Abstract:Fast, environmentally friendly synthesis of blue-luminescent carbon quantum dots (C-dots) at ambient conditions (i.e., room temperature and atmospheric pressure) is presented. The as synthesized C-dots are of a relatively size uniform distribution with a peak at approximately 2.4 nm. The photoluminescence show that the emission peak of C-dots shifts from 443 nm to more than 456 nm as the excitation sources is varied from 360-410 nm. The majority of C-dots produced are predominantly graphitic in nature based on the Raman spectroscopy. The plasma-assisted non-equilibrium reactive chemistry induces chemical reactions and accelerates the C-dot formation process.

Abstract:Sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly biomass waste can be exploited for large-scale production of carbon nanomaterials. Here, alkali lignin was employed as a precursor to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with bright green fluorescence through a simple one-pot route. The prepared CQDs had a size of 1.5-3.5 nm, were water-dispersible, and showed wonderful biocompatibility, in addition to their excellent photoluminescence and electrocatalysis properties. These high-quality CQDs could be used in a wide range of applications such as metal-ion detection, cell imaging, and electrocatalysis. The wide range of biomass lignin feedstocks provide a green, low-cost, and viable strategy for producing high-quality fluorescent CQDs and enable the conversion of biomass waste into high-value products that promote sustainable development of the economy and human society.

Abstract:We report a rational strategy for scalable production of highly fluorescent CQDs in high yields (50-92%) based on controlled molecule fusion of activated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in environmentally friendly polar solvents. By simply varying the composition of reaction solvents, their bandgaps were systematically manipulated, enabling the adjustment of fluorescent emissions from blue to red. Similar to conventional organic-soluble quantum dots but distinct from extensively reported water-soluble CQDs, the CQDs engineered in polar solvents are highly soluble in organic solvents and possess main features of intrinsic bandgap transitions, including overlapping of absorption and excitation spectra, excitation-independence fluorescence, the inversely proportional relationship of the bandgaps with fluorescence peak wavelength, and mono-exponential fluorescence decay. What's more, the red-fluorescent CQDs were encapsulated by liposomes, providing good biocompatibility and excellent in vitro and in vivo imaging capabilities. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:Here we introduce a simple, superfast, and scalable strategy that obtains graphene quantum dots (GQDs) within 3 min under microwave irradiation (MA-GQDs). The MA-GQDs exhibit excellent fluorescence quantum yields up to 35% in the optimum reaction condition. The MA-GQDs with single-crystalline and few-layer structure can reach the visible region with the longest absorption wavelength at 700 nm. Moreover, these ultrabright-fluorescence and stable MAGQDs as a phosphor and fluorescence probe could be efficiently applied in white light-emitting diodes and cell imaging fields. The developed pathway to GQDs can provide unambiguous and remarkable insights into the design of high-fluorescence and few-defect GQDs, and expedite the applications of GQDs.

Abstract:The liquid-phase method is the most commonly utilized strategy for synthesizing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs). However, the liquid-phase synthesis of CQDs faces challenges such as low yield, complex purification, and the use of toxic solvents, which limit large-scale production and practical applications. In this study, fluorescent CQDs with a high product yield of 78% were synthesized using glucose as a carbon source through a green and facile one-step solid-phase approach, without solvents or post-treatment. A systematic study of the structure and fluorescence properties of the synthesized CQDs was conducted using various characterization techniques. The results indicated that the mean size of obtained CQDs was 4.1 nm, and that their surface had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in favorable water solubility. The synthesized CQDs exhibited excitation-dependent fluorescence, with optimal excitation and emission wavelengths at 358 and 455 nm, respectively. Additionally, the CQDs solution showed bright blue fluorescence under 365 nm UV light, with a quantum yield of 6.21% and a fluorescence lifetime of 3.02 ns. This study offers valuable insights into the green and efficient synthesis of fluorescent CQDs powder.

Abstract:We present a facile approach, without the need for external heating and any additional energy input, to produce fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) inexpensively and on a large scale. Fluorescence emission wavelengths from the obtained CDs shift gradually from 630 to 400 nm with reduction in their concentration in solution. This work offers a novel avenue for tuning band gaps in CDs and endowing them with potential for various applications.

Abstract:Conventional synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) mostly involves a hydrothermal or solvent-thermal reaction which needs relatively high temperature and pressure. In this work, ionic liquid is used to assist in fast synthesizing CDs with an ultrahigh photoluminescent quantum yield (98.5%) by heating at a low temperature (≤100 °C) and at atmospheric pressure. In addition, through this approach, tunable multicolor emissive CDs can be successfully achieved and used for preparing high-performance white light-emitting diodes. Theoretical computation proves that the activity of synthesis reaction can be significantly enhanced by ionic liquids. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the size and graphite nitrogen ratios of CDs have an effect on bandgap reduction, resulting in a redshift of the emission, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. This simple and promising approach for fast synthesis of tunable emissive CDs using ionic liquid affords the facilitation of CDs-based luminescent materials for fast manufacturing of functional devices.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.

Abstract:A simple yet consequential modification was made to the popular carbonization processing of citric acid polyethylenimine precursor mixtures to produce carbon dots (CDots). The modification was primarily on pushing the carbonization processing a little harder at a higher temperature, such as the hydrothermal processing condition of around 330 degrees C for 6 h. The CDots thus produced are comparable in spectroscopic and other properties to those obtained in other more controlled syntheses including the deliberate chemical functionalization of pre-processed and selected small carbon nanoparticles, demonstrating the consistency in CDots and reaffirming their general definition as carbon nanoparticles with surface passivation by organic or other species. Equally significant is the finding that the modified processing of citric acid - polyethylenimine precursor mixtures could yield CDots of record-setting fluorescence performance, approaching the upper limit of being quantitatively fluorescent. Thus, the reported work serves as a demonstration on not only the need in selecting the right processing conditions and its associated opportunities in one-pot syntheses of CDots, but also the feasibility in pursuing the preparation of quantitatively fluorescent CDots, which represents an important milestone in the development and understanding of these fluorescent carbon nanomaterials. Abstract:Photoluminescent carbon and/or silicon-based nanodots have attracted ever increasing interest. Accordingly, a myriad of synthetic methodologies have been developed to fabricate them, which unfortunately, however, frequently involve relatively tedious steps, such as initial surface passivation and subsequent functionalization. Herein, we describe a green and sustainable synthetic strategy to combine these procedures into one step and to produce highly luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs), which can also be easily fabricated into flexible thin films with intense luminescence for future roll-to-roll manufacturing of optoelectronic devices. The as-synthesized CQDs exhibited enhanced cellular permeability and low or even noncytotoxicity for cellular applications, as corroborated by confocal fluorescence imaging of HeLa cells as well as cell viability measurements. Most strikingly, zebrafish were directly fed with CQDs for in vivo imaging, and mortality and morphologic analysis indicated ingestion of the CQDs posed no harm to the living organisms. Hence, the multifunctional CQDs potentially provide a rich pool of tools for optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Abstract:As a single-element nanomaterial, sulfur nanodots are emerging as a kind of heavy-metal-free nanomaterials which are believed to excel over traditional undesirable compound semiconductor nanocrystals in practical applications. Attaining their potential shall rest on the facile fabrication of high quality samples. Yet, so far the reported fabrication techniques for fluorescent sulfur nanodots have been time-consuming and cost-ineffective. Instead, we employed a strategy of hydrothermal reaction to synthesize sulfur nanodots, which reduces the synthesis time remarkably from generally required 125 h to 4 h. As-synthesized sulfur nanodots (without any post-treatment) manifest good monodispersity and a reasonable photoluminescence quantum yield up to 4.02%. The fission-aggregation mechanism has been proposed to account for the reaction dynamics in the formation of sulfur nanodots. Optical spectroscopic analysis indicates the existence of tail states in the electronic structures of sulfur nanodots, and the photoluminescence properties are governed by both the core and surface states of the sulfur nanodots, which may provide usable hints for manipulating and harnessing the luminescence properties. Besides the insight into both the synthesis and emission mechanism of luminescent sulfur nanodots, our findings pave the way to the bio-related expedite exploitation of these materials.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (C-dots) with average size of 9 nm were synthesized from an aqueous solution of raw cashew gum (RCG) using a novel and fast microwave-assisted technique which involves two steps. In the first step (partial depolymerization in solution) some monomer units are formed through the autohydrolysis of CG and a small amount of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural can be obtained. The second step involves polycondensation/polymerization to give rise to a polyfuranic structure followed by aromatization/carbonization and nuclear burst. At the end of the process a composite of partially depolymerized CG and C-dot was formed. A mechanism involved in microwave-assisted two-steps synthesis was suggested. Although no passivation reagent was used, an intensely blue photoluminescent material in UV light was obtained. C-dot was characterized by spectroscopy in the medium infrared, thermal analysis, gel permeation chromatography, transmission electron microscopy, zeta potential, and photoluminescence.

Abstract:Compared with traditional semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and organic dyes, photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) are superior because of their high aqueous solubility, robust chemical inertness, facile functionalization, high resistance to photobleaching, low toxicity and good biocompatibility. Herein, a green, large-scale and high-output heterogeneous synthesis of N-doped CDs was developed by reacting calcium citrate and urea under microwave irradiation without the use of any capping agents. The obtained N-doped CDs with a uniform size distribution exhibit good aqueous solubility and yellowish-green fluorescence in the solid and aqueous states. These unique luminescence properties of N-doped CDs inspire new thoughts for applications as fluorescent powders, fluorescent inks, the growth of fluorescent bean sprouts, and fingerprint detection tools.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced luminescence quenching of carbon dots (CDots) is the main obstacle for their applications in the solid state. Herein, we report a method to produce strongly luminescent CDots@silica composite gels with highly concentrated emitting centers, where the gelation of tetraethyl orthosilicate is initiated by the surface hydroxyl groups of CDots. The key feature of this approach is to prevent both the collision between high concentrated CDots in gelating solution and their aggregation upon drying. The resultant CDots@silica composite xerogel exhibits both high CDots loading fraction (19.2 wt %) and photoluminescence quantum yields (>40%).
