Abstract:Recently, PM2.5 (atmospheric fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) have received so much attention that the observations, source appointment and countermeasures of it have been widely studied due to its harmful impacts on visibility, mood (mental health), physical health, traffic safety, construction, economy and nature, as well as its complex interaction with climate. A review on the PM2.5 related research is necessary. We start with summary of chemical composition and characteristics of PM2.5 that contains both macro and micro observation results and analysis, wherein the temporal variability of concentrations of PM2.5 and major components in many recent reports is embraced. This is closely followed by an overview of source appointment, including the composition and sources of PM2.5 in different countries in the six inhabitable continents based on the best available results. Besides summarizing PM2.5 pollution countermeasures by policy, planning, technology and ideology, the World Air Day is proposed to be established to inspire and promote the crucial social action in energy-saving and emission-reduction. Some updated knowledge of the important topics (such as formation and evolution mechanisms of hazes, secondary aerosols, aerosol mass spectrometer, organic tracers, radiocarbon, emissions, solutions for air pollution problems, etc.) is also included in the present review by logically synthesizing the studies. In addition, the key research challenges and future directions are put forward. Despite our efforts, our understanding of the recent reported observations, source identifications and countermeasures of PM2.5 is limited, and subsequent efforts both of the authors and readers are needed.

Abstract:An international specialty conference, jointly sponsored by the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), entitled ''PM10 Standards and Nontraditional Particulate Source Controls,'' was held in Scottsdale, Arizona, January 12-15, 1992. The conference included 92 presentations in 17 technical sessions. Eighty-one peer-reviewed technical papers, two keynote addresses and one panel session summary describing novel applications, measurement processes, modeling techniques and control measures for nontraditional pollution sources are assembled in the Transactions1. The technical issues addressed during the conference included: (1) measurement methods and data bases; (2) emissions source characterization; (3) source apportionment of nontraditional sources; (4) fugitive dust characterization and control technologies; (5) vegetative burning characterization and control technologies; (6) sources and controls of secondary aerosol and motor vehicle precursors; and (7) regulatory policies and State Implementation Plan (SIP) development. This paper gives an overview of the technical program.

Abstract:Recent studies of the size and composition of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) have demonstrated the usefulness of separating atmospheric PM into its fine and coarse components. The need to measure the mass and composition of fine and coarse PM separately has been emphasized by research in exposure, epidemiology, and toxicology of atmospheric PM. This paper provides a background on the size distribution and properties of PM relevant to the differences between fine and coarse particles. Various decisions that must be made when deciding how to separate, collect, and measure PM are discussed. Techniques for monitoring fine and coarse particles, including the US Federal Reference Method for PM2.5 and several techniques for PM10-2.5, are presented. Problems encountered in collecting semivolatile PM and in weighing atmospheric PM collected on a filter are described. Continuous monitoring methods for PM mass and for PM components (carbon, nitrate, and sulfate) are described and brief descriptions are given of analytical techniques for the chemical characterization of collected PM. This information should be especially useful for environmental workers familiar with monitoring methods for total suspended particles or PM10 but who will need to measure PM2, and PM10-2.5 in the future.

Abstract:National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) were first established in the United States to protect public health and welfare, and the concept has been adopted in China and many other countries. For particulate matter (PM), the NAAQS indicator evolved from total particle mass concentration, to PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations as defined by the PM size-selective properties of the monitoring instrument and human inhalation characteristics. Particle measurements started with optical microscopy in the early 18th century, and scientific research over the past 300 years has related particles to adverse environmental and health effects. Several options for PM2.5 measurement and assessment are available to China and other developing countries as they implement new PM2.5 ambient air quality standards. Although much can be learned from the experience of North America and Europe, China can leapfrog ahead in terms of PM2.5 monitoring and emission reduction technology. China-specific guidance documents should be created for network design, equipment selection and operation, quality control and quality assurance, database management, and interpretation. Future air quality management and standards will need to consider multiple pollutants and their effects on visibility, climate, materials, and ecosystems in addition to the primary concerns about public health.

Advances in Integrated and Continuous Measurements for Particle Mass and Chemical Composition

Abstract:Abstract Recent improvements in integrated and continuous PM2.5 mass and chemical measurements from the Supersite program and related studies in the past decade are summarized. Analytical capabilities of the measurement methods, including accuracy, precision, interferences, minimum detectable levels, comparability, and data completeness are documented. Upstream denuders followed by filter packs in integrated samplers allow an estimation of sampling artifacts. Efforts are needed to: (1) address positive and negative artifacts for organic carbon (OC), and (2) develop carbon standards to better separate organic versus elemental carbon (EC) under different temperature settings and analysis atmospheres. Advances in thermal desorption followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) provide organic speciation of approximately 130 nonpolar compounds (e.g., n-alkanes, alkenes, hopanes, steranes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]) using small portions of filters from existing integrated samples. Speciation of water-soluble OC (WSOC) using ion chromatography (IC)-based instruments can replace labor-intensive solvent extraction for many compounds used as source markers. Thermal gas-based continuous nitrate and sulfate measurements underestimate filter ions by 10–50% and require calibration against on-site filter-based measurements. IC-based instruments provide multiple ions and report comparable (±10%) results to filter-based measurements. Maintaining a greater than 80% data capture rate in continuous instruments is labor intensive and requires experienced operators. Several instruments quantify black carbon (BC) by optical or photoacoustic methods, or EC by thermal methods. A few instruments provide real-time OC, EC, and organic speciation. BC and EC concentrations from continuous instruments are highly correlated but the concentrations differ by a factor of two or more. Site- and season-specific mass absorption efficiencies are needed to convert light absorption to BC. Particle mass spectrometers, although semiquantitative, provide much information on particle size and composition related to formation, growth, and characteristics over short averaging times. Efforts are made to quantify mass by collocating with other particle sizing instruments. Common parameters should be identified and consistent approaches are needed to establish comparability among measurements.
Understanding Sources of Fine Particulate Matter in China

Abstract:Fine particulate matter has been a major concern in China as it is closely linked to issues such as haze, health and climate impacts. Since China released its new national air quality standard for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in 2012, great efforts have been put into reducing its concentration and meeting the standard. Significant improvement has been seen in recent years, especially in Beijing, the capital city of China. This paper reviews how China understands its sources of fine particulate matter, the major contributor to haze, and the most recent findings by researchers. It covers the characteristics of PM 2.5 in China, the major methods to understand its sources such as emission inventory and measurement networks, the major research programmes in air quality research, and the major measures that lead to successful control of fine particulate matter pollution. A great example of linking scientific findings to policy is the control of coal combustion from the residential sector in northern China. This review not only provides an overview of the fine particulate matter pollution problem in China, but also its experience of air quality management, which may benefit other countries facing similar issues. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Air quality, past present and future’.
Measurement Methods to Determine Compliance with Ambient Air Quality Standards for Suspended Particles.

Abstract:One of the most important parts of formulating a National Ambient Air Quality Standard is specifying the measurement methods for determining and attaining compliance. The samples taken for compliance are often pushed beyond their original purpose to identify sources, to evaluate the effectiveness of controls, and to determine relationships between pollution levels and public health. A full understanding of available sampling and analysis methods is needed, as well as an analysis of their costs, before acceptable monitoring approached can be specified. This review identifies issues related to measurement methods used to determine compliance with standards, describes current and future measurement methods and their limitations, and determines the extent to which existing technology can meet short-term and long-term needs for measuring compliance.

Abstract:Airborne particulate matter (PM) is of great concern in the modern-day atmosphere owing to its association with a variety of health impacts, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Of the various size fractions of PM, it is the finer fractions that are most harmful to health, in particular ultrafine particles (PM0.1; UFPs), with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 100 nm. The smaller size fractions, of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5; fine particles) and ≤0.1 μm (PM0.1; ultrafine particles), have been shown to have numerous linkages to negative health effects; however, their collection/sampling remains challenging. This review paper employed a comprehensive literature review methodology; 200 studies were evaluated based on the rigor of their methodologies, including the validity of experimental designs, data collection methods, and statistical analyses. Studies with robust methodologies were prioritised for inclusion. This review paper critically assesses the health risks associated with fine and ultrafine particles, highlighting vehicular emissions as the most significant source of particulate-related health effects. While coal combustion, diesel exhaust, household wood combustors' emissions, and Earth's crust dust also pose health risks, evidence suggests that exposure to particulates from vehicular emissions has the greatest impact on human health due to their widespread distribution and contribution to air pollution-related diseases. This article comprehensively examines current sampling technologies, specifically focusing on the collection and sampling of ultrafine particles (UFP) from ambient air to facilitate toxicological and physiochemical characterisation efforts. This article discusses diverse approaches to collect fine and ultrafine particulates, along with experimental endeavours to assess ultrafine particle concentrations across various microenvironments. Following meticulous evaluation of sampling techniques, high-volume air samplers such as the Chem Vol Model 2400 High Volume Cascade Impactor and low-volume samplers like the Personal Cascade Impactor Sampler (PCIS) emerge as effective methods. These techniques offer advantages in particle size fractionation, collection efficiency, and adaptability to different sampling environments, positioning them as valuable tools for precise characterisation of particulate matter in air quality research and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The new China national ambient air quality standard has been published in 2012 and will be implemented in 2016. To meet the requirements in this new standard, monitoring and controlling PM2,,5 emission from stationary sources are very important. However, so far there is no national standard method on sampling PM2.5 from stationary sources. Different sampling methods for PM2.5 from stationary sources and relevant international standards were reviewed in this study. It includes the methods for PM2.5 sampling in flue gas and the methods for PM2.5 sampling after dilution. Both advantages and disadvantages of these sampling methods were discussed. For environmental management, the method for PM2.5 sampling in flue gas such as impactor and virtual impactor was suggested as a standard to determine filterable PM2.5. To evaluate environmental and health effects of PM2.5 from stationary sources, standard dilution method for sampling of total PM2.5 should be established.

Abstract:Exposure to airborne fine particles (PM2.5, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) severely threatens global human health. Understanding the distribution and processes of inhaled PM2.5 in the human body is crucial to clarify the causal links between PM2.5 pollution and diseases. In contrast to extensive research on the emission and formation of PM2.5 in the ambient environment, reports about the occurrence and fate of PM2.5 in humans are still limited, although many studies have focused on the exposure and adverse effects of PM2.5 with animal models. It has been shown that PM2.5, especially ultrafine particles (UFPs), have the potential to go across different biological barriers and translocate into different human organs (i.e., blood circulation, brain, heart, pleural cavity, and placenta). In this Perspective, we summarize the factors affecting the internal exposure of PM2.5 and the relevant analytical methodology and review current knowledge about the exposure pathways and distribution of PM2.5 in humans. We also discuss the research challenges and call for more studies on the identification and characterization of key toxic species of PM2.5, quantification of internal exposure doses in the general population, and further clarification of translocation, metabolism, and clearance pathways of PM2.5 in the human body. In this way, it is possible to develop toxicity-based air quality standards instead of the currently used mass-based standards.

Abstract:With the economic growth, the environmental pollution is still a challenge for sustainable development all over the world.In order to prevent, reduce and remediate the various environmental problems, it is crucial to develop innovative and efficient materials to remove and decompose pollutants from air or water in that the efficient adsorbents and catalysts are playing an important role in the process of physical and chemical reactions.Therefore, the editors of FESE proposed to publish one special issue, and report the original research and review papers about advanced adsorbents and catalysts that are potentially or widely applied in environmental protection.The contents of the articles include the preparation and application of environmental adsorbents and catalysts, which are mainly applied in air pollution control and wastewater treatment.The scientific topics of the articles include exhaust gas purification (such as DeNO x catalysis from mobile and stationary sources, catalytic oxidation of CO and VOC), the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from wastewater by some novel adsorbents and catalysts, indoor air quality improvement via photo-, plasma-and electro-catalysis for the removal of indoor air pollutants, and CO 2 capture using various adsorbents.We believe that the special issue will promote the information communication among leading researchers working on adsorbents and catalysts for controlling air pollution and improving water quality, and contribute to the well understanding between environmental catalysis/adsorption and environmental sciences.

Abstract:The influence of human activity own the earth's atmospheric composition has never been more pronounced. Anthropogenic pollution is in fact the largest effector of the observed evolving atmospheric composition (Wallace, 2006). PM2.5 is a class of particulate matter pollutants of notable interest due to their significant driving of chemical, atmospheric change, their wide-scale, global circulations, and their malignant effects on human health; with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns; PM2.5s derive from combustion of organic materials, including fossil fuel combustion (Wallace, 2006) and forest fires (Newman, 2007). The gases released in these combustion reactions then condense in the atmosphere, undergoing gas to particle conversion, resulting in the atmospheric presence of PM2.5s. Particulate matter (PM) pollutants are harmful to human health in all diameter scales; increasing in recent years global morbidity and mortality (Araujo, 2011). The health risks of PM2.5 in particular are troubling due to their small size, which facilities their permeability in the respiratory system and ready diffusion into the bloodstream, inducing pathologies like ischaemic heart disease, respiratory infections, and lung cancers to name a few (Araujo, 2011). Once PM2.5 manifest in the atmosphere, they circulate on a larger scale due to atmospheric circulation patterns. Though government-enacted air quality measures have reduced the average PM2.5 levels in North America, pollution episodes still cause localized, acute PM2.5 exposure. The purpose of this project was to analyze PM2.5 mean concentration across America to identify and quantify any pollution episodes, as well as try to explain their dynamics using large scale, meteorological processes.

Abstract:The Asian Aerosol Conference (AAC), held every two years, is the most prestigious conference for aerosol researchers in Asian region. The 9th AAC (AAC 2015) was held by Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology (JAAST) on behalf of Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA) from June 24 to 27, 2015 at Kanazawa, Japan. A total of 520 participants from 14 countries presented 430 papers, including 4 plenary lectures, 16 keynote speeches, 125 oral and 285 poster papers in the conference. There were 270 Japanese participants and 250 participants from abroad in which China (with 87 participants), Korea (with 77 participants) and Taiwan (with 57 participants) contributed to the most attendees. Among the papers presented in the conference, ‘PM2.5 symposium’, “atmospheric aerosols’ and ‘urban air quality’ sessions addressed many important issues related to PM2.5 and ambient aerosols in East Asian countries. The features of this conference is the inaugural presentation of six AARA fellows, bestowal of two Asian Young Aerosol Scientist Awards, and a half day symposium “Analysis of Aerosol by Young Asian Researchers” which was a great opportunity for the networking of young aerosol researchers in Asian region.

PM2.5 chemical composition and spatiotemporal variability during the California Regional PM10/PM2.5 Air Quality Study (CRPAQS)

Abstract:The 14-month-long (December 1999 to February 2001) Central California Regional PM10/PM2.5 Air Quality Study (CRPAQS) consisted of acquiring speciated PM2.5 measurements at 38 sites representing urban, rural, and boundary environments in the San Joaquin Valley air basin. The study's goal was to understand the development of widespread pollution episodes by examining the spatial variability of PM2.5, ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), and carbonaceous material on annual, seasonal, and episodic timescales. It was found that PM2.5 and NH4NO3 concentrations decrease rapidly as altitude increases, confirming that topography influences the ventilation and transport of pollutants. High PM2.5 levels from November 2000 to January 2001 contributed to 50-75% of annual average concentrations. Contributions from organic matter differed substantially between urban and rural areas. Winter meteorology and intensive residential wood combustion are likely key factors for the winter-nonwinter and urban-rural contrasts that were observed. Short-duration measurements during the intensive operating periods confirm the role of upper air currents on valley-wide transport of NH4NO3. Zones of representation for PM2.5 varied from 5 to 10 km for the urban Fresno and Bakersfield sites, and increased to 15-20 km for the boundary and rural sites. Secondary NH4NO3 occurred region-wide during winter, spreading over a much wider geographical zone than carbonaceous aerosol.
