Abstract:A detailed quasi-classical trajectory study of the H + CO(2) → HO + CO reaction is reported on an accurate potential energy surface based on ab initio data. The influence of the vibrational and rotational excitations of CO(2) was investigated up to the collision energy of 2.35 eV. It was found that the total reaction integral cross section increases monotonically with the collision energy, consistent with experimental results. The excitation of the CO(2) bending vibration enhances the reaction, while the excitation in its asymmetric stretching vibration inhibits the reaction. The calculated thermal rate constants are in excellent agreement with experiment. At the state-to-state level, the rotational state distributions of the HO product are in good agreement with experimental results, while those for the CO product are much hotter than measurements. The calculated differential cross sections are dominated by forward scattering, suggesting that the lifetime of the HOCO intermediate may not be sufficiently long to render the reaction completely statistical.

Abstract:We report extensive quasi-classical trajectory calculations of the HO + CO -> H + CO, reaction on a newly developed potential energy surface based on a large number of UCCSD(T)-F12/AVTZ calculations. This complex forming reaction is known for its unusual kinetics and dynamics because of its unique potential energy surface, which is dominated by the HOCO wells flanked by an entrance channel bottleneck and a transition state leading to the H + CO2 products. It was found that the thermal rate coefficients are in reasonably good agreement with known experimental data in both low and high pressure limits. Excitation of the OH vibration is shown to enhance reactivity, due apparently to its promoting effect over the transition state between the HOCO intermediate and the H + CO2 product. On the other hand, neither CO vibrational excitation nor rotational excitation in either CO or OH has a significant effect on reactivity, in agreement with experiment. However, significant discrepancies have been found between theory and the available molecular beam experiments. For example, the calculated translational energy distribution of the products substantially underestimates the experiment. In addition, the forward bias in the differential cross section observed in the experiment was not reproduced theoretically. While the origin of the discrepancies is still not clear, it is argued that a quantum mechanical treatment of the dynamics might be needed.

Abstract:Regarding CH3OH+ and CH3OH++, theoretical calculations have used a variety of methods to describe geometric structures and potential energy surfaces. Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theory has been applied to compute the rate constants and product branching ratios of various channels on potential energy surfaces. The dissociate ions produced from CH3OH+ include CH2+, HCOH+ and CH2OH+, whereas H+, H2+, H3+, COH+/HCO+, and CH3O+ fragments are generated from CH3OH++. By roaming, we imply that a neutral hydrogen molecule fragment explores relatively flat regions of the intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations from the minimum energy path.

Abstract:The unimolecular dissociation of HCO ground state was investigated with the time-dependent full-quantum symplectic propagation based on the newest potential energy surface of the system. Calculated energy and widths of HCO resonance states agree well with those in the literature. CO product distribution was systematically investigated. A simple model was presented to interpret the rovibrational distributions in HCO dissociation.

Abstract:First-principles treatments of quantum molecular reaction dynamics have reached the level of quantitative accuracy even in cases with strong non-Born-Oppenheimer effects. This achievement permits the interpretation of puzzling experimental phenomena related to dynamics governed by multiple coupled potential energy surfaces. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the photodissociation of formyl radical (HCO). Oscillations observed in the distribution of product states are found to arise from the interference of matter waves-a manifestation analogous to Young's double-slit experiment.

Abstract:The highly excited vibrational levels of HCO in the electronic ground state, (X) over tilde (1) A', are employed to determine the coefficients of an algebraic Hamiltonian, by which the dynamical potential is derived and shown to be very useful for interpreting the intramolecular vibrational relaxation (IVR) which operates via the HCO bending motion. The IVR inhibits the dissociation of H atom and enhances the stochastic degree of dynamical character. This approach is from a global view point on a series of levels classified by the polyad number which is a constant of motion in a certain dynamical domain. In this way, the seemingly complicated level structure shows very regular picture, dynamically.

The reaction path features deep chemisorption wells and a late barrier for dissociation, agreeing well with previous calculations. The activation energy for dissociation ranges from 0.1 eV at the hollow site to 2.46 eV on the top site, indicating a highly corrugated PES. Effects of the incidence energy of the impinging molecule, its initial orientation, vibrational and rotational excitations, and site specificity are examined. Despite the presence of a low barrier, the initial dissociation probability is very small, even at high incident energies, as a large percentage of trajectories is either trapped or desorbed back to the gas phase. The low reactivity is attributed to inefficient energy transfer into the dissociation reaction coordinate in the chemisorption well where thermal equilibrium is not reached. This system underscores the importance of dynamics in understanding reactions at gas–surface interfaces and in kinetic modeling of catalytic processes.

Abstract:By examining the product-state distribution of a prototypical nonadiabatic predissociation system, HCO((A) over tilde (2)A ''-X(2)A'), we demonstrate that the dissociation dynamics is strongly modulated by parent rotational quantum numbers. The predissociation of the nominal (nu(C-H) = 0,nu(bend), nu(C-O) = 1) vibronic levels of the (A) over tilde 2A '' state surprisingly gives rise to both vibrational ground and excited states of the CO product, despite the assumed spectator nature of the CO moiety. This anomaly is attributed to the dependence of the lifetime of the vibronic resonance facilitated by the Renner-Teller interaction on the parent rotational angular momentum quantum numbers coupled with transient intensity borrowing from nearby vibronic resonances with nu(C-O) = 0. This unique phenomenon is a purely quantum mechanical behavior that has no classical analogue.

Abstract:Quasi-classical trajectory studies have been carried out for the HO + CO → H + CO2 reaction and H + CO2 inelastic collision on a recently developed global potential energy surface based on a large number of high-level ab initio points. The CO2 vibrational state distributions for these processes have been determined using an original normal-mode analysis method. It was found that the CO2 product of the reaction is highly excited in both the Fermi-linked bending and symmetric stretching modes, but little population was found in the antisymmetric stretching mode. The substantial excitation of the CO2 vibration, while consistent with the geometry of the transition state in the exit channel, is in disagreement with available experimental data. For the inelastic collision, the CO2 is much less excited despite much higher total energies. In addition, excitations in all vibrational modes were found, in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract:A detailed quantum mechanical characterization of the photodissociation dynamics of H2O at 121.6 nm is presented. The calculations were performed using a full-dimensional wave packet method on coupled potential energy surfaces of all relevant electronic states. Our state-to-state model permits a detailed analysis of the OH(X̃/Ã) product fine-structure populations as a probe of the non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics. The calculated rotational state distributions of the two Λ-doublet levels of OH(X̃, v = 0) exhibit very different characteristics. The A' states, produced mostly via the B̃→X̃ conical intersection pathway, have significantly higher populations than the A″ counterparts, which are primarily from the B̃→Ã Renner-Teller pathway. The former features a highly inverted and oscillatory rotational state distribution, while the latter has a smooth distribution with much less rotational excitation. In good agreement with experiment, the calculated total OH(X̃) rotational state distribution and anisotropy parameters show clear even-odd oscillations, which can be attributed to a quantum mechanical interference between waves emanating from the HOH and HHO conical intersections in the B̃→X̃ non-adiabatic pathway. On the other hand, the experiment-theory agreement for the OH(Ã) fragment is also satisfactory, although some small quantitative differences suggest remaining imperfections of the ab initio based potential energy surfaces.

Here, a combined experimental and theoretical study of the dissociation dynamics of the tetra-atomic FH2O system is presented, providing snapshots of the F + H2O → HF + OH reaction. Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence measurements of the dissociative photodetachment (DPD) of the F(-)(H2O) anion revealed various dissociation pathways along different electronic states. A distinct photoelectron spectrum of stable FH-OH complexes was also measured and attributed to long-lived Feshbach resonances. Comparison to full-dimensional quantum calculations confirms the sensitivity of the DPD measurements to the subtle dynamics on the low-lying FH2O potential energy surfaces over a wide range of nuclear configurations and energies.

This stimulated us to investigate a dynamic mechanism for its formation using a global potential energy surface for the ground electronic state (S0) of methanol. We show via quasi-classical trajectory calculations that hydroxymethylene is indeed formed under the reasonable assumption that the initially excited state undergoes rapid internal conversion to S0. From the trajectories, fractional yields of the six major product channels are determined as a function of excitation energy, and the rate of production of each is determined from the fractions and rate of methanol disappearance. Roaming is observed in trajectories leading to the OH and CH3 products as well as in those leading to CH2OH + H and non-reactive trajectories. A "frustrated" roaming accounts for roughly 20% of the HCOH production.
OH-Formation Following Vibrationally Induced Reaction Dynamics of H$_2$COO

Abstract:The reaction dynamics of H$_2$COO to form linear HCOOH and dioxirane as first steps for OH-elimination is quantitatively investigated. Using a machine learned potential energy surface at the CASPT2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory vibrational excitation along the CH-normal mode $\nu_{\rm CH}$ with energies up to 40.0 kcal/mol ($\sim 5 \nu_{\rm CH}$) leads almost exclusively to linear HCOOH which further decomposes into OH+HCO. Although the barrier to form dioxirane is only 21.4 kcal/mol the reaction probability to form dioxirane is two orders of magnitude lower if the CH-stretch mode is excited. Following the dioxirane-formation pathway is facile, however, if in addition the COO-bend vibration is excited with energies equivalent to $\sim (2 \nu_{\rm CH} + 4 \nu_{\rm COO})$ or $\sim (3 \nu_{\rm CH} + \nu_{\rm COO})$. For OH-formation in the atmosphere the pathway through linear HCOOH is probably most relevant because the alternative pathways (through dioxirane or formic acid) involve several intermediates that can de-excite through collisions, relax {\it via} Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR), or pass through very loose and vulnerable transition states (formic acid). This work demonstrates how, by selectively exciting particular vibrational modes, it is possible to dial into desired reaction channels with a high degree of specificity for a process relevant to atmospheric chemistry.

Abstract:Dissociative photodetachment of HOCO(-) is investigated with both five- and six-dimensional quantum models on an ab initio based accurate HOCO potential energy surface. Three experimentally observed channels, namely, HOCO, H+CO(2), and HO+CO, are identified in our theoretical simulations. Since the energy spectrum of the initial HOCO species prepared by photodetachment is mostly lower than both the HO+CO asymptote and dissociation barrier to H+CO(2), the production of H+CO(2) is almost exclusively via tunneling. However, the lowest-lying HOCO resonances are extremely long lived (~μs), which might elude experimental measurements through its decay products H+CO(2). Our results are in good agreement with almost all experimental data reported by the Continetti group using a new cryogenically cooled photoelectron-photofragment coincidence apparatus.

Abstract:Full-dimensional quantum dynamics studies of the photodetachment of HCO2- and DCO2- are reported using a wave-packet Method on an accurate global potential energy surface of the neutral HOCO/HCO2 system. The Calculated phothelectron spectra reproduced both the positions and Widths of the main HCO2 and DCO2 peaks observed:in experiment. Specifically, both the (2)A(1) and B-2(2) resonance peaks of the neutral radicals were identified in our simulations thanks to the adiabatic PES that captures both the (2)A(1) and B-2(2) minima. The narrow widths and isotope effect of the lowest resonances are indicative of tunneling-facilitated predissociation. Furthermore, the dissociation product CO2 was found to be excited in both its symmetric stretching and bending modes, which are coupled Via a strong Fermi resonance, but rotationally cold, in good agreement with the recent photoelectron-photodetachment coincidence experiments.

Abstract:Recent studies have found an unusual way of dissociation in formaldehyde. It can be characterized by a hydrogen atom that separates from the molecule, but instead of dissociating immediately it roams around the molecule for a considerable amount of time and extracts another hydrogen atom from the molecule prior to dissociation. This phenomenon has been coined roaming and has since been reported in the dissociation of a number of other molecules. In this paper we investigate roaming in Chesnavich's CH$_4^+$ model. During dissociation the free hydrogen must pass through three phase space bottleneck for the classical motion, that can be shown to exist due to unstable periodic orbits. None of these orbits is associated with saddle points of the potential energy surface and hence related to transition states in the usual sense. We explain how the intricate phase space geometry influences the shape and intersections of invariant manifolds that form separatrices, and establish the impact of these phase space structures on residence times and rotation numbers. Ultimately we use this knowledge to attribute the roaming phenomenon to particular heteroclinic intersections.
