Abstract:THE study of pure mechanism, a branch of kinematics, in general consists of the solution of the following problems:—Given the mode of connection of two or more points or bodies with each other, required their comparative motion, and conversely given their comparative motion to find their proper connection. Now the comparative motion of two points is determined, as laid down by Willis, when (1) the velocity ratio or the proportion which their velocities bear to each other, and (2) their directional relations, are known; the latter requiring for its complete determination (a) the angle between the directions compared, (b) the angle which the plane containing the two directions makes with a plane fixed in space, and (c) the angle the intersection of the two planes makes with a fixed line on the latter plane. In “Kinematics of Machinery,” the English translation by Prof. A. B. W. Kennedy of Prof. Reuleaux's “Theoretische Kinematik,”1 the study is confined within narrower limits, causing the translator not a little difficulty, as he expresses in his preface, to translate the word kinematic, carrying as it does a more extended signification here than on the Continent. Starting with the condition that the change of position is definite at each instant, and determined by the form and connection of the fixed and moving parts, Prof. Reuleaux proceeds to investigate the directional relations of the motion and the arrangements of the parts by which the motion is best brought about without any reference to the idea of velocity.

Abstract:FOR the student beginning theoretical mechanics a treatment based entirely on Newton's laws of motion seems to be not only desirable but also absolutely necessary if a sound basis on which further development may rest is to be assured. At the outset the reduction to mathematical form of the problems of mechanics has to be faced, and this proves as a rule to be the greatest stumbling-block; the subsequent mathematical treatment appears in the main to offer much less difficulty than the original formulation. The reason for this difficulty in formulation is generally traceable to two causes (1) an insufficient appreciation of the simplifying assumptions in the external conditions which must be made in order to render the problem manageable; (2) an inadequate grasp of the mechanical principles contained in Newton's laws. To overcome (1) there must be a careful specification of the conditions under which the solution is sought and a minimum use of conventional language. The remedy for (2) is a proper explanation and exemplification of principles. This, it is Prof. Plummer's object to supply.

And he characterized the Scientific Revolution as the mechanization of the world picture, in which, again, mathematization played the central role. His position in the debate about the “two cultures” can be seen in the same light: he argued that, fundamentally, the scientific method is as applicable to the arts as to the natural sciences; in both, generalization and mathematization should be the governing notions. This book is the result of extensive research: van Berkel consulted numerous archives, personal as well as institutional. Abstract:Mechanics is the science of forces and motions. When employed in its classical connotation, as opposed to statistical or quantum mechanics, it may be defined as that discipline which investigates the macroscopic response of systems to the action of forces and/or couples. The methods used are analytical, numerical and experimental. Systems considered may be discrete, in aggregate or continuous. The number of basic concepts involved in this science is small; the most important ones being force, mass, length, and time. The connections between these major concepts are provided by a few experimentally based postulates and assumptions. Logical deduction from these postulates and assumptions leads to quite detailed predictions of the consequences. Mechanics, the first example of a quantitative mathematical theory describing physical phenomena, began more than two millennia ago. Archimedes (287-212 B.C.) is generally considered to be one of the first mechanicians. As a science which began as the contemplation of nature, mechanics has intrigued almost all of the great scientists of all times. Among the more familiar ones, we can name the following few: Stev in(1548–1620), Gali1eo((1564–1642), Hooke(1635–1703 ), Newton(1642–1727), Eu1er(1707–1783), d’Alembert(1717–1783), Lagrange(1736–1813), Laplace(1749–1827), Einstein(1879–1955). Mechanics has been an essential component of natural philosophy ever since Newton published his “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica” (1687). In spite of its being one of the oldest physical sciences, mechanics continues to be a lively and fascinating subject. This is due to the fact that mechanics continually expands its areas of application; a more recent one being biomechanics.

Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

Abstract:To facilitate teaching of quantum mechanics on undergraduate and even advanced secondary school levels, we present an unabridged translation of the original German text of the famous Werner Heisenberg's breakthrough paper of 1925 into Czech language. While the paper introduces fundamentally new concepts into mechanics, and it contains a relatively large number of equations, its conceptual side is surprisingly lightweight when it comes to the use of advanced mathematics. The discussions contained in its Section 1 allow students of quantum mechanics to contemplate the reasons for the inadequacy of classical kinematic concepts in the micro-world. Understanding of the kinematic transition from real valued functions to complex valued "matrices", which is the central point of the paper, can be reached with relatively elementary mathematics. Translations of the Heisenberg's work into languages other than English provide a unique opportunity to introduce the great scientific concepts of quantum mechanics first hand to a broader audience of students who have yet to reach proficiency in the current scientific lingua franca. The present translation is equipped with footnotes explaining the notation, identifying several typos and pointing out sudden changes in notation in the original paper.

Abstract:Major contributions to machining and grinding research in the US came in the twentieth century. The seminal work by Frederick Winslow Taylor on the Art of Cutting Metals published in 1907 was the beginning of a series of serious and systematic studies on the various aspects of metal cutting and grinding in this century. This monumental work, which became an American classic, continues to inspire many a researcher in this field even today. It was followed by the works of other pioneers, including Orlan W Boston, Hans Ernst, M E Martellotti, Max Kronenberg, M Eugene Merchant, Milton C Shaw, Michael Field, John Kahles, K J Roubik, K Armitage, Ken Trigger, B T Chao, Alfred Schmidt, William W Gilbert, Fran Boulger, Lester Colwell, Carl Oxford, Erich Thomsen, Robert Hahn, and many others. Many of the associates of the pioneers including Nathan Cook, Iain Finnie, B F von Turkovich, Shiro Kobayaski, Inyong Ham, E Loewen, and others including W B Rice, S M Wu, and J Tlusty have made significant contributions to these fields in their own right. There is no doubt that this century will be heralded by the historians as the golden age of metal cutting and grinding research, particularly the period between 1940 and 1960. It was, however, M Eugene Merchant’s paper on the Basic Mechanics of the Metal Cutting Process in 1945 that took a giant step from the art of metal cutting to the science of metal cutting. This work laid the foundation for much of the work that is practiced today. It can be stated unequivocally that because of the significant contributions by the pioneers and their associates, metal cutting and grinding research today is rich in its heritage and contents, and has contributed towards the improvement of manufacturing productivity. It has thereby facilitated the improvement of living standards around the world. In this review, the following ten topics are addressed briefly: Physics of Machining; Mechanics of Machining; Shear and Friction in Machining; Thermal Aspects of Machining and Grinding; Tool Materials, Tool Wear, and Machinability; Multiple Cutting Points; Grinding; Vibrations in Machining; Surface Integrity; and Economics of Machining.

Abstract:This paper simply expounds the history for development of physical science.In the late years of the 19th century, physics developed considerably and formed three branches of science——Newton's mechanics, studying on the motion of body; thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, studying on the thermal motion of substances and electrodynamics, studying on electromagnetic wave and light wave. But these three classical mechanics faced the new challenges in the early part of the 20~(th) century. As the result, the three basic theories have developed appropriately——special relativity, general relativity; quantum theory, quantum mechanics; aggregate theory, aggregate mechanics. The concrete practice shows that they are a great success in solving new problems.

Abstract:The following translation of Leonhard Euler's "Examination of an Artifice for Propelling a Ship by the Principle of Internal Motion," originally published in 1750, offers a glimpse into a fascinating historical debate in the field of mechanics. This work critically examines a proposal by Jacob Bernoulli, one of the foremost mathematicians of the 17th century, who suggested that a ship could be propelled by forces entirely confined within the vessel itself-a concept that contradicts the principles of classical mechanics. This translation is intended to make Euler's insights accessible to a modern audience, highlighting the enduring relevance of these foundational principles.
