Abstract:A series of cobalt complexes bearing N-containing diphosphine PNP ligands has been synthesized and characterized. The nature of the ligand structure affects the binding of the ligand to the cobalt center and determines the coordination geometry of the cobalt complexes. All the complexes have been employed to catalyze the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, in combination with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) as the cocatalyst. Both the nature of the ligand and the type of cocatalyst had a remarkable influence on the polymerization activity, microstructure and molecular weight of the resulting polymers. The [Co]/MAO catalytic systems resulted in relatively lower conversions of butadiene and cis-1,4 contents in the polymers than the corresponding [Co]/EASC catalytic systems. Upon activation with EASC, the polymerization behaviors of the catalytic systems were also affected by the reaction parameters.

Abstract:A series of bis{[2-(4,5-diphenylimidazolyl)phenylimino]phenolate}cobalt(II) complexes (C1–C4) has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrated that the cobalt center was coordinated by two [NNO–] ligands and adopted a slightly distorted octahedronal geometry. The type of cocatalyst had a remarkable influence on the catalytic properties and ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) was proved to be more efficient for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene to produce higher conversion of butadiene and cis-1,4 content of polybutadienes. On activation with EASC, all the cobalt complexes displayed high catalytic activity for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene. The microstructure determined by FT-IR and NMR spectra demonstrated that high cis-1,4 contents in the resulting polymers were obtained. The conversion of butadiene, microstructure, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polybutadienes were influenced by the reaction parameters and ligand structure.

Abstract:Polymer-coated particles were used to develop a novel catalyst technology for the production of broad/bimodal polyethylene in a single reactor. The methods for broad/bimodal polyethylene by catalyst technology, such as hybrid catalyst, composite support, and diffusion control, were combined together in this catalyst technology. An improved phase inversion method was used to fabricate poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (PSA) coated silica particles (SiO2/PSA). Core shell structure was obviously observed in the resulting SiO2/PSA. SiO2/PSA showed a significant barrier effect to the diffusion of 1-hexene and hexane but but no barrier effect to the diffusion of ethylene. This means the PSA layer has a selective barrier effect to the diffusion of small molecules. PSA-coated silica particles were used to support (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2/TiCl4, TiCl3/TiCl4, and Cp2ZrCl2/Fe based hybrid catalysts. The ethylene polymerization results indicated that the two different active sites can perform independently, and broad/bimodal polyethylene was obtained by all hybrid catalysts. The polydispersity index of the resulting polyethylene was as high as 18.13, even 44.5. The style of the activity profile was determined by whether the active sites in the core needed a cocatalyst or not.

Abstract:A series of phosphine-containing cobalt complexes [CoCl2(PRPh2)(2), R = Ph (1), Cy (2), Pr-n (3), Et (4), Me (5), H (6)] has been used for the highly active and stereospecific polymerization of 1,3-butadiene upon activation with ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC). The high catalytic activities and polybutadienes with high cis-1,4 selectivity were obtained in the solution polymerization in toluene. The conversion of butadiene and the microstructure and molecular weight of the resulting polymers were affected by reaction parameters and the R group on the phosphine ligand. The dispersion medium was also a sensitive factor for the current catalytic systems, influencing the catalytic activity and properties of products. In comparison with the solution polymerization in toluene, the heterogeneous polymerization in isooctane yielded slightly lower catalytic activity, cis-1,4 content and molecular weight under similar reaction conditions.

Abstract:A family of rare earth metal bis(amide) complexes bearing monoanionic amidinate [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)](-) (R = cyclohexyl (Cy), phenyl (Ph)) as ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized. One-pot salt metathesis reaction of anhydrous LnCl(3) with one equivalent of amidinate lithium [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Li, following the introduction of two equivalents of NaN(SiMe(3))(2) in THF at room temperature afforded the neutral and unsolvated mono(amidinate) rare earth metal bis(amide) complexes [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (R = Cy (1); R = Ph (2)), and the "ate" mono(amidinate) rare earth metal bis(amide) complex [CyC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Lu[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(μ-Cl)Li(THF)(3) (3) in 61-72% isolated yields. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Single crystal structural determination revealed that the central metal in complexes 1 and 2 adopts a distorted tetrahedral geometry, and in complex 3 forms a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. In the presence of AlMe(3), and in combination with one equimolar amount of [Ph(3)C][B(C(6)F(5))(4)], complexes 1 and 2 showed high activity towards isoprene polymerization to give high molecular weight polyisoprene (M(n) > 10(4)) with good cis-1,4 selectivity (>90%).

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of polar functionalities into non-polar polymers represents a feasible strategy to tailor the polymer properties, and the direct metal-catalyzed coordination (co)polymerization of polar monomers is always a challenging topic. In this study, we have successfully realized the polymerization of 1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene derivates with diverse polar functionalities in the catalysis of rare-earth metal catalytic system, affording highly 3,4-regular polymers (> 99% 3,4-) with high molecular weights. Moreover, the copolymerization of 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-butadiene with 1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene was also smoothly realized, and the composition of resultant copolymer could be easily tailored by the initial comonomer feed ratio. NMR analysis and kinetic investigation suggested random microstructures of the final copolymers (rp-FPB = 1.66 and r1PB = 2.00).

Abstract:The study of rare earth coordination catalysts for polymerization of 1-octene has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of polymerization of 1-octene by Nd(naph)3-AlEt3 catalyst system in tetrachloro-methane are described. The overall polymerization activation energy E(a) measured was 74.5 kJ/mol and the rate equation could be expressed as R(p) = k(p) [Nd] [M] (k(p) = 3.21 X 10(-3) L/mol s, at 50-degrees-C). The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln (naph)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the polymerization was compared. A 1-octene oligomer with double bonds was obtained. It is either a white or pale yellow waxy semi-solid. Its number-average molecular weight is about 10(3) and the molecular weight distribution is less than 2.

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate was polymerized in toluene with a new rare-earth catalyst composed of rare-earth 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate, di-n-butylmagnesium, and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylethylene diamine. The influence of the catalyst components and reaction conditions on polymerization has been examined in detail. The results showed that the rare-earth catalyst has a high activity and can prepare poly(methyl methacrylate) with a high molecular weight at a low temperature (-18 degrees C). Abstract:Polyacetylene has been shown to be an electrical conductor in the metallic range when doped with various agents; hence, considerable attention has been focused on this macromolecule in both industrial and academic laboratories. A natural extension of these studies is the investigation of the polymerization of substituted alkynes. Only a few transition metal catalysts are known to produce high molecular weight polyacetylenes: e.g., ti(OC4H9)4/ Al(C2H5)3 for acetylene, Fe(acac)3/Al(i-C4H9)3 for alkylacetylenes, and WCl6 and MoCl5 for phenylacetylene and other 1-alkynes. This study reports the first example of a systematic investigation of rare earth compounds as catalysts for the polymerization o acetylene and 1-alkynes.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization of styrene oxide was successfully carried out by using new rare earth catalytic systems for the first time. It has been found that trinary rare earth coordination catalysts composed of neodymium 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate or calix[6]arene–neodymium, tri-isobutyl aluminum and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate are effective catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of styrene oxide. The dependence of polymerization on molar ratio of catalyst components (Al/Nd), solvent, polymerization temperature and time has been investigated. The polymers were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and GPC.

Abstract:The biphenol based discrete ion-pair rare earth complexes,[Ln(EDBP)_2(DME)Na(DME)_3][Ln=Er(1),Yb(2), Sm(3)],were prepared and used as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization(ROP)of 2,2-dimethyltrimethylene carbonate(DTC).Three complexes show moderate activities for the polymerization,and the catalytic activities increase in the following sequence:(Yb<Er<Sm).The effect of different ratios of[DTC]/[Ln],polymerization temperature and time on the polymerization was investigated.Moreover,PDTC without ether unit developed from possible CO_2 elimination was prepared.
Polar Molecules Regulating the Regio- and Stereoselectivity of Polymerization of Conjugated Dienes Catalyzed by CGC-Type Rare-Earth Metal Catalysts

Abstract:Herein, a concise, effective, and scalable strategy is reported that the introduction of polar molecules (PMs) (e.g., anisole (PhOMe), phenetole (PhOEt), 2-methoxynaphthalene (NaphOMe), thioanisole (PhSMe), and N,N-dimethylaniline (PhNMe2)) as continuously coordinated neutral ligand of cationic active species in situ generated from the constrain-geometry-configuration-type rare-earth metal complexes A-F/AliBu3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] ternary systems can easily switch the regio- and stereoselectivity of the polymerization of conjugated dienes (CDs, including 2-subsituted CDs such as isoprene (IP) and myrcene (MY), 1,2-disubstituted CD ocimene (OC), and 1-substituted polar CD 1-(para-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-butadiene (p-MOPB)) from poor selectivities to high selectivities (for IP and MY: 3,4-selectivity up to 99%; for OC: trans-1,2-selectivity up to 93% (mm up to 90%); for p-MOPB: 3,4-syndioselectivity (3,4- up to 99%, rrrr up to 96%)). DFT calculations explain the continuous coordination roles of PMs on the regulation of the regio- and stereoselectivity of the polymerization of CDs. In comparison with the traditional strategies, this strategy by adding some common PMs is easier and more convenient, decreasing the synthetic cost and complex operation of new metal catalyst and cocatalyst. Such regio- and stereoselective regulation method by using PMs is not reported for the coordination polymerization of olefins catalyzed by rare-earth metal and early transition metal complexes.
