Abstract:Graph theory of configurational and viscoelastic properties of polymers has been extended to treat cyclic and star-shaped chains containing small copolymeric blocks in the free-draining limit. Analytical expressions of the zero-shear-rate viscosity η4 and the steady-state recoverable compliance J of these types are obtained. In the Rouse theory of viscoelastic behaviour η0 and J are directly related to the moments of the radius of gyration 〈S2〉 and 〈S4〉, hence both can be obtained simultaneously. Particularly, the relaxation spectrum of cyclic alternating block copolymer chains can also be obtained. The results obtained in this paper indicate that the structures of these types of chains are altered locally by the incorporation of a small concentration of another type of segments; the variation in viscoelasticities cannot be ignored and shows a strong dependence on block configuration. The results obtained may prove useful for understanding and interpreting the rheological data of block copolymers.

Abstract:The spring-and-bead model proposed by Rouse and Zimm can theoretically treat the viscoelastic behaviour of polymers. In this paper, we first point out that the Rouse and Zimm matrices in the molecular theory of polymer viscoelasticities are equivalent to the adjacency matrix and admittance (or Kirchhoff) matrix in graph theory, respectively. In order to solve the eigen-value problems of Rouse and Zimm matrices, the matrices are first represented by their corresponding eigen-graphs, which reflect the topological structure of the real chain. Starting from the eigen-graph, instead of tedious mathematics, the eigen-value problems are solved by a series of simple graphic operations, such as cutting-off the bonds, removing the closed pathways, etc. The eigen-polynomial of Rouse and Zimm matrices and the viscoelastic properties of the chain are obtained by using the theorems given in this paper. It is also shown that the eigen-polynomial of the chain can be greatly reduced if the chain graph has elements of symmetry. As the Rouse theory of viscoelasticity is closely related to the conformational statistics of Gaussian chains, it is demonstrated that the graph-theoretic approach developed here can also be applied to solve the configurational properties of Gaussian chains, such as the distribution function of the radius of gyration and its moments, the shape of a Gaussian chain, etc. We have also demonstrated that the graph-theoretic approach developed here is also applicable to copolymeric chains.

When the structure of a linear polymer is altered locally by incorporating a small amount of another monomer, the variation of the viscoelasticity cannot be ignored, their variation being strongly dependent on the block structure. Thus, the results obtained may prove useful for understanding and interpreting rheological data of block copolymers.

The conformational energy and free energy per bond of polymer chains under different elasticity deformation were calculated. The contribution of energy to the elasticity deformation was also discussed here.

Abstract:It is of great importance to polymerize multivinyl monomers and simultaneously circumvent uncontrollable polymerization process and low gel point. Hereby, a type of divinyl monomer: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was successfully homopolymerized by kinetically controlled Cu-0 and Cu-II-meadiated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). The kinetic study showed a well-controlled polymerization behaviour. During the initial stage, a linear chain propagation was observed with a low polydispersity (< 1.35) demonstrating the controlled/living polymerization feature. However, the products obtained during this stage showed a high consumption of pendent vinyl groups (around 28%) based on the analysis by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR). This high pendent vinyl conversion in the linear chain propagation stage is attributed to the significant involvement of the intramolecular cyclization. The promotion of the intramolecular cyclization and suppression of the intermolecular crosslinking is achieved by the low kinetic chain length and low polymer volume concentration. Given the coexistence of linear chain propagation and high pendent vinyl conversion, the novel single chain cyclized polymer structure was formed during this process, which was further used as polymeric nanoparticles to modify the viscoelasticity of linear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) melts. The essentially similar chemical structure between the EGDMA and MMA ensures the minimization of enthalpic interactions and dispersion forces between the nanoparticles and linear melts. The oscillatory rheology study and the subsequent time temperature superposition based on the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation demonstrated the coexistence of the segmental relaxation at high frequencies and chain relaxation at low frequencies. The complex viscosity studied as a function of the shear frequency showed the decrease in terminal viscosity with addition of 10 wt% single chain cyclized polyEGDMA nanoparticles. A further decrease was also observed with the addition of 20 wt% nanoparticles, which is not in agreement with Einstein relationship between the complex viscosity and fraction of added particles. This strategy provides a simple and efficient approach to control polymerization of multivinyl monomers, and the unexpected decrease in viscosity of the blend system should in principle open a new avenue to modify polymer melts and molten systems.

Abstract:We have advanced our previous static theory of polymer entanglement involving an extended Cahn-Hilliard functional, to include time-dependent dynamics. We go beyond the Gaussian approximation, to the one-loop level, to compute the frequency dependent storage and loss moduli of the system. The three parameters in our theory are obtained by fitting to available experimental data on polystyrene melts of various chain lengths. This provides a physical representation of the parameters in terms of the chain length of the system. We discuss the importance of the various terms in our energy functional with respect to their contribution to the viscoelastic response of the polymeric system.

Abstract:The spinodal decomposition of a binary mixture subjected to simple shear flow is investigated in the framework of the modified time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation with an external velocity term. The domain growth and related rheological properties of a binary mixture under shear flow are simulated in three dimensions by means of the cell dynamics scheme (CDS). The simulation results show that the domain growth is anistropic and depends on the terminal relaxation time of the polymer chain. It is found that lamellae-like domains with the normal parallel to the velocity gradient direction are observed when the terminal relaxation time is long enough. This result has also been confirmed by carefully checking the scattering functions in different incident light directions and the evolution of the domain size in different directions. In addition, when the chain stretching effect is strong, the transients of the excess shear viscosity are much higher than the case without the chain stretching effect. The terminal relaxation time of the chain also has an important effect on the first and second normal stress differences.

Abstract:In frameworks of the scaling theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena the quantitative dependence of macroscopic properties on nanostructural parameters in a polymeric material is revealed. The draw ratios at neck and at break are referred to the macroscopic properties. The structure is characterized by an average thickness of amorphous layers in isotropic melt-crystallized linear high density polyethylene which is chosen as an example. The square of the neck draw ratio is equal to the product of the square of the draw ratio at break and the chain ends collision probability. This probability in its turn is proportional to the average thickness of amorphous layers in the isotropic material. The neck draw ratio is a parameter of order. Polymers with flexible chains are solutions in solid state as well as in melt, the interacting ends of a marked chain serving as a solvent. At critical polymerization degree all the phases are identical. This research is an important contribution to the molecular theory of polymer liquids. It has been found that the melt viscosity vs the molecular weight of linear flexible-chain polymer follows the power law with the 3.4-exponent within the reptation model near the critical point. This is different from the value 3 expected for the melt of ring macromolecules. The rotation vibration precession motion of chain ends about the polymer melt flow direction were taken into account to find better agreement with the experiment.

Abstract:We briefly review the recent advances in the rheology of entangled polymers and identify emerging research trends and outstanding challenges, especially with respect to branched polymers. Emphasis is placed on the role of well-characterized model systems, as well as the synergy of synthesis-characterization, rheometry and modeling/simulations. The theoretical framework for understanding the observed linear and nonlinear rheological phenomena is the tube model which is critically assessed in view of its successes and shortcomings, whereas alternative approaches are briefly discussed. Finally, intriguing experimental findings and controversial issues that merit consistent explanation, such as shear banding instabilities, multiple stress overshoots in transient simple shear and enhanced steady-state elongational viscosity in polymer solutions, are discussed, whereas future directions such as branch point dynamics and anisotropic monomeric friction are outlined.

Abstract:New theoretical relations in linear viscoelasticity are derived by combining two different points of view. On the one hand, the general thermodynamic framework makes it possible to define the energy stored and the energy dissipated in linearly viscoelastic composites. On the other hand, the correspondence principle permits to express the macroscopic strain-stress relation as ordinary differential equations for a set of effective internal variables. A finite and small number of internal variables is rigorously sufficient in several cases of interest, including in particular particulate composites. Interpreting the macroscopic response as a rheological generalized Maxwell model allows us to compute the macroscopic free and dissipated energy of the composite. This interpretation is proved to be exact in several cases of interest. Coupled with Hashin–Shtrikman estimates, these thermodynamic functions provide additional information on the statistics of the field within each individual phase of the composite.

Abstract:Polymers bearing associative groups can exhibit fascinating rheological behaviors. A modified version of the Rouse model, which is originally used in block copolymers and called the sticky Rouse model here, is proposed to describe the linear viscoelasticity (LVE) of this kind of polymers without the effect of entanglement. By replacing the lifetime of a transient bond by the effective friction on stickers, the calculation of LVE functions is turned into the eigenvalue problem of the sticky Rouse-Zimm (RZ) matrix. The results show that only two parameters, sticker concentration representing the network microstructure and association interaction strength, can understand the LVE for associative polymers. In particular, the description of LVE from previous theories can be integrated in this unified theoretical framework. From the analysis of eigenvectors, it is further inferred that the rotational motion of bridge structures should be responsible for the longest relaxation times in rheology.

Abstract:The dynamic response of prestressed semiflexible biopolymers is characterized by the propagation and relaxation of tension, which arises due to the near inextensibility of a stiff backbone. It is coupled to the dynamics of contour length stored in thermal undulations, but also to the local relaxation of elongational strain. We present a systematic theory of tension dynamics for stiff yet extensible wormlike chains. Our results show that even moderate prestress gives rise to distinct Rouse-like extensibility signatures in the high-frequency viscoelastic response.

Mesoscopic Dynamics Of Inhomogeneous Polymers Based On Variable Cell Shape Dynamic Self-Consistent Field Theory

Abstract:In this paper, we combine variable cell shape method with dynamic self-consistent field theory and extend to study structure and dynamics under shear for triblock copolymer melts. Due to shear, the calculation cell shape is variable and no longer orthogonal. Pseudospectral method is employed to solve the diffusion equation for chain propagator on the nonorthogonal coordinate and the shear periodical condition can be easily designed in terms of the variable cell shape method. By using this strategy, the shear induced morphology evolution is investigated for topologically complex polymeric systems such as linear and star triblock copolymers; the morphology of linear ABC triblock copolymers is more shear sensitive than that of star triblocks. In particular, once the chain propagator is obtained, the microscopic elastic stress and spatial stress distribution can be derived and thus the dynamic mechanical property can be calculated under shear. By imitating the dynamic storage modulus G(') corresponding to any given morphology in the oscillatory shear measurements, we explore the relationship between the morphology and the storage modulus G(') and extend to study the mechanism of phase separation dynamics as well as order-disorder transition (ODT) for linear and star triblock copolymers. The results show that the chain architecture can be easily distinguished by investigating the ODT, though the systems such as AB symmetric diblock and ABA triblock copolymers by coupling AB precursors almost exhibit similar microstructures. In addition, the storage modulus G(') and loss modulus G(') can be simultaneously determined in frequency sweeps of oscillatory shear measurements and the dependence of the moduli on phase separated patterns and the chain topology is investigated. The simulation findings are in qualitatively agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:In liquid crystal elastomers, the orientational order of liquid crystals is coupled with elastic distortions of crosslinked polymer networks. Previous theoretical research has described these materials through two different approaches: a neoclassical theory based on the liquid crystal director and the deformation tensor, and a geometric elasticity theory based on the difference between the actual metric tensor and a reference metric. Here, we connect those two approaches using a formalism based on differential geometry. Through this connection, we determine how both the director and the geometry respond to a change of temperature.

Abstract:A nonlinear viscoelastic theory of nematodynamic type is developed for nematic liquid crystalline (LC) semi-flexible polymers. A measure of transient elastic strain due to the change in length of macromolecular strands under stress, and the director of unit length are employed in the theory as hidden variables. In the marked contrast to the common theoretical approaches to low molecular nematics, the effect of directors space gradient is neglected in the present theory. Nevertheless, the theory allows describing nonlinear anisotropic viscoelasticity and evolution equation for the director in flows of LC polymers. When LC macromolecules are relatively rigid or when they are soft but the flow is slow, a weakly nonlinear viscoelastic anisotropic behavior is described by few temperature dependent parameters. In the infinitesimal case the evolution equation for director reminds the Ericksens equation, but with an additional relaxation term. The present theory can also be applied for analyzing flows of concentrated polymer suspensions and nano-composites filled with uniaxially symmetric particles.

Abstract:We propose a physical model for the nonlinear inelastic mechanics of sticky biopolymer networks with potential applications to inelastic cell mechanics. It consists of a minimal extension of the glassy wormlike chain (Gwlc) model, which has recently been highly successful as a quantitative mathematical description of the viscoelastic properties of biopolymer networks and cells. To extend its scope to nonequilibrium situations, where the thermodynamic state variables may evolve dynamically, the Gwlc is furnished with an explicit representation of the kinetics of breaking and reforming sticky bonds. In spite of its simplicity, the model exhibits many experimentally established nontrivial features such as power-law rheology, stress stiffening, fluidization and cyclic softening effects.

Statistical field theory for nonlinear elasticity of polymer networks with excluded volume interactions

Abstract:Polymer networks formed by cross linking flexible polymer chains are ubiquitous in many natural and synthetic soft-matter systems. Current micromechanics models generally do not account for excluded volume interactions except, for instance, through imposing a phenomenological incompressibility constraint at the continuum scale. This work aims to examine the role of excluded volume interactions on the mechanical response. The approach is based on the framework of the self-consistent statistical field theory of polymers, which provides an efficient mesoscale approach that enables the accounting of excluded volume effects without the expense of large-scale molecular modeling. A mesoscale representative volume element is populated with multiple interacting chains, and the macroscale nonlinear elastic deformation is imposed by mapping the end-to-end vectors of the chains by this deformation. In the absence of excluded volume interactions, it recovers the closed-form results of the classical theory of rubber elasticity. With excluded volume interactions, the model is solved numerically in three dimensions using a finite element method to obtain the energy, stresses, and linearized moduli under imposed macroscale deformation. Highlights of the numerical study include: (i) the linearized Poisson's ratio is very close to the incompressible limit without a phenomenological imposition of incompressibility; (ii) despite the harmonic Gaussian chain as a starting point, there is an emergent strain-softening and strain-stiffening response that is characteristic of real polymer networks, driven by the interplay between the entropy and the excluded volume interactions; and (iii) the emergence of a deformation-sensitive localization instability at large excluded volumes.

Abstract:We study the relaxation dynamics of a coarse-grained polymer chain at different degrees of stretching by both analytical means and numerical simulations. The macromolecule is modelled as a string of beads, connected by anharmonic springs, subject to a tensile force applied at the end monomer of the chain while the other end is fixed at the origin of coordinates. The impact of bond non-linearity on the relaxation dynamics of the polymer at different degrees of stretching is treated analytically within the Gaussian self-consistent approach (GSC) and then compared to simulation results derived from two different methods: Monte-Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD). At low and medium degrees of chain elongation we find good agreement between GSC predictions and the Monte-Carlo simulations. However, for strongly stretched chains the MD method, which takes into account inertial effects, reveals two important aspects of the nonlinear interaction between monomers: (i) a coupling and energy transfer between the damped, oscillatory normal modes of the chain, and (ii) the appearance of non-vanishing contributions of a continuum of frequencies around the characteristic modes in the power spectrum of the normal mode correlation functions.
