Abstract:We demonstrate directional output from a deformed disk laser of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. Unlike larger deformed cavity lasers, which exhibit universal output directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics, the far-field patterns differ between lasing modes. The directional emission results from weak coupling of isotropic high-quality modes to anisotropic low-quality modes, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. This mechanism makes it possible to control the output properties of wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a chaotic microcavity laser whose quality is comparable to typical nonchaotic microcavity lasers, yet it has the unique characteristic of unidirectional output. The cavity shape is a disk with the boundary defined by a curve called limaccedilon of Pascal. For a lasing mode of volume less than 0.2 mu m(3), the measured quality factor is 23 000. The record-high quality and small modal volume result in extremely low-lasing threshold. The spontaneous emission coupling efficiency is approximately 6% and is the reported value for a chaotic microcavity laser. All the lasing modes have one output beam in the same direction with a divergence angle less than 40 degrees. This universal directionality is determined by the chaotic ray dynamics in the open cavity.

Abstract:We reviewed our recent studies on chaotic microcavity lasers. Although most microcavities are designed to have regular shapes, boundary roughness, which is introduced unintentionally during the fabrication process, can throw the regular ray dynamics into chaos. Fortunately, the dynamical localization makes the perform- ance of microcavity lasers robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos. In a chaotic microcavity, the lasing modes may be pulled away from the cavity boundary to avoid the reduction of lasing gain by surface recombination. Moreover, the carriers injected to the central region of a cavity can contribute to lasing. Despite counter-intuitive, a chaotic microcav- ity laser could produces directional output beams. Unfortunately the threshold of chaotic microcavity lasers is usually high. We demon- strated that the lasing threshold in a fully chaotic open microcavity can be minimized by tailoring its shape factor.

Abstract:We report the design of a solid-state, micron-sized hemispherical cavity that yields significantly enhanced extraction efficiency with modest Purcell enhancement from embedded quantum emitters. A simple analytical model provides a guideline for the design and optimization of the structure, while finite-difference time-domain simulations are used for full analysis of the optimum structure. Cavity modes with up to 90% extraction efficiency, a Purcell enhancement factor >2, and a quality factor of ≈50 are achieved. In addition, Gaussian-like far-field beam profiles with low divergence are exhibited for several modes. These monolithic cavities are promising for solid-state emitters buried in a high dielectric environment, such as self-assembled quantum dots and optically active defects in diamond.

Abstract:We reported experimentally a new type of on-chip whispering gallery microcavity which supported both highly unidirectional emission and ultra-high-Q factors exceeding 100 million in near infrared. The highly unidirectional emission results from the chaos-assisted tunneling, which represents a formal analogue to the dynamical tunneling known as a pure quantum mechanical phenomenon. By doping erbium, the unidirectional-emission lasing was observed in 1550 nm band with the threshold as low as 2 µW.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:The mechanism of unidirectional emission of high Q Whispering Gallery mode in deformed circular micro- cavities is studied and firstly presented in this paper. In phase space, light in the chaotic sea leaks out the cavity through the refraction regions, whose positions are controlled by stable islands. Abstract:Ultra-high-Q optical whispering gallery microcavities are promising platforms for fundamental studies and applied photonics. A new type of on-chip microcavity is experimentally realized, which features both highly unidirectional emission and ultra-high-Q factors exceeding 100 million in near infrared. Abstract:Manipulating light dynamics in optical microcavities has been made mainly either in real or momentum space. Here we report a phase-space tailoring scheme, simultaneously incorporating spatial and momentum dimensions, to enable deterministic and in situ regulation of photon transport in a chaotic microcavity. In the time domain, the chaotic photon transport to the leaky region can be suppressed, and the cavity resonant modes show stronger temporal confinement with quality factors being improved by more than 1 order of magnitude. In the spatial domain, the emission direction of the cavity field is controlled on demand through rerouting chaotic photons to a desired channel, which is verified experimentally by the far-field pattern of a quantum-dot microlaser. This work paves a way to in situ study of chaotic physics and promoting advanced applications such as arbitrary light routing, ultrafast random bit generation, and multifunctional on-chip lasers.

Abstract:Spectrally and spatially varying ensembles of emitters embedded into waveguides are ever-present in both well-established and emerging technologies. If control of collective excitations can be attained, a plethora of coherent quantum dynamics and applications may be realized on-chip in the scalable paradigm of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED).Here, we investigate inhomogeneously broadened ensembles embedded with subwavelength spatial extent into waveguides employed as single effective and coherent emitters. We develop a method permitting the approximate analysis and simulation of such mesoscopic systems featuring many emitters, and show how collective resonances are observable within the waveguide transmission spectrum once their linewidth exceeds the inhomogeneous line. In particular, this allows for near-unity and tailorable non-Lorentzian extinction of waveguide photons overcoming large inhomogeneous broadening present in current state-of-the-art. As a particular illustration possible in such existing experiments, we consider the classic emulation of the cavity QED (CQED) paradigm here using ensembles of rare-earth ions as coherent mirrors and qubits and demonstrate the possibility of strong coupling given existing restrictions on inhomogeneous broadening and ensemble spatial extent. This work introduces coherent ensemble dynamics in the solid-state to WQED and extends the realm to spectrally tailorable emitters.

Abstract:Optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities are promising candidates for basic research and optoelectronic applications. Due to the isotropic emission property resulting from the rotational symmetry, traditional WGM microcavities have to rely on external couplers to excite the modes and collect their emission. One of the most possible solutions is to deform microcavities from rotational symmetry, which could provide directional emission instead of isotropic characteristic. Here we report the first experimental realization of on-chip microcavities which support both highly unidirectional emission and ultra-high Q factors. The demonstrated Q factor exceeds 100 million in near infrared. By doping erbium into the deformed microcavity, lasing action in 1550 nm band was observed under convenient free-space optical pumping, with the threshold as low as 2 mu W. Remarkably, the lasing emission is along a single direction with a narrow divergence angle about 10 degrees.

Abstract:The general principles of the unidirectional emission of a high-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) in deformed circular microcavities are studied and presented in this paper. In the phase space of deformed microcavities, light in the chaotic sea leaks out from the cavity through specific refraction regions, the positions of which are determined by the stable islands and the unstable manifolds. By changing the cavity shape, we can tune the positions of the refraction regions, as well as fixed points, to achieve unidirectional emission with narrow angular divergence. The microcavity with high-Q and unidirectional emission makes high-efficient free-space excitation and collection possible; thus, it can be applied for far-field detection of nanoparticles and low-threshold lasers with collimated emission.

Abstract:Optical microdisk cavities with certain asymmetric shapes are known to possess unidirectional far-field emission properties. Here, we investigate arrays of these dielectric microresonators with respect to their emission properties resulting from the coherent behaviour of the coupled constituents. This approach is inspired by electronic mesoscopic physics where the additional interference effects are known to enhance the properties of the individual system. As an example we study the linear arrangement of nominally identical Limaçon-shaped cavities and find mostly an increase of the portion of directional emitted light while its angular spread is largely diminished from 20 degrees for the single cavity to about 3 degrees for a linear array of 10 Limaçon resonators, in fair agreement with a simple array model. Moreover, by varying the inter-cavity distance we observe windows of reversion of the emission directionality and super-directionality that can be interesting for applications. We introduce a generalized array factor model that takes the coupling into account.

Abstract:We design coupled optical microcavities and report directional light emission from high-Q modes for a broad range of refractive indices. The system consists of a circular cavity that provides a high-Q mode in the form of a whispering gallery mode, whereas an adjacent deformed microcavity plays the role of a waveguide or collimator of the light transmitted from the circular cavity. As a result of this very simple, yet robust, concept we obtain high-Q modes with promising directional emission characteristics. No information about phase space is required, and the proposed scheme can be easily realized in experiments.

Abstract:We report a novel hemispherical micro-cavity that is comprised of a planar integrated semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror, and an external, concave micro-mirror having a radius of curvature $50\mathrm{\mu m}$. The integrated DBR mirror containing quantum dots (QD), is designed to locate the QDs at an antinode of the field in order to maximize the interaction between the QD and the cavity. The concave micro-mirror, with high-reflectivity over a large solid-angle, creates a diffraction-limited (sub-micron) mode-waist at the planar mirror, leading to a large coupling constant between cavity mode and QD. The half-monolithic design gives more spatial and spectral tuning abilities, relatively to fully monolithic structures. This unique micro-cavity design will potentially enable us to both reach the cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) strong coupling regime and realize the deterministic generation of single photons on demand.
