Abstract:Using the quasar sample from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (Foltz et al. 1987) and galaxies of the Virgo cluster from the BST catalog (Binggeli et al. 1985), we make use of the cross-correlation function and find significant evidence for an association between quasars and galaxies in the angular distance range 5' < theta < 40'.

Abstract:Association between quasars and galaxies is examined using the two-point correlation function for the quasar sample in the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the Binggeli-Sandage-Tammann galaxy catalog of the Virgo cluster. Statistically significant association is found at angular separations between 5′ and 40′ for the member galaxies of the Virgo cluster, but not for the background galaxies. Relation of the association and the apparent magnitude of the objects is also examined.

Abstract:The question of the association of quasars with galaxies is re-examined using 785 quasars at |b| ⩾ 30, δ ⩾ − 02°30′ in the new Hewitt and Burbidge Catalog (1980) and all galaxies in the “Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies” (Nilson, 1973). The results of the two-point cross-correlation function are presented and they show that there are on the average 0.153 ± 0.011 more galaxies within 10'.0 of a QSO than would be expected if the QSOs were distributed randomly. We find the marginal significance of the tendency for correlation between QSOs and galaxies to increase with increasing redshifts z or apparent magnitudes V. The nearest neighbor test has also been taken to analyse the same data as well as get further evidence for the apparent association between QSOs and galaxies.

Abstract The association between quasars and galaxies of different morphological type is examined by applying the cross-correlation function techniques used by Seldner and Pebbles (1979) to a complete catalogue of galaxies. The two-point cross-correlation function technique is first presented and used to analyze all types of galaxies in the Uppsala catalogue. Galaxies are then divided into three broad classifications - sprial, lenticular, and elliptical - and the statistical significance of associations with quasars for these morphological types is examined. The study convincingly indicates a high statistical significance for the sample, with on the average 0.153 + or -0.011 more galaxies within 10.0 arcmin of a quasar than would be expected if the quasars were randomly located. No significant differences are found among the three morphological types of galaxies studied. Abstract:We investigate the spatial clustering of galaxies around quasars at redshifts from 0.6 to 1.2 using the photometric data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. The quasar and galaxy cross-correlation functions are measured through the projected galaxy number density n(r_p) on scales $0.05<r_p<20 h^-1 Mpc around quasars for a sample of 2300 quasars from Schneider et al. (2007). We detect strong clustering signals at all redshifts, and find that the clustering amplitude increases significantly with redshift. We examine the dependence of the quasar-galaxy clustering on quasar and galaxy properties and find that the clustering amplitude is significantly larger for quasars with more massive black holes, or with bluer colors, while the dependence on quasar luminosity is absent. We also show that quasars have a stronger correlation amplitude with blue galaxies than with red galaxies. We finally discuss the implication of our finding.

Abstract:We discuss the changes in the amplitude of the correlation function of quasar clustering with the redshift. Using the new Hewitt-Burbidge QSO catalogue, we find from a statistical analysis of the quasar pairs that the positive results of quasar clustering are mainly contributed by low-redshift quasars. There is an obvious change in the quasar distribution at z = 2. There is no clustering for z > 2. The difference in clustering is not due to any selection effect on the brightness. The evidence is that quasar clustering evolved with cosmological time.

Abstract:QUASARS are the most luminous objects in the Universe. It has been speculated that they are the visible evidence for accretion of gas onto supermassive black holes that reside at the centres of host galaxies. Direct observational confirmation that quasars reside in the centres of galaxies has been hard to obtain, because atmospheric turbulence usually scatters the quasar light sufficiently to swamp the signal from the fainter surrounding galaxy. Despite the difficulties, however, many attempts have been made to observe the host galaxies1–17, although the results have not been definitive18. Here we report observations of four quasars, made with the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope. In all four cases the quasars reside in luminous elliptical galaxies with very close companions. This is in contrast to recent work19,20in which host galaxies were not observed (in a sample of quasars that has one in common with ours). The elliptical galaxies are featureless, but the presence of close companions is suggestive of continuing interactions.

Abstract:We cross-correlate a low-contamination subset of the VST ATLAS g < 22.5 quasar catalogue with g < 21.5 galaxy clusters, r < 21 galaxies and r < 19.5 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) to probe their halo mass profiles via quasar magnification bias caused by weak lensing. In the case of galaxy clusters we find that at small scales their mass profiles are well fitted by Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) models with masses within the expected range. For the galaxies, we find consistency with previous SDSS-based results for the galaxy-quasar cross-correlation and the galaxy auto-correlation functions. Disagreement as to whether the cross-correlation results are in tension with $\Lambda$CDM appears due to different assumptions as to whether galaxies trace mass. We conclude that halo occupation distribution (HOD) models fit the galaxy - quasar lensing results better than models where galaxies trace the mass. We further test the cluster and galaxy HOD models in the 2-halo range using the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing map, finding that the cross-correlation with both the poorest clusters and the galaxies may be marginally over-predicted by the above HOD models. Finally, we measure the magnification bias of LRGs using both quasar and CMB lensing and find that the observed quasar lensing amplitude may be $\approx 2\times$ too high and, on larger scales, the CMB lensing amplitude may be too low to be explained by a standard LRG HOD model.

Quasars Around The Seyfert Galaxy Ngc 3516

Abstract:We report redshift measurements of five X-ray-emitting blue stellar objects located less than 12' from the X-ray Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. We find these quasars to be distributed along the minor axis of the galaxy and to show a very good correlation between their redshift and their angular distance from NGC 3516. Moreover, the redshifts of these five quasars are 0.33, 0.69, 0.93, 1.40, and 2.10, which are very near the peaks of the redshift periodicity distribution (i.e., z = 0.3, 0.6, 0.96, 1.41, and 1.96). All these observed properties strikingly confirm, around this single example of a Seyfert, the composite picture derived from previous physical associations of quasars with low-redshift active galaxies.

Abstract:By means of two-point correlation function, clustering analysis (precolation method) and multiplicity funciton, we analyse the clustering of quasars for two samples of quasar candidates, and find that there is no obvious difference between the results of the observed and Monte-Carlo samples, apart from a weak clustering on the scale of 100 Mpc in the former.

Abstract:We aim to provide a quasar sample that is more complete than any previous surveys by using a combined selection technique to reduce the selection effects. Here we present the observational results for the X-ray candidates in the field of the Leo Cluster. We found 33 X-ray AGNs in this field of which 10 are new discoveries. The X-ray data and optical spectra of these AGNs are given. We also study the near-IR properties of the X-ray-selected AGNs by using the data from 2MASS. Most of the AGNs in our sample span the color range 0.0 < B - J < 2.5, 1.0 < J - K-s < 2.0 and 0.5 < H - K-s < 1.2.

Abstract:We exploit the VST ATLAS quasar/QSO catalogue to perform three measurements of the quasar halo mass profile. First, we make a new estimate of the angular auto-correlation function of $\approx230,000$ ATLAS quasars with $z_{photo}\lesssim 2.5$ and $17<g<22$. By comparing with the $\Lambda$CDM mass clustering correlation function, we measure the quasar bias to be $b_Q\approx2.1$, implying a quasar halo mass of $M_{halo}\approx8.5\times10^{11}$h$^{-1} M_\odot$. Second, we cross-correlate these $z\approx1.7$ ATLAS quasars with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing maps, detecting a somewhat stronger signal at $4'<\theta<60'$ than previous authors. Scaling these authors' model fit to our data we estimate a quasar host halo mass of $M_{halo}\approx8.3\times10^{11}h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$. Third, we fit Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model parameters to our quasar auto-correlation function and from the derived halo mass function we estimate a quasar halo mass of $M_{halo}\approx2.5\times10^{12}$h$^{-1} M_\odot$. We then compare our HOD model prediction to our quasar-CMB lensing result, confirming their consistency. We find that most ($\approx2/3$) QSOs have halo masses within a factor of $\approx3$ of this average mass. An analysis based on the probability of X-ray detections of AGN in galaxies and the galaxy stellar mass function gives a similarly small mass range. Finally, we compare the quasar halo mass and luminosity functions and suggest that gravitational growth may produce the constant space density with redshift seen in the quasar luminosity function.

Abstract:We study the azimuthal distribution of globular clusters (GCs) in early-type galaxies and compare them to their host galaxies using data from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. We find that in host galaxies with visible elongation (epsilon > 0.2) and intermediate to high luminosities (M-z < -19), the GCs are preferentially aligned along the major axis of the stellar light. The red (metal-rich) GC subpopulations show strong alignment with the major axis of the host galaxy, which supports the notion that these GCs are associated with metal-rich field stars. The metal-rich GCs in lenticular galaxies show signs of being more strongly associated with disks rather than bulges. Surprisingly, we also find that the blue (metal-poor) GCs can also show the same correlation. If the metal-poor GCs are part of the early formation of the halo and built up through mergers, then our results support a picture where halo formation and merging occur anisotropically, and that the present-day major axis is an indicator of the preferred merging axis.

Abstract:We present the first cross-correlation measurement between Sloan Digital Sky Survey type 1 quasars and the cosmic infrared background (CIB) measured by Herschel. The quasars cover the redshift range 0.15 < z < 3.5 where most of the CIB originates. We detect the sub-millimetre emission of the quasars, which dominates on small scales, and correlated emission from dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) dominant on larger scales. The mean flux of the Data Release 7 (DR7) quasars (median redshift < z > = 1.4) is 11.1, 7.1 and 3.6 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 mu m, respectively, while the mean flux of the DR9 quasars (< z > = 2.5) is 5.7, 5.0 and 1.8 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 mu m, respectively. Assuming a modified blackbody spectral energy distribution with a power law in the mid-infrared, we infer that the mean infrared luminosity of the DR7 and DR9 quasars is 10(12.4) and 10(12.8) L-circle dot, respectively. The correlated emission arises from DSFGs in the same halo as the quasar (the one-halo term) and DSFGs in separate haloes correlated with the quasar-hosting halo (the two-halo term). Using a simple halo model, we find that most quasars are hosted by central galaxies. The host halo mass scale of the DR7 central and satellite quasars is 10(12.4 +/- 0.9) and 10(13.6 +/- 0.4) M-circle dot, respectively. The host halo mass scale of the DR9 central and satellite quasars is 10(12.3 +/- 0.6) and 10(12.8 +/- 0.4) M-circle dot, respectively. Thus, the halo environment of the central quasars is similar to that of the most actively star-forming galaxies, which supports the view that dusty starburst and quasar activity are evolutionarily linked.
Herschel Observed Stripe 82 Quasars and Their Host Galaxies: Connections Between Agn Activity and Host Galaxy Star Formation

Abstract:In this work, we present a study of 207 quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogs and the Herschel Stripe 82 survey. Quasars within this sample are high-luminosity quasars with a mean bolometric luminosity of 1046.4 erg s−1. The redshift range of this sample is within z < 4, with a mean value of 1.5 ± 0.78. Because we only selected quasars that have been detected in all three Herschel-SPIRE bands, the quasar sample is complete yet highly biased. Based on the multi-wavelength photometric observation data, we conducted a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting through UV to FIR. Parameters such as active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity, far-IR (FIR) luminosity, stellar mass, as well as many other AGN and galaxy properties are deduced from the SED fitting results. The mean star formation rate (SFR) of the sample is 419 M⊙ yr−1 and the mean gas mass is ∼1011.3 M⊙. All of these results point to an IR luminous quasar system. Compared with star formation main sequence (MS) galaxies, at least 80 out of 207 quasars are hosted by starburst galaxies. This supports the statement that luminous AGNs are more likely to be associated with major mergers. The SFR increases with the redshift up to z = 2. It is correlated with the AGN bolometric luminosity, where . The AGN bolometric luminosity is also correlated with the host galaxy mass and gas mass. Yet the correlation between LFIR and LBol has higher significant level, implies that the link between AGN accretion and the SFR is more primal. The MBH/M* ratio of our sample is 0.02, higher than the value 0.005 in the local universe. It might indicate an evolutionary trend of the MBH–M* scaling relation.

Abstract:We present results from the ``Quasar hosts Unveiled by high Angular Resolution Techniques" (QUART) survey studying the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) by observing rest-frame UV emission lines Ly$\alpha$, C IV and He II around two radio-loud quasars, 3C 9 (z=2.02) and 4C 05.84 (z=2.32), using Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We detect large-scale Ly$\alpha$ nebulae around both quasars with projected diameters $\sim$ 100 kpc, with spatially resolved, embedded 15-30 kpc He II and C IV nebulae around both quasars as well as kinematically distinct He II and C IV nebulae at a physical separation of $\sim$ 15 kpc from both quasars. Observations of H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and [O III] emission using Keck MOSFIRE spectroscopically confirm that the Ly$\alpha$ nebulae extend to companion galaxies and that these quasars are in a protogroup/protocluster environment. We confirm that the He II and C IV emission is kinematically and spatially coincident with the companion galaxies. We estimate the virial masses of the companion galaxies, their metallicities, and star formation rates, and investigate the sources of ionization. We measure the dynamical mass of the host dark matter halos and estimate that the dark matter halos of these systems will grow to a mass of 2 $\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ (3C 9) and 2 $\times 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$ (4C 05.84) by z=0. The combined CGM and companion galaxies observations indicate Ly$\alpha$ substructure can indicate the presence of companion galaxies in the CGM.
