Abstract:DSC measurements have been performed on blue bronze K0.3MoO3 between 110 and 295 K. Two anomalies at 240 and 180 K were observed in heating runs. A hysteresis of nearly 40 K at the 240 K anomaly was observed in a cooling run, which indicates a first-order transition.

Abstract:We present results on the normalized resistivity log (R(T)/R(235 K )), nonlinear conductivity, and the excess specific heat ΔCp of K0.3 MoO 3 near the Peierls transition at 180 K. The results indicate that below 180 K the single crystal K0.3 MoO 3 has a semiconductor gap Δ=1320 K (0.114 eV), and that the transition at 180 K is of second order.

Abstract:K0.3MoO3 single crystals with the size of 2cm×1.5cm×1cm have been grown by electrolytic reduction of K2CO3-MoO3 melt with a K2CO3-to-MoO3 mole ratio of 1 to 4.32. The temperature dependence of normalized resistivity R(T)/R(290K)-T of a K0.3MoO3 single crystal has been determined. It is found that the semiconductor gap of the single crystal is 1320K(0.11eV). The threshold electric field ET is ０.1２９Ｖ／ｃｍ derived from the data of nonlinear conductivity at T=77K．ＤＳＣ study of the samples shows that the K0.3MoO3 single crystal undertakes a new Peierls phase transition around 240K and that the phase transition is of first order. The Δｃp-Ｔ curve shows that the phase transition around T=180K is a combination of a second order and a first.

Abstract:The phonon instability and thermal equation of state of Mo are extensively investigated using density functional theory. The calculated phonon dispersion curves agree well with experiments. Under compression, we captured a large softening in the transverse acoustic (TA) branches of body-centred cubic Mo. When the pressure is raised to 716 GPa, the frequencies along Gamma-N in the TA branches soften to imaginary frequencies, indicating structural instability. For face-centred cubic Mo, the phonon calculations predicted the stability by promoting the frequencies from imaginary to real. Within quasi-harmonic approximation, we predicted the thermal equation of state and some other properties including the thermal expansion coefficient alpha, product alpha K-T, heat capacity C-V, entropy S, Gruneisen parameter gamma and Debye temperature Theta(D). The melting curves of Mo were also obtained successfully.

Abstract:Except for a Peierls transition at T(p) = 180 K, a new transition around T = 270 K in K0.3MoO3 single crystals has been found as evidenced by the anomalies in electrical, magnetic and thermodynamic properties. This transition may be caused by the variation of carrier characteristics or of the charge transfer between cations and anions.

Abstract:The high quality and cm-dimension red bronze single crystal K0.33MoO3 was prepared by the EHTS method using new molar ratio. In the temperature range from 130 to 410 K, the samples have semiconductor-like temperature dependence of resistance, i.e., log R∝1/T, and the energy gap Eg is calculated to be approximately 0.4 eV.

Abstract:Temperature dependencies of the Raman spectra of pure K 0.3 MoO 3 and thallium-doped K 0.15 Tl 0.15 MoO 3 blue bronzes are reported. The results showed that in pure bronze the commensurate domains separated by discommensurations occur below 100 K, perhaps as a result of the influence of the commensurate potentials of the undistorted alkaline sublattice. The disorder Tl-impurities may destroy the commensurate domains and lead to complete incommensuration in Tl-doped blue bronze below 100 K. The tremendous critical fluctuations and impurity-induced lack of long-range order of incommensurate CDW would lead to the spectral continuum or its disappearing. The weak softening of the amplitude mode is about 11%, which is similar to previous report. We were also the first to observe two strong new modes at about 76 cm −1 and 86 cm −1 in the distorted CDW state and attributed them to zone center excitations of the phonon branches at zone boundary due to CDW-induced collapse of the Brillouin zone at T p .

Abstract:We report on time-resolved ultrafast optical measurements on a blue bronze (K0.3MoO3) single crystal grown by the electro-crystallization of high-temperature solution method. The differential reflectivity shows coherent THz and GHz oscillations due to the excitation of amplitudon and phason of charge–density waves in the long-wavelength limit. The wavelength dependence of the period of such oscillations allows us to determine the dispersion relationship of these modes. A linear gapless, acoustic-like dispersion relation is observed for the transverse phasons with a pronounced anisotropy. The amplitude mode exhibits a weak optic-like dispersion relation with a frequency of 1.67THz at 30K. Our results show for the first time that the time-resolved optical technique provides momentum resolution of collective excitations in strongly correlated electron systems.

Abstract:Structure, magnetization, and specific heat have been investigated for the Mo-doping La0.67Sr0.33Mn1−xMoxO3 (x=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.06) perovskite system. The ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature Tc is found to decrease from 369K for x=0 to 361K for x=0.06 with increasing Mo doping. According to a second-order phase transition model, the critical behavior near Tc are investigated systematically based on the specific heat data, and the critical exponents are determined to be α=0.04–0.06, β=0.35–0.41, γ=1.13–1.25. The values of the critical exponents are found to keep almost same magnitude for La0.67Sr0.33Mn1−xMoxO3 system. It is noticed that the value of the critical exponent β locates between the mean-field value (β=0.5) and the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model value (β=0.325), which suggests the coexistence of the short-range and long-range ferromagnetic orders around the critical temperature. The fundamental factors to dominate the magnitude of the critical exponent values for the perovskite-type manganese oxide systems have been discussed as well.

Abstract:Low-energy coherent charge-density wave excitations are investigated in blue bronze (K0.3MoO3) and red bronze (K0.33MoO3) by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Abstract:We report a comparative study of the specific heat, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes Na_0.9Mo_6O_17 and K_0.9Mo_6O_17, with special emphasis on the behavior near their respective charge-density-wave transition temperatures T_P. The contrasting behavior of both the transport and the thermodynamic properties near T_P is argued to arise predominantly from the different levels of intrinsic disorder in the two systems. A significant proportion of the enhancement of the thermal conductivity above T_P in Na_0.9Mo_6O_17, and to a lesser extent in K_0.9Mo_6O_17, is attributed to the emergence of phason excitations.

Abstract:By using the low temperature x-ray diffraction (LTXD) we investigated several phase transitions which accompany with the crystal distortion. In our present report we will mainly discuss the integrated intensity (I.I.) of the x-ray spectrum. The temperature dependence of I.I. can be expressed by the Debye-Waller factor. As a precursor effect of the crystal phase transition, the softening of the lattice occurs. Due to the softening of the lattice, the I.I. drastically decreases down to the crystal phase transition temperature. We observed this effect in many materials. Here we will show some of them, iron pnictide superconductor SmFe0.925Co0.075AsO, and magnetic ordering compounds PrCu4Ag and Nd2Ti2O7.

Abstract:The thermal expansion and phase transition of solid solutions Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The XRD patterns and the results of Rietveld refinement of Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 indicate that the solid solution limit was in the composition range of 0.0≤x≤0.4 and 1.7≤x≤2.0. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (0.0≤x≤0.4) has an orthorhombic structure and exhibits negative thermal expansion between 200°C and 800°C. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) crystallizes in monoclinic below the phase transition and above, transforms to orthorhombic. Both monoclinic and orthorhombic compounds Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) present positive thermal expansion. Orthorhombic Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion with the contraction of a and c axes, and the linear thermal expansion coefficients range from negative to positive with increasing chromium content. Partial substitution of Yb3+ for Cr3+ exhibits depressed monoclinic to orthorhombic phase transition.
Topological Phase Transition Between Distinct Weyl Semimetal States in MoTe2

Abstract:We present experimental evidence of an intriguing phase transition between distinct topological states in the type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. We observe anomalies in the Raman phonon frequencies and linewidths as well as electronic quasielastic peaks around 70 K, which, together with structural, thermodynamic measurements, and electron-phonon coupling calculations, demonstrate a temperature-induced transition between two topological phases previously identified by contrasting spectroscopic measurements. An analysis of experimental data suggests electron-phonon coupling as the main driving mechanism for the change of key topological characters in the electronic structure of MoTe2.We also find the phase transition to be sensitive to sample conditions distinguished by synthesis methods. These discoveries of temperature and material condition-dependent topological phase evolutions and transitions in MoTe2 advance the fundamental understanding of the underlying physics and enable an effective approach to tuning Weyl semimetal states for technological applications.
Two Phase Transitions in Zn-doped YBCO Superconductor

Abstract:A series polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3−xZnxO7−δ (x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25, respectively) were studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, and resistance–temperature measurement. It is found that there are two unknown subtle phase transitions in each compound before melting. At about 430°C and 800°C the samples show an endothermal anomaly and a weight loss, respectively. The amount of Zn-dopant affects the phase transitions obviously. Careful analysis of the experimental results demonstrates that two-phase transitions come out of different structural blocks, perovskite and rock salt, in the compounds.

Abstract:X-ray studies of the phase composition, lattice parameters, and molar volumes are carried out at the phase transitions in solid oxygen. In the region of the low-temperature transition a two-phase state is observed in a region having a width of 2 K on cooling of the samples and less than 0.8 K on heating. The width of the temperature hysteresis and the jump in volume at the transition are determined. The mean value of the volume jump is ∼0.5±0.2%. The structural characteristics found are convincing evidence that the low-temperature magnetic transformation in solid oxygen, like the high-temperature orientational transition, is a first-order transition. It is shown that at relatively high rates of passage through the β–γ transition, owing to the significant jump in volume and the high stress level, it is possible to supercool the γ phase down to helium temperature and to superheat the intermediate β phase almost to the melting temperature.

Abstract:Three series of polycrystalline samples of YBa(2)Cu(3- x)Ni(x)O(y)(YBCNO), Y(1-x)Pr(x)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) (YPrBCO) and YBa(2-x)La(x)Cu(3)O(y) (YBLCO) (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, respectively), synthesized by a solid state reaction technique, were characterized by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, DC magnetization measurement, temperature dependent x-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. To our knowledge this is the first systematic report of two phase transitions at about 400 and 850 degrees C before melting. By careful measurements it was seen that the amounts of the percentage weight loss and the DSC changes, along with T(c), decrease with increasing dopant. Combining the theory of oxygen diffusion with the block model in YBCO, the mechanism of the phase transitions can be explained as follows: the phase transition at 400 degrees C comes directly from O(1) in the rock salt block, while the phase transition at 850 degrees C is related to the perovskite block. The calculation of the combinative energy between the two structural rock salt and perovskite blocks shows that, with increasing dopant, the higher the combinative energy the lower the T(c), and vice versa. The results indicate that there exits a triangular relationship among thermal anomalies, superconductivity and structural blocks in different-metal-site-doped YBCO, which may be significant for understanding the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have shown promise in electronics and optoelectronics applications. Most of their properties are closely related to their abundant structural phases and phase transitions. For more practical applications in the future, it is necessary to tune the phase transitions in this material system. Here, we demonstrate the modulation of phase transitions in miscible WxMo1-xTe2 samples by appropriate alloying. The temperature dependent thermal conductivity along the c-axis, which strongly relates to the phase structures and the defect level, has been measured using the time-domain thermoreflectance method. In addition, a tunable hysteretic effect, induced by phase transitions, is observed in both thermal and electrical transport properties and confirmed by the consistent hysteresis in the Raman spectroscopic study. This hysteretic effect can be applied to realize phase-change storage devices. Furthermore, we provide a phase diagram to illustrate the composition dependent phase transition in WxMo1-xTe2. This work demonstrates an approach to modulate phase transition and thermal hysteresis in such a TMD material system by alloying engineering. Published by AIP Publishing.
Novel Transitions in Doped Mott-Insulator K X CoO 2

Abstract:By measuring the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, two distinct transitions have been observed in potassium doped cobalt oxide KxCoO2 (x = 0.2-1.0). The transition around 125 K corresponds to a phase transition between a weak ferromagnetic plus a strong superparamagnetic phase (below 125 K) and a superparamagnetic phase (above 125K). The susceptibility above the Curie point Tc cannot be described by the Curie-Weise law, being consistent with the superparamagnetism. Magnetization-hysteresis-loops have been measured in different temperature regions to uncover the underlying physics. The second transition near 30.8K shows a strong novelty.
Phase transition temperature and negative thermal expansion of Sc-substituted In2(MoO4)3 ceramics

Abstract:A series of Sc-substituted In2Mo3O12 ceramics were synthesized by the chemical co-precipitation method. The results reveal that In3+ can be substituted by Sc3+ and form a single phase with high purity for all In2−xScxMo3O12 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5) samples. The crystal structure of In2−xScxMo3O12 changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic symmetry with increasing Sc3+-content, confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). With increasing concentration of A-site Sc3+ cations, the microstructure of In2−xScxMo3O12 becomes denser and the shape and size distribution of grains is more regular and uniform. The monoclinic-to-orthorhombic phase transition temperature of In2Mo3O12 is successfully decreased from 343 °C to room temperature via the substitution of In3+ by Sc3+. When x = 1.5, the occurrence of the monoclinic-to-orthorhombic phase transition for In0.5Sc1.5Mo3O12 solid solution is at around 7 °C. It has an average linear coefficient of thermal expansion of − 5.08 × 10−6 °C−1 in 25–600 °C. The phase transition results obtained by theoretical calculation using the framework of spin-polarized DFT accord well with the experimental evidences.

Abstract:The storage and recall of thermal information can be achieved by a thermal memory, which is a key element in the applications of thermal logic devices. Thermal memories can be experimentally realized by solid-state materials with hysteretic thermal transport properties. Here, by means of the time-domain thermoreflectance method, we observe hysteretic behaviors in the c -axis thermal conductivities of molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe 2 ) in their metastable phases. Supported by the characterizations of Raman modes and electrical resistivity, we infer that this hysteresis is induced by the structural phase transition around 250 K. This thermal hysteresis is dominated by the transportation of phonons and makes it possible to build all-phononic devices based on MoTe 2 . In addition, the mechanism of phonon scatterings is analyzed quantitatively using Boltzmann transport equation. This study provides a promising material system for applications in integrated phononic devices, topological electronics and thermoelectric materials.
