Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become an excellent candidate for light-converting phosphors. However, it is a challenge to develop white emission CQDs and overcome the agglomeration in the process of solid-state CQDs. Here, white fluorescence CQDs with graphite core structure were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method from 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and hydrochloric acid. The photoluminescence spectra and surface structure characterization along with UV-Vis absorption spectrum, photoluminescence excitation, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra together reveal the luminescence of CQDs stems from carbon-oxygen-related surface fluorophores. The principle of solvent similarity compatibility is an effective thought to choose isolating matrix material for the sake of overcoming the agglomeration of CQDs in the process of forming solid film. Solid-state white light emitting device (WLED) was fabricated using the CQDs embedded in polymethyl methacrylate matrix as a single white-light converter excited by a 365 nm UV-LED chip. The fabricated WLED based on CQDs is cold white light source with CIE coordinates (0.3122, 0.3429) and with CCT of 6428 K.

Abstract:As an important complement to traditional quantum dots (QDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs) possess the characteristics of low toxicity, easy preparation, low cost, and good biocompatibility. Here, we have successfully prepared blue, yellow-green, yellow and red emitting CQDs by a one-step solvothermal method using o-phenylenediamine as a precursor and only water and ethanol as solvents. It is noted that the diameter of CQDs satisfies the quantum size effect, which is also corroborated by the reduced graphitization. The decay processes of CQDs obey double exponential fit. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conclusively determines that the red-shift from yellow-green to red CQDs is associated with the carbon-/oxygen-related surface defects except for the quantum size effect. Intriguingly, multi-color CQDs-based LEDs devices using thermoset epoxy resins have been successfully fabricated, which illustrates the great potential of CQDs for future applications in the luminescence field due to their superior performance and environmentally friendly fabrication.

Abstract:Sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly biomass waste can be exploited for large-scale production of carbon nanomaterials. Here, alkali lignin was employed as a precursor to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with bright green fluorescence through a simple one-pot route. The prepared CQDs had a size of 1.5-3.5 nm, were water-dispersible, and showed wonderful biocompatibility, in addition to their excellent photoluminescence and electrocatalysis properties. These high-quality CQDs could be used in a wide range of applications such as metal-ion detection, cell imaging, and electrocatalysis. The wide range of biomass lignin feedstocks provide a green, low-cost, and viable strategy for producing high-quality fluorescent CQDs and enable the conversion of biomass waste into high-value products that promote sustainable development of the economy and human society.

Abstract:Multicolor carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are synthesized by a novel reagent engineering strategy. The aggregation‐caused quenching phenomenon of CQDs is suppressed by utilizing the hydrogen‐bonding network of cellulose nanofibrils. Fast thin‐film encapsulation (≈3 min) of high heat dissipation, high‐performance multicolor light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) is achieved based on UV‐cured acrylic resin, and high‐performance white LEDs are obtained. Light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in lighting and display applications. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), which have high biocompatibility, high resistance to photobleaching, and full‐spectrum luminescence, have inherent advantages as fluorescent materials for LED devices. Herein, multicolor CQDs are prepared by a new reagent engineering strategy due to the difference of effective conjugate length and the surface electron‐withdrawing groups of CQDs. White CQDs are realized by mixing blue, green, and red CQDs proportionally. Then, the aggregation‐caused quenching phenomenon of CQDs is suppressed through the hydrogen‐bonding network of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Multicolor fluorescent films are prepared from CQDs and CNFs by simple mixing and casting methods. Finally, thin‐film encapsulation based on the photosensitive resin ABPE‐10 coating can be realized and rapidly assembles into fluorescent films with different light‐emitting colors into LED devices, leading to have superior thermal performance compared with conventional LEDs. White LEDs have excellent white‐light illumination performance, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage color coordinates of (0.33, 0.37), a correlated color temperature of 5688 K, and a color rendering index of 86. This strategy provides a convenient and scalable pathway for low‐cost, environmentally friendly, and high‐performance CQDs‐based LEDs.
Preparation of multicolor carbon quantum dots by hydrothermal method and their functionalization applications

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become a popular research topic because of their many unique virtues, especially the significance of tunable photoluminescence properties. However, the synthesis of multicolor CQDs is still at an exploratory stage, and there are many dilemmas that have not yet been well resolved, such as long-wavelength emission and solid-state luminescence. Here, we selected suitable carbon and dopant sources as precursors for the synthesis of CQDs through the rational design of the experiments in an aqueous system, and the as-prepared CQDs possessed blue, green, yellow and red emissions, with optimal emissions of approximately 475 nm, 530 nm, 580 nm, and 645 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding PLQYs were 30.13 %, 36.84 %, 39.16 % and 21.36 %, respectively. It was found that the redshift of the emission wavelengths can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the increase in the sp 2 conjugate size and the surface states. To conquer the aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) of CQDs and realize the solid-state luminescence of CQDs, we successfully prepared solid-state fluorescent films and solid-state phosphors. Finally, multicolor CQDs were successfully applied to prepare monochromatic and white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). The adopted green synthesis technology can provide a good technical support for the future development of CQDs synthesis.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising to be applied in light-emitting, chemosensing, and other cutting-edge domains. Herein, we successfully fabricate high-quality full-color CQDs under unprecedentedly low temperature and pressure (85°C, 1.88 bar). Stable and narrow fluorescent emissions ranging from blue to green and red light were realized by simple amine engineering, which were further mixed into white-light CQDs with the absolute photoluminescent quantum yield reaching 19.2%. The average mass yield of the CQDs reached 69.0%. The optical performances demonstrated that the CQDs possessed uniform luminescent centers and dominant radiative decay channels. Component analysis further suggested that dehydrated condensation between carboxyl and amine groups directed the growth of the CQDs. By utilizing the CQDs, full-color light-emitting diodes and logic gate sensors were developed. This study paves an important step for promoting the application of CQDs by providing an energy-efficient, safe, and productive synthetic strategy.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:AbstractGraphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a nonmetallic photocatalyst, has gained considerable attention for its cost‐effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature in catalyzing solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable products. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction with CN remains low, accompanied by challenges in achieving desirable product selectivity. To address these limitations, a two‐step hydrothermal‐calcination tandem synthesis strategy is presented, introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into CN and forming ultra‐thin CQD/CN nanosheets. The integration of CQDs induces a distinct work function with CN, creating a robust interface electric field after the combination. This electric field facilitates the accumulation of photoelectrons in the CQDs region, providing an abundant source of reduced electrons for the photocatalytic process. Remarkably, the CQD/CN nanosheets exhibit an average CO yield of 120 µmol g−1, showcasing an outstanding CO selectivity of 92.8%. The discovery in the work not only presents an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance photocatalysts grounded in non‐metallic CN materials employing CQDs but also opens new avenues for versatile application prospects in environmental protection and sustainable cleaning energy.
Facile Synthesis of N-rich Carbon Quantum Dots from Porphyrins As Efficient Probes for Bioimaging and Biosensing in Living Cells.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.
A Solvent-Engineered Molecule Fusion Strategy for Rational Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots with Multicolor Bandgap Fluorescence

Abstract:We report a rational strategy for scalable production of highly fluorescent CQDs in high yields (50-92%) based on controlled molecule fusion of activated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in environmentally friendly polar solvents. By simply varying the composition of reaction solvents, their bandgaps were systematically manipulated, enabling the adjustment of fluorescent emissions from blue to red. Similar to conventional organic-soluble quantum dots but distinct from extensively reported water-soluble CQDs, the CQDs engineered in polar solvents are highly soluble in organic solvents and possess main features of intrinsic bandgap transitions, including overlapping of absorption and excitation spectra, excitation-independence fluorescence, the inversely proportional relationship of the bandgaps with fluorescence peak wavelength, and mono-exponential fluorescence decay. What's more, the red-fluorescent CQDs were encapsulated by liposomes, providing good biocompatibility and excellent in vitro and in vivo imaging capabilities. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Efficient White Electrochemiluminescent Emission From Carbon Quantum Dot Films

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were manufactured from citric acid and urea in a gram-scale synthesis with a controlled size range between 1. 5 and 23.8 nm. The size control was realized by varying volume of the precursor solution in a hydrothermal synthesis method. The prepared CQDs were investigated using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) spectroscopy at interfaces of their electrode films and electrolyte solution containing coreactants rather than conventional optoelectronic tests, providing an in-depth analysis of light-emission mechanisms of the so-called half-cells. ECL from the CQD films with TPrA and K2S2O8 as coreactants provided information on the stability of the CQD radicals in the films. It was discovered that CQD•- has a powerful electron donating nature to sulfate radical to generate ECL at a relative efficiency of 96% to the Ru(bpy)3Cl2/K2S2O8 coreactant system, indicating a strong performance in light emitting applications. The smaller the CQD particle sizes, the higher the ECL efficiency of the film interface, most likely due to the increased presence of surface states per mass of CQDs. Spooling ECL spectroscopy of the system revealed a potential-dependent light emission starting from a deep red color to blue-shifted intensity maximum, cool bright white emission with a correlated color temperature of 3,200 K. This color temperature is appropriate for most indoor lighting applications. The above ECL results provide information on the performance of CQD light emitters in films, permitting preliminary screening for light emitting candidates in optoelectronic applications. This screening has revealed CQD films as a powerful and cost-effective light emitting layer toward lighting devices for indoor applications.

Abstract:In this work, we have reported on the facile synthesis of white light-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQD) from corncob by hydrothermal method. This CQD has a broad emission from 380 nm to 650 nm with high photoluminescence intensity even after three months of shelf-life and stable at variable pH conditions. The presence of Si and N impurities in the biomass gives a greater advantage in producing white light emission with high quantum yield (54%) and enhanced lifetime at ambient conditions. The CQD is highly sensitive towards DNA, paracetamol, Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ fluorescence sensing and signifies its application as a multi-modal fluorescence sensor. The results of optical sensitivity calculated from the linear range of 1-10 ng/mL, 0.10-0.30 mg/mL, 2.5446 ng/mL, 0.0694 mg/mL, 0.3103-1.5515 μM/mL, 0.4299-4.7293 μM/mL, 1.3010 μM/mL and 0.05-2.5 μM/mL. The limit of detection is 2.5446 ng/mL, 0.0694 mg/mL, 0.8641 μM/mL, 1.2454 μM/mL, 1.3010 μM/m, 0.8550 μM/mL and 2.8562 μM/mL, respectively. And also, the relative standard deviation values of 2.30%, 4.46%, 1.79%, 1.84%, 0.26%, 1.23% and 0.35% are evidences its possibility of development towards potential optical sensor applications. Flexible white light-emitting sheets were fabricated from the CQD, illuminates uniform brightness, and has good color reproducibility and higher stability under various UV light excitation.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with multi-color emission are synthesized through hydrothermal method by varying the ratio of citric acid (CA) and urea, the solvent (water, ethyl alcohol, and dimethylformamide), the hydrothermal temperature, and reaction time. The CQDs emit bright fluorescence which can be gradually tuned from blue to red continuously, almost covering the whole visible spectrum. The emission peaks of the CQDs shift from 450 nm to 650 nm with the surface groups and structures changing. Importantly, all solid state CQDs@SiO2 nanophosphors are successfully synthesized by reversed-phase micromulsion method. Based on these solid state phosphors, multi-color CQDs@SiO2 phosphors-based light-emitting diodes (LED) and white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a Commission Internationale de L' Eclairage (CIE) value of (0.3497, 0.3045) are fabricated in a low-cost, environment-friendly way.
