Abstract:This article focuses on in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization to explore twins in face-centered-cubic and body-centered-cubic monolithic metals, and their impact on the overall mechanical performance. Taking advantage of simultaneous nanomechanical deformation and nanoscale imaging using versatile in situ TEM tools, direct correlation of these unique microscopic defects with macroscopic mechanical performance becomes possible. This article summarizes recent evidence to support the mechanisms related to strengthening and plasticity in metals, including nanotwinned Cu, Ni, Al, Au, and others in bulk, thin film, and nanowire forms.

Abstract:In this dissertation, the relationships between structure-mechanical properties-deformation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metallic nanowires have been studied using in situ TEM nanomechanical testing. It is well known that smaller is stronger and the widely-observed size effect is believed to arise from dislocation interactions inside nanocrystals. However, the interaction mechanisms in small-volume nanocrystals remain unexplored. Here, it was found that surface-nucleated dislocations can strongly interact inside the confined volume of Au nanowires, which led to a new type of dislocation-originated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT), at variance to the widely-believed vacancy-originated SFT. The atomic-scale processes of nucleation, migration and annihilation of dislocation-originated SFT were revealed, shedding new light onto the strain hardening and size effect in small-volume materials. Although nanoscale twinning is an effective mean to enhance the strength of metals, twin-size effect on the deformation and failure of nanotwinned metals remains largely unexplored, especially at the minimum twin size. Here, a new type of size effect in nanotwinned Au nanowires is presented. As twin size reaches the angstrom-scale, Au nanowires exhibit a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition that is governed by the heterogeneous-to-homogeneous dislocation nucleation transition. Quantitative measurements show that approaching such a nanotwin size limit gives rise to the ultra-high strength in Au nanowires, close to the ideal strength limit of perfect Au. Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystals. At the nanoscale, higher stresses are required for plastic deformation than that in bulk, which favors twinning over dislocation slip. Indeed, deformation twinning has been well-documented in FCC nanocrystals. However, it remains unexplored in BCC nanostructures. Here, it shows that twinning is the dominant deformation mode in BCC-tungsten nanocrystals. A competition between twinning and dislocation slip occurs when changing the loading orientations, attributed to the defect growth controlled plasticity in BCC nanocrystals. Several important commonalities and differences in FCC and BCC nanocrystals deforming at nanoscale are further proposed. The results from this dissertation advance fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in a broad class of metals and alloys, and are of technological importance for degradation control and future design of ultra-strength nanomaterials.
Transmission electron microscopy observation of a deformation twin in TWIP steel by an ex situ tensile test

Abstract:The formation of deformation twins in twinning-induced plasticity steels was observed in transmission electron microscope by an ex situ tensile test. The twinning process initially includes formation of extended dislocations at primary slip plane, then cross-slip to a conjugate slip plane with dissociation of the leading partial into a stair-rod dislocation and an emitted partial, and finally un-faulting of the original faults and formation of Frank partials. Repetition of the operation of the process on successive conjugate planes results in the formation of deformation twins. The formation mechanism of deformation twins can thus be explained by improving the stair-rod cross-slip model.

Abstract:Dislocation-twin interactions critically control the plastic deformation and ultrahigh strength of nanotwinned metals. Here, we report a strong twin-thickness dependence of dislocation-twin interaction mechanisms from the tensile deformation of face-centered cubic metallic nanocrystals by in situ nanomechanical testing. Direct observations at atomic scale reveal that the predominant dislocation-twin interaction abruptly changes from dislocation transmission on the {111} slip planes to the unusual (100) slip plane of the twin, when the twin thickness is smaller than 4 layers. Using atomistic simulations, we find that the energy barrier for {100} slip transmission mechanism gradually decreases, with decreasing twin thickness, below the energy level required for normal (111) slip transmission, which remains identical for all twin sizes. Our in situ observations and simulations provide atomistic insights into a fundamentally new mechanism of plasticity in nanotwinned metals, down to the lowest twin size limit.

Abstract:Twin–twin intersections are often observed in face-centered cubic (FCC) metallic nanostructures, which have important contributions to the plastic deformation and strengthening of FCC metals with low stacking fault energies. However, a deep insight into the underlying mechanism involved in the formation and evolution of twin–twin intersections remains largely lacking, especially in experiments. Here, by conducting the in situ straining experiments under high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), we directly visualize the dynamic evolution of a twin–twin intersection in Au nanowire at the nanoscale. It shows that dislocations in the incoming twin can either glide onto or transmit across the barrier twin via dislocation interaction with the twin boundary, resulting in the twin–twin intersection. Dynamic twinning and de-twinning of the twin–twin intersection govern the whole deformation of the nanowire. These findings reveal the dynamic behaviors of twin–twin intersection under mechanical loading, which benefits further exploration of FCC metals and engineering alloys with twin–twin intersection structures.

Abstract:Tensile twinning is a main deformation mode in hexagonal close packed structure metals, so it is important to comprehensively understand twinning mechanisms which are not fully disclosed using 2D or small volume 3D characterization techniques. A large area 3D electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement and crystal plasticity modeling were carried out to investigate the tensile twinning behaviors in a Mg alloy. The results showed that tensile twinning activity was underestimated using conventional 2D EBSD scans. When compressed to yield point, the examined twin frequency with 2D was lower than that using 3D EBSD. The effects of Schmid factor (SF) on twinning were investigated. Almost all high Schmid factor (SF>0.35) grains were twinned. A surprising high twin frequency of 82% in middle SF (0.35>=SF>=0.15) grains was observed, which was unexpected since the middle SF grains were believed to be unfavorable for twinning. The twin frequency in low SF (SF<0.15) grains was slightly increased from 2D to 3D EBSD due to the small volume of twins. The shear stress maintained a high level and was homogeneously distributed in high SF grains, facilitating twin nucleation and growth. The shear stress was distributed heterogeneously within the middle SF grains, and twins were nucleated within areas with positive shear stress. The shear stress in low SF grains was not favorable for twinning and twins occurred in the vicinity of stress accumulation. Twinning activities in the same grain varied on different layers. It was attributed to the stress fluctuation derived from grain environment changes.

Abstract:In situ straining was used to study deformation behavior of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals. Twinning and dislocation motion, both essential to plasticity in hcp materials, were observed. Typically, these processes are characterized postmortem by examining remnant microstructural features after straining has occurred. By imposing deformation during imaging, direct observation of active deformation mechanisms is possible. This work focuses on straining of structural metals in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a recently developed technique that utilizes familiar procedures and equipment to increase ease of experiments. In situ straining in a TEM presents several advantages over conventional postmortem characterization, most notably time resolution of deformation and streamlined identification of active deformation mechanisms. Drawbacks to the technique and applicability to other studies are also addressed. In situ straining is used to study twin boundary motion in hcp magnesium. A 101¯2$$ \left\{ {10\bar{1}2} \right\} $$ twin was observed during tensile and compressive loading. Twin-dislocation interactions are directly observed. Notably, dislocations are observed to remain mobile, even after multiple interactions with twin boundaries; this result suggests that Basinki’s dislocation transformation mechanism by twinning is not present in hcp metals. The coupling of in situ straining with traditional postmortem characterization yields more detailed information about material behavior during deformation than either technique alone.

Abstract:The process of tensile deformation of the two-phase lamellar γ(L10)α2(DO19) microstructure in a TiAl based alloy was investigated by in-situ transmission electron microscopy. The strain contrast in “soft” α2 lamella and twinning in “hard” γ lamella are observed when the lamellar structure is loaded. It is suggested that the relaxation of the twinning strain by α2 plays an important role in ductility improvement of the lamellar structure and the twinning is an important deformation mechanism in the two-phase TiAl alloys.

Abstract:We have revealed the fundamental embryonic structure of deformation twins using in situ mechanical testing of magnesium single crystals in a transmission electron microscope. This structure consists of an array of twin-related laths on the scale of several nanometers. A computational model demonstrates that this structure should be a generic feature at the incipient stage of deformation twinning when there are correlated nucleation events. Our results shed light on the origin of twinning-induced plasticity and transformation toughening, critical to the development of advanced structural alloys with high strength, ductility, and toughness.

Abstract:Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystalline solids. In metallic nanostructures, plastic deformation requires higher stresses than those needed in their bulk counterparts, resulting in the 'smaller is stronger' phenomenon. Such high stresses are thought to favour twinning over dislocation slip. Deformation twinning has been well documented in face-centred cubic (FCC) nanoscale crystals. However, it remains unexplored in body-centred cubic (BCC) nanoscale crystals. Here, by using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulations, we show that twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism in nanoscale crystals of BCC tungsten. Such deformation twinning is pseudoelastic, manifested through reversible detwinning during unloading. We find that the competition between twinning and dislocation slip can be mediated by loading orientation, which is attributed to the competing nucleation mechanism of defects in nanoscale BCC crystals. Our work provides direct observations of deformation twinning as well as new insights into the deformation mechanism in BCC nanostructures.
Effect of Pre-Existing Twinning on Strain Localization During Deformation of a Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:A fine dispersion of nanoscale gold surface markers was achieved on the surface of a Mg-alloy sample using a styrene-assisted remodeling process. The markers were used for a high resolution digital image correlation strain-field analysis, to achieve a better understanding of the effect of pre-existing twinning on strain localization during in-situ tensile deformation. A complex pattern of heterogeneous strain localization was found. The results show that twins do not deform uniformly, and that relative differences in Schmid factor may influence the early occurrence of strain localization. Additionally, strain localization was seen to occur preferentially at grain boundaries and twin boundaries due to the lack of efficient plastic mechanisms for strain transfer across such interfaces. The results demonstrate the ability to measure strain localization on a fine scale in Mg-alloys, and highlight the complex interaction between deformation mechanisms during plastic deformation. In-situ Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction Nano-tensile Testing

Abstract:We present a novel methodology for in-situ Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) nano-tensile testing that enables nanoscale characterization of the evolution of complex plasticity mechanisms. By integrating a modified in-situ Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) nanoindenter with a microscale push-to-pull device and a conventional Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) detector, we achieved TKD measurements at high spatial resolution during mechanical deformation. A dedicated Focused Ion Beam (FIB) procedure was developed for site-specific specimen fabrication, including lift-out, thinning, and shaping into a dog-bone geometry. The methodology was demonstrated on two case studies: (i) a metastable $\beta$-Ti single crystal, on which we quantified the initiation and evolution of nanoscale twinning and stress-induced martensitic transformation, and (ii) a $CuAl/Al_2O_3$ nanolaminate, which showed nanoscale plasticity and twinning/detwinning in a complex microstructure. Overall, this approach provides a robust alternative to in-situ EBSD and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) testing, facilitating detailed analysis of deformation mechanisms at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Static recrystallization of a high strain rate compressed Mg-1 Zn (wt.%) alloy was investigated using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). A novel 53°<math>〈101¯0〉</math> structure was observed in the as-deformed alloy, which showed a <math>{101¯2}</math>-<math>{101¯2}</math> double twin relationship with the matrix. When the as-deformed alloy was annealed at 200 °C, the <math>{101¯1}</math> compression twins and <math>{101¯1}</math>-<math>{101¯2}</math> double twins showed a higher priority to recrystallize. In addition, the coarse <math>{101¯2}</math> tension twins and their inner double twins were preferentially to recrystallize, while the lenticular tension twins had little impact on the recrystallization. Therefore, obtaining more compression twins or coarse twins instead of lenticular tension twins can be an effective approach to manipulate recrystallization process in deformed Mg alloys.

Abstract:The characteristics of initiation of RNA synthesis and the elongation of RNA chains on rat ventral-prostate chromatin by RNA polymerase B were investigated by two methods. 1. Initiation was carried out under low-salt conditions with three ribonucleoside triphosphates, and elongation was begun in the absence of reinitiation by the addition of the fourth ribonucleoside triphosphate and increasing the salt concentration. 2. Stable initiation complexes were formed by preincubation of enzyme with template at 37 degrees C, elongation was started by the addition of all four ribonucleoside triphosphates and reinitiation or spurious RNA synthesis was prevented by rifamycin AF/013. The latter method gave more reliable results. The dependence of those parameters on the androgenic status of the animal was studied. During the first 24h after castration, elongation was mainly affected, whereas after 72h a smaller number of initiation sites for RNA polymerase B on chromatin was evident. Considerable diurnal variations in the various parameters were observed. Changes in the relative concentrations of the chromatin-associated proteins were also observed after castration. In the rat ventral-prostate gland androgenic steroids may not only influence one stage of the transcriptional process, but may affect many factors involved in the control of gene expression.
The evolution of local stress during deformation twinning in a Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloy

Abstract:In this study, we perform in-situ tensile testing and high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) to monitor the twin local stresses at different stages: (i) before twinning, (ii) twins that have propagated into the parent crystal, and (iii) thickening of the twin lamella. The resolved shear stress (RSS) at the twin interface is calculated during deformation twinning, which indicates that the RSS evolution is a dynamic process. Negative shear stress is observed during the propagation stage, which provides evidence for the twinning shear transformation-induced stress reversal. Furthermore, a local Schmid factor (LSF) is used to evaluate the extent to which the local stress is dominated by the RSS on the identified twin plane. The experimental results indicate that the LSFs evolve with strain and are at their maximum level before twinning. The initiated twins are correlated with the highest LSFs compared with the unactivated variants. In addition, the product of the Luster Morris m′ value times the LSF of the twin variant may reveal a threshold for the slip-induced twinning process.

Abstract:Deformation twinning is one of the major plastic deformation modes of hexagonal metals. In this study, a new system of crystal plasticity finite element models is developed, with the cooperative interactions of dislocation slip and deformation twinning comprehensively involved. The obtained stress-strain curves for several differently-orientated Mg single crystals match well with experimental results, and the formation and thickening features of twin bands are captured. Simulation results reveal that (1) some thin twin bands are firstly formed in the shearing direction of the twinning plane, because of the much lower twinning resistance than that in the normal direction; (2) the softening and hardening of the twinning resistance play a critical role in the anisotropic mechanical response. By optimizing the twinning activation behaviors, the favorable interactions of twinning and dislocation slip can occur and the plastic deformation ability can be improved.

Abstract:Abundant {10–12} twins appeared in an extruded Mg-2.8Y (wt. %) sheet with rare-earth (RE) texture under compression along the transverse direction (TD). Twinning-detwinning behavior during compression-tension loading was quantitatively investigated via quasi-in-situ EBSD observation. The evolution of deformation mechanisms was quantitatively studied by calculation of the plastic strain fraction of twinning, detwinning, and dislocation slip. Twinning and detwinning were the dominant deformation modes in compression and reverse tension, respectively, owing to their relatively higher Schmid factors (SF) and lowest activation stresses (τ). Twin variants with SF ranking 1st and 2nd were activated preferentially while detwinning with low SF ranking showed high activation. The impact of texture and load path on variant selection was systematically discussed. Moreover, short twin chains only passing through two or three grains caused by twinning transfer were observed. Grain boundary misorientation angle (GBMA) and geometric compatibility factor (m') were introduced to analyze the crystallographic characteristics of twinning transfer. GBMA ≤34.5° or m' ≥ 0.80 is a necessary condition for most twinning transfer events. RE texture as well as the nearly uniform distribution of GBMA gave rise to short twin chains and restricted the formation of long twin bands. The relationship between GBMA and m' was also discussed.
