Abstract:The first edition of this book was written as a text and has been used many times in a one-year graduate quantum mechanics course. One of the reviewers has made me aware that the book can also serve as, " . . . in principle, a handbook of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. " In the second edition we have therefore added material to enhance its usefulness as a handbook. But it can still be used as a text if certain chapters and sections are ignored. We have also revised the original presentation, in many places at the suggestion of students or colleagues. As a consequence, the contents of the book now exceed the material that can be covered in a one-year quantum mechanics course on the graduate level. But one can easily select the material for a one-year course omitting-according to one's preference-one or several of the following sets of sections: {1. 7, XXI}, {X, XI} or just {XI}, {II. 7, XIII}, {XIV. 5, XV}, {XIX, XX}. Also the material of Sections 1. 5-1. 8 is not needed to start with the physics in Chapter II. Chapters XI, XIII, XIX, and XX are probably the easiest to dispense with and I was contemplating the deletion of some of them, but each chapter found enthusiastic supporters among the readers who advised against it. Chapter I-augmented with some applications from later chapters-can also be used as a separate introductory text on the mathematics of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

Abstract:Currently, dynamics of a massive macroparticle is given by classical analytical mechanics (CM), while that of a massive micro one is given by quantum mechanics (QM). We propose a mechanics effective for both: We transform, under coordinate transformation, the covariant tensor of order two underlying the kinetic energy term of the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) eq. of CM, not with the action of the diffeomorphism group, but with an action of an extended diffeomorphism group. Then, the H-J eq., a first-order partial differential eq., is modified to a third-order one. The Euler-Lagrange eq. of CM, a second-order ordinary differential eq., related to the H-J eq. through action integral of the least action principle is accordingly modified to a fourth-order one. We thus obtain a mechanics which, because of the higher-order eqs., accommodates phenomena corresponding to quantum phenomena. Energy of a particle in a confining potential is quantized to the same values as those of QM. Particle distribution in an ensemble disagrees with that of QM, but agrees with experiments within experimental uncertainty. The mechanics therefore is a testable alternative to QM.

Abstract:Abstract The book contains lectures notes for a graduate two-semester course in quantum mechanics. It differs from other quantum mechanics textbooks as various parts of the book are inspired by rather recent advances in various areas of physics. For example, the book begins by putting the Schrödinger equation on a spatial discrete lattice, inspired by Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories (HLGT). The book also discusses the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and emphasize the adiabatic time evolution in the case of a time-dependent Hamiltonian. As an example of how to use symmetry in quantum mechanics, the book treats one-dimensional periodic potentials. The book also discusses atoms and molecules using mean-field-like treatment, such as the Hartree–Fock approximation, including a discussion on how to go beyond it. Electron–electron correlations in the hydrogen molecule are taken into account with a first quantized formulation of the two-site Hubbard model, which is solved analytically. The book also uses the canonical Hamiltonian quantization of quantum electrodynamics after finding the normal modes, in an analogy with the treatment of the normal modes of an array of atoms, the photons emerge as the quanta of such normal modes, in the same way as the phonons emerge in the treatment of the normal modes of the coupled array of atoms. This Hamiltonian quantization of the electromagnetic field is used later to treat its interaction with atomic matter, without having to follow the usual semiclassical treatment.

Abstract:We expose the Schrödinger quantum mechanics with traditional applications to Hydrogen atom. We discuss carefully the experimental and theoretical background for the introduction of the Schrödinger, Pauli and Dirac equations, as well as for the Maxwell equations. We explain in detail all basic theoretical concepts. We explain all details of the calculations and mathematical tools: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism for the systems with finite degree of freedom and for fields, Geometric Optics, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and WKB approximation, Noether theory of invariants including the theorem on currents, four conservation laws (energy, momentum, angular momentum and charge), Lie algebra of angular momentum and spherical functions, scattering theory (limiting amplitude principle and limiting absorption principle), the Lienard-Wiechert formulas, Lorentz group and Lorentz formulas, Pauli theorem and relativistic covariance of the Dirac equation, etc. We give a detailed oveview of the conceptual development of the quantum mechanics, and expose main achievements of the ``old quantum mechanics'' in the form of exercises. One of our basic aim in writing this book, is an open and concrete discussion of the problem of a mathematical description of the following two fundamental quantum phenomena: i) Bohr's quantum transitions and ii) de Broglie's wave-particle duality. Both phenomena cannot be described by autonomous linear dynamical equations, and we give them a new mathematical treatment related with recent progress in the theory of global attractors of nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs.

Abstract:FOR the student beginning theoretical mechanics a treatment based entirely on Newton's laws of motion seems to be not only desirable but also absolutely necessary if a sound basis on which further development may rest is to be assured. At the outset the reduction to mathematical form of the problems of mechanics has to be faced, and this proves as a rule to be the greatest stumbling-block; the subsequent mathematical treatment appears in the main to offer much less difficulty than the original formulation. The reason for this difficulty in formulation is generally traceable to two causes (1) an insufficient appreciation of the simplifying assumptions in the external conditions which must be made in order to render the problem manageable; (2) an inadequate grasp of the mechanical principles contained in Newton's laws. To overcome (1) there must be a careful specification of the conditions under which the solution is sought and a minimum use of conventional language. The remedy for (2) is a proper explanation and exemplification of principles. This, it is Prof. Plummer's object to supply.

Abstract:The goal of this book is to present classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics in an almost completely algebraic setting, thereby introducing mathematicians, physicists, and engineers to the ideas relating classical and quantum mechanics with Lie algebras and Lie groups. The book emphasizes the closeness of classical and quantum mechanics, and the material is selected in a way to make this closeness as apparent as possible. Much of the material covered here is not part of standard textbook treatments of classical or quantum mechanics (or is only superficially treated there). For physics students who want to get a broader view of the subject, this book may therefore serve as a useful complement to standard treatments of quantum mechanics. Almost without exception, this book is about precise concepts and exact results in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics. The structural properties of mechanics are discussed independent of computational techniques for obtaining quantitatively correct numbers from the assumptions made. The standard approximation machinery for calculating from first principles explicit thermodynamic properties of materials, or explicit cross sections for high energy experiments can be found in many textbooks and is not repeated here.

Abstract:Authoritative appraisals have qualified this book as an "axiomatic" theory. However, given that its essential content is no more than an analogy, its theoretical organization cannot be axiomatic. Indeed, in the first edition Dirac declares that he had avoided an axiomatic presentation. Moreover, I show that the text aims to solve a basic problem (How quantum mechanics is similar to classical mechanics?). A previous paper analyzed all past theories of physics, chemistry and mathematics, presented by the respective authors non-axiomatically. Four characteristic features of a new model of organizing a theory were recognized. A careful examination of Dirac's text shows that it actually applied this kind of organization of a theory, confirming formally what Kronz and Lupher suggested through intuitive categories (pragmatism and rigour), i.e. Dirac's formulation of Quantum mechanics represents a distinct theoretical approach from von Neumann's axiomatic approach. However, since the second edition Dirac has changed his approach: although relying again on analogy, his theory refers to the axiomatic method. Some considerations on the odd paths which led to the present formulation of QM are added. They suggest that a new foundation of this theory needs to be found.

Abstract:There is a huge number of excellent and comprehensive textbooks on quantum mechanics. They mainly differ for the approach, more or less oriented to the formalism rather than to the phenomenology, as well as for the topics covered. These lectures have been based mainly on the classical textbook by Gasiorowicz (1974). I must confess that the main reason for my choice of Gasiorowicz (1974) is affective, as it was the textbook where I first learned the basic principles of quantum mechanics. Beyond my personal taste, I now recognize that Gasiorowicz (1974) is still a very good textbook on quantum mechanics, with a rigorous theoretical approach accompanied by a wide collection of applications. If the textbook by Gasiorowicz was my main basis, I have taken much also from other textbooks such as Phillips (2003), as well as from the excellent classical textbook by Dirac (1981). In order to avoid complications in the mathematics and in the notation, the topic is presented in these notes with reference to one-dimensional systems, with just a few marginal extensions to the three-dimensional formulation.

Abstract:Both relativistic mechanics and Newtonian mechanics are based on principles that have ontological implications. We propose a series of formalisms that rigorously define the ontology underlying mechanical theories, in order to clarify and formally establish the ontology of the physics of motion. Special attention has been paid to relativistic theories. Through the proposed methodology, the concept of ontological consistency is developed and the conditions required for such consistency to be satisfied in any theory are established. In particular, the consistency test is performed for Newtonian mechanics, special relativity theory, and general relativity theory.
