Abstract:The power output and stability of enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs) is greatly dependent on the properties of both the biocathode and bioanode, which may be adapted for portable power production. In this paper, a novel highly uniform three-dimensional (3D) macroporous gold (MP-Au) film was prepared by heating the gold "supraspheres", which were synthesized by a bottom-up protein templating approach, and followed by modification of laccase on the MP-Au film by covalent immobilization. The as-prepared laccase/MP-Au biocathode exihibited an onset potential of 0.62 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE, or 0.86 V vs NHE, normal hydrogen electrode) toward O2 reduction and a high catalytic current of 0.61 mAcm(-2). On the other hand, mutated glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) surface displayed bacteria (GDH-bacteria) were used to improve the stability of the glucose oxidation at the bioanode. The as-assembled membraneless glucose/O2 fuel cell showed a high power output of 55.8 ± 2.0 μW cm(-2) and open circuit potential of 0.80 V, contributing to the improved electrocatalysis toward O2 reduction at the laccase/MP-Au biocathode. Moreover, the BFC retained 84% of its maximal power density even after continuous operation for 55 h because of the high stability of the bacterial surface displayed GDH mutant toward glucose oxidation. Our findings may be promising for the development of more efficient glucose BFC for portable battery or self-powered device applications.

Abstract:A high-performance bioanode based on the composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-immobilized mediator and silk film (SF)-immobilized glucose oxidase (GOD) was developed for glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (BFC). Ferrocenecarboxaldehyde (Fc) was used as the mediator and covalently immobilized on the ethylenediamine (EDA)-functionalized CNTs (CNTs-EDA). GOD was cross-linked on the SF with glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linking agent. The resulting electrode (CNTs-Fc/SF-GOD/glassy carbon (GC) electrode) exhibited good catalytic activity towards glucose oxidation and excellent stability. For the assembled glucose/O-2 BFC with the CNTs-Fc/SF-GOD/GC electrode as the bioanode and a commercial E-TEK Pt/C modified GC electrode as the cathode, the open circuit potential is 0.48 V and the maximum power density of 50.70 mu W cm(-2) can be achieved at 0.15V. Abstract:This review discusses different types of nano-gold hybrid materials used in electrodes for fuel cells and their application for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, with the majority operating in alkaline media. The various synthesis methods for these materials are also described. Successful applications of these emerging hybrid materials with respect to parameters such as size and crystallographic orientations of nano-gold materials in electrodes, nano-gold composites on different substrates and electrode materials, nano-gold as binary catalytic materials, as well as dealloyed nanoporous gold electrocatalysts are highlighted. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are also discussed in the context of bioengineering topics such as bio-sensors, bio-fuel cells, and doping of biological molecules like DNA with NPs. Furthermore, limitations of these applications in addition to future applications that could be explored in the field of nano-gold hybrid materials are mentioned. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Construction and Performance of a New Bioanode for Biofuel Cells

Abstract:Acid-treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were functionalized by beta-cyclodextrin (CD) through the van der Waals force between them. It is well-known that CD is toroidal in shape with a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior. Based on the recognition of CD to ferrocene (Fe), a water-soluble complex, CNTs-beta-CD-Fc, was prepared. Glucose oxidase (GOD) was mixed with CNTs-beta-CD-Fc and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde to form enzyme polymer. Then the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc composite was coated on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode and the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode was obtained. The prepared CNTs-beta-CD and CNTs-beta-CD-Fc were characterized by thermal gravimeritric analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic properties of the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode towards glucose oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that under the same experimental conditions, the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD/GC electrode (without Fe) had almost no catalytic currents for glucose oxidation and the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode had higher electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation than the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC electrode. The long-term cycle stability of the developed GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode was also evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and the results showed that the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC bioanode had much better stability than the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC electrode. Taking the commercial E-TEK Pt/C modified GC electrode as the cathode, the maximum power density of the glucose/O-2 biofuel cell (EBFC) based on the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC anode was 33 mu W.cm(-2) (at 0.18 V), almost 3 times higher than that of the EBFC based on the GOD/CNTs-Fc/GC anode (11.7 mu W.cm(-2) at 0.16 V). The stability of the developed EBFC was also investigated by monitoring the change of the open circuit potential (OCP) of EBFC. After continuous operation for 9 h, the developed EBFC (the GOD/CNTs-beta-CD-Fc/GC electrode as the bioanode) remained 92% of initial OCP, suggesting the good operating stability. The proposed strategy for bioanode preparation may provide a new way for the development of glucose/O-2 EBFC with good perfomance and high stability.

Abstract:In this work, Au NPs decorated porous hollow tubular carbon materials (PHTCs@Au) by direct carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) derived from ZnO nanorods were prepared and used as enzyme immobilizing matrix to construct a bioanode for glucose/O-2 biofuel cells (BFCs). Due to high surface area, good electric conductivity and extraordinary porous-hollow tubular structure of PHTCs@Au, the resulted enzyme electrode (PHTCs@Au/GOD (glucose oxidase)-GA (glutaraldehyde)/glassy carbon (GC) electrode) exhibited excellent catalytic capacity towards glucose oxidation and good stability. For the assembled glucose/O-2 BFC with the PHTCs@Au/GOD-GA/GC electrode as the bioanode and a commercial Pt plate electrode as the cathode, the maximum power density of 310 mu W cm(-2) can be obtained at 0:23 V, and the open circuit potential is 0.63 V. The attractive features of PHTCs also provide potential applications in energy storage and conversion devices such as supercapacitor and fuel cells, etc.

Moreover, the three-dimensional configuration of the CNTs–HA films electrode would be advantageous to the glucose oxidation on the bioanode and O2 electroreduction on the biocathode of BFC. The maximum power density delivered by the assembled glucose/O2 BFC could reach 15.8μWcm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.28V with 10mM glucose. Abstract:This study describes a multi-walled carbon nanotube-based glucose/O2 biofuel cell with glucose oxidase and laccase as the anodic and cathodic biocatalysts, respectively. Upon being functionalized with L-a-phosphatidylcholine, one kind of lipid, multi-walled carbon nanotubes can serve as a support for glucose oxidase to form a three-dimensional, conducting and uniform bioanode that possesses a good bioelectrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose biofuel with solution-phased ferrocene monocarboxylic acid as the mediator to shuttle the electron transfer between glucose oxidase and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In a similar way, the lipid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes can also be used to support the cathodic biocatalyst, i.e., laccase, and, more remarkably, to facilitate the direct electron transfer of laccase. As a result, the prepared biocathode is very active toward the reduction of oxygen without using any electron-transfer mediators. The biofuel cell has a 0.45 V open circuit potential and 34 microA/cm2 short circuit current density in phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) separated with Nafion-117 membrane with anodic compartment containing 15 mM glucose and 2 mM ferrocene monocarboxylic acid and with cathodic compartment being saturated with O2 at room temperature. A maximum power density of 3.2 microW/cm2 is obtained with ca. 0.2 V potential output.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a new kind of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT)-based compartment-less glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) and bilirubin oxidase (BOD) as the anodic and cathodic biocatalysts, respectively, and with poly(brilliant creysl blue) (BCB) adsorbed onto SWNT nanocomposite as the electrocatalyst for the oxidation of NADH. The prepared GDH-polyBCB-SWNT bioanode exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose biofuel; in 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 20mM NAD+ and 100mM glucose, the oxidation of glucose commences at −0.25V and the current reaches its maximum of 310μA/cm2 at −0.05V vs. Ag/AgCl. At the BOD-SWNT biocathode, a high potential output is achieved for the reduction of O2 due to the direct electron transfer property of BOD at the SWNTs. In 0.10M phosphate buffer, the electrocatalytic reduction of O2 is observed at a high potential of 0.53V vs. Ag/AgCl with an electrocatalytic current plateau of ca. 28μA/cm2 at 0.45V under ambient air and ca. 102μA/cm2 under O2-saturated atmosphere. In 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 10mM NAD+ and 40mM glucose under O2-saturated atmosphere, the power density of the assembled SWNT-based glucose/O2 BFC reaches 53.9μW/cm2 at 0.50V. The performance and the stability of the glucose/O2 BFC are also evaluated in serum. This study could offer a new route to the development of new kinds of enzymatic BFCs with a high performance and provide useful information on future studies on the enzymatic BFCs as in vivo power sources.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs), a new type of carbon nanomaterials, possess excellent catalytic properties, high-purity, and low toxicities, which make them suitable for bioelectrochemical application. Here a biofuel cell anode has been developed by using SWNHs as the support for redox mediator and biocatalyst for the first time. Cyclic voltammetric results show SWNHs promotes the electropolymerization of methylene blue (MB) and the resulted nanocomposite (poly MB–SWNHs) exhibits prominent catalytic ability to the oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Glucose dehydrogenase was then immobilized on the poly MB–SWNHs modified electrode for the oxidation of glucose. Employing Pt nanoparticles supported on functionalized TiO2 colloidal spheres with nanoporous surface as cathode catalyst, the as-assembled glucose/O2 biofuel cell operate at the physiological condition with good performance.

Preparation of Enzyme Electrodes for Biofuel Cells Based on the Immobilization of Glucose Oxidase in Polyion Complex

Abstract:An emzymatic bioanode for a glucose/oxygen biofuel cell was prepared by the sequential coating of carbon nanotube (CNT), charge transfer complex (CTC) based on tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), glucose oxidase (GOx), and polyion complex (mixture of poly-L-lysine hydrobromide and poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) on a glassy carbon electrode. A biocathode was also prepared by the sequential coating of CNT, bilirubin oxidase (BOD), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), and polyion complex. The effect of CNT and CTC on the electrochemical performance was investigated. The biofuel cell exhibited a promising performance with maximum power densities of 3.6, 10.1, and at 5, 20, and 200 mM of glucose concentration, respectively. The result indicates that the biofuel cell architecture prepared in this study can be used in the development of biofuel cells and biosensors.

Abstract:A new type of dehydrogenase-based amperometric glucose biosensor was constructed using glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) which was immobilized on the edge-plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG) electrode modified with poly(phenosafranin)-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (PPS-SWCNTs). The PPS-SWCNT-modified EPPG electrode was prepared by electropolymerization of phenosafranin on the EPPG electrode which had been previously coated with SWCNTs. The performance of the GDH/PPS-SWCNT/EPPG bioanode was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and amperometry in the presence of glucose. The GDH/PPS-SWCNT/EPPG electrode possesses promising characteristics as a glucose sensor: a wide linear dynamic range of 50 to 700 μM, low detection limit of 0.3 μM, fast response time (1-2 s), high sensitivity (96.5 μA cm(-2) mM(-1)), and anti-interference and anti-fouling abilities. Moreover, the performance of the GDH/PPS-SWCNT/EPPG bioanode was tested in a glucose/O(2) biofuel cell. The maximum power density delivered by the assembled glucose/O(2) biofuel cell could reach 64.0 μW cm(-2) at a cell voltage of 0.3 V with 40 mM glucose.

Abstract:Electrode supports play a significant role in the assembly of high-performance biofuel cells (BFCs) since they connect the active center of biocatalysts and the charge collectors directly. In this manuscript, novel nanostructured multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD-MWCNT films) as electrode supports for high-performance BFCs. Flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase and laccase were modified on EPD-MWCNT films to fabricate the bioanodes and biocathodes, respectively, with Os-complexes as mediators. For comparison, drop-casted MWCNT films or buckypapers have been prepared and adopted for the construction of BFCs with the same biocatalysts. EPD-MWCNT films which have vegetable sponge-like networks should be the optimal electrode supports for glucose/O-2 BFCs with higher power density. The EPD-MWCNT films based glucose/O-2 BFC showed a high maximum power density of 0.43 +/- 0.03 mW cm(-2) and open circuit voltage of 0.59 V, which is significantly superior to those values of the BFCs based on drop-cast MWCNT films or buckypapers, contributing to the electrode supports of EPD-MWCNT films with vegetable sponge-like nanostructure. Moreover, the BFC retained 56% of its original power density even after continuous operation for 7 days. Our findings would open an avenue for the development of more efficient BFCs with EPD-MWCNT films as the electrode supports.

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG) structures, which possess abundant high-index facets, kinks, and steps, have been demonstrated as effective catalysts for the glucose electrooxidation in biofuel cells. Herein, we designed surface-clean NPG structures with high-index facets by a trisodium citrate (Na(3)Cit) self-initiated reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) in a water-ice bath followed by a kinetically controlled self-assembly manner. This strategy breaks through the traditional trisodium citrate thermal-reducing chloroauric acid approach where solutions are required to heat to a certain temperature for the reaction to initiate. However, herein, the surface-clean NPG structures yielded highly enhanced catalytic activity in glucose electrooxidation with approximately 9 A cm(-2) mg(-1) current density, which is over 20 times higher than that of Au nanoparticles devised by Turkevich (Turkevich-Au NPs) under the same conditions. This remarkable electrocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the large electrochemically active surface area, clean surface, and high-index facets or highly active sites of the porous structure. The employment of the surface-clean NPG with high-index facets for glucose electrooxidation promises a substantial improvement in the current biofuel cell technology and indicates the potential of biofuel cells in practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Presently, one of the most important aspects for the development of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) is to synthesize the novel electrode materials that possess high current density, low open-circuit voltage (OCV) and long-term stability. To achieve the above attributes, lots of new strategies are being used by the researchers for the development of advanced materials. Nowadays, nanomaterials and nanocomposites are the promising material that has been utilized as effective electrode material in solar cells, supercapacitors and biofuel cells application. Herein, we account for a novel electrocatalyst as electrode material that comprised ZnO nanoparticles decorated on the surface of polyindole (PIn)-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), for the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme and mediator (Ferritin). The PIn-MWCNT scaffold is prepared via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of indole on the surface of MWCNT and assessed by myriad techniques. The micrograph of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) designated the interconnected morphology of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirm the crystallinity and different functional groups available in the synthesized material, respectively. The electrochemical assessment demonstrates that the ZnO/PIn-MWCNT/Frt/GOx nanobiocatalyst exhibits much higher electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose with a maximum current density of 4.9 mA cm −2 by consuming 50 mM glucose concentration in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) (pH 7.4) as the testing solution by applying 100 mVs −1 scan rates. The outcomes reflect that the as-prepared ZnO/PIn-MWCNTs/Frt/GOx biocomposite is a promising bioanode for the development of EBFCs.
