Abstract:Hierarchical LiFePO4 crystals self-assembled with subunits were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) curve indicates the highly crystalline nature of the prepared samples. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that with increased KOH concentrations, the LiFePO4 products evoluted from microspheres self-assembled with microwires to spindle-like structures self-assembled with micro-needles and eventually to flower-like hierarchical nanostructures self-assembled with nanorods. The crystal growth mechanism could be explained by the synergetic effect of pH value and the surface-adsorbed K+ ions. The OH– anions represent pH value dominate the hierarchical morphology under both low and high KOH concentration, while K+ ions play the major role in synthesizing monodispersed LiFePO4 nanorods under medium KOH concentration. Moreover, charge–discharge curves and CV measurements demonstrated good reversible capacities and stable cycle performances of the LFP/C samples.

Abstract:As an important battery cathode material, reaction distribution inlithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) has been extensively studied in dispersedparticle systems, but remains poorly understood for mesoscopic agglomerates (orsecondary particles) that are used in most commercial batteries. Herein, we applythree-dimensional X-ray spectroscopic imaging to characterize the two-phasestructure in LiFePO4secondary particles during electrochemical cycling.(De)lithiated domains are found to not form the commonly assumed core-shell structure but develop highly anisotropicfilamentary morphology that is rateindependent and symmetric between charging and discharging. Phase-fieldsimulations elucidate that the observed 1D phase growth behavior is not causedby the 1D lithium diffusivity of LiFePO4but the elastic interaction between primary particles, which gives rise to strongerreaction heterogeneity than dispersed nanoparticles. As a result, uniform lithium (de)intercalation does not occur on thesecondary particle surface even at high cycling rates.

Abstract:Perovskite lead titanate crystals with various morphologies were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction route with different lead sources. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were employed to characterize the phase composition and the morphology of the synthesized products. In order to investigate the effect of the lead source on the phase formation and morphology evolution of the synthesized pervoskite PbTiO3 crystals, PbO, PbF2, PbSO4 and Pb (CH3COO)3 ·3H2O, were used as starting precursor lead source introduced into the hydrothermal reaction system, respectively. Accordingly, perovskite PbTiO3 brken cubes, irregular particles, cubic particles, and microplates were obtained, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the effect of lead source was simply discussed.

Abstract:A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) olivine cathode displays rich phase transition behavior during charging/discharging. Despite extensive studies, the evolution of the LiFePO4/FePO4 two-phase coexistence structure and the underlying mechanism are still a point of debate due to the intricate and often disparate phase morphologies observed. Here we apply phase-field simulations to provide detailed insights into the three-dimensional phase evolution process in LiFePO4 upon delithiation under a large driving force. The simulation reveals that the coherency stress arising from the LiFePO4/FePO4 lattice mismatch destabilizes the initially flat delithiation front and induces filamentary growth of the FePO4 phase along [010], which is in excellent agreement with a recent operando X-ray imaging study [Ohmer et al. Nature Communications6, 6045 (2015)]. The combined simulation and experimental results provide the first illustration of the phenomenon of stress-induced instability of the lithium (de)intercalation front in battery electrode compounds. We show that this phenomenon is facilitated by the surface mode of coherent spinodal decomposition in LiFePO4 and influenced by the anisotropies of misfit strain, elasticity and lithium diffusion. It is detrimental to battery performance and life by causing stress concentration and reducing the lithium (de)intercalation kinetics and thus should be mitigated.

Abstract:[100](Pnma) is believed to be a tough diffusion direction for Li+ in LiFePO4, leading to the belief that the rate performance of [100]-oriented LiFePO4 is poor. Recent work revealed that reducing the dimension of the LiFePO4 phase to 12 nm in the [100] direction increased the extent of Li solid solution between LiFePO4 and FePO4, which produced an increase in the active population and excellent rate performance, but the lithiation/delithiation mechanism for this interesting phenomenon remains to be unraveled. Here we report, by using operando X-ray diffraction, the phase transition path involved in the lithiation/delithiation process is single-phase featured. This work presents one of the first experimental demonstrations that decreasing the dimension of LiFePO4 in the [100] direction to the LiFePO4/FePO4 equilibrium phase boundary width can improve the solid solubility of both the end solid solutions (Li alpha FePO4 and Li1-beta FePO4) and decrease the miscibility gap of LiFePO4, demonstrating a highly orientation-dependent lithium miscibility gap.

Abstract:The effects of citric acid (CA) and ammonium (NH4+) ions on the structural and morphological transformations of olivine LiFePO4 upon hydrothermal treatment are systematically investigated, as a function of reaction time, by using a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), and Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR). In the presence of both CA and NH4+ ions, the structures evolve from amorphous precursors to crystalline (NH4)FePO4 center dot H2O and finally LiFePO4. The initial olivine particles adopt an egglike shape and appear to form from the fusing of (NH4)FePO4 center dot H2O plates. This metastable morphology evolves to form a mixture of cubic and rhombic particles. These particles are then etched, resulting in hollow structures and then ultimately barrel-like particles, after over 120 h of hydrothermal reaction at 180 degrees C. The final morphology is close to the equilibrium structure proposed by Islam et al. [Fisher, C. A. J.; Islam, M. S. J. Mater. Chem. 2008, 18, 1209]. The presence of NH4+ ions (as detected by FTIR) adsorbed on the surfaces of these particles, seems to slow growth along certain directions, resulting in cubic/rhombic-shaped particles. The formation of hollow particles is ascribed to the opposing effects of etching (from CA) and surface protection (from NH4+). The electrochemical performances vary significantly with particle shape. The hollow and roughened spindle-like particles (formed in the absence of NH4+ ions) exhibit superior electrochemical properties, compared to the other particles, because of their higher specific surface areas and shorter Li+ ion diffusion lengths. The facile synthesis of olivine LiFePO4 particles with very different morphologies provides an interesting platform for further fundamental investigation into the shape-dependent electrochemical performance and electrochemical lithium intercalation and deintercalation mechanisms of olivine LiFePO4.

Abstract:Olivine lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is a technologically important electrode material for lithium-ion batteries and a model system for studying electrochemically-driven phase transformations. Despite extensive studies, many aspects of the phase transformation and Li transport in LiFePO4 are still not well understood. Here we combine operando hard X-ray spectroscopic imaging and phase-field modeling to elucidate the delithiation dynamics of single-crystal LiFePO4 microrods with long-axis along the [010] direction. Our study reveals two-dimensional Li diffusivity in microsized LiFePO4 particles containing ~3% Li-Fe antisite defects and provides direct evidence for the previously predicted surface-reaction-limited phase boundary migration mechanism for the first time. Further, a new hybrid mode of phase growth is discovered, in which phase boundary movement is controlled by surface reaction or Li diffusion in different crystallographic directions. These findings uncover the rich phase transformation behaviors in LiFePO4 and intercalation compounds in general and can help the design of better electrodes. Abstract:The single-crystal LiFePO4was synthesized by Guilin hydrothermal method, and the single crystal of lithium iron phosphate was prepared.The single crystal has a six-prism structure or a crystal with a round shape, isometric appearance.XRD patterns of the single-crystal LiFePO4was obtained by the experiment.In 10°to 40°strong within the scope of the main peak,compared with nm level lithium iron phosphate,mm leve crystal has one more(020)surface.It is indicate that in the later period of crystal growth, mainly controlled by(020)surface, the main six prismatic properties are ending at (010),(200),(101)surfaces of three,these advantages face this is expected to be in the exchange of electrochemistry and surface properties play an important role.Based on the analysis of LiFePO4crystal structure,the geometrical environment of lithium ion diffusion in lithium iron phosphate was analyzed. The lithium ion is diffused in the direction of(010),so it is possible to propose the design synthesis to reduce the axis of the b axis.To expand the 2-dimensional flaky structure of the ac direction of LiFePO 4. It is expected to increase the diffusion rate of lithium ions, thus improving the conductivity, multiplier performance and low temperature performance of LiFePO 4materials.Selected by the single crystal of LiFePO4in ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum wavelength range, known LiFePO4large absorption in the uv area.There is a wide band in the visible area,with a smaller absorption value,and the majority of the light passes through,which is why the color of LiFePO 4single crystal is not deep.The hydrothermal growth of LiFePO4crystals has a good permeability.The color center caused by the point defect of the synthesized LiFePO4crystal is absorbed by the light of the near infrared short-wave part 980-1700 nm wavelength, and the near-infrared long wave 1750-3000 nm light is all filtered through.The high symmetry absorption and transmission of LiFePO 4crystals 1000-3000 nm wavelength will make a breakthrough in the application of near-infrared band window devices.

Abstract:The formation mechanism and growth habit of olivine-LiFePO4 material by hydrothermal synthesis are investigated by calculating the stability energy of the crystal growth unit on the basis of anion coordination polyhedron model and molecular simulation. The binding energy of a growth unit and the dehydration reactions among growth units are calculated to reveal the crystal nucleation process. The crystal growth habit is predicted by evaluating stability energies of growth units on the {200}, {101}, {210}, {011}, {020} and {002} faces. The effects of pH on nucleation, morphology and crystal habit of olivine-LiFePO4 crystalline under hydrothermal condition, are explained relevantly according to its effect on the formation of various growth units. The understanding on olivine-LiFePO4 formation and crystal growth in hydrothermal process is of great significance for controllable synthesis of high performance LiFePO4 cathode materials.
Model for the Particle Size, Overpotential, and Strain Dependence of Phase Transition Pathways in Storage Electrodes: Application to Nanoscale Olivines

Abstract:In the drive toward improved electrical energy storage for applications ranging from wireless devices to electric vehicles to grid stabilization, nanoscale materials are of growing interest as ion storage electrodes. Nanoscale olivines based on LiMPO4 (M = Fe, Mn, Co, Ni) are one class of compounds for which recent experimental developments reveal very different phase transition and solid-solubility behavior compared to larger particles. The olivines may be an exemplar for generalized behavior for which metastable crystalline or amorphous phases are produced under the large driving forces incurred during electrochemical reactions. Here we use a diffuse-interface thermodynamic model to assess the conditions under which amorphous phase transitions may occur in nanoscale LiMPO4 particles. There are three central conclusions. First, assuming as with similar solids that the amorphous phase has the lower surface energy, it is found that an initially crystalline phase may undergo amorphization during cycling when the particle size is below a critical value. Second, the effect of applied electrical overpotentials on the phase stability is evaluated for the first time, and is found to strongly influence the phase transition pathways of small particles. Third, the tendency to amorphize is significantly affected by the magnitude of the misfit strain between the lithiated and delithiated crystalline phases. It is shown that there exists a critical misfit strain above which the preferred transformation pathway is amorphization, regardless of the particle size. We use these results to interpret experimentally observed behavior of olivines, including data that up to now have been unexplained.

Abstract:High-pure and well-crystalline nano-LiFePO_4 was prepared by hydrothermal method using analytically pure FeSO_4,H_3PO_4 and LiOH as the precursors.The results through XRD and SEM analyses show that,with the increase of the reaction temperature from 120℃ to 150℃ and time from 5h to 15h,the synthesized LiFePO_4 particles grow from the irregular congeries of nano-crystals to the rectangular slAbs with thickness of about 200nm and side-length of(about) 800nm.The intermediate product Li_3PO_4 is first synthesized during the reaction,then it reacts with Fe~(2+) to form the high-pure LiFePO_4.A reversible capacity of 163mA·h·g~(-1) at 0.05C or 144mA·h·g~(-1) at(0.5C) has been obtained after the carbon coated with LiFePO_4 is prepared by decomposing polypropylene with the LiFePO_4 powders at 550℃.

Abstract:A solvothermal process was used to synthesize LiFePO4 nanomaterials for lithium ion batteries. Reaction parameters such as reaction temperature and residence time were explored to obtain the optimal LiFePO4 sample. A three-stage reaction mechanism is proposed to better understand the solvothermal synthesis process. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy were used to investigate the prepared samples under different conditions. The LiFePO4 formation reaction occurred at a temperature as low as 89 degrees C. Defect analysis results showed that after 4 h of solvothermal treatment the concentration of lithium vacancy and Li-Fe antisite defects was too low to be detected. The charge discharge data of the obtained LiFePO4 showed that the carbon-coated LiFePO4 samples prepared at 180 degrees C after 4 h of solvothermal treatment had a discharge capacity of 160.6 mA h g(-1) at a discharge rate of 0.1C and 129.6 mA h g(-1) at 10C.

Abstract:The spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) material is considered as a promising cathode in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries due to its advantageous voltage and capacity. Previous results indicate that the electrodes constructed by LNMO with the same compositions while differing in the crystallite geometries always exhibit various electrochemical performances. Here, to probe the relationships between the crystalline geometry of the obtained cathodes and their electrochemical properties, we synthesized different facet-exposed LNMOs with the same compositions using a template method. We demonstrate that the crystallite geometries of the hydroxide precursors can be tuned easily via varying the synthesize parameters, while the tuned precursors can be employed as the templates during the final product preparation. LNMOs enclosed by single {111} facets (LNMO-OH) and both {110} and {100} facets (LNMO-HP) are obtained and employed to elucidate the particle geometry-dependent electrochemical properties. Despite better rate capabilities exhibited for LNMO-HP because of the higher lithium diffusion coefficients along these crystal orientations, inferior cycling performance is released compared with its LNMO-OH counterpart. These insights can provide informative guidance in particle geometry-dependent material construction, thus helpful in realizing high-performance LNMO cathode.

Effect of Morphology of Iron Phosphate Precursors on the Electrochemical Performance of Lithium Iron Phosphate

Abstract:The iron phosphate precursors were prepared by precipitation method and hydrothermal synthesis method,and then LiFePO 4/C was synthesized by carbothermal reduction method.The effect of morphology of iron phosphate on the electrochemical performance of lithium iron phosphate was investigated.The characterization on the structure and morphology was carried out by XRD and SEM.The results indicate that with the longer time of the hydrothermal reaction,the crystallinity of the iron phosphate was better,the particles of iron phosphate became spherical,and the LiFePO 4/C had better the electrochemical performance.However,when the synthesis temperature reached 180 ℃,the particles became ellipsoidal and the LiFePO 4/C had a high discharge capacity on the contrary.All of the Lithium iron phosphate prepared by the iron phosphate precursors were homogeneous phase with olivine structure, but the different morphology resulted to different electrochemical performance of the LiFePO 4/C.The morphology of iron phosphate precursor effected the electrochemical property of the LiFePO 4/C,but it's not the key point factor.

Abstract:As an important battery cathode material, reaction distribution in lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) has been extensively studied in dispersed particle systems, but remains poorly understood for mesoscopic agglomerates (or secondary particles) that are used in most commercial batteries. Herein, we apply three-dimensional X-ray spectroscopic imaging to characterize the two-phase structure in LiFePO4 secondary particles during electrochemical cycling. (De)lithiated domains are found to not form the commonly assumed core–shell structure but develop highly anisotropic filamentary morphology that is rate independent and symmetric between charging and discharging. Phase-field simulations elucidate that the observed 1D phase growth behavior is not caused by the 1D lithium diffusivity of LiFePO4 but the elastic interaction between primary particles, which gives rise to stronger reaction heterogeneity than dispersed nanoparticles. Abstract:In this paper, ZnO microcrystals with diverse morphologies were successfully fabricated via solution routes. The obtained ZnO with different morphologies, such as flower-, snow flake-, prism-, prickly sphere- and rod-like patterns, were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The influences of the solvent, temperature and pH value on the morphology of ZnO were investigated, and the possible growth mechanism was also afforded. This paper may present the promising method for the preparation of oxides with controlled morphologies.
