Abstract:We applied power spectral analysis to the redshift distribution of the quasars associated with low-redshift galaxies. Periodicity is confirmed at a level of confidence >99%, with a period of Δln(1+z) = 0.206. This result is exactly the same as previously found for different quasar samples. The periodicity is not caused by any selection effect in the emission lines. The two phenomena, the periodicity in the redhsift distribution and the association of quasars with low-redhsift galaxies can both be rather well explained by a multiply-connected model of the universe.

Abstract:Recently many observational results of the spacial distribution of extragalactic objects challenge the standard view of cosmological model. For example, it is well known that there are two main arguments which are against the cosmological origin of quasar redshift. That is, the associations of quasars with low redshift galaxies ( see: Chu, Zhu, Burbidge and Hewitt (1); Arp (2) ) and the redshift periodic distribution of quasars and other extragalactic objects. ( see: Fang, Chu et. al. (3), Chu and Zhu (4) ). The aim of this work is to point out that these two phenomena maybe related to each other and is not unacceptable under the scheme of cosmological redshift and cosmological principle, only if the universe is multiply connected. In a multiply-connected universe, we can see the original image of an object (low redshift galaxy) and its ghost images (high red-shift quasars) in the same direction. Abstract:We applied the nearest neighbour test in a statistical analysis on the association of quasars and bright galaxies. We found that the radio quasars, especially the radio quasars with large redshifts are clearly associated with bright galaxies.
The Periodicity in the Distribution of Quasar Redshifts and the Density Perturbations in the Early Universe

Abstract:The distribution of emission line redsbifts for quasars has been studied by means of a statistical analysis of the power spectrum. It has been demonstrated that the distribution of all the quasars listed in the new catalogue of Hewitt and Burbidge have, at 99% confidence level, a periodic component with respect to the argument x defined as where z is the redshift of quasars and q_0 the deceleration parameter. This periodicity may be the result of density wave (sound) perturbations occurring just before the recombination epoch of the big bang cosmology. In standard cosmology the Jeans mass is dramatically changed during the recombination epoch. Before the start of recombination, the Jeans mass is correspondingly large, about a million or so times larger than the mass of galaxies. After recombination, the Jeans mass drops by a factor of about 10~(12) to one-millionth of the mass of galaxies. As a result the following process is possible: some sound-like fluctuations with large wavelengths occurring before recombination become the of Jeans instability after recombination. The periodic structure of the can, then, be preserved and amplified by the clustering in successive times. If the formation of quasars is correlated with density inhomogeneity, the existence of periodic components in the quasar redshifts is a natural outcome. Indeed, it can be shown that in the pressureless Friedmann model the periodicity is with respect to argument x given in the Eq. (1), or the peaks in the distribution are determined by x(z_n,q_o)=An+B where A denotes the wavelength of the periodicity, B the initial phase, and n equals a positive integer. The main consequences of this model have been verified through the following tests: 1. According to cosmological principle, it is impossible that the earth occupies a preferred position near the centre of a spherical wave perturbation. The initial phases. of waves propagating to the earth from different directions are random. The periodicity should be smeared by superposition of such density wave fluctuations upon the homogeneous component. On the other hand, a density perturbation from a certain direction can avoid the effect of random phases; one expects, therefore, that the periodicity would be more remarkable for a set of quasars located near a certain position of the sky than that for quasars in all the sky. This point has been varified by the power spectrum of a sample by Savage and Bolton. 2. Before recombination the sound fluctuations were being dissipated due to the. interaction between matter and radiation. Considering the effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity the dissipations of primeval sounds are in proportion to the factor exp (-(λ_c/λ)~2), in which λ_c is a characteristic length and λ is the wavelength of sound. This means the wavelength is longer, the dissipation lower. The strongest seed effect is, thus given by the sound perturbation with largest allowed wavelength just before recombination. From this we can estimate the length of period A as A0.220(H_0/100)(T_0/2.7)~2 where H_0 is the Hubble constant in km/sec·Mpe, and T_0 the cosmic temperature at present. This result is in accord, approximately, with the values A=0.205 given by power spectra. 3. The deceleration parameter q_0 may be determined by the remarkableness of the periodicity, because x is a function of q_0. From this we find q_0 larger than 0.5. It is in accord with the conclusion obtained recently from the massive neutrinos and redshift relations of various quasar subsets.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Observations from wide-field quasar surveys indicate that the quasar autocorrelation length increases dramatically from z ≈ 2.5 to ≈ 4. This large clustering amplitude at z ≈ 4 has proven hard to interpret theoretically, as it implies that quasars are hosted by the most massive dark matter haloes residing in the most extreme environments at that redshift. In this work, we present a model that simultaneously reproduces both the observed quasar autocorrelation and quasar luminosity functions. The spatial distribution of haloes and their relative abundance are obtained via a novel method that computes the halo mass and halo cross-correlation functions by combining multiple large-volume dark-matter-only cosmological simulations with different box sizes and resolutions. Armed with these halo properties, our model exploits the conditional luminosity function framework to describe the stochastic relationship between quasar luminosity, L, and halo mass, M. Assuming a simple power-law relation L ∝ Mγ with lognormal scatter, σ, we are able to reproduce observations at z ∼ 4 and find that: (i) the quasar luminosity–halo mass relation is highly non-linear (γ ≳ 2), with very little scatter (σ ≲ 0.3 dex); (ii) luminous quasars ($\log _{10} L/{\rm erg}\, {\rm s}^{-1}\gtrsim 46.5-47$) are hosted by haloes with mass log10M/M⊙ ≳ 13–13.5; and (iii) the implied duty cycle for quasar activity approaches unity ($\varepsilon _{\rm DC}\approx 10\,\mathrm{ per}\,\mathrm{ cent}-60~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$). We also consider observations at z ≈ 2.5 and find that the quasar luminosity–halo mass relation evolves significantly with cosmic time, implying a rapid change in quasar host halo masses and duty cycles, which in turn suggests concurrent evolution in black hole scaling relations and/or accretion efficiency.

Abstract:Using the quasar sample from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (Foltz et al. 1987) and galaxies of the Virgo cluster from the BST catalog (Binggeli et al. 1985), we make use of the cross-correlation function and find significant evidence for an association between quasars and galaxies in the angular distance range 5' < theta < 40'.
A Possible Bias Model for Quasars

Abstract:We propose that the majority of quasars at redshift z~1-5 formed in the environment of newborn collapsed halos with one-dimensional velocity dispersion σ1dv~400 km s-1. The harboring coefficient f of quasars per halo and the lifetime of quasars depend only on local processes; they are not modulated by the density inhomogeneities on scales larger than the size of the halos. Thus, the bias of quasars on scales larger than the size of these halos is mainly determined by the parameter σv, which is used for quasar environment identification. With this model, the popular structure formation models, like the standard cold dark matter (SCDM) and the low-velocity CDM, can be fairly well reconciled with the data of quasars, including (1) observed features of the environment for quasars, (2) the redshift evolution of quasar abundance, and (3) the two-point correlation functions of quasars. This bias model predicts that the correlation function of quasars does not significantly evolve or only slightly increases with redshift.

Abstract:Association between quasars and galaxies is examined using the two-point correlation function for the quasar sample in the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the Binggeli-Sandage-Tammann galaxy catalog of the Virgo cluster. Statistically significant association is found at angular separations between 5′ and 40′ for the member galaxies of the Virgo cluster, but not for the background galaxies. Relation of the association and the apparent magnitude of the objects is also examined.

Abstract:In this paper a statistical investigation has been made on the redshift-magnitude relation of quasars with radio components structure. The main results are sum-marized in the following way: 1. The largest distance D between components is an important parameter which can be employed to classify the “standard candle”. 2. Seeing that the regression equations with high correlation coefficient among redshifts, apparent magnitude and D have been established, it may be true that the redshift of these quasars is mainly cosmological. 3. It has been found that the redshift-distance relation may be expressed as r∞z-0.19z~2 which departs apparently from Hubble’s linear relation in the range of Z1. 4. The redshift-magnitude relation given by the new redshift-distance relation looks better than Hubble’s for radio galaxies as well. 5. The optical luminosity of quasars decreases as the value of D inereases.

Abstract:We investigate the spatial clustering of galaxies around quasars at redshifts from 0.6 to 1.2 using the photometric data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. The quasar and galaxy cross-correlation functions are measured through the projected galaxy number density n(r_p) on scales $0.05<r_p<20 h^-1 Mpc around quasars for a sample of 2300 quasars from Schneider et al. (2007). We detect strong clustering signals at all redshifts, and find that the clustering amplitude increases significantly with redshift. We examine the dependence of the quasar-galaxy clustering on quasar and galaxy properties and find that the clustering amplitude is significantly larger for quasars with more massive black holes, or with bluer colors, while the dependence on quasar luminosity is absent. We also show that quasars have a stronger correlation amplitude with blue galaxies than with red galaxies. We finally discuss the implication of our finding.

Abstract:We have made statistical analyses of current data on the absorption line redshifts of quasars. All our results, including the distribution of relative velocities and the power-spectrum of the redshift distribution of absorption systems, are in favour of the cosmological hypothesis of the origin of the quasar absorption lines. We point out that the peaks in the relative velocity distribution are no compelling evidence for the rival, intrinsic hypothesis because they can be well explained by the model of density perturbation in the early universe [10].

Abstract The association between quasars and galaxies of different morphological type is examined by applying the cross-correlation function techniques used by Seldner and Pebbles (1979) to a complete catalogue of galaxies. The two-point cross-correlation function technique is first presented and used to analyze all types of galaxies in the Uppsala catalogue. Galaxies are then divided into three broad classifications - sprial, lenticular, and elliptical - and the statistical significance of associations with quasars for these morphological types is examined. The study convincingly indicates a high statistical significance for the sample, with on the average 0.153 + or -0.011 more galaxies within 10.0 arcmin of a quasar than would be expected if the quasars were randomly located. No significant differences are found among the three morphological types of galaxies studied. Abstract:Four galaxies discovered near quasars at redshifts exceeding 6 have star-formation rates that are high enough to explain the massive elliptical galaxies known to exist at redshifts of about 4. Giant elliptical galaxies have already been observed in place at a redshift of 4. This necessitates the existence of galaxies at higher redshifts forming stars at extremely high rates, but such galaxies have hitherto not been seen. Roberto Decarli et al. report the discovery of four galaxies sitting next to the host galaxies of quasars at redshifts exceeding 6 and forming stars at the requisite rates. Simulations of galaxy and structure formation did not predict the presence of such galaxies, and they were found by accident as part of a study of quasar hosts. If these galaxies are representative of a previously unseen population, the frequency is high enough to explain the massive elliptical galaxies. The existence of massive (1011 solar masses) elliptical galaxies by redshift z ≈ 4 (refs 1, 2, 3; when the Universe was 1.5 billion years old) necessitates the presence of galaxies with star-formation rates exceeding 100 solar masses per year at z > 6 (corresponding to an age of the Universe of less than 1 billion years). Surveys have discovered hundreds of galaxies at these early cosmic epochs, but their star-formation rates are more than an order of magnitude lower4. The only known galaxies with very high star-formation rates at z > 6 are, with one exception5, the host galaxies of quasars6,7,8,9, but these galaxies also host accreting supermassive (more than 109 solar masses) black holes, which probably affect the properties of the galaxies. Here we report observations of an emission line of singly ionized carbon ([C ii] at a wavelength of 158 micrometres) in four galaxies at z > 6 that are companions of quasars, with velocity offsets of less than 600 kilometres per second and linear offsets of less than 100 kiloparsecs. The discovery of these four galaxies was serendipitous; they are close to their companion quasars and appear bright in the far-infrared. On the basis of the [C ii] measurements, we estimate star-formation rates in the companions of more than 100 solar masses per year. These sources are similar to the host galaxies of the quasars in [C ii] brightness, linewidth and implied dynamical mass, but do not show evidence for accreting supermassive black holes. Similar systems have previously been found at lower redshift10,11,12. We find such close companions in four out of the twenty-five z > 6 quasars surveyed, a fraction that needs to be accounted for in simulations13,14. If they are representative of the bright end of the [C ii] luminosity function, then they can account for the population of massive elliptical galaxies at z ≈ 4 in terms of the density of cosmic space.

Abstract:We investigate how the shape of the galaxy two-point correlation function as measured in the zCOSMOS survey depends on local environment, quantified in terms of the density contrast on scales of 5 h(-1) Mpc. We show that the flat shape previously observed at redshifts between z = 0.6 and 1 can be explained by this volume being simply 10 per cent overabundant in high-density environments, with respect to a universal density probability distribution function. When galaxies corresponding to the top 10 per cent tail of the distribution are excluded, the measured w(P)(r(P)) steepens and becomes indistinguishable from Lambda cold dark matter (Lambda CDM) predictions on all scales. This is the same effect recognized by Abbas & Sheth in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data at z similar or equal to 0 and explained as a natural consequence of halo-environment correlations in a hierarchical scenario. Galaxies living in high-density regions trace dark matter haloes with typically higher masses, which are more correlated. If the density probability distribution function of the sample is particularly rich in high-density regions because of the variance introduced by its finite size, this produces a distorted two-point correlation function. We argue that this is the dominant effect responsible for the observed 'peculiar' clustering in the COSMOS field.

Abstract:The distribution of Lα absorption lines has been investigated in the fractal scheme. It is found that (1) the Lα absorption clouds distribute completely different from that of galaxies; (2) the Lα absorption clouds are anti-associated with galaxies and quasars. These results may imply that there are two kinds of objects formed by different processes of clustering. This is favourable for the cosmic-string theory on the formation of large-scale structure of the Universe. In the string model, the objects can be divided into two kinds according to their clustering with or without string loops as their initial density perturbation.

A unified model for the clustering of quasars and galaxies at $z\approx6$

Abstract:Recent observations from the EIGER JWST program have measured for the first time the quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function at $z\approx6$. The auto-correlation function of faint $z\approx6$ quasars was also recently estimated. These measurements provide key insights into the properties of quasars and galaxies at high redshift and their relation with the host dark matter halos. In this work, we interpret these data building upon an empirical quasar population model that has been applied successfully to quasar clustering and demographic measurements at $z\approx2-4$. We make use of a new, large-volume N-body simulation with more than a trillion particles, FLAMINGO-10k, to model quasars and galaxies simultaneously. We successfully reproduce observations of $z\approx6$ quasars and galaxies (i.e., their clustering properties and luminosity functions), and infer key quantities such as their luminosity-halo mass relation, the mass function of their host halos, and their duty cycle/occupation fraction. Our key findings are: (i) quasars reside on average in $\approx10^{12.5}\,{\rm M}_\odot$ halos (corresponding to $\approx5\sigma$ fluctuations in the initial conditions of the linear density field), but the distribution of host halo masses is quite broad; (ii) the duty cycle of (UV-bright) quasar activity is relatively low ($\approx1\%$); (iii) galaxies (that are bright in [OIII]) live in much smaller halos ($\approx10^{10.9}\,{\rm M}_\odot$) and have a larger duty cycle (occupation fraction) of $\approx13\%$. Finally, we focus on the inferred properties of quasars and present a homogeneous analysis of their evolution with redshift. The picture that emerges reveals a strong evolution of the host halo mass and duty cycle of quasars at $z\approx2-6$, and calls for new investigations of the role of quasar activity across cosmic time.

Abstract:The distribution of quasars has become one of the most interesting problems in observational cosmology. This is due mainly to the development of theory of the formation of large scale structure in the universe. In recent years, several scenarios of clustering have been proposed. In the adiabatic case, the clustering process is from larger scales to smaller ones, i.e., the first systems to form out would be on the scale of superclusters, then these systems fragment to form smaller scale systems such as galaxies. In the isothermal case, the clustering is from smaller scales to larger ones, namely, galaxies condense out at first and larger scale systems, such as clusters and superclusters, then form later via hierachical build-up processes. In the universe contain two components, the scenario of clustering might be different from both standard adiabatic and isothermal cases(1). According to this new scenario, there should be two kinds of small scale objects, one is formed due to fragment of larger scale systems, another is formed before large scale systems form.

Abstract:We report the serendipitous discoveries of companion galaxies to two high-redshift quasars. SDSS J025617.7+001904 is a z = 4.79 quasar included in our recent survey of faint quasars in the SDSS Stripe 82 region. The initial MMT slit spectroscopy shows excess Lyα emission extending well beyond the quasar's light profile. Further imaging and spectroscopy with LBT/MODS1 confirms the presence of a bright galaxy (iAB = 23.6) located 2″ (12 kpc projected) from the quasar with strong Lyα emission (EW0 ≈ 100 Å) at the redshift of the quasar, as well as faint continuum. The second quasar, CFHQS J005006.6+344522 (z = 6.25), is included in our recent HST SNAP survey of z ∼ 6 quasars searching for evidence of gravitational lensing. Deep imaging with ACS and WFC3 confirms an optical dropout ∼4.5 mag fainter than the quasar (YAB = 25) at a separation of 0.″9. The red i775 − Y105 color of the galaxy and its proximity to the quasar (5 kpc projected if at the quasar redshift) strongly favor an association with the quasar. Although it is much fainter than the quasar, it is remarkably bright when compared to field galaxies at this redshift, while showing no evidence for lensing. Both systems may represent late-stage mergers of two massive galaxies, with the observed light for one dominated by powerful ongoing star formation and for the other by rapid black hole growth. Observations of close companions are rare; if major mergers are primarily responsible for high-redshift quasar fueling then the phase when progenitor galaxies can be observed as bright companions is relatively short.

Abstract:In this paper a statistical investigation is made on the redshift-magnituderelation for quasars with resolved radio components. The main results are: 1.1. The largest linear distance D between the components is an important parameter which can be used in a “standard candle” classification.2.2. Regression equations among redshift, apparent magnitude and D have been established with high correlation coefficients and consequently, the redshifts of these quasars are likely to be cosmological in the main.3.3. The redshift-distance relation was found expressible in the form r ∞ z − 0.19z2, which departs markedly from Hubble's linear relation when z > 1.4.4. The new redshift-distance relation also gives a tighter redshift-magnitude relation for the radio galaxies than Hubble's relation does.5.5. The optical luminosity of a quasar is the smaller, the larger its value of D.
