Abstract:X-pinch experiments have been carried out on a 100 kA, 100 ns linear transformer driver stage recently built up. The X-pinches exhibited a source size of about 10 μm, a pulse duration of 3 ns, 3–5 keV radiation energy of 3.9 mJ, and a burst time jitter of tens of nanosecond with the 2-wire 8 μm W X-pinch load. The generator output current and the X-pinch characteristics depended on the X-pinch wire materials in the tests. X-ray backlighting images from the insects showed the significant phase-contrast effect.

Abstract:Significant experimental advances have been made on HL-2A tokamak along with substantial improvement and development of hardware. The three dimensional spectral structures of the low frequency zonal flow, the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and quasi-mode-like low frequency fluctuations have been observed simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the spectral structure of the density fluctuation at GAM frequency is also identified. A spontaneous particle transport barrier has been observed in Ohmic discharges without any external momentum input. The barrier is evidenced by particle perturbation study using modulated SMBI and microwave reflectometry. The non-local transport effect with new features induced by SMBI has been investigated. The e-fishbone instability excited by energetic electrons of non-Maxwellian distribution has been investigated via 10-channel CdTe hard x-ray detector. It is found that the e-fishbone is correlated with the existence of energetic electrons of 30-70 keV. The experiment shows that the suppression of m/n = 2/1 tearing modes can be sustained by ECRH with low modulation frequency of about 10 Hz. Continuous confinement improvement is obtained after the mode suppression.
Progress of High Heat Flux Component Manufacture and Heat Load Experiments in China

Abstract:High heat flux component manufacture is the critical technology for the current fusion experimental devices and fusion reactors in the future since it will face fusion plasma directly and endure high flux particle irradiation and huge heat deposition from core plasma. Be/CuCuZr/ss, W/CuCrZr and CFC/CuCrZr modules have been selected as the high heat flux components for ITER first wall and divertor chambers, respectively. Different pure tungsten and tungsten alloys are being developed in China for ITER use and the requirements of the domestic fusion devices, meanwhile the joining technology of tungsten with heat sink CuCrZr is being developed, in particular flat structure W/CuCrZr brazed mockups by silver free CuMn solder and monoblock structure W/CuCrZr mockups by pure copper casting and hot iso-static press technique. In order to evaluate the heat load performances of high heat flux materials and components, a 60 kW electron-beam material testing scenario (EMS-60) has been constructed and a 400 kW engineering mockup testing scenario (EMS-400) is being created. Preliminary heat load tests indicated grain refinement PM-W with high purity and W-K alloy have good crack resistance to transient thermal shocks, while brazed W/CuCrZr and monoblock W/CuCrZr mockups can withstand 1000 cycles under 6-8 MW/m 2 stable heat flux.

Abstract:Transient heat loads, such as plasma disruptions and ELMs, could induce plastic deformations, cracking, melting, even fatigue cracks and creep of tungsten (W) surface. A high purity W, CVD-W coating, TiC dispersion strengthened and K doped tungsten alloys were tested in a 60kW electron-beam facility by simulating the transient load events under different base temperatures. It was found that CVD-W, W-TiC and W-K alloys have higher crack thresholds than high purity W, meanwhile CVD-W is more sensitive to the crack disappearing at elevated base temperatures. On the other hand, repetitive pulse loading like ELMs can induce serious network cracks even the power density was quite lower than the crack threshold determined by a single shot. The ABAQUS code was used to simulate the crack behaviors of ITER grade pure W by a single shot and a FE-SAFE code was adopted to estimate the fatigue life under ELMs-like loads. A good agreement with experiment results was found.

Abstract:The area of pulsed-power technology covers a broad range of voltages and pulse durations. State of the art systems have voltages up to a few hundred kilovolts at pulse lengths down to the nanosecond range. Special applications require extreme field strengths in the range of 1 GV/m. The design of a compact source meeting the above requirement aims for 1 MV, 1 ns pulses. In this paper, we propose a concept for a novel compact transmission line transformer. To verify theoretical analyses and understanding, a model of the transmission line transformer has been simulated by time domain electromagnetic field solver. An optimized transmission line transformer has been built and first measurements have been performed. The equivalent simulation model agrees with the experimental results. The effect of secondary mode suppression by means of ferrite has been studied. Both simulations and experiments showed that ferromagnetic cores around each individual transmissions line in our design can be omitted

Matter and Radiation at Extremes

Abstract:In this paper, the results of tests on a 0.76-TW linear transformer driver (LTD) module for Z-pinch research are presented for the first time. Ten LTD cavities, each generating a 1-MA/90-kV pulse on a matched load, were connected in series with a magnetically insulated voltage adder to drive the e-beam diode. Three inner stalks with different radii were tested, and the results indicate that the output parameters of the ten cavities are sensitive to the cathode radii. As an intermediate step, a high-current pulse with 832 kV/912 kA/130 ns was obtained on the e-beam diode. To date, this is the maximum power generated directly by a fast LTD with mega-ampere current output.

Abstract:The results of an experimental investigation of X-pinch performance on the 1-MA "QiangGuang-1" facility are presented. "QiangGuang-1" is a linear-transformer-driver-based low-impedance pulsed power machine which provides a peak current of 0.9-1.3 MA and a 10%-90% rise time of 50-60 ns. X-pinch loads with 2-32 wires of different wire materials (Al, W, and Mo) with wire diameters from 25 to 100 mu m have been tested. The number and size of bright spots, timing of the first X-ray burst, X-pinch dynamics, and X-ray spectroscopy have been studied using a set of diagnostics with spatial and/or temporal resolution. A single bright spot obtained from a 30 x 25 mu m W X-pinch produced 42 J (35 GW) in the 1-10-keV energy range. The smallest bright spot size (radiating > 1.2 keV) observed was about 70 mu m. Linear relations between the timing of the first X-ray burst and the wire parameters (diameter and number) in W X-pinches were observed. A spatially large extreme ultraviolet plasma radiation region at the crossing point was typically observed. Al X-pinch plasma parameters were estimated from X-ray spectroscopy.

Abstract:The Primary Test Stand (PTS) developed at the China Academy of Engineering Physics is a 20 TW pulsed power driver, which can deliver a similar to 10 MA, 70 ns rise-time (10%-90%) current to a short-circuit load and has important applications in Z-pinch driven inertial confinement fusion and high energy density physics. Preliminary results of tungsten wire-array Z-pinch experiments on PTS are presented. The load geometries investigated include 15-mm-tall cylindrical single and nested arrays with diameter ranging from 13mm to 30 mm, consisting of 132-300 tungsten wires with 5-10 mu m in diameter. Multiple diagnostics were fielded to characterize the x-ray radiation from wire-array Z pinches. The x-ray peak power (similar to 50 TW) and total radiated energy (similar to 500 kJ) were obtained from a single 20-mm-diam array with 80-ns stagnation time. The highest x-ray peak power up to 80 TW with 2.4 ns FWHM was achieved by using a nested array with 20-mm outer diameter, and the total x-ray energy from the nested array is comparable to that of single array. Implosion velocity estimated from the time-resolved image measurement exceeds 30 cm/mu s. The detailed experimental results and other findings are presented and discussed. Abstract:The strong X-ray radiations produced by mega-ampere-current-level fast Z-pinch plasmas offer valuable and indispensible opportunities to create hot and dense radiation-heated plasmas 1 , serving the laboratory investigations of radiation sciences in the fields of opacity measurements, photon-ionized plasmas and so on. Recently, experiments of x-ray heating aluminum foil has been designed and is being carried out at the Primary Test Stand (PTS) facility 2 , a 8–10 MA, 70 ns pulsed power driver being able to generate x-ray bursts of 80 TW peak power and 3–5 ns FWHM 3 . In this paper, we present the simulation results of the aluminum foils heated by x-rays using a 1D radiation hydrodynamic code, the design of the sample foils with CH coatings on each side and the diagnostic results of x-ray power and energy in different spectral regions, transmission spectra through the foils and so on. By analyzing the measurements, the states and properties of the radiation-heated aluminum plasmas are estimated and discussed.
A new compact, portable 2-LTD-brick x-pinch driver at the Idaho Accelerator Center: design, fabrication, testing and x-ray performance

Abstract:We propose to construct a compact and portable x-pinch driver with x-ray radiation performance, comparable to standard x-pinch drivers. Such a new x-pinch driver was recently designed, fabricated and tested at the Idaho Accelerator Center. The generator is based on two slow LTD bricks combined into one solid unit, and can be described by a simple RLC circuit with four fast 140-nF, 100-kV capacitors that store up to 2.8 kJ. The test data reveals that when charged to 80 kV, the driver supplies 185-kA peak-current into a short Ni-wire load with 220-ns, 10-90%, rise time. The total internal inductance of our driver was measured to be about 60 nH. The revised driver model shows that when fully charged to 100 kV, the driver will supply 180-kA peak-current with 150-ns rise-time into the x-pinch load. The corresponding current rise rate is about 1.2 kA/ns. To prove the driver x-pinch efficiency and to estimate the x-ray radiation performance, we could, for example, image an exploding wires, placed in a separate HV pulser, with our x-pinch x-ray radiation source. The study of exploding wires helps to understand the behavior of a warm dense matter, and our x-pinch driver can be part of the diagnostics needed for this study which is currently under progress at the IAC. Our driver contains no oil inside, is very compact and portable, and can be easily relocated to practically anywhere, which makes it an ideal backlighting diagnostic tool in many areas of plasma physics, biology, and industry where a bright, fast, and small x-pinch radiation source is required.

Abstract:Summary form only given. X-pinch plasma is a good soft X-ray source. It emits intense soft X-rays from a small localized point, which makes it of many potential applications. For the purpose of using X-pinch plasma as X-ray backlighting source, a X-pinch device was designed, installed and tested. A pulsed accelerator was constructed for driving X- pinch plasma. The accelerator consists of a MARX generator, a 1.25 Ohm pulse forming line (PFL), a N/V switch and a 1.25 Ohm pulse transmission line (PTL). The MARX generator is composed of 16 capacitors of 0.65 muF that are charged to 75 kV in parallel. The MARX charges the PFL to about 1.2 MV when it is erected. A pulse voltage of 500 kV in amplitude and 100 ns in FWHM is delivered to PTL when the N/V switch self breaks down. The X-pinch load was composed of two Al wires 10 to 100 mum in diameter that are placed so as to cross and touch, in a shape of X, at the center of a 30-mm gap between two output plate electrodes of the accelerator. The load current was measured to be about 400 kA by a Rogowski coil inserted in one output plate electrode. The experiments on the X-pinch are being conducted. Several diagnostics including X-ray pinhole camera, PCDs and a three-frame Mach-Zehnder interferometer were employed for understanding the characteristics and dynamics of X-pinch plasmas

Abstract:This paper describes a new, high-current, X-pinch radiation source recently developed and tested at Idaho State University. Our design is based on two linear transformer driver (LTD) bricks arranged in side-by-side geometry and directly coupled with an X-pinch load. The salient features of our 2-LTD-bricks are its simplicity, compactness, and portability: there is no oil, no water, and no SF<sub>6</sub>. It can be easily relocated to any place where a compact X-pinch radiation source is wanted. The driver can store up to 2.8 kJ of initial energy and can deliver more than 200-kA peak-current with less than 200-ns, 10%-90%, rise time into a short-circuit load. When the driver is coupled with an X-pinch load, it generates a very fast and bright radiation pulse. Source size measurements indicate that this radiation originates from a very small dense plasma, known as a "hot spot."

Abstract:We present a staged hot-electron acceleration mechanism of the two-plasmon decay (TPD) instability in the transverse magnetic field under the parameters relevant to inertial confinement fusion experiments. After being accelerated by the forward electron plasma wave (FEPW) of TPD, the hot-electrons can be anomalously accelerated again by the backward electron plasma wave (BEPW) of TPD and then obtain higher energy. Moreover, the surfatron acceleration mechanism of TPD in the magnetic field is also confirmed, the electrons trapped by the TPD daughter EPWs are accelerated in the direction along the wave front. Interestingly, the velocity of electrons accelerated by surfing from the FEPW is quite easily close to the BEPW phase velocity, which markedly enhances the efficiency of the staged acceleration. The coexistence of these two acceleration mechanisms leads to a significant increase of energetic electrons generated by TPD in the magnetic field. Meanwhile the EPWs are dissipated, TPD instability is effectively suppressed, and the laser transmission increases.
A portable X-pinch design for x-ray diagnostics of warm dense matter

Abstract:We describe the design and x-ray emission properties (temporal, spatial, and spectral) of Dry Pinch I, a portable X-pinch driver developed at Imperial College London. Dry Pinch I is a direct capacitor discharge device, 300x300x700 mm3 in size and approximately 50 kg in mass, that can be used as an external driver for x-ray diagnostics in high-energy-density physics experiments. Among key findings, the device is shown to reliably produce 1.1 +- 0.3 ns long x-ray bursts that couple approximately 50 mJ of energy into photon energies from 1 to 10 keV. The average shot-to-shot jitter of these bursts is found to be 10 +- 4.6 ns using a combination of x-ray and current diagnostics. The spatial extent of the x-ray hot spot from which the radiation emanates agrees with previously published results for X-pinches suggesting a spot size of 10 +- 6 um in the soft energy region (1-10 keV) and 190 +- 100 um in the hard energy region (>10 keV). These characteristics mean that Dry Pinch I is ideally suited for use as a probe in experiments driven in the laboratory or at external facilities when more conventional sources of probing radiation are not available. At the same time, this is also the first detailed investigation of an X-pinch operating reliably at current rise rates of less than 1 kA/ns.

Abstract:X-pinch radiography experiments were carried out on the 1 MA QiangGuang-1 facility to investigate the wire core behaviors of the tungsten and aluminum planar wire array. An axial quencher and over-massed loads were used to suppress keV radiation from the planar wire array. Two-wire 30 μm Mo and/or 25 μm W X-pinches were used as backlighters. The x-ray point-projection images showed quite uneven characteristics of the dense wire cores and the current distribution in the linear array. For the W single planar wire array (SPWA), Wire core diameter profiles are likely to reveal that the initial current distributed inductively among the wires with the same diameter in the array, and both inductively and resistively among the wires with different diameters. For the Al SPWA, wires in different positions were in quite different ablation processes. No correlations of stratifications or plasma jets between adjacent wires were observed.
X-ray Backlighting of Wire Expansion and Plasma Merging of Z-Pinch Load with 10-40Ka/wire

Abstract:It is well known that the evolution of wire array z-pinch load can be divided into several phases: wire explosion, inter-wire plasma merging, implosion and stagnation. In this paper, experiments with x-pinch backlighter to study the initial wire explosion and inter-wire plasma merging were performed on the pulsed power generator PPG-I at Tsinghua University. An x-pinch (13-25μm Mo and 5-18μm Wu wires) used as soft x-ray source was installed in the centre between the output main electrodes of PPG-I generator, and the object z-pinch load was installed in one of the return current posts. The object z-pinch load consists of 2-4 tungsten wires of 5-18 μm diameter, 12 mm long, and 2 mm spacing between wires. The evolution images of wire explosion and inter-wire plasma merging were recorded with high resolution x-ray film, which was covered with a mass step-wedge filter to calibrate the mass density distribution of wire explosion and inter-wire merging plasma. Based on extensive discharge tests, the time sequence of backlighting images of z-pinches was obtained. In the paper, we also discussed how to determine the interface between high-density wire core and low-density surrounding plasma, and then presented the expansion rates of high density wire core and the mass density distribution of inter-wire plasma under different z-pinch current.
Sub-cycle Nanotip Field Emission of Electrons Driven by Air Plasma Generated THz Pulses

Abstract:Terahertz pulses generated by two-color laser plasmas have reported peak field strengths exceeding MV/cm, and when illuminating metal nanotips the near-field enhancement at the tip apex should result in extremely high bunch charges and electron energies via sub-cycle cold field emission. Here, electron emission from tungsten nanotips driven by THz pulses generated by a long filament air-plasma are reported. Electron energies up to 1.1 keV and bunch charges up to 2x$10^5$ electrons per pulse were detected, well below values expected for peak field calculated via the time averaged Poynting vector. Investigations revealed a failure in the use of the time-averaged Poynting vector when applied to long filament THz pulses, due to spatio-temporal restructuring of the THz pulse in the focus. Accounting for this restructuring significantly reduces the field strength to approximately 160 ~kV/cm, consistent with the observed electron bunch charges, peak energies and their dependence on the tip position in the THz focus. Despite these findings, our results surpass previous THz plasma-driven electron generation by an order of magnitude in both electron energy and bunch charge and a path to increasing these by an additional order of magnitude by modification of the THz optics is proposed.

Abstract:0.1 TW pulsed power generator (PPG-I) constructed for the research on X-pinch and Z-pinch was tested. The generator is composed of a 1.2 MV Marx generator with sixteen 0.65-μF capacitors charged to 75 kV in parallel and then erected in series, a 1.25 Ω pulse forming line (PFL) using distilled water as insulation, a V/N spark switch filled with pressurized SF6 gas, a 1.25 Ω pulse transmission line (PTL) using also distilled water as insulation and a 1.25-Ohm pseudo-load made of CuSO4 solution. It is found that the output voltage of PPG-I is influenced by the pressure of SF6 filled in the auxiliary gap of the V/N switch when the SF6 pressure of main gap keeps at 4.6 atm. If SF6 pressure in the auxiliary gap is 2.7 atm, the auxiliary gap will first self-break down at the time when the PFL is charged to a voltage of 1.1 MV, near its maximum charging voltage, causing multi-channel discharge in the main gap. In this case, the output voltage with a 1.25 ohm matching load is a square-wave with 470 kV in amplitude, 30 ns in risetime and 110 ns in FWHM. If SF6 pressure in the auxiliary gap rises to 3.4 atm, the auxiliary gap will not break down and the main gap breaks down with only one discharge channel when the PFL is charged to 1.1 MV. In this case, the output voltage of 440 kV in amplitude rises much more slowly with a risetime of 70 ns and without a flat top. It is concluded that the output voltage pulse from PPG-1 is suitable for driving X-pinch and Z-pinch load when the V/N switch works in multi-channel discharge mode.

Abstract:Suppressing of the core-corona structures shows a strong potential as a new breakthrough in the X-ray power production of the wire array Z-pinches. In this letter, the demonstration of suppressing the core-corona structures and its ablation using a novel double pulse current generator "Qin-1" facility is presented. The "Qin-1" facility coupled a ~10 kA 20 ns prepulse generator to a ~ 1 MA 170 ns main current generator. Driven by the prepulse current, the two aluminum wire array were mostly heated to gaseous state rather than the core-corona structures, and the implosion of the aluminum vapors driven by the main current showed no ablation, and no trailing mass. The seeds for the MRT instability formed from the inhomogeneous ablation were suppressed, however, the magneto Rayleigh-Taylor instability during the implosion was still significant and further researches on the generation and development of the magneto Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities of this gasified wire array are needed.

Abstract:A similar to 500 kV/400 kA/100 ns pulsed power generator (PPG-I) for x-pinch experiments was designed and constructed at Tsinghua University. It is composed of a Marx generator, a combined pulse forming line (PFL), a gas-filled V/N field distortion switch, a transfer line, and a copper-sulphate resistive load for testing. The PPG-I implements a novel design in lines that four pieces of waterline with impedance 5 Omega in parallel constitute a combined PFL with 1.25 Omega, and incorporate each other by a common self-break V/N switch on a matched 1.25 Omega transfer line. At the peak charging voltage of the PFL, the V/N switch breaks down in multi-channel discharge mode, and electric energy is fed into the testing load through the 1.25 Omega transfer line. This article presents the design and test of the PPG-I generator.
