Abstract:A high-performance bioanode based on the composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-immobilized mediator and silk film (SF)-immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD) was developed for glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (BFC). Ferrocenecarboxaldehyde (Fc) was used as the mediator and covalently immobilized on the ethylenediamine (EDA)-functionalized CNTs (CNTs-EDA). GOD was cross-linked on the SF with glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linking agent. The resulting electrode (CNTs-Fc/SF-GOD/glassy carbon (GC) electrode) exhibited good catalytic activity towards glucose oxidation and excellent stability. For the assembled glucose/O-2 BFC with the CNTs-Fc/SF-GOD/GC electrode as the bioanode and a commercial E-TEK Pt/C modified GC electrode as the cathode, the open circuit potential is 0.48 V and the maximum power density of 50.70 mu W cm(-2) can be achieved at 0.15V. Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel carbon nanotubes-hydroxyapatite (CNTs–HA) nanocomposite-based compartment-less glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with the glucose oxidase (GOD) as the anodic biocatalysts and the laccase as the cathodic biocatalysts. CNTs–HA nanocomposite prepared by the self-assembly method via an aqueous solution reaction has been used as the co-immobilization matrix to incorporate biocatalysts, i.e. GOD and laccase successfully. Moreover, the three-dimensional configuration of the CNTs–HA films electrode would be advantageous to the glucose oxidation on the bioanode and O2 electroreduction on the biocathode of BFC. The maximum power density delivered by the assembled glucose/O2 BFC could reach 15.8μWcm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.28V with 10mM glucose. The results indicate that the CNTs–HA nanocomposite is believed to be very useful for the development of novel BFC device.
Construction and Performance of a New Bioanode for Biofuel Cells

Abstract:Acid-treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were functionalized by beta-cyclodextrin (CD) through the van der Waals force between them. It is well-known that CD is toroidal in shape with a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior. Based on the recognition of CD to ferrocene (Fe), a water-soluble complex, CNTs-beta-CD-Fc, was prepared. Glucose oxidase (GOD) was mixed with CNTs-beta-CD-Fc and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde to form enzyme polymer. Then the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc composite was coated on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode and the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode was obtained. The prepared CNTs-beta-CD and CNTs-beta-CD-Fc were characterized by thermal gravimeritric analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic properties of the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode towards glucose oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that under the same experimental conditions, the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD/GC electrode (without Fe) had almost no catalytic currents for glucose oxidation and the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode had higher electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation than the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC electrode. The long-term cycle stability of the developed GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode was also evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and the results showed that the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode had much better stability than the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC electrode. Taking the commercial E-TEK Pt/C modified GC electrode as the cathode, the maximum power density of the glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (EBFC) based on the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC anode was 33 mu W.cm(-2) (at 0.18 V), almost 3 times higher than that of the EBFC based on the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC anode (11.7 mu W.cm(-2) at 0.16 V). The stability of the developed EBFC was also investigated by monitoring the change of the open circuit potential (OCP) of EBFC. After continuous operation for 9 h, the developed EBFC (the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC electrode as the bioanode) remained 92% of initial OCP, suggesting the good operating stability. The proposed strategy for bioanode preparation may provide a new way for the development of glucose/O-2 EBFC with good perfomance and high stability.

Abstract:This study describes a multi-walled carbon nanotube-based glucose/O2 biofuel cell with glucose oxidase and laccase as the anodic and cathodic biocatalysts, respectively. Upon being functionalized with L-a-phosphatidylcholine, one kind of lipid, multi-walled carbon nanotubes can serve as a support for glucose oxidase to form a three-dimensional, conducting and uniform bioanode that possesses a good bioelectrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose biofuel with solution-phased ferrocene monocarboxylic acid as the mediator to shuttle the electron transfer between glucose oxidase and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In a similar way, the lipid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes can also be used to support the cathodic biocatalyst, i.e., laccase, and, more remarkably, to facilitate the direct electron transfer of laccase. As a result, the prepared biocathode is very active toward the reduction of oxygen without using any electron-transfer mediators. The biofuel cell has a 0.45 V open circuit potential and 34 microA/cm2 short circuit current density in phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) separated with Nafion-117 membrane with anodic compartment containing 15 mM glucose and 2 mM ferrocene monocarboxylic acid and with cathodic compartment being saturated with O2 at room temperature. A maximum power density of 3.2 microW/cm2 is obtained with ca. 0.2 V potential output.

Abstract:Multilayer film of laccase, poly-l-lysine (PLL) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The results of the UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy studies demonstrated a uniform growth of the multilayer. The catalytic behavior of the modified electrode was investigated. The (MWNTs/PLL/laccase)n multilayer modified electrode catalyzed four-electron reduction of O2 to water, without any mediator. The possible application of the laccase-catalyzed O2 reduction at the (MWNTs/PLL/laccase)n multilayer modified ITO electrode was illustrated by constructing a glucose/O2 biofuel cell with the (MWNTs/thionine/AuNPs)8 GDH film modified ITO electrode as a bioanode and the (MWNTs/PLL/laccase)15 film modified ITO electrode as a biocathode. The open-circuit voltage reached to 700mV, and the maximum power density achieved 329μWcm−2 at 470mV of the cell voltage.

Abstract:A layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique was employed to modify glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) and screen printed electrodes (SPEs) utilizing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polyelectrolyte binary composites and an enzyme cascade to facilitate efficient electron transfer in sucrose/O-2 biofuel cell. In this study, MWCNTs immobilized invertase (INV) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) were alternatively assembled upon polyethyleneimine (PEI) and DNA nanocomposites to construct a bioanode. [Ni(phendion)(phen)]Cl-2 complex and methylene green (MG) were investigated as redox mediators for electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH at reduced overpotentials. The LbL architecture showed advantages for sequential enzymatic reaction that favored the efficient penetration of substrate and products in a cascade system while MWCNTs facilitated the efficient electron transfer from sucrose oxidation and enhancement of the current density. With a GCE bioanode modified with aMG or Ni complex, the biofuel cell produced a higher power density (mu W/cm(2)) with 145.8% and 130.11% enhancement comparing to a SPE bioanode, respectively. Moreover, the Ni complex modified GCEs and SPEs produced power densities (mu W/cm(2)) 93.7% and 107.0% higher compared to MG modified bioanodes, respectively. The maximum current density of 1400 +/- 46 mu A/cm(2) was obtained with the Ni complex on GCE at an OCP of 604 +/- 17 mV with a maximum power density of 405 +/- 6 mu W/cm(2). The LbL assembly showed great feasibility as a simple and efficient way to construct controlled MWCNT-multi-enzyme modified electrodes for biofuel cell applications. (C) The Author(s) 2016. Abstract:A hybrid system of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer-encapsulated platinum nanoparticles (Pt-DENs) and glucose oxidase (GOx) was prepared through the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and then used as anode in enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs). The assembly process was monitored by ζ-potential measurement, and the as-resulted Pt-DENs/CNTs nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The performance of electrodes modified by Pt-DENs/CNTs was also investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). We found that the Pt-DENs/CNTs could enhance the electron transfer between the redox centers in enzyme and the electrode surfaces. Furthermore, by employing the Pt-DENs/CNTs modified electrodes as anode, the enzyme-based BFCs operated in a solution containing glucose generated an open-circuit voltage of approximately 640.0mV and a maximum current density of about 90.0μA/cm2, suggesting that Pt-DENs/CNTs may serve as an alternative anode to previously used noble metals in BFC applications.
Preparation of Enzyme Electrodes for Biofuel Cells Based on the Immobilization of Glucose Oxidase in Polyion Complex

Abstract:An emzymatic bioanode for a glucose/oxygen biofuel cell was prepared by the sequential coating of carbon nanotube (CNT), charge transfer complex (CTC) based on tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), glucose oxidase (GOx), and polyion complex (mixture of poly-L-lysine hydrobromide and poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) on a glassy carbon electrode. A biocathode was also prepared by the sequential coating of CNT, bilirubin oxidase (BOD), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), and polyion complex. The effect of CNT and CTC on the electrochemical performance was investigated. The biofuel cell exhibited a promising performance with maximum power densities of 3.6, 10.1, and at 5, 20, and 200 mM of glucose concentration, respectively. The result indicates that the biofuel cell architecture prepared in this study can be used in the development of biofuel cells and biosensors.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a miniature biofuel cell (BFC) with single-walled carbon nanohorn (SWNH)-modified carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) as the substrate for the first time. The bioanode was constructed by using glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) as the biocatalyst on SWNH-modified CFMEs, where a highly efficient and stably confined electrocatalyst for the oxidation of the NADH co-factor of GDH was beforehand immobilized. Similarly, an electrically contacted bilirubin oxidase (BOD)-SWNHs/CFME was prepared as the biocathode, which showed direct bioelectrocatalytic functions for the reduction of O-2 to H2O. The maximum power output of the cell was 140 mu W cm(-2) at 0.51 V. Most interestingly, the present glucose/air BFC can directly harvest energy from different kinds of soft drinks, which could promise potential applications of the BFC as portable power sources.
A High-Performance Glucose/oxygen Biofuel Cell Based on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Films with Electrophoretic Deposition

Abstract:Electrode supports play a significant role in the assembly of high-performance biofuel cells (BFCs) since they connect the active center of biocatalysts and the charge collectors directly. In this manuscript, novel nanostructured multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD-MWCNT films) as electrode supports for high-performance BFCs. Flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase and laccase were modified on EPD-MWCNT films to fabricate the bioanodes and biocathodes, respectively, with Os-complexes as mediators. For comparison, drop-casted MWCNT films or buckypapers have been prepared and adopted for the construction of BFCs with the same biocatalysts. EPD-MWCNT films which have vegetable sponge-like networks should be the optimal electrode supports for glucose/O-2 BFCs with higher power density. The EPD-MWCNT films based glucose/O-2 BFC showed a high maximum power density of 0.43 +/- 0.03 mW cm(-2) and open circuit voltage of 0.59 V, which is significantly superior to those values of the BFCs based on drop-cast MWCNT films or buckypapers, contributing to the electrode supports of EPD-MWCNT films with vegetable sponge-like nanostructure. Moreover, the BFC retained 56% of its original power density even after continuous operation for 7 days. Our findings would open an avenue for the development of more efficient BFCs with EPD-MWCNT films as the electrode supports.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs), a new type of carbon nanomaterials, possess excellent catalytic properties, high-purity, and low toxicities, which make them suitable for bioelectrochemical application. Here a biofuel cell anode has been developed by using SWNHs as the support for redox mediator and biocatalyst for the first time. Cyclic voltammetric results show SWNHs promotes the electropolymerization of methylene blue (MB) and the resulted nanocomposite (poly MB–SWNHs) exhibits prominent catalytic ability to the oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Glucose dehydrogenase was then immobilized on the poly MB–SWNHs modified electrode for the oxidation of glucose. Employing Pt nanoparticles supported on functionalized TiO2 colloidal spheres with nanoporous surface as cathode catalyst, the as-assembled glucose/O2 biofuel cell operate at the physiological condition with good performance.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a new kind of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT)-based compartment-less glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) and bilirubin oxidase (BOD) as the anodic and cathodic biocatalysts, respectively, and with poly(brilliant creysl blue) (BCB) adsorbed onto SWNT nanocomposite as the electrocatalyst for the oxidation of NADH. The prepared GDH-polyBCB-SWNT bioanode exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose biofuel; in 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 20mM NAD+ and 100mM glucose, the oxidation of glucose commences at −0.25V and the current reaches its maximum of 310μA/cm2 at −0.05V vs. Ag/AgCl. At the BOD-SWNT biocathode, a high potential output is achieved for the reduction of O2 due to the direct electron transfer property of BOD at the SWNTs. In 0.10M phosphate buffer, the electrocatalytic reduction of O2 is observed at a high potential of 0.53V vs. Ag/AgCl with an electrocatalytic current plateau of ca. 28μA/cm2 at 0.45V under ambient air and ca. 102μA/cm2 under O2-saturated atmosphere. In 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 10mM NAD+ and 40mM glucose under O2-saturated atmosphere, the power density of the assembled SWNT-based glucose/O2 BFC reaches 53.9μW/cm2 at 0.50V. The performance and the stability of the glucose/O2 BFC are also evaluated in serum. This study could offer a new route to the development of new kinds of enzymatic BFCs with a high performance and provide useful information on future studies on the enzymatic BFCs as in vivo power sources.

In this study, electrostatically interacted CNT-Invertase (INV), CNT-glucose dehydrogenase (GDH, NAD+-dependent) with cushioning bilayers CNT-polyethyleneimine (PEI) and CNT-DNA were alternatively assembled in LbL fashion on SPE (0.2 cm2) and GCE (0.07065 cm2). [Ni(phendion)(phen)]Cl2 complex and methylene green (MG) were investigated as redox mediator for electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH at reduced overpotentials. The LbL architecture showed advantages for sequential enzymatic reaction that favored the efficient penetration of substrate and products in a cascade system while MWCNT facilitated the direct electron transfer from sucrose oxidation and enhancement of the current density. With GCE as modified bioanode using MG and Ni complex, the biofuel cell produced a higher power density (μW/cm2) with 134.4% and 34.3% enhancement comparing with SPE bioanode, respectively. SWNTs are used as a support both for stably confining the electrocatalyst (i.e., methylene green, MG) for the oxidation of NADH and the anodic biocatalyst (i.e., NAD+-dependent glucose dehydrogenase, GDH) for the oxidation of glucose and for efficiently facilitating direct electrochemistry of the cathodic biocatalyst (i.e., laccase) for the O2 reduction. The prepared micro-sized GDH-based bioanode and laccase-based biocathode exhibit good bioelectrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose and the reduction of oxygen, respectively. In 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 10mM NAD+ and 45mM glucose under ambient air, the power density of the assembled miniature compartment-less glucose/O2 BFC reaches 58μWcm−2 at 0.40V. The stability of the miniature glucose/O2 BFC is also evaluated.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional (3D) carbon composite of PANI1600@CNTs with rhizobium-like structure is prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline monomers around and along the functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and then carbonized at 1600°C for enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs). The SEM and TEM images clearly show that the carbonized PANI grew seamlessly on the surface of CNTs and presented the rhizobium-like structure. The carbonized PANI acts like conductive “glue” and connects the adjacent tubes together, which can assemble the CNTs into a 3D network. The PANI1600@CNTs composite modified glassy carbon electrodes based on glucose oxidase (GOx) and laccase (Lac) exhibit high electrochemical performance. A glucose//O2 EBFC constitutes of the fabricated anode and cathode performs a maximum power density of 1.12mWcm−2 at 0.45V. Furthermore, three of the fabricated EBFCs in series are able to lightening up a yellow light-emitting diode (LED) whose turn-on voltage is about at 1.8V. This work may be helpful for exploiting novel substrates by carbonizing the composites of conducting polymer with nano materials at high-temperature for immobilization of enzymes in the EBFCs or biosensor fields.
Preparation of a ferrocene mediated bioanode for biofuel cells by MWCNTs, polyethylenimine and glutaraldehyde: glucose oxidase immobilization and characterization

Abstract:Abstract Ferrocene groups introduced polyethylenimine was adsorbed onto multi‐wall carbon nanotubes attached carbon cloth before crosslinking via glutaraldehyde to develop an enzyme electrode (anode) for biofuel cell applications. Glucose oxidase was covalently immobilized onto this electrode by leftover aldehyde groups on the surface. The apparent Michaelis constant of immobilized enzyme was measured as approximately fivefold higher than that of the free enzyme. Thermal stability of immobilized enzyme was improved as estimated. Activity half‐life of the immobilized glucose oxidase was determined as approximately 8 times longer than that of the free one; 2.4 mA/cm 2 electrical current was obtained by using this electrode by forming a basic biofuel half‐cell.
