Abstract:Polyacetylene has been shown to be an electrical conductor in the metallic range when doped with various agents; hence, considerable attention has been focused on this macromolecule in both industrial and academic laboratories. A natural extension of these studies is the investigation of the polymerization of substituted alkynes. Only a few transition metal catalysts are known to produce high molecular weight polyacetylenes: e.g., ti(OC4H9)4/ Al(C2H5)3 for acetylene, Fe(acac)3/Al(i-C4H9)3 for alkylacetylenes, and WCl6 and MoCl5 for phenylacetylene and other 1-alkynes. This study reports the first example of a systematic investigation of rare earth compounds as catalysts for the polymerization o acetylene and 1-alkynes.

Abstract:The rare earth coordination catalysts are cis-directing catalysts for the polymerization of acetylene. To get more insight into the features of these catalysts, a kinetic study was carried out. The polymerization rate could be expressed as Rp = Kp[M][C∗]. The effects of different catalysts with various rare earth elements on kinetics were studied, and the following activity sequence was found: Nd>Gd>La>Y∼Er>Lu>Sc. The ligands attached to rare earth elements greatly affected the polymerization activities of catalysts. The mechanism of acetylene polymerization by rare earth coordination catalysts was discussed on the basis of the experimental results.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Bulk Polymerization of Styrene Catalyzed by Rare Earth Catalyst

Abstract:The bulk polymerization of styrene catalyzed by Nd(P204)3/MgBu2/HMPA (hexamethyl phospho-ramide) was carried out in capped glass tubes. The effects of reaction conditions on polymerization conversion and molecular weight in the range of high conversion were investigated. The molecular weight of the resultant polymers is dramatically high and its distribution is relatively narrow. The polymerization process demonstrates the feature of living polymerization and auto-acceleration phenomenon. The auto-acceleration phenomenon is attributed to the non-instantaneous formation of the active species. The experimental data suggest that chain transfer to MgBu2 is one of the factors governing the molecular weight development. A mechanism of polymerization is presented with the chain transfer process incorporated.

Abstract:> This paper describes the polymerization of acetylene by coordination catalysts composed ofvarious neodymium compounds, (Nd (P 204 ) 3 ; Nd (P 507 ) 3 ; Nd (NO 3 ) 3 3P 350 ; Nd (BA) 3 .2H 2 O; andNd (acac) 3 .2H 2 O), aluminum trialkyl and an electron donor. The catalysts show fairly high catalyticactivity and high cis stereospecificity on acetylene polymerization at 30℃.

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate was polymerized in toluene with a new rare-earth catalyst composed of rare-earth 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate, di-n-butylmagnesium, and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylethylene diamine. The influence of the catalyst components and reaction conditions on polymerization has been examined in detail. The results showed that the rare-earth catalyst has a high activity and can prepare poly(methyl methacrylate) with a high molecular weight at a low temperature (-18 degrees C). Abstract:Polymerization of acrylonitrile was carried out for the first time using the rare-earth coordination catalysts composed of rare-earth 2-ethyl hexyl phosphonate [Ln(P204)3], dibutylmagnesium [Mg(Bu − n)2], and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl ethylene diamine (TMEDA, 1:6:6 molar ratio). The new catalyst gives high molecular weight polyacrylonitrile in fairly good yield. The triad tacticities of the polymers obtained increase with a decrease of polymerization temperature and mm content attains 0.52 at − 78 °C.

Abstract:Acetylacetonates of nine rare earth elements, combined with triisobutylaluminum and water, were used as catalysts for the polymerization of epichlorohydrin (ECH). It was found that the Nd(acac)3-Al(iso-Bu)3-H2O system was a favourable catalyst for polymerization with respect to preparing polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) with high molecular weight and low crystallinity. The polymerization of ECH with Nd(acac)3-Al(iso-Bu)3-H2O catalyst system was investigated concerning the dependence of polymerization catalyst composition, i.e., Al/Nd and H2O/Al molar ratios, polymerization time, and solvent, etc. THF polymerization catalyzed by Nd(acac)3-Al(iso-Bu)3-H2O was also performed to check the character of the catalyst system. The bimetallic nature of the catalyst was proposed.

Abstract:The study of rare earth coordination catalysts for polymerization of 1-octene has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of polymerization of 1-octene by Nd(naph)3-AlEt3 catalyst system in tetrachloro-methane are described. The overall polymerization activation energy E(a) measured was 74.5 kJ/mol and the rate equation could be expressed as R(p) = k(p) [Nd] [M] (k(p) = 3.21 X 10(-3) L/mol s, at 50-degrees-C). The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln (naph)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the polymerization was compared. A 1-octene oligomer with double bonds was obtained. It is either a white or pale yellow waxy semi-solid. Its number-average molecular weight is about 10(3) and the molecular weight distribution is less than 2.

Abstract:A new series of single-component air-stable transition metal acetylide catalysts for the polymerization of substituted acetylenes carrying non-polar and polar groups was developed. The catalytic properties of transition metal acetylides are related to transition metals, phosphines and acetylenic ligands. Nickel acetylides show higher catalytic activity towards the polymerization of substituted acetylenes containing non-polar groups, while palladium acetylides show higher catalytic activity towards the polymerization of substituted acetylenes carrying polar groups. Palladium acetylides with PPh 3 ligand are efficient catalysts for the polymerization of substituted acetylenes bearing both non-polar and polar groups.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Abstract:Rare earth naphthenates and phosphonates with trialkylaluminum compounds were investigated as catalysts for the polymerization of 1-alkynes. The neodymium naphthenate/ triisobutylaluminum system was found to promote high conversions to polymers of relatively high molecular weights in the case of alkyl-substituted acetylenes. The polymers obtained showed, by infrared spectroscopy, high cis content in the polyconjugated chains.

Abstract:The rare earth naphthenates of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu, in combination with triethylaluminum, were investigated as catalysts for the polymerization of phenylacetylene. All were found, at least to a small degree, to be active, and produce atactic polyphenylacetylene showing the presence of both cis and trans double bonds in the chain. These polymers exhibited a low degree (∼ 28%) of crystallinity. However, the neodymium system produced a crystalline (45%) cis-cisoid polymer. An interesting, but as yet unexplained, correlation exists between activity of the catalyst, as indicated by yield of polymer obtained, and the number of f electrons on the metal.

Abstract:High cis polyacetylene films with silvery metallic appearance were prepared by coordination catalysts, comprising of naphthenates of all fifteen rare earth elements, and trialkyl aluminum at room temperature. The resultant polyacetylene (PA)was characterized by infrared spectrophotometry, electron spin resonance, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron micrography, differential scanning calorimetry and electrical resistivity measurements. The enthalpy and apparent activation energy of thermal cis-trans isomerization of 98% cis PA were 1.7–1.8 kcal/mol and 19.0 kcal/mol respectively. Rare earth PA shows higher thermal and antioxidization stability than does PA with other catalysts.

Abstract:Polymerization of styrene has been investigated using homogeneous rare earth coordination catalysts based on a neodymium compound, triisobutylaluminium and/or a third component. Satisfactory results have been obtained by aging catalyst components for 1 h at 60°C, and polymerizing styrene in hexane at 60°C. The addition of CCl4 as a third component to Nd(naph)3-Al(iso-Bu)3 system greatly increases catalytic activity. The order of catalytic activity of Nd compounds with different ligands for styrene polymerization is as follows: Nd(P507)3∼Nd(P204)3>Nd(naph)3>Nd(acac)3·3H2O. Both Nd(P507)3−Al(iso-Bu)3 and Nd(P204)3−Al(iso-Bu)3 systems prepared in the presence of monomer show high catalytic activity. A syndiotactic-rich polystyrene was obtained with Nd (naph)3−Al (iso-Bu)3- and/or a third component systems in hexane at 60°C.

Abstract:The stereospecific polymerization is one of the most critical topics in polymer sciences, due to the significant influence of tacticity on the properties of polymers.This review summarizes recent progress in stereospecific coordination polymerization mediated by rare earth metal complexes.The stereospecific coordination polymerization is achieved by optimizing the structures of ligands, the rare earth metal ions, and the polymerization conditions, while styrene, polar substituted styrenes, 2-vinylpyridine and other olefins are used as monomers.The properties of resulting polymers are significantly influenced by the structure of monomers, and the tacticity of polymers.
