Abstract:For photoreduction of CO2 into solar fuels driven by photocatalysis, a means to convert solar energy into chemical energy, a semiconductor photocatalyst with a specific crystal surface and high chemical stability is expected to achieve high activity and selectivity. Here, (110) facets exposed Zn2GeO4 nanorods with different aspect ratios were prepared by the ion exchange reaction between Na2GeO3 colloidal solution and various zinc salt solutions. The aspect ratio of Zn2GeO4 can be adjusted in the wide range from 2.5:1 to 20:1, depending on the acid radical. In this synthetic route, the Na2GeO3 precursor is a strong base, but strong acids such as HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 as by-products were formed, meaning that the Zn2GeO4 single-crystal nanorods have good chemical stability in acid as well as in base. The excellent hydrothermal stability for the Zn2GeO4 nanorods in NaOH solution provides a simple method to obtain a hydroxylated surface for high performance in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O to hydrocarbons fuels.

Abstract:Molten salt electrochemistry is cited as one of the most efficient ways to convert stable but unwanted CO2 into value-added chemical fuels and functional materials, in particular carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In this work, we report the high yield and scalable CO2-deriving CNTs by adding ZnO to molten carbonate electrolyte. The physicochemical properties such as crystal structure, morphology and element composition of the carbon products were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Raman spectrometer (Raman). It is demonstrated that an appropriate amount of ZnO additives can greatly increase the content of CNTs in carbon products. However, the micromorphology and microstructure of the carbon products are found to be significantly changed when the ZnO content is insufficient or excessive. Compared with molten salt electrolyte without ZnO, ZnO-included electrolyte endows CNTs with a higher degree of graphitization and crystallinity. This work demonstrates the feasibility of improving CNTs content in carbon products and lowering required energy for CNTs production by adding ZnO as a promoter.

Abstract:Nanocrystals (NCs) of refractory oxides are widely used in both industry and fundamental research, despite their strong covalent bonding posing a serious obstacle to crystallisation under moderate liquid-phase environments. Here, we demonstrate a facile high-liquid-phase synthetic route for the fabrication of a refractory oxide, ZrO2, by employing molten metal chloride salt as the liquid reaction medium. The molten-salt-derived ZrO2 NCs exhibit an average size of approximately 120 nm with a limited size distribution. We also show that the molten-salt process allows for the direct doping of ZrO2 NCs with rare earth (RE) ions using soluble salt precursors, which results in the strong photoluminescence of the products. These luminescent refractory oxides based on RE-doped ZrO2 could be promising candidates for high-temperature sensing applications in industry. Furthermore, the molten-salt process could be generalised for the production of refractory metal oxide NCs that are otherwise not easily produced by ordinary wet-chemistry processes.

Oxygen-Doped Red Carbon Nitride: Enhanced Charge Separation and Light Absorption for Robust CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:The ultimate goal of photocatalytic CO2 reduction is to efficiently convert atmospheric CO2 into value-added products by designing hierarchical photocatalysts that combine effective harvesting and accelerate activation capabilities of CO2 molecules. In this work, we demonstrated direct air -level CO2 reduction by hollow multishell structure (HoMS) nanoreactors with zeolitic imidazolate framework -8 (ZIF-8)-modified ZnO heteroshells, which offers a promising solution to optimize the mass transfer process via selective sieving and effective enrichment of CO2 molecules from the atmospheric environments. Specifically, heteroshells with ZIF-8 matrix act as pumps that effectively capture CO2 molecules, while the cavities serve as tanks to hold these molecules, thus significantly enhancing the transfer kinetics for CO2 photoreduction. The periodic shell -cavity configuration allows the nanoreactor to effectively gather CO2 molecules near the catalytic sites, thus increasing conversion opportunities for activated molecules. Simultaneously, the surface atomic steps on the ZnO/ZIF-8 heterointerfaces with staggered geometry expedite charge transfer and adsorption efficiency, which synergistically boosts the CO2-CO yield up to 3.7 mu mol/h under CO2 flow and 0.7 mu mol/h under atmospheric conditions with almost complete CO selectivity. Hopefully, the HoMS nanoreactors offer a potential strategy for solving the "last mile" challenge in practical CO2 valorization. Abstract:Controlled incorporation of single atoms in a suitable host matrix can result in a radical transformation in catalytic properties. However, finding a straightforward synthetic strategy that offers a compelling combination of solution processing, atomic doping and a matching host is still a grand challenge. Here, a spontaneous heteroatom formation of atomic Zn sites in well‐defined wurtzite CoO nanorods, delivering high photoreduction rates, reaching 86.7 µmol g−1 h−1 for CO and 31.4 µmol g−1 h−1 for CH4 production is reported. Based on the validation of atomic Zn sites structures, catalytic process tracking via in situ/ex situ spectroscopic probes, and related structural simulations, a good description of the catalytic reaction kinetics for Zn/CoO as a function of applied potential is established, revealing how the single doping sites influence the CO2 photoreduction. Controlled incorporation of atomic Zn‐sites in suitable wurtzite–CoO matrices result in radical transformations of catalytic properties: the Zn‐doping results in optimization of band structure and enhancement in CO2 chemisorption. The catalytic reaction kinetics for Zn/CoO as a function of applied potential are established, revealing that single active sites engineering is an efficient means to modulate the CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:To realize practical applications of the photocatalysis technique, it is necessary to synthesize semiconductor photocatalysts with specific facets that induce high reactive activities and high reactive selectivity. However, a challenge lies in the synthesis of metal oxides containing more than one type of metal with specific facets. Usually, surfactants are used to control the crystal morphology, which induces surface contamination for the final products. Here, using the GaOOH nanoplate as precursor, ZnGa2O4 nanocubes with exposed {100} facets are synthesized by an hydrothermal ion‐exchange route without requiring the introduction of morphology controlling agents. These ZnGa2O4 nanocubes exhibit improved performance in the photoreduction of CO2 into CH4 or water splitting into hydrogen. Theoretical calculations indicates that the light‐hole effective mass on the {100} facets of ZnGa2O4 corresponds to the high hole mobility, which contributes to the efficient water oxidation to offer the protons for promoting CO2 photoreduction into hydrocarbon fuels.
Universal Formation of Single Atoms from Molten Salt for Facilitating Selective CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Clarifying the formation mechanism of single‐atom sites guides the design of emerging single‐atom catalysts (SACs) and facilitates the identification of the active sites at atomic scale. Herein, we develop a molten‐salt atomization strategy for synthesizing zinc (Zn) SACs with temperature universality from 400 to 1000/1100 °C and an evolved coordination from Zn‐N2Cl2 to Zn‐N4. The electrochemical tests and in‐situ attenuated total reflectance‐surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy confirm that the Zn‐N4 atomic sites are active for electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion to carbon monoxide (CO). In a strongly acidic medium (0.2 M K2SO4, pH°=°1), the Zn SAC formed at 1000 °C (Zn1NC) containing Zn‐N4 sites enables highly selective CO2 electroreduction to CO, with nearly 100% selectivity toward CO product in a wide current density range of 100 to 600 mA cm−2. During a 50‐h continuous electrolysis at the industrial current density of 200 mA cm−2, Zn1NC achieves Faradaic efficiencies greater than 95% for CO product. Our work presents a temperature‐universal formation of single‐atom sites, which provides a novel platform for unraveling the active sites in Zn SACs for CO2 electroreduction and extends the synthesis of SACs with controllable coordination sites. Dissolution of g‐C3N4 Using Zinc Chloride Molten Salt Hydrates for Nanobelt Fabrication and Photocatalytic H2O2 Production

Abstract:Graphitic‐carbon nitride (g‐C3N4), a metal‐free two‐dimensional layered semiconductor material, holds great potential for energy conversion, environmental remediation, and sensing. However, the limited solubility of g‐C3N4 in conventional solvents hinders its widespread application. Improving the dissolution of g‐C3N4 in the liquid phase is highly desired but challenging. Herein, we report an innovative approach to dissolve g‐C3N4 using ZnCl2 molten salt hydrates. The solubility of g‐C3N4 in the solution reaches up to 200 mg mL‐1. Density functional theory (DFT) results suggest that ZnCl+H2O is the key species that leads to charge redistribution on g‐C3N4 surface and promotes the dissolution of carbon nitride in the solution. Furthermore, through dilution, the dissolved carbon nitride can be effectively recovered while maintaining its intrinsic chemical structure. The resultant regenerated C3N4 (r‐C3N4) exhibits nanobelt morphology and demonstrates a substantially improved photocatalytic activity in H2O2 production. The rate of H2O2 production over the r‐ C3N4 reaches 20,228 μmol g‐1 h‐1, which is 6.2 times higher than that of pristine g‐C3N4. This green and efficient dissolution route of g‐C3N4 offers an effective approach for its diverse applications.

Abstract:The orthorhombic polymorph of Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGS) is a metastable wurtzite-derived phase that can only be prepared in the bulk form by extensive heating at high temperatures (≥790 °C) when using the conventional solid-state reaction route. By employing a facile solution-based synthetic strategy, we were able to obtain phase-pure orthorhombic CZGS in nanocrystalline form at a much lower reaction temperature. Prior to this work, the colloidal synthesis of single-phase orthorhombic CZGS on the nanoscale has never been reported. We find that the use of an appropriate combination of coordinating solvents and precursors is crucial to the sole formation of this metastable phase in solution. A possible formation mechanism is proposed on the basis of our experimental results. Because CZGS consists of environmentally benign metal components, it is regarded as a promising alternative material to the technologically useful yet toxic cadmium-containing semiconductors. The orthorhombic CZGS nanocrystals display strong photon absorption in the visible spectrum and are photocatalytically active in dye degradation under visible-light illumination.

Abstract:Sheaf-like, hyperbranched Zn2GeO4 nanoarchitectures were successfully synthesized in a binary ethylenediamine (En)/water solvent system using a solvothermal route. These structures may be assigned to the splitting crystal growth mechanism, resembling some minerals observed in nature. Addition of increasing amounts of En was found to enhance the degree of crystal splitting. Nitridation of the resulting Zn2GeO4 superstructures under NH3 flow produced yellow Zn1.7GeN1.8O solid solution, which allows photocatalytically converse CO2 into hydrocarbon fuel (CH4) in the presence of H2O at ambient conditions under visible light irradiation.
General Route to Zno Nanorod Arrays on Conducting Substrates Via Galvanic-Cell-Based Approach

Abstract:Wurtzite ZnO nanorod exhibits many unique properties, which make it promising for various optoelectronic applications. To grow well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays on various substrates, a seed layer is usually required to improve the density and vertical alignment. The reported works about seedless hydrothermal synthesis either require special substrates, or require external electrical field to enhance the ZnO nucleation. Here, we report a general method for the one-pot synthesis of homogenous and well-aligned ZnO nanorods on common conducting substrates without a seed layer. This method, based on the galvanic-cell structure, makes use of the contact potential between different materials as the driving force for ZnO growth. It is applicable to different conducting substrates at low temperature. More importantly, the as-grown ZnO nanorods show enhanced photoelectric response. This unique large scale low-temperature processing method could be of great importance for the application of ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Atomically thin Zn2GeO4 (ZGO) nanoribbons exclusively exposing the {100} facet of similar to 1 nm in thickness were successfully prepared via convenient photo-oxidation exfolia-tion of the ZGO-ethylenediamine hybrid at room temperature. The ultrathin ZGO nanoribbons [abbreviated as ZGO(100)] exhibit efficient and dominantly selective CO2 photoreduction performance into CO with the evolution yield of up to 20.81 mu mol g-1 h-1 in the presence of water vapor, in much contrast to only CH4 production of 0.67 mu mol g-1 h-1 for (010), exposing the thick ZGO nanobelts reported previously. The atomically thin structure of ZGO(100) shortens the migration distance of charge carriers onto the surface from the interior and allows more electrons to survive and accumulate on the surface, thus benefiting the activation and reduction of CO2. The density function theory calculation reveals that the formed CO* is inclined to escape from the exclusively exposed {100} facet of the ultrathin ZGO nanoribbon rather than be further protonated to derive CHO*, a vital intermediate for CH4 formation, leading ZGO(100) to be an ideal platform for catalytically selective CO production. This work would not only enrich atomically thin catalyst materials but also render a new platform for the development of ternary semiconductors with outstanding performance in CO2 photoconversion.
The Kirkendall Effect Towards Oxynitride Nanotubes with Improved Visible Light Driven Conversion of CO2 into CH4.

Abstract:Functional hollow nanomaterials are of great interest due to their unique physical-chemical properties. Oxynitride photocatalysts are a kind of promising material for solar energy conversion. However, nanoscale design of hollow oxynitrides was difficult to achieve due to the thermal instability of oxide precursors at high temperature. Here, single crystal zinc gallium oxynitride nanotubes were successfully synthesized via the Kirkendall effect with ZnO nanorods and Ga2O3 nanosheets as precursors, which can be attributed to the high diffusion rate of ZnO and the high melting point of oxynitride. Enhanced photocatalytic performance in CO2 reduction was achieved over the as-prepared ZnGaNO nanotubes, due to their higher specific surface area and less recombination of the photogenerated carriers. These results are expected to provide new guidance in the design and preparation of highly efficient nano-scaled oxynitride photocatalysts.

Abstract:Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn4 Si2 O7 Cl2 . We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids.

Herein, metal‐organic‐framework (MOF)‐derived hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen and carbon co‐doped ZnO (N‐C‐ZnO) structures have been developed as nanoreactors with decorated CoOx nanoclusters for CO2‐to‐CO conversion driven by visible light. Introduction of hierarchical nanoarchitectures with highly ordered interconnected meso‐macroporous channels shows beneficial properties for photocatalytic reduction reactions, including enhanced mobility of charge carriers throughout the highly accessible framework, maximized exposure of active sites and inhibited recombination of photo‐induced photons. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal the key role of CoOx nanoclusters with high affinity to CO2 molecules, and the Co‐O bond formed on the surface of the composite exhibits stronger charge redistribution. As a result, the obtained CoOx/N‐C‐ZnO demonstrates enhanced photocatalysis performance in terms of high CO yield and long‐term stability. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:Single‐crystalline nanobelts of the title compound with lengths of hundreds of micrometers, thickness as small as ≈7 nm, and aspect ratios of up to 10000 are solvothermally synthesized in high yields from a mixture of GeO 2 and Zn(OAc) 2 in an en/H 2 O (2:1) mixed solvent (autoclave, 180 °C, 24 h).
