Abstract:We propose to realize effective beam-splitter-like and two-mode-squeezing photon-photon interactions in a strong coupling optomechanical interface by exploiting detuned driving lasers. In this interface, the transitions between the optical system and the mechanical oscillator are suppressed by the large energy offsets, therefore protecting the photon-photon interactions from mechanical dissipations. Moreover, the destructive quantum interference between the eigenmodes of the interface is capable of further reducing the effects of initial mechanical thermal occupations. The interface can serve as a universal block for photon state engineering and hybrid quantum networks in high-temperature thermal bath and without the requirement of cooling the mechanical oscillator to the ground state.
Antibunching Photons in a Cavity Coupled to an Optomechanical System

Abstract:We study the photon statistics of a cavity linearly coupled to an optomechanical system via second-order correlation functions. Our calculations show that the cavity can exhibit strong photon antibunching even when optomechanical interaction in the optomechanical system is weak. The cooperation between the weak optomechanical interaction and the destructive interference between different paths for two-photon excitation leads to the efficient antibunching effect. Compared with the standard optomechanical system, the coupling between a cavity and an optomechanical system provides a method to relax the constraints to obtain a single photon by optomechanical interaction.

Abstract:In contrast to recent studies [Rabl, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 063601 (2011); Nunnenkamp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 063602 (2011)] on photon blockade that prevents subsequent photons from resonantly entering the cavity in optomechanical systems, we study the photon-induced tunneling that increases the probability of admitting subsequent photons in those systems. In particular, we analytically and numerically show how twoor three-photon tunneling can occur by avoiding single-photon blockade. Our study provides another way on photon control using a single mechanical resonator in optomechanical systems.

Abstract:Mechanical motion of photonic devices driven by optical forces provides a profound means of coupling between optical fields. The current focus of these optomechanical effects has been on cavity optomechanics systems in which co-localized optical and mechanical modes interact strongly to enable wave-mixing between photons and phonons and backaction cooling of mechanical modes. Alternatively, extended mechanical modes can also induce strong nonlocal effects on propagating optical fields or multiple localized optical modes at distances. Here, we demonstrate a novel multi-cavity optomechanical device: a "photon see-saw", in which torsional optomechanical motion can shuttle photons between two photonic crystal nanocavities. The resonance frequencies of the two cavities, one on each side of the see-saw, are modulated anti-symmetrically by the device's rotation. Pumping photons into one cavity excites optomechanical self-oscillation which strongly modulates the inter-cavity coupling and shuttles photons to the other empty cavity during every oscillation cycle in a well regulated fashion.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the second-order correlation function in a double-cavity optomechanical system, and a degenerate optical parametric amplifier is placed in each cavity. The first cavity is additionally driven by a weak classical laser field. The occurrence of strong photon antibunching effect in these two coupled cavities is observed. For suitable values of optomechanical coupling strength as well as photon hopping process, the system can exhibit a very strong photon antibunching effect. Our study also shows that the unconventional photon blockade occurs in both coupling, i.e. the weak coupling and the strong coupling regimes as compared to the conventional photon blockade which occurs only in the strong coupling regime. We get a very strong photon antibunching effect under the unconventional photon blockade mechanism than the conventional photon blockade mechanism. Our study can be also used for the generation of single photon in coupled nonlinear optomechanical systems.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide powerful platforms to manipulate photons and phonons, open potential applications for modern optical communications and precise measurements. With the refrigeration and ground-state cooling technologies, studies of cavity optomechanics are making significant progress towards the quantum regime including nonclassical state preparation, quantum state tomography, quantum information processing, and future quantum internet. With further research, it is found that abundant physical phenomena and important applications in both classical and quantum regimes appeal as they have a strong optomechanical nonlinearity, which essentially depends on the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength. Thus, engineering the optomechanical interactions and improving the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength become very important subjects. In this article, we first review several mechanisms, theoretically proposed for enhancing optomechanical coupling. Then, we review the experimental progresses on enhancing optomechanical coupling by optimizing its structure and fabrication process. Finally, we review how to use novel structures and materials to enhance the optomechanical coupling strength. The manipulations of the photons and phonons at the level of strong optomechanical coupling are also summarized.

Abstract:Lasers differ from other light sources in that they are coherent, and their coherence makes them indispensable to both fundamental research and practical application. In optomechanical cavities, photon and phonon lasing is facilitated by the ability of photons and phonons to interact intensively and excite one another coherently. The lasing linewidths of both phonons and photons are critical for practical application. This study investigates the lasing linewidths of photons and phonons from the underlying dynamics in an optomechanical cavity. We find that the linewidths can be accounted for by two distinct physical mechanisms in two regimes, namely the normal regime and the reversed regime, where the intrinsic optical decay rate is either larger or smaller than the intrinsic mechanical decay rate. In the normal regime, an ultra-narrow spectral linewidth of 5.4 kHz for phonon lasing at 6.22 GHz can be achieved regardless of the linewidth of the pump light, while these results are counterintuitively unattainable for photon lasing in the reversed regime. These results pave the way towards harnessing the coherence of both photons and phonons in silicon photonic devices and reshaping their spectra, potentially opening up new technologies in sensing, metrology, spectroscopy, and signal processing, as well as in applications requiring sources that offer an ultra-high degree of coherence.

Abstract:Mechanical degrees of freedom, which have often been overlooked in various quantum systems, have been studied for applications ranging from quantum information processing to sensing. Here, we develop a hybrid platform consisting of a magnomechanical cavity and an optomechanical cavity, which are coherently coupled by the straightway physical contact. The phonons in the system can be manipulated either with the magnetostrictive interaction or optically through the radiation pressure. Together with mechanical state preparation and sensitive readout, we demonstrate the microwave-to-optical conversion with an ultrawide tuning range up to 3 GHz. In addition, we observe a mechanical motion interference effect, in which the optically driven mechanical motion is canceled by the microwave-driven coherent motion. Manipulating mechanical oscillators with equal facility through both magnonic and photonic channels enables new architectures for signal transduction between the optical, microwave, mechanical, and magnetic fields. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.243601 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional optomechanical lattice where each site is strongly driven by a control laser to enhance the basic optomechanical interaction. We then study the propagation of photons injected by an additional probe laser beam; this is the lattice-generalization of the well-known optomechanically-induced transparency (OMIT) effect in a single optomechanical cavity. We find an interesting interplay between OMIT-type physics and geometric, Fabry-Perot type resonances. In particular, phonon-like polaritons can give rise to high-amplitude transmission resonances which are much narrower than the scale set by internal photon losses. We also find that the local photon density of states in the lattice exhibits OMIT-style interference features. It is thus far richer than would be expected by just looking at the band structure of the dissipation-free coherent system.

Abstract:Entanglement and quantum squeezing have wide applications in quantum technologies due to their non-classical characteristics. Here we study entanglement and quantum squeezing in an open spin-optomechanical system, in which a Rabi model (a spin coupled to the mechanical oscillator) is coupled to an ancillary cavity field via a quadratic optomechanical coupling. We find that their performances can be significantly modulated via the photon of the ancillary cavity, which comes from photon-dependent spin-oscillator coupling and detuning. Specifically, a fully switchable spin-oscillator entanglement can be achieved, meanwhile a strong mechanical squeezing is also realized. Moreover, we study the environment-induced decoherence and dissipation, and find that they can be mitigated by increasing the number of photons. This work provides an effective way to manipulate entanglement and quantum squeezing and to suppress decoherence in the cavity quantum electrodynamics with a quadratic optomechanics.

Abstract:The strong localized field in micro-nano photonic structures brings new opportunities for the study of the light-matter interaction. By designing optical modes in these structures, photons and excitons in micro-nanostructures can exchange energy reversibly or irreversibly. In this paper, a series of our recent studies on the strong and weak photon-emitter coupling in micro-nano structures especially in plasmonic and their coupled structures are reviewed, such as the principle of efficient, tunable and directional single photon emission, and engineering the electromagnetic vacuum for enhancing the coupling between photon and exciton. These results provide new physical contents for the light-matter interactions on micro and nanoscale, and have potential applications in the on-chip quantum information process and the construction of scalable quantum networks.
Ponderomotive light squeezing with atomic cavity optomechanics

Abstract:Accessing distinctly quantum aspects of the interaction between light and the position of a mechanical object has been an outstanding challenge to cavity-optomechanical systems. Only cold-atom implementations of cavity optomechanics have indicated effects of the quantum fluctuations in the optical radiation pressure force. Here we use such a system, in which quantum photon-number fluctuations significantly drive the center of mass of an atomic ensemble inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. We show that the optomechanical response both amplifies and ponderomotively squeezes the quantum light field. We also demonstrate that classical optical fluctuations can be attenuated by 26 dB or amplified by 20 dB with a weak input pump power of < 40 pW, and characterize the optomechanical amplifier's frequency-dependent gain and phase response in both the amplitude and phase-modulation quadratures.

Abstract:Optical bistability is theoretically analyzed in a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of an optical cavity including a Kerr medium and an optomechanical cavity coupled by direct tunnel coupling. The dynamics of the system is described by Heisenberg–Langevin equations. It is numerically shown that there is a critical value of the Kerr coefficient to observe the bistability of the intracavity intensity for a given coupling rate, and the changing of the Kerr coefficient will lead to the changing of the critical point to observe the bistability as well. In addition, the first critical value to observe bistability becomes larger with the increasing coupling rate between the two cavities. It is also demonstrated that the pump beam required to realize the bistable behavior in the blue sideband regime is significantly smaller than that in the red sideband regime. And the mean intracavity photon number is relatively larger in the red sideband case than that in the blue sideband case. It is remarkable to observe that the mean intracavity photon numbers in both cavities are much lower than that in ordinary situations.

Abstract:Engineering strong single-photon optomechanical couplings is crucial for optomechanical systems. Here, we propose a hybrid quantum system consisting of a nanobeam (phonons) coupled to a spin ensemble and a cavity (photons) to overcome it. Utilizing the critical property of the lower-branch polariton (LBP) formed by the ensemble-phonon interaction, the LBP-cavity coupling can be greatly enhanced by three orders magnitude of the original one, while the upper-branch polariton (UBP)-cavity coupling is fully suppressed. Our proposal breaks through the condition of the coupling strength less than the critical value in previous schemes using two harmonic oscillators. Also, strong Kerr effect can be induced in our proposal. This shows our proposed approach can be used to study quantum nonlinear and nonclassical effects in weakly coupled optomechanical systems. Abstract:We study photon blockade and anti-bunching in the cavity of an optomechanical system in which the mechanical resonator is coupled to a two-level system (TLS). In particular, we analyze the effects of the coupling strength (to the mechanical mode), transition frequency, and decay rate of TLS on the photon blockade. The statistical properties of the cavity field are affected by the TLS, because the TLS changes the energy-level structure of the optomechanical system via dressed states formed by the TLS and the mechanical resonator. We find that the photon blockade and tunneling can be significantly changed by the transition frequency of the TLS and the coupling strength between the TLS and the mechanical resonator. Therefore, our study provides a method to tune the photon blockade and tunneling using a controllable TLS.

Abstract:In an optomechanical system, we experimentally engineer the optical density of state to reduce or broaden the effective linewidth of the optical mode by introducing an ancillary mechanical mode, which has a large decay rate, i.e., stimulated backward Brillouin scattering. Based on this dissipation engineering, we could engineer the optical mode linewidth by one order of magnitude. In addition, we can either enhance or suppress the optomechanical cooling and amplification of the target mechanical oscillations. Our scheme demonstrates the cascaded photon-phonon coupling to control the mechanical interactions, and also presents a novel approach for engineering coherent light-matter interaction in hybrid systems, which consist of different types of nonlinear interactions and multiple modes, and promote the performance of quantum devices. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.163604 © 2021 American Physical Society
