Abstract:A warm-white emitting persistent luminescence phosphor Lu3Al2Ga3O12:Pr3+ was synthesized by solid state method at 1600 °C in air. The refined crystal structure of Lu3Al2Ga3O12 host was solved by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photoluminescence spectra, decay curve and thermoluminescence were investigated. It was revealed that the persistent luminescence originated from the f-f transitions of Pr3+ emitters at Lu3+ sites in LuO8 polyhedrons, and it showed white color due to the 3P0→3H4, 3P1→3H5, 3P0→3H5, 3P0→3H6, 3P0→3F2, 3P0→3F3 and 3P0→3F4 transitions of Pr3+ emitters in a wide range. The persistent luminescence of Pr3+ in this host could be promoted by f-d transition (278 nm) but f-f transitions, due to the different thermal activation energy. The persistent luminescence of the optimal sample could be actually recorded for 3 h by the definition of 0.32 mcd/m2 and was visible for more than 7 h by dark-adapted vision in darkness. The initial depth of the dominant shallow traps was calculated to be about 0.56 eV, which is suitable for persistent luminescence. The different roles of the shallow and deep traps on the persistent decay process were investigated. Accordingly, the persistent luminescence processes and mechanism of the as-synthesized Lu3Al2Ga3O12:Pr3+ phosphors were proposed.

Abstract:An excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphor NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ has been synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction. By controlling the occupation sites of Mn2+ emitters, the PersL color of this phosphor can be optionally tuned in the red to green-yellow region, and the maximum spectral shift is more than 50 nm. Significantly, the red PersL can be measured for approximately 13 and 3 h (0.32 mcd/m2) and can be observed for more than 20 and 5 h with dark-adapted vision after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and artificial sunlight, respectively. The crystal/electronic structure and photoluminescence/PersL properties of this phosphor have been investigated in detail. A series of the excitation temperature-dependent thermoluminescence experiments and the initial rising method have been conducted to study the trap properties of this phosphor. It reveals the reasons for the variation of PersL color, excellent red PersL, and degradation of green-yellow PersL. According to the results, the as-prepared NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ can be considered as an excellent red PersL phosphor, and it also has potential for application in optical storage.

Abstract:Persistent luminescence (PersL) has drawn intense attention because of its widely practical applications. Dynamic color-tunable PersL is desired and fascinating for advanced anti-counterfeiting, information storage, etc. However, it is difficult to obtain and rarely reported. Herein, a simple and effective method by using coordination polymers (CPs) as precursors is designed for color-tunable zinc-cadmium silicate composites PersL phosphors. Compared with pure Zn 2 SiO 4 (ZSO) and CdSiO 3 (CSO), the composites (ZSO/CSO) exhibit significantly improved brightness and dynamic tunable color. With time evolution, the color varied from white to yellow to orange and finally even to red. Notably, the duration time of 1.0 % Dy 3+ doped ZSO/CSO is prolonged to 19000 s (>5 h) at the threshold value (0.32 mcd/m 2 ) after 254 nm irradiation, showing a more than 100-fold enhancement compared with CSO. In attempt to achieve a better understanding of the enhanced mechanisms, the formation energy of Dy 3+ and O-vacancy are accurately derived from first-principles calculations. Combined with thermoluminescence (TL) measurement, the PersL mechanism is proposed. Finally, the application of ZSO/CSO:1.0 % Dy 3+ in displaying and anti-counterfeiting was explored. This work not only provides a new way to the design of PersL phosphors through composite compounds, but also promotes the development of PersL phosphors in practical applications.

Considering Mn2+ substitution for Al3+, quadrivalence ions including Zr4+, Ge4+ and Si4+ ions are introduced to balance the charge difference. Abstract:Multicolor tuning of persistent luminescence has been extensively studied by deliberately integrating various luminescent units, known as activators or chromophores, into certain host compounds. However, it remains a formidable challenge to fine-tune the persistent luminescence spectra either in organic materials, such as small molecules, polymers, metal-organic complexes and carbon dots, or in doped inorganic crystals. Herein, we present a strategy to delicately control the persistent luminescence wavelength by engineering sub-bandgap donor-acceptor states in a series of single-phase Ca(Sr)ZnOS crystals. The persistent luminescence emission peak can be quasi-linearly tuned across a broad wavelength range (500-630 nm) as a function of Sr/Ca ratio, achieving a precision down to ~5 nm. Theoretical calculations reveal that the persistent luminescence wavelength fine-tuning stems from constantly lowered donor levels accompanying the modified band structure by Sr alloying. Besides, our experimental results show that these crystals exhibit a high initial luminance of 5.36 cd m-2 at 5 sec after charging and a maximum persistent luminescence duration of 6 h. The superior, color-tunable persistent luminescence enables a rapid, programable patterning technique for high-throughput optical encryption.

Abstract:Persistent luminescence (PerL) phosphors have been widely applied in many advanced applications in the field of emergency lighting, safety signage, and ornaments. Recently, the PerL phosphors based on germanates have attracted great attention owing to their excellent PerL performance. However, the design and development of excellent germanates-based PerL materials with full spectral emissions remain challenging due to the lack of color-tunable PerL, especially in the blue and green regions (400–600 nm). Herein, we develop a new type of Tb3+-activated LiYGeO4 PerL phosphor with real-time adjusting the photoluminescence (PL) and PerL color, which can be effectively excited by a 254 UV light. Both blue and green PerL are realized simultaneously in a single phosphor. When LiYGeO4:Tb3+ doped with lower concentrations of Tb3+ ions, phosphors emit blue PL and PerL. With increasing Tb3+ concentration, the PL and PerL colors of LiYGeO4:Tb3+ PerL phosphor are gradually regulated from blue to green. Besides, LiYGeO4:Tb3+ exhibits temperature-dependent luminescence property, whose PL and PerL colors can also be successively widely tuned by various temperature. This stable and tunable color in real-time PL and PerL property promote the as-designed LiYGeO4:Tb3+ phosphor to have potential applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and display devices.

Abstract:In this paper, the luminescence properties of the long persistent phosphor (LPP) were apparently improved by combining with photonic crystal (PC). An optimized PC can double the afterglow intensity and prolong 1.7 times of the afterglow time of SrAl2O4: Eu, a commercially available LPP, without any dopants. These results were ascribed to the stopband effect of the PC. The PC combined LPP structure was beneficial for the applications of LPP in emergency indication which called for brighter afterglow intensity and longer afterglow time.

Abstract:Abstract Organic persistent luminescent materials attract great attention, but most of them exhibit single luminescence color with one emission band, which limits their applications in optoelectronic, sensing, and bioimaging fields. Herein, an effective strategy to achieve dual persistent emission is proposed by utilizing the triplet excited state in the single‐molecule 6,12‐diphenyl‐5,6,11,12‐tetrahydroindolo[3,2‐b]carbazole derivatives. Experimental data and theoretical calculations suggest that the triplet excited state operates as a triplet exciton reservoir to stockpile and provide long‐lived excitons for room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in aggregate state. Moreover, tunable emission color is achieved through the regulation of RTP and TADF emission by introducing aromatic and aliphatic bromine atoms. Finally, dual persistent emission with a long lifetime of 0.26 s and a persistent luminescence quantum yield of 10% is obtained in single‐component materials, and these luminophores are used for visual temperature detection and anti‐counterfeiting.

Abstract:Abstract The manipulation of excitation modes and resultant emission colors in luminescent materials holds pivotal importance for encrypting information in anti-counterfeiting applications. Despite considerable achievements in multimodal and multicolor luminescent materials, existing options generally suffer from static monocolor emission under fixed external stimulation, rendering them vulnerability to replication. Achieving dynamic multimodal luminescence within a single material presents a promising yet challenging solution. Here, we report the development of a phosphor exhibiting dynamic multicolor photoluminescence (PL) and photo-thermo-mechanically responsive multimodal emissions through the incorporation of trace Mn 2+ ions into a self-activated CaGa 4 O 7 host. The resulting phosphor offers adjustable emission-color changing rates, controllable via re-excitation intervals and photoexcitation powers. Additionally, it demonstrates temperature-induced color reversal and anti-thermal-quenched emission, alongside reproducible elastic mechanoluminescence (ML) characterized by high mechanical durability. Theoretical calculations elucidate electron transfer pathways dominated by intrinsic interstitial defects and vacancies for dynamic multicolor emission. Mn 2+ dopants serve a dual role in stabilizing nearby defects and introducing additional defect levels, enabling flexible multi-responsive luminescence. This developed phosphor facilitates evolutionary color/pattern displays in both temporal and spatial dimensions using readily available tools, offering significant promise for dynamic anticounterfeiting displays and multimode sensing applications.

Abstract:Eu2+-doped CaAlSiN3-type structure nitrides have been extensively studied as a red-emitting phosphors in white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs), but there are few reports of systematic research on the effect of solid solution substitution on their long persistent luminescent properties. In this work, a series of (M,Ca)AlSiN3:Eu2+ (M = Sr, Mg) phosphors have been successfully synthesized by efficient combustion synthesis. We investigated the effect of Sr and Mg solid solution on long persistent luminescent properties. Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements were performed in those persistent phosphors to obtain direct experimental results on the trap depth. The results show that the SrAlSiN3:0.2 at% Eu2+ phosphor exhibits the most intense red persistent luminescence with the persistent time of as long as 200 min at the threshold value of 0.32 mcd/m(2) due to the presence of more trap levels with suitable depths of 0.71 eV. Compared with the solid solution of Sr, the solid solution of Mg ions can increase the depth of trap levels in CaAlSiN3. Among them, Mg0.2Ca0.8AlSiN3:0.2 at% Eu2+ phosphor achieved a maximum trap depth of 0.98 eV, making it a promising candidate for optical information storage applications.

Abstract:We report on the persistent luminescence of SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Cr3+ phosphor centered at 760 nm. The phosphor was prepared by sol-gel-combustion method. Persistent luminescence from Cr3+ lasted for hundreds of seconds, comparable to the long afterglow from Eu2+ ions in the visible region based on the continuous energy transfer from Eu2+ ions to Cr3+ ions. The introduction of Dy3+ ions into the phosphor further prolonged the afterglow time of Eu2+ and Cr3+ ions through the depth control of the charge traps. The optimum doping concentrations for Eu2+, Cr3+ and Dy3+ were 1%, 2% and 1.5%, respectively. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
