Abstract:Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) porous ceramic foams were fabricated using YSZ microspheres with holes on the surface to determine their properties as insulation materials. Highly porous YSZ ceramics with bimodal pore structures, such as internal pores in single hollow spheres and external pores between the spheres, were successfully prepared using YSZ spheres as raw materials. Additionally, holes were added to the shells to reduce continuous thermal pathways and significantly enhance the insulation properties. Furthermore, by adding holes on the surface of the sphere, the porous foams using a hollow sphere exhibit a maximized porosity of 80.69%, remarkably enhanced their insulation properties with low thermal conductivity (0.10 W/m-K), and have sufficient compressive strength to protect the green body (5.7 MPa). The mechanical strength of the YSZ porous foam was maintained owing to the uniform arrangement of the supports.

Abstract:Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (ZrO 2 -8 mol% Y 2 O 3 , YSZ) ceramics with ultra-low thermal conductivity (as low as 0.06 W/mK) could be fabricated by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting process with low solid loadings of 10 and 15 vol%. High porosity (52–76%) and fine pores with average pore size of 0.7–1.8 μm formed after sintering at 1350–1550 °C. These air-containing pores were believed to affect the through-thickness heat transfer propagation, resulting in low thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of porous YSZ ceramics with different porosities fits well with computed values derived from Effective Medium Theory (EMT).

Abstract:In this work, the preparation of foam-gelcasting was simplified with a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride (Isobam), avoiding the traditional gelling system including many additives such as monomer, cross-linking agent, initiator and catalyst. Highly porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics with 76.2–84.9% porosity were prepared via foam-gelcasting method using YSZ powder as the raw material, Isobam as the dispersant and gelling agent, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate as the foaming agent and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the foam stabilizing agent. The effects of solid loading, the content of foaming agent as well as sintering temperature were investigated. With the increase in solid loading of slurries, lower porosity was obtained, and the compressive strength and thermal conductivity showed a tendency of increase. Porous YSZ ceramics with compressive strength of 0.69–3.66 MPa showed low thermal conductivity in the range of 0.137–0.254 W/(m·K) at room temperature. The as-prepared sample showed good thermal insulating performance at high temperature. The km in GM model was during 0.4–0.7, which indicated the pore structure containing the internal and external porosities. This work provides a facile method for the fabrication of porous YSZ ceramics which can be potentially applied as thermal insulation materials at high temperature.

Abstract:The bulk porous yttrium oxide xerogels with extraordinary low density have been synthesized from the chloride salt by the addition of N-Methylformamide (NFA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The high porosity and very low density (approximate to 0.1 g/cm(3)) could be obtained for yttrium oxide xerogels. No apparent shrinkage could be observed when the xerogels were heat treated at lower temperature (<= 1000 degrees C), which indicated that the bulk porous yttrium oxide xerogels had a good thermal stability at the higher temperature. The SEM images show that the xerogels present the flake accumulation and the complex structure containing many pores and cavities. The cubic crystalline yttrium oxide phase could be obtained when xerogels were heat treated at 700 degrees C or higher temperatures.

Abstract:The previous report of this work has demonstrated the fabrication and properties of porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics with unidirectionally aligned pore channels. As a follow-up study, the present work aims at lowering the thermal conductivity of the porous YSZ ceramics by silica aerogels impregnation. The porous YSZ ceramics were immersed in an about-to-gel silica sol. Both the unidirectionally aligned pore channels and the inter-grain pores by grain stacking in the channel-pore wall of the porous YSZ ceramics were impregnated with the silica sol. After aging and supercritical drying, silica aerogels formed in the macroporous network of the porous YSZ ceramics with unidirectionally aligned pore channels. The influences of silica aerogel impregnation on the microstructure and properties of porous YSZ ceramics with unidirectional aligned pore channels were investigated. The porosity decreased after impregnation with silica aerogels. Both microstructure observation and pore size distribution indicated that both channel-pore size and inter-grain pore-size decreased significantly after impregnation with silica aerogels. Impregnating porous YSZ ceramics with silica aerogels remarkably lowered the room-temperature thermal conductivity and enhanced the compressive strength. The as-fabricated materials are thus suitable for applications in bulk thermal isolators.

Abstract:Inspired by nest structure, highly porous fibrous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics were fabricated through tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting process and pressureless sintering by using YSZ fibers as raw material and adding K2SO4 as removable sintering aid. Different sintering temperature and soaking time were investigated to achieve optimal thermal and mechanical properties. The results show that all specimens consist of crystallized t-YSZ phase. Fibers interconnect with good interfacial bonding on junctions. Under higher sintering temperature, porosity drops gradually while compressive strength increases significantly. With prolonged soaking time, there is no obvious change in porosity and compressive strength increases gradually. All specimens have uniformly distributed pores with average size of 30.2μm and show good structural stability at high temperature. Ultra-low thermal conductivity is achieved and ductile fracture mode with high elongation makes it more applicable in high-temperature thermal insulating applications.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:Hollow mesoporous silica spheres with uniform size and morphology have been successfully synthesized in a facile route using PVP and CTAB as co-templates at room temperature. XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis, FE-SEM, TEM and UV–vis are used for the characterization. The hexagonally ordered pore channels are formed on the shell. These hollow mesoporous silica spheres have been proven to store much more guest molecules than conventional MCM-41, with more than half of them being held in the hollow cores.

Abstract:Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics with aligned and gradient pore channels were fabricated by the unidirectional freezing of aqueous suspensions with distinct solid loadings under different sintering temperatures. The results indicate that the microstructure and response properties could be tailored by adjusting the solid loading and sintering temperature. The pore channel size increased with the increase of solid loading or the decrease of sintering temperature, regardless of microstructure changes in an individual sample. With increasing the solid loading and sintering temperature, the compressive strength (7.18–30.76 MPa) increased owing to the lower porosity of individual samples. The fabricated samples had increasing Darcian and non-Darcian constants along the freezing direction due to the enhanced pore size and open porosity. The Darcian and non-Darcian constants in this paper were in the range of 7.06 × 10−13 to 5.92 × 10−12 m2 and 1.66 × 10−7 to 8.83 × 10−7 m, respectively. These results are of practical value for the fabrication and optimization of porous ceramics in the applications of filters and membrane supports.

Abstract:The compression strength and breakage mechanism of a hierarchical porous sphere in hundred-micron size were investigated in the present work. 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) microspheres were prepared by electro-spraying associated with phase inversion (ES-PI) technique. The characteristic compression strengths of the ES-PI microspheres were measured by quasi-static uniaxial compression test, which increased from 19 MPa to 155 MPa as the sintering temperature increased from 1100 °C to 1400 °C. With the similar porosity, the compression strength of the hierarchical structure microsphere was almost three times higher than that of the hollow microsphere. Further, the breakage mechanism of the ES-PI microspheres was proposed by the honeycomb model of cellular materials, which suggested that the breakage of the ES-PI microsphere initiated from the elastic instability of the walls around the finger-like pores. These findings can help the mechanical performance optimization for ceramic microspheres with lightweight structure.

Abstract:This study describes the experimental results of thermal diffusivity, specific heat at constant pressure, and thermal conductivity of porous 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics in a temperature range from room temperature to 1,400 °C. It is a follow-up study of the earlier report titled by “Porous YSZ ceramics with ultra-low thermal conductivity”, which focused on the room-temperature thermal conductivity. The thermal diffusivity of porous YSZ ceramics decreased with the increase of the measurement temperature up to 600–1,000 °C, followed by an increasing trend with increasing temperature. The specific heat did not exhibit any significant dependence on sintering temperature and agreed with literature data. The thermal conductivity of the porous YSZ ceramics showed an insensitive tendency of change with measurement temperature. The thermal conductivity fell in groups by the sintering temperature level. This investigation also discussed an appropriate sintering temperature of porous YSZ ceramics, which had both low thermal conductivity and high strength required by the practical service.

Abstract:Core-shell structured cermet powders with thermal conductivity anisotropy have been brought into focus because they have a great potential application as the horizontal thermal diffusion layer material in multilayer thermal protective coating (TPC). In this contribution, core-shell structured cermet powders were fabricated by electroless deposition (ED) of Cu on yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) powder. The surface of YSZ powder was uniformly coated with a thin Cu shell of approximately 2 μm. Through X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis, it was found that trace CuO and Cu2O oxides formed on the surface of Cu shell. Results of thermal spraying adaptability analysis show the flowability of core-shell structured cermet powder improved to 56.8 s/50 g, which conforms better to the basic requirements of thermal spraying material. By differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests, the powder had good thermal stability. In particular, between 25 and 500 °C, the anisotropy thermal conductivity rose higher than 1.8 and it remained stable at approximately 1.6 with temperature as high as 900 °C. All these features promise it a high-performance thermal conductivity anisotropy material.

Abstract:Low lattice thermal conductivity is of great importance for thermoelectric materials and thermal barrier materials. Interstitial or substitutional atoms in the host lattice fundamentally introduce point defects to scatter phonons, which is, however, not sufficient for achieving glass-like thermal conductivity. Here, we fabricated the Yb-filled CoSb3 skutterudites with an ultra-high Yb filling fraction, in which the coexistence of ordered superstructures and nano/sub-nano scale inhomogeneous Yb interstitials was revealed. An ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity approaching the glass limit was achieved due to the enhanced rattling effect from the ultra-high Yb filling fraction and extra phonon scattering from the ordered superstructures, nanoscale inhomogeneous Yb fillers, and high-density lattice strain caused by the ordered and modulated fillers. Modulating the distribution of doping atoms opens a new dimension for doping atoms to achieve ultra-low thermal conductivities for thermoelectric materials and thermal barrier materials beyond the point defects scattering perspective.

Abstract:This study introduced a new structural/functional porous yttrium silicate (Y2SiO5) ceramic, which was prepared using a water-based freeze-casting technique. Moreover, the effects of sintering temperature on the microstructure, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and dielectric properties of porous Y2SiO5 ceramics were investigated. The microstructure consisting of 3-D interconnected pores were created using the freezing process, and the formation mechanism was discussed. The microstructure observation indicated an increase in the sintering temperature from 1250°C to 1450°C and a decrease in porosity from 71% to 62%. In addition, the pore channel size decreased from 50μm to 25μm, but the average grain size increased from 1.0μm to 3.0μm. Consequently, the compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and dielectric constant of the porous Y2SiO5 ceramics increased from 3.34MPa to 16.51MPa, from 0.07W/mK to 0.22W/mK, and from 1.89 to 2.22, respectively. Porous Y2SiO5 ceramics with such properties can be applied to ultra-high temperature broadband radome structures and thermal insulators. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
Low-temperature facile template synthesis of crystalline inorganic composite hollow spheres

Abstract:This report presents a facile approach for the low-temperature synthesis of crystalline inorganic-oxide composite hollow spheres by employing the bulk controlled synthesis of inorganic-oxide nanocrystals with polymer spheres as templates. The sulfonated polystyrene gel layer can adsorb the target precursor and induce inorganic nanocrystals to grow on the template in situ. The crystalline phase and morphology of the composite shell is tunable. By simply adjusting the acidity of the titania sol, crystalline titania composite hollow spheres with tunable crystalline phases of anatase, rutile, or a mixture of both were achieved. The approach is general and has been extended to synthesize the representative perovskite oxide (barium and strontium titanate) composite hollow spheres. The traditional thermal treatment for crystallite transformation is not required, thus intact shells can be guaranteed. The combination of oxide properties such as high refractive index, high dielectric constant, and catalytic ability with the cavity of the hollow spheres is promising for applications such as opacifiers, photonic crystals, high-kappa-gate dielectrics, and photocatalysis.
Influence of Solid Loading in the Gel-Casting Process on the Microstructure and Properties of Porous YSZ Ceramics

Abstract:With the development of hypersonic space vehicles for near space, high requirements have been put forward to heat insulation materials. In this work, porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (8 mol%Y2O3-ZrO2, YSZ) ceramics with different solid loading were fabricated by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting process. After sintered at the same conditions (1550 °C for 2 h), the sintered YSZ ceramics with different porosity, open porosity, pore size distribution and microstructure were obtained. The relationships between compressive strength and microstructure, room-temperature thermal conductivity and microstructure were discussed, respectively. Porous YSZ ceramics with porosity ranging from 56.4% to 66.9% were fabricated by adjusting the solid loading in the initial slurry. A uniform pore size distribution was observed in each sample. The compressive strength of porous YSZ ceramics was 26.8-35.0 MPa. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of porous YSZ ceramics was between 0.205 W/(m×K) and 0.337 W/(m×K). Moreover, the compressive strength and the thermal conductivity at room temperature of the porous YSZ ceramics decreased with the increase of porosity, respectively.
