Abstract:Based on the observational data of ground O3,NOx and meteorological conditions in Shantou,Jieyang and Chaozhou in July,the interrelationship between them and the O3 pollution of this area was analysed.The results showed that O3 pollution was light at the area,while the lightest polluted area was Shantou,followed by Chaozhou.The relation between O3 and NOx or between O3 and air humidity was negative,and the relation between O3 and air temperature was positive.O3 was easily to be generated and accumulated when air temperature was high and relative humidity was low.
Study of Ozone “weekend Effect” in Shanghai

Abstract:Analysis of observed ozone data in 2006 from five monitoring sites (Xujiahui, Chongming, Baoshan, Pudong, Jinshan) in Shanghai reveals that ozone (O 3 ) concentrations in Xujiahui are higher at weekends than those on weekdays, despite the fact that emissions of ozone precursor substances, such as oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are lower at weekends than those on weekdays. The possible chemical cause of ozone “weekend effect” is that NO 2 /NO ratio increases at weekends by 25.61% compared with those on weekdays. In addition, because of an average 12.13% reduction in NO x (NO + NO 2 ) in the early morning (05:00–09:00) at weekends compared with that on weekdays, the ozone inhibition period ends 0.5 h earlier at weekends resulting in the longer duration of ozone accumulation and the higher ozone production rate. The rate of ozone production is a function of VOCs and NO x in the atmosphere. VOCs/NO x ratio in Xujiahui is 4.55 at weekends, and 4.37 on weekdays, belonging to the “NO x -limited”. The increasing VOCs/NO x ratio at weekends leads to ozone enhancement from 73 ppbv to 80 ppbv, which are consistent with ozone “weekend effect” in Xujiahui. Furthermore, combining with MICAPS cloud amount data, the fact that ozone “weekend effect” in Xujiahui weakens gradually along with the increasing of cloud amount indicates that ozone photochemical production leads to ozone “weekend effect” in Xujiahui of Shanghai.

Abstract:Over the past few years, marked increases in ground-level ozone (O-3) concentration has been detected over much of eastern China. These high levels of O-3 pollution have been demonstrated to be detrimental to human health and plant growth, which requires urgent control on China's O-3 pollution. Among the various control measures, diurnal regulations of VOCs were adopted in some regions in China. For example, several local governments encourage factories with notable VOCs emissions shift their manufacturing processes to the nighttime; some governments also offer discount for night refueling. However, the effects of this diurnal regulation approach are still unclear. To evaluate the effectiveness of this measure, we proposed a quantitative assessment using WRF-CAMx air quality model. The assessment was systematically implemented at multiple time and spatial scales. Results at the regional scale revealed that the diurnal regulation of VOCs could slightly redistribute hourly O-3 concentrations and had minor influence on hourly peak O-3 concentration. The effects of this measure on hourly O-3 concentrations varied substantially across different cities: positive or negative impacts on O-3 concentrations were both found at the city level. At the daily scale, the variations of maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) O-3 concentrations were distributed between -1% and 1%, accounting for about 88%, 76%, 65% of the entire days in key regions under S1, S2, S3; the average O-3-polluted days demonstrated an increasing trend in "2 + 26''cities and YRD, but for FWP and PRD, there were little changes in average number of O-3-polluted days. And at the monthly scale, the effects were not satisfactory, monthly average MDA8 O-3 demonstrated an increasing trend under VOCs regulation scenarios in "2 + 26" cities, FWP and YRD; Increasing or decreasing trends in monthly average MDA8 O-3 were both found at the city level, but most of the variations were less than 1%. In general, Diurnal regulation of VOCs may not be effective in controlling ozone pollution at the regional scale. Measures proposed to control O-3 pollution need more refined management and scientific evaluation before wide implementation.
Revisiting day-of-week ozone patterns in an era of evolving US air quality

Abstract:Past work has shown that traffic patterns in the USA and resulting NO x emissions vary by day of week, with NO x emissions typically being higher on weekdays than weekends. This pattern of emissions leads to different levels of ozone on weekends versus weekdays and can be leveraged to understand how local ozone formation changes in response to NO x emission perturbations in different urban areas. Specifically, areas with lower NO x but higher ozone on the weekends (the weekend effect) can be characterized as NO x -saturated and areas with both lower NO x and ozone on weekends (the weekday effect) can be characterized as NO x -limited. In this analysis, we assess maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) ozone weekend–weekday differences across 51 USA nonattainment areas using 18 years of observed and modeled data from 2002–2019, using the following two metrics: mean MDA8 ozone and percentage of days with MDA8 ozone > 70 ppb (parts per billion). In addition, we quantify the modeled and observed trends in these weekend–weekday differences across this period of substantial NO x emission reductions in the USA. The model assessment is carried out using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Air QUAlity TimE Series Project (EQUATES) Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model dataset. We identify three types of MDA8 ozone trends occurring across the USA, namely transitioning chemical regime, disappearing weekday effect, and no trend. The transitioning chemical regime trend occurs in a subset of large urban areas that were NO x -saturated (i.e., volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited) at the beginning of the analysis period but transitioned to mixed chemical regimes or NO x -limited conditions by the end of the analysis period. Nine areas have strong transitioning chemical regime trends using both modeled and observed data and with both metrics indicating strong agreement that they are shifting to more NO x -limited conditions: Milwaukee, Houston, Phoenix, Denver, the Northern Wasatch Front, the Southern Wasatch Front, Las Vegas, Los Angeles – San Bernardino County, Los Angeles – South Coast, and San Diego. The disappearing weekday effect was identified for multiple rural and agricultural areas of California which were NO x -limited for the entire analysis period but appear to become less influenced by local day-of-week emission patterns in more recent years. Finally, we discuss a variety of reasons why there are no trends in certain areas including complex impacts of heterogeneous source mixes and stochastic impacts of meteorology. Overall, this assessment finds that the EQUATES modeling simulations indicate more NO x -saturated conditions than the observations but do a good job of capturing year-to-year changes in weekend–weekday MDA8 ozone patterns.

Abstract:Studying weekend-weekday variation in ground-level ozone (O3) allows one to better understand O3 formation conditions, with a potential for developing effective strategies for O3 control. Reducing inappropriately the O3 precursors emissions can either produce no reduction or increase surface O3 concentrations. This paper analyzes the weekend-weekday differences of O3 at 300 rural and 808 urban background stations worldwide from 2005 to 2014, in order to investigate the O3 weekend effect over time and assess the effectiveness of the precursors emissions control policies for reducing O3 levels. Data were analyzed with the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and Theil-Sen estimator. Rural sites typically did not experience a weekend-weekday effect. In all urban stations, the mean O3 concentration on the weekend was 12% higher than on weekdays. Between 2005 and 2014, the annual mean of daily O3 concentrations increased at 74% of urban sites worldwide (+ 0.41 ppb year−1) and decreased in the United Kingdom (- 0.18 ppb year−1). Over this time period, emissions of O3 precursors declined significantly. However, a greater decline in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions caused an increase in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) to NOx ratios leading to O3 formation. In France, South Korea and the United Kingdom, most urban stations showed a significant upward trend (+ 1.15% per year) for O3 weekend effect. Conversely, in Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy and the United States, the O3 weekend effect showed a significant downward trend (- 0.26% per year). Further or inappropriate control of anthropogenic emissions in Canada, Southern Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States might result in increased daily O3 levels in urban areas.

Abstract:Periodical changes of human activities cause weekend-weekday differences of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NO + NO2 = NOx) emissions, which induce urban ozone (O3) pollution and sec-ondary organic aerosol (SOA) in fine particulate (with aerodynamic diameters <= 2.5 mu m; PM2.5). However, in-fluences of weekend-weekday differences in primary emissions on the production of secondary pollutants remain unknown. The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument and surface observations are carried to simultaneously monitor VOCs, NO2, O3, and PM2.5 concentrations in urban Zhengzhou, China during the weekend and the weekday. Reductions in anthropogenic activities result in atmospheric VOCs and NO2 reductions during the weekend. The ratios of formaldehyde columns to NO2 columns during the weekend afternoon and the weekday afternoon (0.53 and 0.39, respectively) are less than 2.30, indicating the O3 formation under the VOC-limited regime. Lower total VOCs (TVOCs) mixing ratios but higher ratios of TVOCs mixing ratios to NO2 mixing ra-tios during the weekend afternoon perform faster photochemical O3 production. In contrast, higher TVOCs mixing ratios are responsible for higher SOA formation during the weekday. Based on the positive matrix factorization model and VOCs reactivities, solvent usage, vehicle exhaust, and industrial sources are majorly responsible for SOA (80.1%) and O3 (79.9%) formation potential. To reduce O3 concentrations during the weekend and SOA concentrations during the weekday collaboratively, solvent, vehicle, and industrial activities should be transformed from weekday to weekend.

Abstract:Since 2005,Shanghai Meteorological Bureau(SMB) has established a surface ozone monitoring network.In this paper,the ozone concentrations measured at five stations(Xujiahui,Pudong,Baoshan,Jinshan,and Chunmin) between 2006 and 2008 are analyzed and discussed.The result shows that the ozone concentrations are higher in the urban area than in the rural area.In heavy industrial regions,the highest ozone concentrations occur in the petrochemical industrial region(Jinshan station),which are higher than the steel industrial region(Baoshan).Ozone concentrations exceeding the national air quality standard appear from March to November,with the highest number of days in July,followed by August and May.In diurnal ranges,13—15 p.m.is the time for exceeding the national air quality standard(100 ppbv) with the maximum occurrences for the hourly averaged ozone;the time for exceeding the standard(75 ppbv;the US EPA standard) with the maximum occurrences is around 9—10 a.m.for the 8-hourly averaged ozone.Because the ozone standards are established by different agencies(WHO,European Union,the US EPA,and national air quality standard),the numbers of day for exceeding the standards vary with the different standards.For example,the numbers of day are the highest using the WHO standard,followed by the European Union standard,the US EPA standard,and the national air quality standard.In addition,using the 8-hour smoothing method(75 ppbv;the US EPA standard) also increases the numbers of day for exceeding the standard(100 ppbv,the national air quality standard) by about 100%.During the ozone warning practices,it is easier to use the hourly averaged ozone concentrations.However,by considering the exposure effect,the 8-hourly averaged concentrations have more scientific bases for the warning standard with consideration of human’s health.
A Study on the Characteristics of Ozone Weekend Effect and Reaction Sensitivity in Chengdu

Abstract:This study improved the computation theory "Ozone Weekend Effect Method" (OWEM) and analyzed the 2016 observation data from the state-controlled ambient air quality monitoring sites in Chengdu using the OWEM theory. The improved OWEM theory is then applied to processing large sample data and making a judgment on photochemical reaction sensitivity in Chengdu. The result of applying the OWEM theory to Chengdu shows 1) that the VOCs-limited period, the NOx-limited period and the photochemical reaction steady-state period, R-t, accounted for 66.06%, 33.64% and 0.30%, respectively; 2) that on a seasonal basis, i.e. in the ozone photochemical reaction occurring in spring, summer, autumn and winter 2016 in Chengdu, the VOCs-limited period accounted for 59.40%, 72.49%, 63.85% and 68.49% of the 2016 observed data, respectively, and the NOx-limited period accounted for 39.70%, 27.51%, 36.15% and 31.19%respectively; 3) that in the VOCs-limited period and the NOx-limited period of August 2016, the month when the most serious ozone pollution of that year occurred in Chengdu, R-t accounted for 70.0% and 30.0%, respectively, and that there was no photochemical reaction steady-state zone period that month; 4) and that through estimation, it is suggested that as for the ozone pollution control of Chengdu, the ratio of VOCs emission reduction to NOx emission reduction should be around 3:1.
Meteorology driving the highest ozone level occurred during mid-spring to early summer in Shanghai, China

Abstract:More recent studies highlighted the aggravated surface ozone (O-3) pollutions occurred in Spring and Autumn in China, but presenting clear distinctions for different cities. In this study, we observed the most elevated mean daily and maximum daily 8-h (MDA8) O-3 concentrations occurred from mid-Spring to early Summer (April, May and June, AMJ) at both urban and remote sites in Shanghai compared to other warm months (March, July, August, September, October), based on the long-term measurements from 2010 to 2019. The typical weather pattern of G-SW (High pressure with predominant winds of southwesterly) recognized by T-mode principal component approach (T-PCA), exhibits the strongest solar radiation and highest daily maximum temperature relative to other weathers in AMJ, leading to not only the most elevated O-3 concentration, but also the largest O-3 increasing variability in daytime. More importantly, under the G-SW weather condition, the MDA8 O-3 concentration presents the greatest increasing rate at 3.95 ppbv/yr from 2010 to 2019 in Shanghai downtown compared to other weather patterns, suggesting that more occurrence and faster exacerbation of O-3 pollutions could be expected under the G-SW weather condition in the future. To understand and mitigate high O-3 occurrences under the weather pattern of G-SW during AMJ, process analysis by a chemical/dynamical model (WRF-Chem, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with Chemistry) is conducted to elucidate the strong O-3 productivity (19 ppbv/h in daytime), that dominates the high O-3 occurrence under the G-SW weather condition. Sensitive studies suggest that under the G-SW weather condition, reduction of VOCs emissions is very effective to prevent the high O-3 pollution in Shanghai. The model results show that photochemical productivity decreases by 35% in daytime response to 30% reduction of VOCs emissions, leading to 17.6% mitigation of peak O-3 concentration in Shanghai downtown. This result provides valuable information for the development of emission control strategy in Shanghai under different weather conditions. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Day-of-week Patterns for Ultrafine Particulate Matter Components at Four Sites in California

Abstract:Ultrafine particulate matter (PM0.1) samples were collected during three-day averaging periods over an annual cycle at four sites across California: Los Angeles, East Oakland, San Pablo, and Fresno. PM0.1 samples were analyzed for thermal carbon fractions using a thermal-optical carbon analyzer and trace elements using ICP-MS. A statistical analysis of the day-of-week trends for 15 PM0.1 components reveals location-specific patterns along with important general trends for UFP concentrations. PM0.1 elemental carbon (EC) concentrations are elevated in the middle of the week consistent with increased activity for diesel engines during this time period. Just as significantly, PM0.1 organic carbon (OC) concentrations do not exhibit a day-of-week pattern. Since OC accounts for the majority of the PM0.1 total mass, the lack of a day-of-week pattern for PM0.1 OC suggests that diesel engines do not dominate total PM0.1 mass in California. A paired t-test constructed using measurements on weekends compared to measurements immediately preceding or immediately following the weekend showed that PM0.1 potassium (K) and rubidium (Rb) concentrations were elevated on weekends. This pattern is consistent with increased biomass combustion on weekends (a previously unknown exposure pattern for UFPs). The two closest sampling locations (East Oakland and San Pablo) had the greatest number of UFP components with identical weekly trends, but even at these locations only 4 out of 15 components displayed the exact same day-of-week profiles. Less similarity was observed in measured day-of-week profiles for UFP components at other sites. The heterogeneity between sites suggests that the details of UFP concentrations at each location reflect the mixture of sources immediately adjacent to that site. By extension, individual neighborhoods across California will each experience unique day-of-week concentration profiles for UFP components that reflect the surrounding sources. These factors must be considered when estimating population exposure to ultrafine particles during future health effects studies.
Variation characteristics and weekend effect of nitrogen oxides and ozone in Hong Kong Port

Abstract:To study the weekend effect of pollutants in Hong Kong port,pollution data of NO2,NOx,and O3 from 2 000 to 2014 were selected and analyzed.Firstly,based on the daily average data,NO2 and NOx concentrations on workdays were found to be higher than those on Saturdays and,in turn,these values were higher than those on Sundays.However,O3 concentrations on workdays were found to be lower than those on Saturdays and,in turn,these values were lower than those on Sundays.Secondly,based on yearly data,NO2 and NOx showed a decreasing trend,but O3 showed an increasing trend.Meanwhile,weekend effects for NO2,NOx,and O3 in recent years were found to be less conspicuous.Thirdly,the local and regional contributions of O3 were explored.Due to port operations,local contribution of oxidants on port on workdays exceeded the corresponding contributions on both Saturdays and Sundays.Finally,results showed that the weekend effect of the local contribution of oxidants during daytime was stronger than during nighttime.
Observational study of ground-level ozone and climatic factors in Craiova, Romania, based on one-year high-resolution data

Abstract:Air pollution is a multifaceted issue affecting people's health, environment, and biodiversity. Gaining comprehension of the interactions between natural and anthropocentric pollutant concentrations and local climate is challenging. This study aims to address the following two questions: (1) What is the influential mechanism of climatic and anthropogenic factors on the ground-level ozone (O 3 ) concentrations in an urban environment during different seasons? (2) Can the ozone weekend effect be observed in a medium-sized city like Craiova, and under which conditions? In order to answer these questions, ozone interactions with meteorological parameters (temperature, pressure, relative humidity) and pollutant concentrations (particulate matter, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide) is evaluated based on a one-year dataset given by a low-cost sensor and one-year dataset provided by the National Environment Agency. Using two statistical analysis programs, Python and SPSS, a good understanding of the correlations between these variables and ozone concentration is obtained. The SPSS analysis underscores the significant impact of three meteorological factors and nine other pollutants on the ozone level. A positive correlation is noticed in the summer when sunlight is intense and photochemical reactions are elevated. The relationship between temperature and ozone concentration is strong and positive, as confirmed by Spearman's rho correlation coefficient ( r = 0.880). A significant negative correlation is found between relative humidity and ozone ( r = -0.590). Moreover, the analysis shows that particulate matter concentrations exhibit a significant negative correlation with ozone ( r ≈ -0.542), indicating that higher particulate matter concentrations reduce ozone levels. Volatile organic compounds show a significant negative correlation with ozone ( r = -0.156). A negative relationship between ozone and carbon dioxide ( r = -0.343), indicates that elevated carbon dioxide levels might also suppress ozone concentrations. A significant positive correlation between nitrogen dioxide and ozone ( r = 0.060), highlights the role of nitrogen dioxide in the production of ozone through photochemical reactions. However, nitric oxide shows a negative correlation with ozone ( r = -0.055) due to its role in ozone formation. Carbon monoxide has no statistically significant effect on ozone concentration. To observe the differences between weekdays and weekends, T-Test was used. Even though significant differences were observed in temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide levels between weekdays and weekends, the T-Test did not highlight a significant weekend ozone effect in a mid-sized city as Craiova. Using Python, the daily values were calculated and compared with the limit values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Environment Agency (EEA). The WHO O 3 recommended levels were exceeded for 13 times in one year. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of ozone pollution in a mid-sized city as Craiova, serving as a valuable reference for local decision-makers. It provides critical insights into the seasonal dynamics of ozone levels, emphasizing the significant role of temperature in ozone formation and the complex interactions between various pollutants and meteorological factors.

Abstract:SJVAQS/AUSPEX acquired PM2.5, PM10, and gas samples at ten sites in central California during five ozone episodes over a period of 14 intensive sampling days. Four sample sets per day were collected for 5- and 7-hour durations during this period and analyzed for particulate mass, elements, ions, and organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC). Gaseous ammonia, nitric acid, and sulfur dioxide were collected with absorbing filters. Ozone (O-3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) were measured continuously. Concentrations varied by sampling site, time of the day, and ozone episode. The highest concentrations of most chemical species were found at sites in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Nitrate occurred mainly in the gas phase during the daytime when temperatures exceeded 25 degrees C, and in the particulate phase during the nighttime when temperatures decreased to less than 10 degrees C. Significant amounts of nitrate volatilized from particles collected on quartz-fiber filters. Diurnal patterns of ozone, nitrogen oxides, PAN, nitric acid, and total particle citrate were similar at most of the sites, which were separated by hundreds of kilometers, showing evidence of both photochemical conversion and transport of polluted air masses. Suzhou: A preliminary case study of ground-level ozone pollution in a middle size Chinese City

Abstract:Within the Sino-Italian environmental protection cooperation framework, an entire air quality monitoring network has been developed in Suzhou, China. The system was developed to comply with the European standards established by the Italian Institute for Atmospheric Pollution. Evidence of a regional transport pollution phenomenon was observed, i.e., O3 concentrations are relatively high at the regional background site with observed peaks in spring over 120 ppb but lower at the residential and traffic sites ∼ 70 ppb. The results also reflect common daily variations and long term temporal trends at all sites. By analyzing relative NO2 and NO and O3 concentrations and interpreting the vertical wind profiles, atmospheric stability index, it was possible to isolate a particular photochemical pollution phenomenon from ozone peak episodes contributed from the free-troposphere reservoir or formatted by local reactions. Abstract:This study investigates the air pollutant interactions and emission source contributions to ozone (O-3) formation within a complex terrain. Air quality simulations using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Model focused on vertical distributions of O-3 for the July 14-18, 2005 episode in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB). The Zero-Out method was applied in sensitivity tests for seven emission source categories. Elevated O-3 concentrations were found near the top of the planetary boundary layer (PBL, similar to 1200 m) and in the free troposphere (similar to 3500 m) over the eastern SoCAB. Low O-3 concentrations were found near the surface at the center of the basin due to nitrogen oxide (NO) titration by fresh vehicle exhaust. Sea and land breezes, enhanced by up-slope flows (the "mountain chimney effect") transported O-3 upward. Formation of O-3 is sensitive to the H2O2/HNO3 ratio, depending on fresh vs. aged pollutant mixtures. Biogenic emissions were important contributors to O-3 formation, both in the SoCAB and at the top of the PBL. In contrast, the highest vehicle contributions to O-3 were found far from urban areas and in the lower free troposphere. Vertical cross-sectional analysis provided some insights into the O-3 formation and mixing processes present in the SoCAB.

Abstract:Large day-to-day variability in O 3 and CO was observed at Chongming, a remote rural site east of Shanghai, in August 2010. High ozone periods (HOPs) that typically lasted for 3–5 days with daily maximum ozone exceeding 102 ppb were intermittent with low ozone periods (LOPs) with daily maximum ozone less than 20 ppb. The correlation analysis of ozone with meteorological factors suggests that the large variations of surface ozone are driven by meteorological conditions correlated with the changes in the location and intensity of the west Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). When the center of WPSH with weaker intensity is to the southeast of Chongming site, the mixing ratios and variability of surface ozone are higher. When the center of WPSH with stronger intensity is to the northeast of Chongming site, the mixing ratios and variability of surface ozone are lower. Sensitivity simulations using the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model indicate that meteorological condition associated with WPSH is the primary factor controlling surface ozone at Chongming in August, while local anthropogenic emissions make significant contributions to surface ozone concentrations only during HOP.

Abstract:The paper conducts investigation into ozone concentration , where samples taken from both urban and suburban areas in Chongqing.The impacts on ozone from influencing factors , such as temperature , UV-A and humidity , were examined.Study results show that , in general , in terms of ozone-hour and the monthly mean ozone concentration , the outskirts areas experienced higher level than that in urban areas.Besides , ozone concentration has show fairly good positive correlation with temperature and UV-A , while it negatively correlated with humidity rather significantly.
Summertime Day-Night Differences of PM2.5 Components (inorganic Ions, OC, EC, WSOC, WSON, HULIS, and PAHs) in Changzhou, China

Abstract:This work reports the day-night differences of a suite of chemical species including elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON), selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and secondary inorganic ions (NO3−, SO42−, NH4+) in ambient fine particles (PM2.5) collected from 23 July to 23 August 2016 in Changzhou, China. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 and SO42− show a 10–20% increase during daytime, while NO3− concentration decreases by a factor of three from nighttime to daytime due to its semi-volatile nature. PAHs, EC, and WSON show higher mass concentration in the night too. Mass ratios of WSOC to OC are high in both day and night, indicating that secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation could occur throughout the day, while the slightly higher ratio during daytime suggests a more significant contribution from daytime photochemical oxidation. Strong positive correlations between HULIS-C and WSOC, and HULIS-C with O3 both in day and night, imply that HULIS-C, similar to WSOC, is mainly composed of secondary species. HULIS-C accounted for a large fraction of WSOC, with an average of ~60%. Moreover, the average WSON concentrations are 1.08 and 1.46 µg/m3, constituting ~16% and ~18% of water-soluble total nitrogen in day and night, respectively. Correlation analyses suggest that WSON is also predominantly produced from secondary processes. PAHs concentrations are found to be very low in summer aerosols. Overall, our findings highlight the dominant contribution of secondary processes to the major aerosol components in Changzhou, suggesting proper measures to effectively reduce gaseous precursors are also important to improve air quality.

Abstract:Understanding the local-scale spatial and temporal variability of ozone formation is crucial for effective mitigation. We combine tropospheric vertical column densities (VCDTrop) of formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), referred to as HCHO-VCDTrop and NO2-VCDTrop, retrieved from airborne remote sensing and the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with ground-based measurements to investigate changes in ozone precursors and the inferred chemical production regime on high-ozone days in May-August 2018 over two Northeast urban domains. Over New York City (NYC) and Baltimore/Washington D.C. (BAL/DC), HCHO-VCDTrop increases across the domain, but higher NO2-VCDTrop occurs mainly in urban centers on ozone exceedance days (when maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) ozone exceeds 70 ppb at any monitor in the region). The ratio of HCHO-VCDTrop to NO2-VCDTrop, proposed as an indicator of the sensitivity of local surface ozone production rates to its precursors, generally increases on ozone exceedance days, implying a transition toward a more NOx-sensitive ozone production regime that should lead to higher efficacy of NOx controls on the highest ozone days in NYC and BAL/DC. Warmer temperatures and enhanced influence from emissions in the local boundary layer on the high-ozone days are accompanied by slower wind speeds in BAL/DC but stronger, southwesterly winds in NYC.
