Abstract:An excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphor NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ has been synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction. By controlling the occupation sites of Mn2+ emitters, the PersL color of this phosphor can be optionally tuned in the red to green-yellow region, and the maximum spectral shift is more than 50 nm. Significantly, the red PersL can be measured for approximately 13 and 3 h (0.32 mcd/m2) and can be observed for more than 20 and 5 h with dark-adapted vision after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and artificial sunlight, respectively. The crystal/electronic structure and photoluminescence/PersL properties of this phosphor have been investigated in detail. A series of the excitation temperature-dependent thermoluminescence experiments and the initial rising method have been conducted to study the trap properties of this phosphor. It reveals the reasons for the variation of PersL color, excellent red PersL, and degradation of green-yellow PersL. According to the results, the as-prepared NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ can be considered as an excellent red PersL phosphor, and it also has potential for application in optical storage.

Abstract:Persistent luminescence phosphors have attracted much attention in the realm of anti-counterfeiting pattern and information storage, because of their characteristic properties of optical information storage, long persistent luminescence, and simplicity of design. At present, traditional anti-counterfeiting persistent luminescence phosphors are based on single-colour luminescence, which generally have poor security of anti-counterfeiting capabilities. In this work, the phosphors Ca1-1/2xCd1-1/2xGe7O16:xSm3+ (x = 0, 0.0025, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015, 0.02, and 0.025) were synthesized by using a high temperature solid-state reaction method, which gain multi-colour and two-mode anti-counterfeiting persistent luminescent materials. With the increase doping concentration of Sm3+ ion in the host, the luminescence could emit from blue to pink photoluminescence under 254 nm UV lamp illumination. After excitation of the 254 nm UV lamp, the sample showed persistent luminescence performance with a pink persistent luminescence color, and the duration could exceed 4 h. The persistent luminescence mechanism and electron traps inside the samples were analyzed by thermoluminescence curves after excitation cessation. That result shown that the Ca1-1/2xCd1-1/2xGe7O16:0.01Sm3+ phosphors exist at least two types of traps. The phosphors were used to synthesize anti-counterfeiting ink, and made the optical anti-counterfeiting pattern through screen printing technology. The pattern is barely to be observed on white paper in sunlight, but can displayed in different colors under irradiation of 254 nm and low light environment. The results shown that produced phosphors contribute to the high level of application potential for enhanced optical anti-counterfeiting applications and information storage.

Abstract:The multicolor photoluminescence (PL) of a Tb3+ singly activated NaYGeO4 phosphor is presented by solid state method. For the first time, it is reported that the PL color of Tb3+ in NaYGeO4 phosphor can be tuned from green to blue and, finally, to red by controlling the Tb3+ content. The optimal tricolor phosphors are NaYGeO4:0.01mol% Tb3+ (red), NaYGeO4:0.5mol% Tb3+ (blue) and NaYGeO4:5mol% Tb3+ (green), respectively. The PL properties of the NaYGeO4: Tb3+ phosphor were studied in details. The results reveal that the PL color modulations of the NaYGeO4:Tb3+ phosphor are essentially due to the cross-relaxation effect of Tb3+, and a possible mechanism on the cross-relaxation is proposed. According to these unique features, a multicolor PL image is fabricated based on the NaYGeO4: Tb3+ phosphor for potential applications in luminescent anticounterfeiting.A multicolor photoluminescent NaYGeO4:Tb3+ phosphor was developed and studied. Abstract:Fluorescent materials have gradually become a hot spot in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Multifunctional phosphors used in anti-counterfeiting designs still have the problems of disordered reading sequences, difficulty in detection, and easy forging. To resolve these problems, we propose a new flexible dual-mode anti-counterfeiting design using a series of phosphors Ca3Al2Ge3O12:Cr3+ (CAG) with deep red persistent luminescence peaking at 722 nm. By adjusting the doping concentration of Cr3+ from 2% to 6%, deep red persistent luminescence with different afterglow intensities and durations can be achieved. By performing a series of thermoluminescence (TL) experiments under different conditions, the defects in materials were comprehensively and systematically analyzed. The defects contributed to the deep and shallow traps; this led to an obvious improvement in its long persistent luminescence (LPL). Such a dual-mode system with flexibility and simplicity properties is a good choice not only for anti-counterfeiting, but also for multi-layer information encryption, and a series of demo experiments based on the digital tube, Moss code, QR code, bar-code, school celebration pattern, and love letter information encryption design were implemented. Their dynamic anti-counterfeiting applications have been demonstrated, which provides a new way to rationally design multi-functional luminescent materials.

Abstract:Rare earth-doped persistent luminescent (PersL) phosphors are excellent candidates for anticounterfeiting due to their superior properties, including various luminescent colors, multifarious luminescent modes, and dynamic emission intensity. For classical PersL phosphors, single-doped phosphor always shows monotonous luminescent color in different emission modes, such as photoluminescence (PL) and PersL, which limits the anticounterfeiting level to a low degree. To optimize the optical properties of phosphors for anticounterfeiting applications, constructing multiactivator-doped phosphors with polychromatic luminescence emissions can be a feasible strategy in practical material development. In this study, a novel multicolor PersL material, Pr3+/Tb3+-doped LiTa3O8, was reported for the first time, where the PersL color of Pr3+ in LiTa3O8 host was red whereas terbium(III) (Tb3+) ions exhibited green PersL color. Two improvement strategies were implemented, including substitution of tin(IV) (Sn4+) and codoping with gadolinium(III) (Gd3+), to enhance PersL properties by regulating distribution of traps. Gd3+ codoping strategy effectively improved PersL intensity while the Sn substitution strategy increased the initial PersL intensity by four-fold and the duration prolonged by 2.5-fold. Based on the results of luminescent properties, a multicolor tunable PersL material, LiTa3O8:0.7 %Pr3+ 1 % Tb3+, was synthesized and conceptually designed into a multimode anticounterfeiting application. Based on this scheme, prototype anticounterfeiting devices were developed, which could display the anticounterfeiting patterns in both dynamic and static states. Thus, this study fabricated a novel PersL material with multicolor light in different luminescent modes, thus deepening the fundamental understanding of PersL materials and diversifying the potential candidates of optical anticounterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Optical characteristics of phosphors, e.g. color output, decay process and external field stimulation mode (including opto-, thermo- and mechano-stimulation), play an important role in the areas of information storage, anti-counterfeiting and bio-imaging applications. Persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphors are particularly suitable for such applications owing to their multimodal luminescence features such as photoluminescence (PL), PersL, photostimulated luminescence and mechanoluminescence. However, conventional PersL phosphors are suffering from a huge challenge to develop a single material for multicolor anti-counterfeiting. Herein, the Zn1+xGa2−2xGexO4:Mn (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution phosphors are synthesized, which can emit from green to yellow, golden, pink, and red PL. In addition, the phosphors also show the thermo-mechano-opto-stimulated green PersL after irradiation of a UV 254/365 nm lamp. Based on the multimode and multicolor luminescence features, the advanced anti-counterfeiting and optical data storage are designed. Results show that the multimodal luminescence feature with high information capacity can be conveniently identified by using a luggable ultraviolet lamp or NIR laser diode. This extraordinary material will make anti-counterfeiting more sophisticated and show advanced security in the applications of data encryption.

Abstract:Integrating multimode optical properties into a single material simultaneously is promising for improving the security level of fluorescent anticounterfeiting. However, there has been a lack of affirmative principles and unambiguous mechanisms that guide the design of such material. Herein, we achieve color-tunable photoluminescence, long-lived persistent emission, thermally stimulated luminescence, and reversible photochromism in a Tb3+-activated Mg4Ga8Ge2O20 phosphor by employing the F-like color center as an energy reservoir. It is experimentally revealed that the role of oxygen vacancies in the lattice of Mg4Ga8Ge2O20 is assumed as the main trap for the photogenerated electronic carriers, which is the origin of metastable F-like color centers. The formed color centers with the estimated depths of 0.48-0.95 eV could suppress the recombination of electron-hole pairs, thus giving rise to good photochromism and persistent emission properties, while under various modes of stimulation such as thermal attack or photo radiation, a quick recombination of electron holes happens, accounting for the bright thermally stimulated luminescence and the accompanied color bleaching. Finally, we fabricate a flexible phosphor/polymer composite by encapsulating the developed phosphor into a polydimethylsiloxane matrix, and conceptual demonstration of the composite for the high-security fluorescent anticounterfeiting technology, by virtue of multimode optical phenomena as authentication signals.

Abstract:Anti-counterfeiting labels based on luminescence materials are a newly emerging technique for protecting legal goods and intellectual property. In the anti-counterfeiting field to prevent forgery and cloning, luminescence materials with properties different from the commercialized and traditional ones are in urgent need. In this work, multicolor-emitting Er3+ single-doped and Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Zn2GeO4 phosphors combining static and dynamic identifications were developed in order to achieve advanced anti-counterfeiting application. The variation of trap content with increasing the doping content of rare earth ions was analyzed through X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermoluminescence analysis. It was found that there are two types of traps with different depth in Zn2GeO4 phosphors. The depths of the traps were experimentally confirmed to be 0.68 and 0.79 eV, respectively. The transient photocurrent response measurement confirmed the existence of charge carriers, and the mechanism for long persistent luminescence was deduced. The multicolor upconversion mechanisms under 980 and 1550 nm excitation were also discovered. Based on the multicolor steady and transient emission features, an anti-counterfeiting pattern was designed using the phosphors. Static and dynamic identification was demonstrated and presented in detail. Finally, it is indicated that the studied phosphors are excellent candidates for potential applications in luminescence anti-counterfeiting labels.
Multimodal dynamic luminescence of self-activated Na2CaGe2O6 phosphor via defect manipulation

Abstract:Anti-counterfeiting using multiple optical output modes has drawn considerable attention for enhancing anti-fake measures. Herein, a multimodal dynamic optical information coding from the self-activated Na 2 CaGe 2 O 6 phosphor is developed. Na 2 CaGe 2 O 6 phosphor exhibits two distinct emission bands associated with the intrinsic defects of oxygen vacancies () and inverse-site defects (). The incorporation of Bi 3+ ions results in an increased concentration of defects, which in turn facilitates the modulation of the corresponding photoluminescence color from purple to red with prolonged ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Moreover, the recovery of the corresponding emission color is observed for thermal disturbance. Besides, an improved optical storage behavior as the long persistent and photo-stimulated luminescence is achieved for the incorporation of Bi 3+ ions. Consequently, a multimode dynamic color-changing code is constructed using screen-printing technology, offering an alternative approach for advanced anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Traditional anti‐counterfeiting luminescent phosphors are usually composed of single‐mode photoluminescence materials, which greatly limits the security of encryption by its static fluorescent pattern. Herein, multi‐mode luminescence properties are achieved including fluorescence and persistent luminescence (PersL) within single host by co‐doping Bi3+ and Eu3+ in CaNaSb2O6F (CNSOF). A tunable emission is observed from blue (Bi3+, 3P1→1S0) to white and then to orange‐yellow (Eu3+, 5D1→7F2 and 5D0→7F0, 1, 2, 3, 4) as the excitation schemes, environment temperatures and doping level are modulated. Impressively, the blue emission attributed to the Bi3+ rapidly disappears after stopping the excitation light irradiation, and only the intense orange‐yellow PersL produced by Eu3+ can be observed. And a possible model for the energy transfer and PersL mechanism is proposed by the investigation crystal structure and photoluminescence/PersL. A schematic of security logo and digital information encryption is demonstrated using the prepared samples, which shows the dynamic evolution of the emission color and PersL brightness. The excellent property of multiple color outputs, different decay processes, and external field stimulation modes (including low energy light, thermal, and mechanical stimuli) present in CNSOF:Bi3+, Eu3+ provides a fast, low‐cost, and effective method for advanced anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption applications.

Abstract:Optical materials are widely used in the information coding, display, and anti-counterfeiting fields due to their tunable color. However, the regulation of the color change in a material is mainly achieved by co-doping with different ions to achieve multimode luminescence, which greatly increases the difficulty of material synthesis. Herein, CaF 2 :Eu with different doping amounts of Eu ions as an anti-counterfeiting material is synthesized in one step by a simple high-temperature solid-state method. The concentration of Eu can adjust the reduction ratio of Eu ions and give the material multicolor emission. Moreover, X-ray-induced ion reduction achieves the multicolor emission of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ ions in a single matrix of CaF 2 :Eu. This achieves radio-photo luminescence (RPL). In addition, the mechano-luminescence (ML) of CaF 2 : 0.5%Eu has also been confirmed. These findings provide unique insights into the design of highly integrated advanced anti-counterfeiting technologies using multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

Abstract:In this work, an original color-tunable persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphor based on Pr3+ doped LiTaO3 (LTO) was realized. The PersL emission can be modulated from pale yellow to deep orange-red merely by changing the concentration of Pr3+, which attributed to the concentration quenching resulted from the cross-relaxation (CR) effect. Thermoluminescence (TL) analysis shows that the continuous shallow traps (0.668–0.8 eV) are suitable for PersL. Moreover, it also exhibits excellent photostimulated luminescence (PSL) performance owing to the presence of stable deep traps of 0.916 eV. A possible PersL mechanism of LTO:Pr3+ is put forward to explain this phenomenon. Finally, inspired by this multicolor PersL feature, a quick response code (QR-code) and an arrow pattern are developed, revealing that LTO:Pr3+ is an ideal material for dynamic anti-counterfeiting. Our work is designed to promote the practical applications of PersL materials in information security areas.

Abstract:As the landscape of information storage and security continues to evolve, the deployment of sophisticated anticounterfeiting strategies with robust security features and multimodal luminescent capabilities becomes imperative. In this work, Eu3+ and Er3+ ions are codoped into CaF2 phosphors to achieve multimodel optical output. The self-reduction of Eu3+ within the CaF2 matrix gives rise to the coexistence of Eu3+ and Eu2+ ions, which manifests as a color transition from orange to blue as the excitation wavelength is varied from 300 to 335 nm. Moreover, the distinct temperature-dependent behaviors of Eu3+ and Eu2+ ions underscore the material's visible temperature-sensitive luminescence properties, characterized by remarkable thermal sensitivity (Sa = 0.0156 K-1, Sr = 0.83%K-1). Additionally, the strategic introduction of Er3+ ions adds an extra dimension, enabling the realization of color-tunable upconversion luminescence through the fine-tuning of Er3+ concentration. This synergistic integration culminates in the establishment of an efficient three-path authentication model within the CaF2 host matrix, facilitating a dynamic multicolor response to changes in the excitation wavelength and temperature. By harnessing these diverse luminescent modalities, the study delivers a versatile and potent anticounterfeiting solution, advancing the frontiers of information security.

Abstract:Multi-mode luminescent materials refer to materials that can emit light at different wavelengths or colors depending on the applied stimulus, which could provide enhanced security features and make it more difficult for counterfeiters to reproduce. Here, we report the achievement of multi-color dynamic anti-counterfeiting by using multi-mode luminescence material Ca 3 Ti 2 O 7 :Pr 3+ ,Er 3+ as the luminescent inks. Ca 3 Ti 2 O 7 :Pr 3+ ,Er 3+ exhibits quintuple modes of photoluminescence (PL), long persistent luminescence (LPL), photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL), mechano-luminescence (ML), and up-conversion luminescence (UCL) with rich emission colors. The PL color of the phosphors could be modulated from red to yellow-green when the pump wavelength changes from 254 to 365 nm. Moreover, the tunable color of the phosphors is modulated from yellow to green by prolonging the irradiation time of a 980 nm laser (0.6 W), which is attributed to the elaborate cooperation of the PSL and UCL behaviors. Abstract:Fluorescent anti-counterfeiting materials have been widely studied due to their high resolution and convenient identification by direct visualization of the color output. To date, the anti-counterfeiting technology of single ultraviolet excitation mode still has security problems because the single mode could be imitated easily. Here, we have successfully developed four modes of anti-counterfeiting from Eu2+ and Er3+ co-doped Ba2Zr2Si3O12 phosphors with photo, long persistent, photo-stimulated, and up-conversion luminescence behavior. The as-fabricated phosphors can emit an intense blue-green luminescence originating from the characteristic transition of Eu2+ ions and exhibit a blue-green long persistent luminescence phenomenon. Moreover, the enhancement of photo-stimulated luminescence that contributed to the effectively increased trap concentration is observed, along with the produced up-conversion phenomenon thanks to the introduction of Er3+ ions. Notably, the fluorescence rapidly changes from blue-green to stable green luminescence with the delay of excitation time under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode. Herein, this work realizes the fast down- to up-conversion luminescence output over time, which provides the basis for its possible application in advanced multi-mode anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Persistent luminescence (PerL) phosphors have been widely applied in many advanced applications in the field of emergency lighting, safety signage, and ornaments. Recently, the PerL phosphors based on germanates have attracted great attention owing to their excellent PerL performance. However, the design and development of excellent germanates-based PerL materials with full spectral emissions remain challenging due to the lack of color-tunable PerL, especially in the blue and green regions (400–600 nm). Herein, we develop a new type of Tb3+-activated LiYGeO4 PerL phosphor with real-time adjusting the photoluminescence (PL) and PerL color, which can be effectively excited by a 254 UV light. Both blue and green PerL are realized simultaneously in a single phosphor. When LiYGeO4:Tb3+ doped with lower concentrations of Tb3+ ions, phosphors emit blue PL and PerL. With increasing Tb3+ concentration, the PL and PerL colors of LiYGeO4:Tb3+ PerL phosphor are gradually regulated from blue to green. Besides, LiYGeO4:Tb3+ exhibits temperature-dependent luminescence property, whose PL and PerL colors can also be successively widely tuned by various temperature. This stable and tunable color in real-time PL and PerL property promote the as-designed LiYGeO4:Tb3+ phosphor to have potential applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and display devices.

Abstract:Luminescence color and application environment of anti-counterfeiting materials are closely related to the excitation modes, which play a decisive role in information security. Ca1.997-x Nb2O7:xEr3+/0.003Pr3+ (x = 0.002, 0.006, 0.01, 0.015, 0.02) ferroelectric ceramics have been prepared via traditional solid-state reaction method. Four-modal luminescence comprising color-tunable (red/yellow/green) photoluminescence (PL), up-conversion luminescence (UCL), photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) have been realized in the prepared ceramics. The corresponding mechanisms were also discussed and proposed. PSL using near infrared (NIR) light excitation was first reported in this material. Besides, the as-synthesized phosphors and commercial ZnS:Cu2+ were incorporated into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to fabricate a multifunctional optical device. The obtained device successfully provides multidimensional codes with colorful (red/pink/white/cyan/green/blue) and multimodal (upconverted/downshifted and photon-/thermo-/mechano-drived) emission, showing the promising prospects in optical information storage and anti-counterfeiting.
