Abstract:Multiple-color emissive carbon dots (C-dots) are getting increasing attention in various fields. Herein, we report a facile solvothermal method for the synthesis of multiple-color emissive C-dots towards white-light emission. Under single ultraviolet-light excitation, three C-dots emit a well-controllable fluorescence emission wavelength at 440 nm, 500 nm and 610 nm by using different three amines (either ammonium hydroxide, ethylenediamine or p-phenylenediamine, respectively) and pyromellitic dianhydride as molecular precursors while another three C-dots emit a well-controllable fluorescence emission wavelength at 500 nm, 550 nm and 585 nm by using same three amines and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride as molecular precursors. The maximum fluorescence wavelength of these C-dots is red-shifted by changing three different amines molecular precursor from ammonium hydroxide, ethylenediamine, to p-phenylenediamine. Furthermore, these C-dots have shown promising applications in the fields of white-light-emitting diodes devices and color printing.

Abstract:A new class of white luminescent materials, white-light-emitting graphene quantum dots (WGQDs), have attracted increasing attention because of their unique features and potential applications. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel WGQDs via a solvothermal molecular fusion strategy. The modulation of chlorine doping amount and reaction temperature gives the WGQDs a single-crystalline structure and bright white fluorescence properties. In particular, the WGQDs also exhibit novel and robust white phosphorescence performance for the first time. An optimum fluorescence quantum yield of WGQDs is 34%, which exceeds the majority of reported WGQDs and other white luminescent materials. The WGQDs display broad-spectrum absorption within almost the entire visible light region, broad full width at half maximum and extend their phosphorescence emission to the entire white long-wavelength region. This unique dual-mode optical characteristic of the WGQDs originates from the synergistic effect of low-defect and high chlorine-doping in WGQDs and enlarges their applications in white light emission devices, cell nuclei imaging, and information encryption. Our finding provides us an opportunity to design and construct more advanced multifunctional white luminescent materials based on metal-free carbon nanomaterials.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:We demonstrate the first white light-emitting device originating from single carbon dot components. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.083% at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2) with a color-rendering index of 82 is realized, indicating that carbon dots have great potential to be an alternative phosphor for fabricating white light electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with white fluorescence are synthesized by a microwave‐assisted hydrothermal method using graphite as the precursor. A solution‐processed white‐light‐emitting diode (WLED) is fabricated using the as‐prepared white fluorescent GQDs (white‐light‐emitting graphene quantum dots, WGQDs) doped 4,4‐bis(carbazol‐9‐yl)biphenyl as the emissive layer. White‐light emission is obtained from the WLED with 10 wt% doping concentration of WGQDs, which shows a luminance of 200 cd m−2 at the applied voltage of 11–14 V. Importantly, an external quantum efficiency of 0.2% is achieved, which is the highest among all the reported WLED based on GQDs or carbon dots. The results demonstrate that WGQDs as a novel phosphor may open up a new avenue to develop the environmentally friendly WLEDs for practical application in solid‐state lighting.

Abstract:A novel white light-emitting diode based on a large Stokes shift (~200 nm) and using pure green light-emitting CdSeS quantum dots (QDs) with an Ag/ZnSnO/QDs/spiro-TPD/ITO structure has been fabricated in which ZnSnO and spiro-TPD are served as the electron and hole transport layer, respectively. The large Stokes shift of the CdSeS QDs excludes potentially Förster resonance energy transfer process, which allows spiro-TPD to act as both an emitter and hole transport layer. The devices exhibit a wide EL spectrum consisting of three components: blue emission from spiro-TPD, green emission from QD band–band recombination, and red emission from QD surface-state recombination. We further found that as the intensity ratios among these three components vary with bias the color of the QD light-emitting diodes is tunable. The device displays a good white light-emitting characteristic with CIE coordinates of (0.281, 0.384) at an appropriate bias.

Abstract:Using tartaric acid and triammonium citrate as environmentally friendly precursor reactants, multicolor fluorescent carbon dots with adjustable emission wavelength and high quantum yield were successfully synthesized via one-step solvothermal method by only changing the reaction solvent. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the carbon dots were investigated in detail. Characterization results showed that the as-synthesized carbon dots have good dispersibility, rich surface functional groups and high quantum yield (all over 40%). A high-quality white LED with CIE color coordinate (0.34, 0.35) was successfully fabricated using the prepared multicolor carbon dots as the light conversion material. The correlated color temperature was 5336 K, and the color rendering index was up to 83.1. The prepared LED emitted warm white light and was suitable for indoor lighting. It is of great significance to prepare multicolor carbon dots with high quantum yield by single-factor control, and the prepared multicolor carbon dots have potential and broad application prospects in the field of white LED.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become an excellent candidate for light-converting phosphors. However, it is a challenge to develop white emission CQDs and overcome the agglomeration in the process of solid-state CQDs. Here, white fluorescence CQDs with graphite core structure were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method from 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and hydrochloric acid. The photoluminescence spectra and surface structure characterization along with UV-Vis absorption spectrum, photoluminescence excitation, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra together reveal the luminescence of CQDs stems from carbon-oxygen-related surface fluorophores. The principle of solvent similarity compatibility is an effective thought to choose isolating matrix material for the sake of overcoming the agglomeration of CQDs in the process of forming solid film. Solid-state white light emitting device (WLED) was fabricated using the CQDs embedded in polymethyl methacrylate matrix as a single white-light converter excited by a 365 nm UV-LED chip. The fabricated WLED based on CQDs is cold white light source with CIE coordinates (0.3122, 0.3429) and with CCT of 6428 K.

Facile Way to Fabricate High Quality White LED with Yellow Graphene Quantum Dots

Abstract:Because of the fabulous fluorescence characteristics, semiconductor quantum dots have attracted a lot attention since the first reported. Meanwhile, the applications of quantum dots have been limited by its own toxicity. The appearance of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) breaks the awkward situation. GQDs can also realize from ultraviolet to near infrared full visible light broad band emitting. The lower cost, better biocompatibility and stability than semiconductor quantum dots make it possible to replace inorganic quantum dots for chemical sensing, biomarkers, and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, the synthesis of doped GQDs is mainly studied. The nitrogen-chlorine doped GQDs were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The as prepared GQDs were characterized by TEM, XPS, FTIR, PL and other characterization methods. In this study, by utilizing common industrialized technology to fabricate GQDs white LED could achieve large-scale production. The rendering index of as prepared white GQDs LED was 85.4. It is much higher than YAG phosphor white LED. And the chromaticity coordinates of GQDs LED located at (0.34, 0.36). The correlated color temperature of 5075K was very consistent with indoor lighting scene. That means this GQDs white LED has great application prospects in the field of high-end lighting.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising to be applied in light-emitting, chemosensing, and other cutting-edge domains. Herein, we successfully fabricate high-quality full-color CQDs under unprecedentedly low temperature and pressure (85°C, 1.88 bar). Stable and narrow fluorescent emissions ranging from blue to green and red light were realized by simple amine engineering, which were further mixed into white-light CQDs with the absolute photoluminescent quantum yield reaching 19.2%. The average mass yield of the CQDs reached 69.0%. The optical performances demonstrated that the CQDs possessed uniform luminescent centers and dominant radiative decay channels. Component analysis further suggested that dehydrated condensation between carboxyl and amine groups directed the growth of the CQDs. By utilizing the CQDs, full-color light-emitting diodes and logic gate sensors were developed. This study paves an important step for promoting the application of CQDs by providing an energy-efficient, safe, and productive synthetic strategy.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has shown promising potentials for quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), which might be an effective alternative of the mostly used Cd(Se,S)/Zn(S,Se) emitting layers and can achieve both low toxicity and high stability, meeting the goal of sustainable development. Herein, we for the first report a white electroluminescent QLED device with blue and orange dual-color emissions, which were attributed to the cs*-LP, n*- n, and n*-LP transitions, respectively, from a single-compound g-C3N4 quantum dots (QDs) by synthesizing the precursor at 0.8 Mpa high-pressure N2. By selectively exciting the 8 and n bonds with X-ray, the luminescence mechanism was approved with the synchrotron radiation techniques of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and the X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL).The chromaticity coordinate changes from cayan color space with CIE (0.2034, 0.1939) to white color space with CIE (0.3009, 0.2697) as pressure increases from 0.06 to 0.8 Mpa, with the increased overlap of the 8* and n* orbital upon the contraction of crystal lattice. The breakthrough achieved in this work will promisingly promote the development of future white light sources as thin as paper for human home and office lighting by using direct current-driven electroluminescence of QDs, instead of photoluminescence of phosphors.

Abstract:In this work, we have reported on the facile synthesis of white light-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQD) from corncob by hydrothermal method. This CQD has a broad emission from 380 nm to 650 nm with high photoluminescence intensity even after three months of shelf-life and stable at variable pH conditions. The presence of Si and N impurities in the biomass gives a greater advantage in producing white light emission with high quantum yield (54%) and enhanced lifetime at ambient conditions. The CQD is highly sensitive towards DNA, paracetamol, Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ fluorescence sensing and signifies its application as a multi-modal fluorescence sensor. The results of optical sensitivity calculated from the linear range of 1-10 ng/mL, 0.10-0.30 mg/mL, 2.5446 ng/mL, 0.0694 mg/mL, 0.3103-1.5515 μM/mL, 0.4299-4.7293 μM/mL, 1.3010 μM/mL and 0.05-2.5 μM/mL. The limit of detection is 2.5446 ng/mL, 0.0694 mg/mL, 0.8641 μM/mL, 1.2454 μM/mL, 1.3010 μM/m, 0.8550 μM/mL and 2.8562 μM/mL, respectively. And also, the relative standard deviation values of 2.30%, 4.46%, 1.79%, 1.84%, 0.26%, 1.23% and 0.35% are evidences its possibility of development towards potential optical sensor applications. Flexible white light-emitting sheets were fabricated from the CQD, illuminates uniform brightness, and has good color reproducibility and higher stability under various UV light excitation.

Benefiting from the white light-emitting solid-state films, single-component white light-emitting diodes were fabricated with an average color rendering index value (Ra) of 80.0, luminous efficiency of 10.2 lm W-1, and good working stability, thus indicating a promising potential for practical lighting applications.

Abstract:In recent years, carbon dots have attracted more and more attention due to their unique advantages, but there has been a great controversy about the study of their mechanism. A clear mechanism is of great importance for the structural design of carbon dots. To investigate the photoluminescence mechanism of carbon dots, full-color carbon dots with multiple emission centers were successfully prepared by using citric acid and water-soluble aniline blue. It is shown that the red shift of emission wavelength is attributed to the synergistic effect of N and O-related surface functional groups and quantum size. The successful preparation of cold white light diodes from mixed trichromatic carbon dots indicates that this type of carbon dot has important applications in light-emitting devices.
