Abstract:Motivated by the recent synthesis of an ultrathin film of layered Bi2O2Se [Wu et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 12, 530 (2017); Wu et al., Nano Lett. 17, 3021 (2017)], we have systematically studied the thermoelectric properties of a Bi2O2Se nanosheet using first principles density functional theory combined with semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated results indicate that the Bi2O2Se nanosheet exhibits a figure of merit (ZT) of 3.35 for optimal n-type doping at 800 K, which is much larger than the ZT value of 2.6 at 923 K in SnSe known as the most efficient thermoelectric material [Zhao et al., Nature 508, 373 (2014)]. Equally important, the high ZT in the n-type doped Bi2O2Se nanosheet highlights the efficiency of the reduced dimension on improving thermoelectric performance as compared with strain engineering by which the ZT of n-type doped bulk Bi2O2Se cannot be effectively enhanced. Synthesis and Characterization of Bi 2 Se 3 Thermoelectric Nanopowders

Abstract:In order to synthesize Bi2Se3 nanopowders by a solvothermal synthesis method, ethylenediamine, dimethylfor- mamide, acetone, absolute ethanol, and deionized water were respectively used as a solvent, using BiCl3 and elemental Se powders as starting materials and KBH4 as a reductant at 180 o C for different times. X-ray diffraction was used for exam- ining the phase composition of the products. The results showed that pure Bi2Se3 nanopowders were successfully synthe- sized only when deionized water was used as the solvent. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that the nanopowders consisted of big polygonal nanosheets and small irregular nanoparticles. The formation mechanism of the Bi2Se3 nanosheets and nanoparticles was proposed.

Abstract:In this study, large-scale synthesis of Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution was achieved through a rapid-injection route. These nanoparticles showed a monodisperse and quasi-spherical morphology. The Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticle-based bulk materials were then prepared by hot-pressed sinter of the nanoparticles, and their thermoelectric performances were systematically studied. Due to the reduced lattice thermal conductivity from enhanced phonon scattering at the grain interfaces of the bulk materials, the maximum ZT value of the Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 bulk materials reached 0.50 at 575 K.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyselenide (Bi2O2Se) attracts great interest as a potential n-type complement to p-type thermoelectric oxides in practical applications. Previous investigations were generally focused on polycrystals. Here, we performed a study on the thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se single crystals. Our samples exhibit electron mobility as high as 250 cm2 V−1 s−1 and thermal conductivity as low as 2 W m−1 K−1 near room temperature. The maximized figure of merit is yielded to be 0.188 at 390 K, higher than that of polycrystals. Consequently, a rough estimation of the phonon mean free path (ℓph) from the kinetic model amounts to 12 Å at 390 K and follows a T−1 behavior. An extrapolation of ℓph to higher temperatures indicates that this system approaches the Ioffe–Regel limit at about 1100 K. In light of the phonon dispersions, we argue that the ultralow ℓph is attributed to intense anharmonic phonon–phonon scattering, including the Umklapp process and acoustic to optical phonon scattering. Our results suggest that single crystals provide a further improvement of thermoelectric performance of Bi2O2Se.
Graphite Nanosheets as Multifunctional Nanoinclusions to Boost the Thermoelectric Performance of the Shear‐Exfoliated Bi2O2Se

Abstract:A high ZT of 0.73 at 773 K is achieved in graphite/Bi2O2Se hybrid bulk materials. Novel liquid‐phase shear exfoliation enables strong texturing effect on the structure, and graphite layers act as unique "expressways" to accelerate the carrier mobility. The single parabolic band model confirms the optimized carrier density and ZT. As an eco‐friendly oxide‐based thermoelectric material, Bi2O2Se exhibits considerable potential for practical device application, but its low electrical conductivity needs to be further improved to achieve higher thermoelectric performance. Here, a record‐high figure of merit, ZT of >0.7 at 773 K in the shear‐exfoliated nanostructured Bi2O2Se with graphite nanosheets as multifunctional secondary nanoinclusions, is achieved. The introduced graphite nanosheets regularize the arrangement of Bi2O2Se nanograins, strengthen the anisotropy, and act as the "expressway" to improve the electrical conductivity by simultaneously enhancing the electron carrier concentration and mobility of the hybrid materials, leading to a high power factor of ≈6.0 μW cm–1 K–2 at 773 K. Also, the liquid‐phase shear exfoliation refines both graphite and Bi2O2Se into nanosheets. Moreover, the as‐sintered hybrid bulk materials composed of these nanosheets possess dense grain and phase boundaries, as well as various lattice imperfections, such as lattice distortions and stacking faults formed by physical shearing, which can significantly scatter the phonons with different wavelengths and in turn contribute to a low thermal conductivity of only 0.63 W m–1 K–1 at 773 K, both contributing to a competitive ZT of ≈0.73 at this temperature, indicating the great potential for practical applications.

Ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced power generation efficiency realized in Bi2Te2.7Se0.3/Bi2S3 nanocomposites

Abstract:The decrease in lattice thermal conductivity is one of the most effective methods for enhancing thermoelectric properties. Achieving lattice thermal conductivity close to the theoretical limit is extremely difficult while maintaining an impressive power factor. By introducing ultrafine bismuth sulfide nanograins, strong phonon scattering was generated by associated multiscale lattice defects to further gain a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.244 W/m/K approaching Clarke's limitation of 0.242 W/m/K. Simultaneously, the electrical conductivity was increased by S diffusion and suppression of the antisite defects, and a high power factor was maintained to produce an improved ZT peak of 1.2 at 473 K for the Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 + 1 wt% Bi2S3 #2 sample. This sample was used to fabricate a small device with a p-leg, and the direct conversion efficiency reached 4.39%. Inverse changes in hardness and Young's modulus in conjunction with Bi2S3 content are first reported in thermoelectric materials, which has potential assistance in synchronously improving their mechanical and thermoelectric properties.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Bi2O2Se/Ag nanocomposites were synthesized by spark plasma sintering process. Their thermoelectric properties were evaluated from 300 to 673 K. With the addition of silver, the conductive second phase Ag2Se and Ag can be observed, which results in a significant enhancement of electrical conductivity. The maximum conductivity is 691.8 S cm(-1) for Bi2O2Se/20 vol.% Ag, which increased nearly 500 higher times than the pure Bi2O2Se bulk. ZT value can be enhanced greatly, ~0.07, for Bi2O2Se/5 vol.% Ag at 673 K, which is two times larger than the pure sample.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Bi2−xO2Se ceramics were synthesized by spark plasma sintering process. Their thermoelectric properties were evaluated from 300 to 773 K. All the samples are layered structure with a tetragonal phase. The introduction of Bi deficiencies will cause the orientation alignment and change of effective mass. As a result, a significant enhancement of thermoelectric performance was achieved. The maximum of Seebeck coefficient is −568.8 μV/K for Bi1.9O2Se at 773 K, much larger than −445.6 μV/K for pristine Bi2O2Se. Featured with very low thermal conductivity [~0.6 W·(m·K)−1] and an optimized electrical conductivity, ZT at 773 K is significantly increased from 0.05 for pristine Bi2O2Se to 0.12 for Bi1.9O2Se by introducing Bi deficiencies, which makes it a promising candidate for medium temperature thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:BiCuSeO is a promising thermoelectric material but needs a complicated synthesis process. In this work, fine‐grained BiCuSeO samples with high phase purity were synthesized by a combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). It is found that BiCuSeO compounds can be formed by the reaction between BiSe and CuO, after BiSe appeared firstly when using Bi, Se, and CuO as raw materials during MA process. The electrical conductivity of the corresponding bulk attains a modest enhancement due to the significantly increased carrier concentration although the carrier mobility was reduced compared with the sample prepared by classical solid‐state reaction. The total thermal conductivity is below 0.7 W/mK in the whole measured temperature range, which is attributable to the increased defects and gain boundaries. As a result, a relatively high ZT value of 0.50 was obtained for the pristine BiCuSeO sample. In addition, when Bi was replaced by Ca element, the electrical transport property of the samples was improved, resulting in an enhancement of ZT in the whole measured temperature range.

Abstract:We report the investigation of the thermoelectric properties of large-scale solution-synthesized Bi2Te3 nanocomposites prepared from nanowires hotpressed into bulk pellets. A third element, Se, is introduced to tune the carrier concentration of the nanocomposites. Due to the Se doping, the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of the nanocomposites is significantly enhanced due to the increased power factor and reduced thermal conductivity. We also find that thermal transport in our hot-pressed pellets is anisotropic, which results in different thermal conductivities along the in-plane and cross-plane directions. Theoretical calculations for both electronic and thermal transport are carried out to establish fundamental understanding of the material system and provide directions for further ZT optimization with adjustments to carrier concentration and mobility.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline binary Bi2Te3 powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal method from BiCl3 and pure tellurium at different temperature. XRD analysis and TEM observation showed that the average grain sizes increase from 15 to 35nm with the increase of the synthesis temperature from 120 to 250°C. Novel Bi2Te3 based nanocomposites were prepared by hot pressing from 90wt.% zone-melted alloys and 10wt.% hydrothermally synthesized nanopowders. It was found that the nanosized powders are effective to reduce the thermal conductivity stronger than the electrical conductivity, a result that improves the figure of merit of a nanocomposite. A maximal ZT value of 0.83 has been obtained. Further improvement on the figure of merit of the nanocomposites are considered to be possible by doping the nanopowders and optimizing the composition of the base alloys.

Abstract:we have reported the synthesis, electrical resistivity rho(T), Hall coefficient (R-H ) and magnetoresistance (MR) of Bi2O2Se single crystals with layered tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). The lattice parameters obtained after Rietveld refinement are a = b = 3.897 angstrom, c = 12.237 a, respectively. rho(T) and R-H measured in the temperature range from 2 K to 300 K show high carrier concentration extrinsic semiconductor behavior. At higher temperatures (130-300 K), the resistivity is dominated by phonon scattering mechanism, as manifested by rho(T) proportional to T-1.5 . The magnetic field dependence of resistivity is positive in the whole temperature range. The MR at 2 K increase monotonically with magnetic field and manifest very weak saturate trend up to 9 T where it reaches its maximum value with Delta rho(xx)/rho(xx) approximate to 100%.

Abstract:Bi2O2Se is a potential medium-temperature n-type thermoelectric material owing to its lower lattice thermal conductivity and larger Seebeck coefficient. However, very low electrical conductivity of pristine polycrystalline Bi2O2Se hinders further enhancement of its thermoelectric performance. In this work, the thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se were investigated by Ti-doping with the shear exfoliation-restacking process. The results show that both the electron content and mobility can be further improved by Ti-doping with the shear exfoliation-restacking process, thus a higher electrical conductivity can be obtained. (e.g., 368 S cm(-1) of Bi1.99Ti0.01O2Se at room temperature) On the other hand, the thermal conductivity of Bi1.99Ti0.01O2Se is suppressed to 0.84 Wm(-1) K-1 at 772 K. Finally, the ZT peak of Bi1.99Ti0.01O2Se is raised to 0.56, which is 1.2 times of that of un-doped sample. The results show that the thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se can be further optimized by Ti doping with the shear exfoliation-restacking process. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Realization of an ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity in Bi2AgxSe3 nanostructures for enhanced thermoelectric performance

Abstract:Bismuth Selenide is a Tellurium free topological insulator in V-VI compounds with an excellent thermoelectric performance from room temperature to mid-temperature region. Herein, hydrothermally prepared polycrystalline Bi2AgxSe3 nanostructures have been reported for thermoelectric application. The crystal structure identification and morphology with the elemental presence were analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), HR-SEM with EDS (High resolution scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray), and HR-TEM (High-resolution transmission electron microscope) measurements. The reduced lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced electrical transport properties synergistically boost the thermoelectric properties through the highly-dense stacking faults with the presence of dislocations. The IFFT (Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) pattern reveals the existence of stacking faults and dislocations. These highly dense stacking faults and dislocations act as active phonon scattering centers, which can contribute to effective phonon scattering resultsin extremely low lattice thermal conduction of 0.3 W/mK at 543 K. On the other hand, the involvement of phonon-phonon scattering primarily reduced the lattice thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures. In addition, phonon-carrier scattering was less compared to phonon-phonon scattering at elevated temperature region. Moreover, the enhancement of electrical conductivity and controlled reduction of the Seebeck coefficient plays a vital role in achieving the maximum power factor of 335 μW/mK2 at 543 K due to the energy filtering effect. The synergistic combination of low thermal conduction and the maximum power factor helps to achieve the high peak zT of 0.3 at 543 K.

Abstract:In this work, the thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se by Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 addition through liquid assisted shear exfoliation-restacking (LASE-R) process were studied. The results show that the Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 can alloy with Bi2O2Se and reduce the band gap, which introduce more electrons and improve the electrical conductivity of Bi2O2Se. Moreover, Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 addition act as a liquid phase sintering aids here, which can promote crystal growth and increase the sintering density of Bi2O2Se. Owing to the offset effect between |S| and a, the absolute Seebeck coefficient |S| of all samples drops first and then rises with the increase of Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 content. Thus, the power factor is effectively improved. In addition, the lattice thermal conductivity is also suppressed to the nearly minimum theoretical limit, which should be attributed to the enhanced phonon -scattering by alloying. Therefore, a high figure of merit of 0.7 at 772 K was achieved for Bi2O2Se-0.3 mol% Bi2Te2.7Se0.3.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Polycrystalline Bicuseo Oxide As A Potential Thermoelectric Material

Abstract:This work revealed that BiCuSeO oxyselenide is a potential oxide-based thermoelectric material, whose dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) reaches similar to 0.70 at 773 K. High phase-purity BiCuSeO polycrystalline materials with fine grains were synthesized by a facile method combining a solid-state reaction and spark plasma sintering. Purifying the constitutive phase and reducing the grain sizes by introducing a high-energy ball milling process before spark plasma sintering were found to be effective in property enhancement. The resultant single-phased BiCuSeO sample derived from ball-milled powders shows good electrical conductivity above 4.0 x 10(3) S m(-1) and a large Seebeck coefficient above 200 mu V K-1. This compound has a low thermal conductivity (similar to 0.5 W m(-1) K-1), which is associated with its low phonon transport speed and Young's modulus. Results indicated that BiCuSeO-based materials are promising for energy conversion applications in the moderate temperature range.

Abstract:Bi2Se3, as a three-dimensional topological insulator, has attracted worldwide attention for its unique surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of high-quality single-crystalline Bi2Se3 nanowires. Bi2Se3 nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method via goldcatalyzed vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. The structure and morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. In magnetotransport measurements, the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect was observed in a nanowire-based nanodevice, suggesting the existence of surface states in Bi2Se3 nanowires.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of Solution Grown Bi2te3-Xsex Nanoplatelet Composites

Abstract:We report on the enhanced thermoelectric properties of selenium (Se) doped bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3-xSex) nanoplatelet (NP) composites synthesized by the polyol method. Variation of the Se composition within NPs is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. While the calculated lattice parameters closely follow the Vegard's law, a discontinuity in the shifting of the high frequency (E-g(2) and A(lg)(2)) phonon modes illustrates a two mode behavior for Bi2Te3-xSex NPs. The electrical resistivity (rho) of spark plasma sintered pellet composites shows metallic conduction for pure Bi2Te3 NP composites and semiconducting behavior for intermediate Se compositions. The thermal conductivity (kappa) for all NP composites is much smaller than the bulk values and is dominated by microstructural grain boundary scattering. With temperature dependent electrical and thermal transport measurements, we show that both the thermoelectric power S (-259 mu V/K) and the figure of merit ZT (0.54) are enhanced by nearly a factor of 4 for SPS pellets of Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 in comparison to Bi2Te3 NP composites. Tentatively, such an enhancement of the thermoelectric performance in nanoplatelet composites is attributed to the energy filtering of low energy electrons by abundant grain boundaries in aligned nanocomposites.

Abstract:BiCuSeO oxyselenide is a promising oxide-based thermoelectric material in the moderate temperature range, but the low electrical conductivity inhibits its further application in the field of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, we report on the effects that composite structures have an enhancement to the electrical conductivity of BiCuSeO. Here, a series of two-phase nanocomposites comprising of BiCuSeO and Cu2Se have been synthesized by SPS. Images obtained via electron microscope reveal that the two constituents form the unique composites while retaining their individual morphological identities. Owing to the composite structure with a highly conductive nanoscale of copper selenides and sub-micrometer scale BiCuSeO, an enhancement to the thermoelectric performance is achieved. The ZT at 823 K is increased from 0.33 for pristine BiCuSeO to 0.44 by inserting 20 vol% Cu2Se. Our results state that the composite structure is an effective method to enhance the performance of BiCuSeO. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Thermoelectric Properties of Layered Oxyselenides with 3d Transition Metal Ions

Abstract:Layered oxychalcogenides have received extensive attention in the fields of magnetism, superconductivity, lithium battery, and luminescence due to their unique electronic, magnetic properties, and layered structure, among which layered oxyselenides have excellent and promising thermoelectric performance, such as BiCuSeO and Bi(2)LnO(4)Cu(2)Se(2). Here, we successfully synthesized Sr2MO2Cu2Se2 (M = Co, Ni, Zn) and Sr2FeO3CuSe and investigated the thermoelectric properties at a wide temperature range (298-923 K). They have a relatively high Seebeck coefficient (>300 mu V K-1) in medium to high temperature range and possess a low thermal conductivity. The power factor and ZT reach 65 mu W m(-1) K-1 and 0.07 at 923 K for intrinsic Sr2NiO2Cu2Se2, and a higher performance is expected to be achieved by strategies like carrier concentration optimization and band structure engineering.
