surface based on ab initio data. The influence of the vibrational and rotational excitations of CO(2) was investigated up to the collision energy of 2.35 eV. It was found that the total reaction integral cross section increases monotonically with the collision energy, consistent with experimental results. The excitation of the CO(2) bending vibration enhances the reaction, while the excitation in its asymmetric stretching vibration inhibits the reaction. The calculated thermal rate constants are in excellent agreement with experiment. At the state-to-state level, the rotational state distributions of the HO product are in good agreement with experimental results, while those for the CO product are much hotter than measurements. The calculated differential cross sections are dominated by forward scattering, suggesting that the lifetime of the HOCO intermediate may not be sufficiently long to render the reaction completely statistical.

Abstract:The adsorption and dissociation of CO and CO2 molecules on UO2 (111) slab were investigated by the first-principles calculations based on density functional theory with the addition of Hubbard term for calculation correction. Different static and dynamic adsorption mechanisms under different configurations were analyzed, and the adsorption sites included top, hollow, and bridge sites. In the static calculations, the variation of adsorption parameters, such as adsorption configuration, adsorption energy, and charge transfer, during adsorption process was investigated. ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) was employed to study the dissociation process of CO2 molecules and the changes in charge density difference. Results show that the adsorption of CO molecules can be categorized into two types: (1) stable adsorption, including chemical and physical adsorptions; (2) unstable adsorption. The adsorption types of CO2 on UO2 (111) slab only include the chemical adsorption of stable adsorption and unstable adsorption. No physical adsorption exists. The optimal configuration for the adsorption of both CO and CO2 molecules is short-bridge vertical (B-short-Ver) adsorption. Additionally, at 0 K, the CO2 molecules at the configurations related to B-short-Ver adsorption and long-bridge vertical adsorption on UO2 (111) slab spontaneously dissociate after adsorption. AIMD simulation results show that both configurations dissociate at 300 K.
Theoretical Insights into Structure Sensitivity in Formate Decomposition Dynamics on Cu Surfaces

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the decomposition dynamics of formate (HCO2), which is an important reaction intermediate in many catalytic processes, on three model catalyst surfaces of Cu: Cu(111), Cu(110), and Cu(100). The decomposition proceeds via the conversion of a bidentate adsorption configuration to a less stable monodentate configuration followed by the cleavage of the C–H bond. Classical trajectory calculations on first-principles-based neural network potential energy surfaces were carried out to understand the post-transition state dynamics for HCO2 decomposition. Our results showed that the CO2 product is translationally hot with angular distributions sharply collimated along the surface normal, in agreement with experimental measurements. Furthermore, the CO2 product was found to possess vibrational excitations, mostly in the bending modes. These product state distributions are rationalized by the Sudden Vector Projection model, revealing the key role of the transition state in the product energy disposal of this surface reaction. These dynamical results are compared with available experimental data, shedding light on the structure sensitivity in formate decomposition dynamics.

Abstract:Zirconium oxide cluster cations and anions are produced by laser ablation and reacted with CO in a fast flow reactor. The CO adsorption products Zr(x)O(y)CO(+) are observed for most of the generated cationic clusters (Zr(x)O(y)(+) = Zr(2)O(5,6)(+), Zr(3)O(7,8)(+), Zr(4)O(9,10)(+)...) while only specific anionic systems (Zr(x)O(y)(-) = Zr(3)O(7)(-), Zr(4)O(9)(-)...) absorb CO to produce Zr(x)O(y)CO(-). To study how the CO molecule is adsorbed on the clusters, the Zr(x)O(y)CO(±) products are mass-selected by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) and collided with a crossed helium beam. The fragment ions from collision-induced dissociation (CID) are detected by a secondary TOF-MS. Loss of CO and CO(2) is observed upon the collision of the helium beam with Zr(x)O(y)CO(+) and Zr(x)O(2x+1)CO(-), respectively. Density functional theory calculations indicate that oxidative and nonoxidative adsorption of CO takes place over Zr(3)O(7)(-) and Zr(3)O(7)(+), respectively. This is consistent with the CID experiments.

Abstract:Dissociative adsorption of small organic molecules on electrocatalyst is so important molecular process of surcace, which includes stages of adsorption, chemical bond broken and new adsorbate formation. The dynamic study on this reaction will contribute to reveal the origin of interaction between electrode surface and reactants, and to develop and earlab theories of electrocatalysis. In the present work, in situ FTIR studies demonstrated that the dissociative produces of HCOOH on P-1 electrode are COad species. The oxidation of COad formed from HCOOH dissociative adsorption on Pt(100) electrode was need as probe reaction, and dynamic properties of ibis dissociative adsorption were investigated by a computerised experimental set-up developed recently in our group. From the analysis of current transtients the rate of dissociative adsorption of HCOOH on Pt(100) electrode has been evaluated under specified conditions.

Abstract:Dissociation of CO2 on copper surfaces is an important model system for understanding the elementary steps in catalytic conversion of CO2 to methanol. Using molecular beam-surface scattering methods, we measure the initial dissociation probabilities (S0) of CO2 on a flat, clean Cu(110) surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The observed S0 ranges from 3.9 × 10−4 to 1.8 × 10−2 at incidence energies of 0.64–1.59 eV. Abstract:Dissociative adsorption is one of the most important reactions in catalysis. In this communication we propose a model aiming to generalize the important factors that affect dissociation reactions. Specifically, for a dissociation reaction, say AB -->A + B, the model connects the dissociation barrier with the association barrier, the chemisorption energies of A and B at the final state and the bonding energy of AB in the gas phase. To apply this model, we have calculated CO dissociation on Ru(0001), Rh(111), Pd(111) (4d transition metals), Os(0001), Ir(111), and Pt(111) (5d transition metals) using density function theory (DFT). All the barriers are determined. We find that the DFT results can be rationalized within the model. The model can also be used to explain many experimental observations. Abstract:Dissociative electron attachment to carbon monoxide, e(-) + CO -> C + O-, at 9.5, 10.0, and 10.6 eV is investigated by using the anion velocity time-sliced map imaging technique. The completely backward scattering distributions of the fast O- fragment are observed at 10.0 and 10.6 eV. The single electron-molecule resonance model fails in interpretation to these unusual angular distributions, while a quantum interference model including two (at 10.0 eV) or three (at 10.6 eV) dissociative outgoing waves is consequently proposed and provides the satisfying results about the experimental data fittings. Moreover, coherent interference among the (2)Pi, (2)Delta, and (2)Phi resonant states of CO- at 10.6 eV could be further established, based on the fact that the sum of the phase-shift fitting values equals pi rad.
