Abstract:In their work [9], Feng Luo and Richard Stong introduced the concept of the average edge order, denoted as $\mu_0(K)$. They demonstrated that if $\mu_0(K)\leq \frac{9}{2}$ for a closed $3$-manifold $K$, then $K$ must be a sphere. Building upon this foundation, Makoto Tamura extended similar results to $3$-manifolds with non-empty boundaries in [10, 11]. In our present study, we extend these findings to normal $3$-pseudomanifolds. Specifically, we establish that for a normal $3$-pseudomanifold $K$ with singularities, $\mu_0(K)\geq\frac{30}{7}$. Moreover, equality holds if and only if $K$ is a one-vertex suspension of $\mathbb{RP}^2$ with seven vertices. Furthermore, we establish that when $\frac{30}{7}\leq\mu_0(K)\leq\frac{9}{2}$, the $3$-pseudomanifold $K$ can be derived from some boundary complexes of $4$-simplices by a sequence of possible operations, including connected sums, bistellar $1$-moves, edge contractions, edge expansions, vertex folding, and edge folding. In the end, we discuss some normal $3$-pseudomanifolds exhibiting higher average edge orders.

Abstract:0-efficient triangulations of 3-manifolds are defined and studied. It is shown that any triangulation of a closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold M can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation or M can be shown to be one of the manifolds S3,ℝP3 or L(3, 1). Similarly, any triangulation of a compact, orientable, irreducible, ∂-irreducible 3-manifold can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation. The notion of a 0-efficient ideal triangulation is defined. It is shown if M is a compact, orientable, irreducible, ∂-irreducible 3-manifold having no essential annuli and distinct from the 3-cell, then \ring M admits an ideal triangulation; furthermore, it is shown that any ideal triangulation of such a 3-manifold can be modified to a 0-efficient ideal triangulation. A 0-efficient triangulation of a closed manifold has only one vertex or the manifold is S3 and the triangulation has precisely two vertices. 0-efficient triangulations of 3-manifolds with boundary, and distinct from the 3-cell, have all their vertices in the boundary and then just one vertex in each boundary component. As tools, we introduce the concepts of barrier surface and shrinking, as well as the notion of crushing a triangulation along a normal surface. A number of applications are given, including an algorithm to construct an irreducible decomposition of a closed, orientable 3-manifold, an algorithm to construct a maximal collection of pairwise disjoint, normal 2-spheres in a closed 3-manifold, an alternate algorithm for the 3-sphere recognition problem, results on edges of low valence in minimal triangulations of 3-manifolds, and a construction of irreducible knots in closed 3-manifolds.

Face numbers of triangulations of manifolds

Abstract:In this paper we discuss face numbers of generalised triangulations of manifolds in arbitrary dimensions. This is motivated by the study of triangulations of simply connected $4$-manifolds: We observe that, for a triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of a simply connected $4$-manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with $n$ pentachora, an upper bound on the number of vertices $v$ of $\mathcal{T}$ as a function of $n$ yields a lower bound for $n$ depending only on the second Betti number $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$ of $\mathcal{M}$. Within this framework we conjecture that $v \leq \frac{n}{2}+4$, implying $n \geq 2\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$. In forthcoming work by the authors, this conjectured bound is shown to be almost tight for all values of $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$, with a gap of at most two.

634 vertex-transitive and more than $10^{103}$ non-vertex-transitive 27-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane

Abstract:In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any combinatorial $d$-manifold with less than $3d/2+3$ vertices is PL homeomorphic to the sphere and any combinatorial $d$-manifold with exactly $3d/2+3$ vertices is PL homeomorphic to either the sphere or a manifold like a projective plane in the sense of Eells and Kuiper. The latter possibility may occur for $d\in\{2,4,8,16\}$ only. There exist a unique $6$-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{RP}^2$, a unique $9$-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and at least three $15$-vertex triangulations of $\mathbb{HP}^2$. However, until now, the question of whether there exists a $27$-vertex triangulation of a manifold like the octonionic projective plane has remained open. We solve this problem by constructing a lot of examples of such triangulations. Namely, we construct $634$ vertex-transitive $27$-vertex combinatorial $16$-manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Four of them have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ of order $351$, and the other $630$ have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3$ of order $27$. Further, we construct more than $10^{103}$ non-vertex-transitive $27$-vertex combinatorial $16$-manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Most of them have trivial symmetry group, but there are also symmetry groups $\mathrm{C}_3$, $\mathrm{C}_3^2$, and $\mathrm{C}_{13}$. We conjecture that all the triangulations constructed are PL homeomorphic to the octonionic projective plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. Nevertheless, we have no proof of this fact so far.

Abstract:We prove that for a compact 3-manifold M with boundary admitting an ideal triangulation T with valence at least 10 at all edges, there exists a unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, so that T is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of M. Our approach is to use a variant of the combinatorial Ricci flow introduced by Luo (Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 11 (2005) 12-20) for pseudo-3-manifolds. In this case, we prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to the hyperbolic metric exponentially fast.

Abstract:The Heegaard genus is a fundamental invariant of 3-manifolds. However, computing the Heegaard genus of a triangulated 3-manifold is NP-hard, and while algorithms exist, little work has been done in making such an algorithm efficient and practical for implementation. Current algorithms use almost normal surfaces, which are an extension of the algorithm-friendly normal surface theory but which add considerable complexity for both running time and implementation.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is the graph of a connected triangulated $(d-1)$-manifold, for $d\geq 3$, then $G$ is generically globally rigid in $\mathbb R^d$ if and only if it is $(d+1)$-connected and, if $d=3$, $G$ is not planar. The special case $d=3$ verifies a conjecture of Connelly. Our results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also give two significant applications of our main theorems. We show that that the characterisation of pseudomanifolds with extremal edge numbers given by the Lower Bound Theorem extends to circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also prove the generic case of a conjecture of Kalai concerning the reconstructability of a polytope from its space of stresses. The proofs of our main results adapt earlier ideas of Fogelsanger and Whiteley to the setting of global rigidity. In particular we verify a special case of Whiteley's vertex splitting conjecture for global rigidity.

Abstract:We prove that for any knot $K$, there exists a one-vertex triangulation of the $3$-sphere containing an edge forming $K$. The proof is constructive, and based on fully augmented links. We use our method to produce ``complicated'' simplicial triangulations of the $3$-sphere that we show are smallest possible, up to a constant multiplicative factor.

Abstract:Motivated by Guo-Luo's generalized circle packings on surfaces with boundary \cite{GL2}, we introduce the generalized Thurston's sphere packings on 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary. Then we investigate the rigidity of the generalized Thurston's sphere packings. We prove that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings are locally determined by the combinatorial scalar curvatures. We further prove the infinitesimal rigidity that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings can not be deformed while keeping the combinatorial Ricci curvatures fixed.

Abstract:The sphere graph of $M_r$, a connect sum of $r$ copies of $S^1\times S^2$ was introduced by Hatcher as an analog of the curve graph of a surface to study the outer automorphism group of a free group $F_r$. Bestvina, Bromberg, and Fujiwara proved that the chromatic number of the curve graph is finite; bounds were subsequently improved by Gaster, Greene, and Vlamis. Motivated by the analogy, we provide upper and lower bounds for the chromatic number of the sphere graph of $M_r$. As a corollary to the prime decomposition of 3-manifolds, this gives bounds on the chromatic number of the sphere graph for any orientable 3-manifold.

On possible symmetry groups of 27-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane

Abstract:In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any triangulation of a $d$-manifold (without boundary) that is not homeomorphic to the sphere has at least $3d/2+3$ vertices. Moreover, triangulations with exactly $3d/2+3$ vertices may exist only for `manifolds like projective planes', which can have dimensions $2$, $4$, $8$, and $16$ only. There is a $6$-vertex triangulation of the real projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$, a $9$-vertex triangulation of the complex projective plane $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and $15$-vertex triangulations of the quaternionic projective plane $\mathbb{HP}^2$. Recently, the author has constructed first examples of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. The four most symmetrical have symmetry group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ of order $351$. These triangulations were constructed using a computer program after the symmetry group was guessed. However, it remained unclear why exactly this group is realized as the symmetry group and whether $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like $\mathbb{OP}^2$ exist with other (possibly larger) symmetry groups. In this paper we find strong restrictions on symmetry groups of such $27$-vertex triangulations. Namely, we present a list of $26$ subgroups of $\mathrm{S}_{27}$ containing all possible symmetry groups of $27$-vertex triangulations of manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. (We do not know whether all these subgroups can be realized as symmetry groups.) The group $\mathrm{C}_3^3\rtimes \mathrm{C}_{13}$ is the largest group in this list, and the orders of all other groups do not exceed $52$. A key role in our approach is played by the use of Smith and Bredon's results on the topology of fixed point sets of finite transformation groups.

Triangulated 3-Manifolds: from Haken's normal surfaces to Thurston's algebraic equation

Abstract: We give a brief summary of some of our work and our joint work with Stephan Tillmann on solving Thurston's equation and Haken equation on triangulated 3-manifolds in this paper. Several conjectures on the existence of solutions to Thurston's equation and Haken equation are made. Resolutions of these conjecture will lead to a new proof of the Poincar\'e conjecture without using the Ricci flow. We approach these conjectures by a finite dimensional variational principle so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston's gluing equation and Haken's normal surface equation. The action functional is the volume. This is a generalization of an earlier program by Casson and Rivin for compact 3-manifolds with torus boundary.
Poor Ideal Three-Edge Triangulations Are Minimal

Abstract:An ideal triangulation of a compact -manifold with nonempty boundary is known to be minimal if and only if the triangulation contains the minimum number of edges among all ideal triangulations of the manifold. Therefore, every ideal one-edge triangulation (i.e., an ideal singular triangulation with exactly one edge) is minimal. Vesnin, Turaev, and Fominykh showed that an ideal two-edge triangulation is minimal if no – Pachner move can be applied. In this paper we show that each of the so-called poor ideal three-edge triangulations is minimal. We exploit this property to construct minimal ideal triangulations for an infinite family of hyperbolic -manifolds with totally geodesic boundary.

Abstract:We execute Avdek's algorithm to find many algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifolds by contact $+1$ surgeries. In particular, we show that a contact $1/k$ surgery on the standard contact $3$-sphere along any positive torus knot with the maximum Thurston-Bennequin invariant yields an algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifold, where $k$ is a positive integer.
