Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (N,P-C-dots) were prepared by microwave-assisted thermolysis of N-phosphonomethyl aminodiacetic acid and ethylenediamine. N,P-C-dots exhibit bright blue fluorescence with an emission maximum at 418 nm. Experimental results show that they have uniform dispersion with the average size of 3.3 nm, a fluorescence decay time of 7.8 ns, a quantum yield of 17.5 %, low toxicity, and good stability. All these make them an excellent choice as a fluorescent nanomaterial for use in cellular imaging.

Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).
Facile Synthesis of N-rich Carbon Quantum Dots from Porphyrins As Efficient Probes for Bioimaging and Biosensing in Living Cells.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become a popular research topic because of their many unique virtues, especially the significance of tunable photoluminescence properties. However, the synthesis of multicolor CQDs is still at an exploratory stage, and there are many dilemmas that have not yet been well resolved, such as long-wavelength emission and solid-state luminescence. Here, we selected suitable carbon and dopant sources as precursors for the synthesis of CQDs through the rational design of the experiments in an aqueous system, and the as-prepared CQDs possessed blue, green, yellow and red emissions, with optimal emissions of approximately 475 nm, 530 nm, 580 nm, and 645 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding PLQYs were 30.13 %, 36.84 %, 39.16 % and 21.36 %, respectively. It was found that the redshift of the emission wavelengths can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the increase in the sp 2 conjugate size and the surface states. To conquer the aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) of CQDs and realize the solid-state luminescence of CQDs, we successfully prepared solid-state fluorescent films and solid-state phosphors. Finally, multicolor CQDs were successfully applied to prepare monochromatic and white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). The adopted green synthesis technology can provide a good technical support for the future development of CQDs synthesis.

Abstract:We report a rational strategy for scalable production of highly fluorescent CQDs in high yields (50-92%) based on controlled molecule fusion of activated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in environmentally friendly polar solvents. By simply varying the composition of reaction solvents, their bandgaps were systematically manipulated, enabling the adjustment of fluorescent emissions from blue to red. Similar to conventional organic-soluble quantum dots but distinct from extensively reported water-soluble CQDs, the CQDs engineered in polar solvents are highly soluble in organic solvents and possess main features of intrinsic bandgap transitions, including overlapping of absorption and excitation spectra, excitation-independence fluorescence, the inversely proportional relationship of the bandgaps with fluorescence peak wavelength, and mono-exponential fluorescence decay. What's more, the red-fluorescent CQDs were encapsulated by liposomes, providing good biocompatibility and excellent in vitro and in vivo imaging capabilities. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Hydrothermal method is a common way to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs), but perplexing by-products are non-negligible shortcoming. The small molecules associated with CQDs synthesis have drawn more attentions because of their luminescent property. In this work, Na-doped CQDs with excellent photoluminescent property as well as small molecules 4,4′-diaminoazobenzene with photochromism characteristic were prepared based on p-phenylenediamine and sodium hydroxide via one-step solvothermal method. The photoluminescence of as-synthesized Na-doped CQDs is tremendously influenced by H+ ions, and CQDs-O- Na+ structure existing in Na-doped CQDs was verified. At the same time, photochromism which was owing to by-product 4,4′-diaminoazobenzene with photochromic was observed and investigated. The absorption spectrum of 4,4′-diaminoazobenzene overlaps markedly with the photoluminescence spectrum of Na-doped CQDs and thus result in fluorescence internal filtering effect, by which the fluorescence causes interesting photochromism phenomenon. Furthermore, compared with conventional synthetic route of 4,4′-diaminoazobenzene, this method has the advantages of simplicity and metal-free.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) were synthesized by two facile hydrothermal technologies. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the GQDs and S-GQDs samples were mainly investigated. Through regulating the content of S powders in S-GQDs synthesizing process, the optimal S-GQDs have a high S/C atomic ratio of 19.53%. The S doping introduce more functional groups on the C sp2 skeleton of S-3 sample and result in the appearance of the strong absorption band in the UV region. In comparison with other reported S-GQDs, the S-GQDs exhibit overwhelming high fluorescence quantum yield (57%) and excitation-independent emission, resulting from the outcome of the doped sulfur atoms. Moreover, the PL intensity of GQDs can be increased by doping it with S and the increasing efficiency depends on the thiophene sulfur content.

Abstract:An easy, large-scale synthesis of N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was developed by using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a single carbon source under microwave irradiation. The yield of raw N-doped CQDs was about 83%, which is suitable for industrial-scale production. A detailed formation mechanism for N-doped CQDs involving self-polymerization and condensation of IPDI was demonstrated. Moreover, the obtained N-doped CQDs can be homogeneously dispersed in various organic monomers and do not need toxic organic solvents as dispersing agents. This advantage expands the range of applications of CQDs in composites. The N-doped CQDs dispersed in polyurethane (PU) matrixes emit not only fluorescence but also phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence at room temperature upon excitation with ultraviolet (UV) light. Furthermore, the phosphorescence of CQD/PU composites is sensitive to oxygen and therefore, the obtained-CQDs could be exploited in the development of novel oxygen sensors.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) are prepared via one-step hydrothermal processing using citric acid and linear-structured polyethyleneimine (LPEI) polymer as raw materials. The LPEI serves not only as a nitrogen source for N-doping but also as a surface-passivation agent for surface modification. The as-obtained N-CQDs show a mean size of 1.67 nm and a high fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 37.4%. In addition, with the remaining LPEI on the surface, the N-CQDs also show good water-solubility and reducibility for noble metal ions to construct CQDs-containing composites. After a set of careful examinations of the as-obtained N-CQDs, the so-called up-conversion photoluminescence (UCPL) of CQDs under an excitation of a xenon lamp, which are observed in previous reports, is found to be a false appearance caused by the second-order diffraction light from the monochromators of the spectrofluorimeter.

Abstract:A facile strategy is reported to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with fluorescence emission by a one-step hydrothermal treatment under different temperatures with dicyanodiamide and citric acid as precursor materials of nitrogen and carbon sources, respectively. The as-produced N-CQDs display green or blue fluorescence under the ultraviolet lamp was controlled by the reaction temperature. Consequently, the as-prepared sample reacted at 200 ° C (N-CQDs-200), within the range of 3 nm, exhibits blue fluorescence excited at 365 nm irradiation with the maximum quantum yield (QY) of ca. 30.6%. Moreover, the N-CQDs possess rich functional groups such as nitrous groups and multiple oxygenated groups, which result in a favorable solubility in most hydrophilic solvents. From the characterization and discussion of TEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, XPS, Raman and UV-Vis, it is illustrated that the fluorescence performance was largely related to the nanomorphology, nitrogen concentration, multi-surface emission sites and various forms of transitions derived from the nitrogen doping. With the excellent fluorescence performance and the favorable solubility in solvents, the products are potentially suitable for monitoring organics.

Abstract:Fluorescent N-doped carbon nanodots (CNDs) are a type of environmentally friendly nanomaterial that is promising for application in cell imaging and optoelectronics. In this paper, a natural amino acid (l-glutamic acid) was used as a precursor, and two different morphological and structured N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a one-step ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method at 230 and 250 °C. Various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques were employed to characterize the morphology, structure, optical properties, and stability of the CQDs. The results showed that N-CQDs-1 are new CNDs composed of amorphous carbon with a large amount of pyroglutamic acid, and N-CQDs-2 are composed of pure amorphous carbon. The CQDs exhibit excellent optical properties, such as 40.5% quantum yield, strong photobleaching resistance, and superior photostability. Combining the fluorescence lifetimes and radiative and non-radiative decay constants, the photoluminescence mechanism of the CQDs was qualitatively explained. The two CQDs were used for BV2 cell imaging and showed good results, implying the ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal approach as a facile method to obtain structure- and morphology-controllable N-doped CQDs with prospect for application in cell imaging.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are receiving increasing attention for their excellent photostability, low toxicity, and tunable fluorescence performance, but it is still challenging to prepare full-spectrum CQDs using only one single set of precursor and solvent. In this study, P and N co-doped carbon dots (N,Pr-CQDs) with multi-color-emissive tunable fluorescence from blue to green and orange were synthesized from bio-based chitosan, employing phosphoric acid as solvent and dopant. The introduction of phosphoric acid successfully shortens the manufacturing reaction time, and the heteratomic functional groups of P−O/P=O on surface of carbon dots enrich the surface defect states, promoting n−π⋆ transition, and therefore changing their electron structure/energy level to reduce the band gap, thus facilitating emission at long wavelength. Specifically, increasing phosphoric acid concentration leads to characteristic excitation peaks red shift from 320 to 420 nm with the characteristic emission peaks red shift from 406 to 503 nm. A new emission peak at 610 nm appears, enabling N,PR-CQDs exhibit double emission peaks with fluorescence color from green to yellow to orange. After compositing with carbon nitride (g-C3N4), N,Pr-CQDs work as photosensitizer and effectively narrow the energy gap (Eg) of g-C3N4 from 2.75 to 2.40 eV, endowing the photocatalyst higher visible light capture ability and broader light response region. The photocatalytic degradation rate of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation reaches up to 98.39% within 60 min using N,P20%-CQDs/g-C3N4 as catalyst, which is 1.4 times that of pure g-C3N4, and it is demonstrated that ·O2− is the major active substance contributing for RhB degradation by de-ethyl and aromatic ring breakage.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel phosphorus-doped sulfur quantum dots (P-SQDs) material was prepared using a simple hydrothermal method. P-SQDs have a narrow particle size distribution as well as an excellent electron transfer rate and optical properties. Compositing P-SQDs with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) can be used for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes under visible light. More active sites, a narrower band gap, and stronger photocurrent are obtained after introducing P-SQDs into g-C3N4, thus promoting its photocatalytic efficiency by as much as 3.9 times. The excellent photocatalytic activity and reusability of P-SQDs/g-C3N4 are prospective signs of its photocatalytic application under visible light.

Synthesis of Humin-based Carbon Quantum Dots and Luminescent Properties

Abstract:The unique properties of carbon quantum dots(CQDs) make them promising materials in many fields. Herein, we present a facile method for the preparation of photo-luminescent CQDs using humins as the carbon precursor for the purpose of providing a high value-added solution for this "biomass conversion process waste". The structure of the CQDs was analyzed, and the effects of reaction temperature and time on the CQDs' fluorescence were investigated. The results showed that humins were effectively carbonized during the reaction. The fluorescence intensity of humin-based CQDs initially increased with reaction temperature and time, and subsequently decreased beyond 200℃ and 4 h. Polyaromatic structures and hydrophilic groups such as O—H, C—O, —COOH and C＝O groups exist in the CQDs. The huminbased CQDs have the dimension of 3~7 nm with an average size of about 5.5 nm. The highest emission intensity of blue/cyan fluorescence light at 440 nm is achieved on the excitation with UV light at the wavelength of 330 nm.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with strong photoluminescence (PL) emission and intriguing upconversion emission property have been prepared by facile and effective pyrolysis of the salt calcium disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA–2Na–Ca·4H2O) at 400 °C. The relative fluorescence quantum yield of the CQDs in aqueous solution reached 66.03 %, which is the highest value yet obtained. Moreover, the CQDs also had a strong upconversion PL property on excitation at 600–750 nm. It is proposed that an anti-Stokes shift is responsible for this upconversion PL emission.

Abstract:We synthesized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using a solvothermal method with o-phenylenediamine as the carbon and nitrogen source. The sample was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. When we continued the optical characterization of the CQDs, we were surprised to discover that the colors of the synthesized CQDs changed with the dilution of the original solution. In addition, the photoluminescence (PL) of CQDs under 405 nm continuous wave laser excitation was also investigated. It was found that CQDs with different concentrations exhibited different PL spectra. In order to explain the mechanism of different PL spectra, chemical characterization of the CQDs at different concentrations was performed again, revealing that the color change is independent of particle size and surface functional groups. Systematic optical characterization and theoretical analysis indicate that this color change results from the interparticle distance. Furthermore, we investigated the PL lifetimes of CQDs using time-resolved PL measurements and found that the PL lifetime values change with the concentration of CQDs, which is attributed to nonradiative transitions. Finally, we fabricated warm white-light-emitting diodes with CQDs that are proportionally adjusted in concentrations. The investigation developed a simple and effective method to tune the color of CQDs by adjusting the concentration through dilution of the original solution, which provides a new approach for the preparation and regulation of multicolor CQDs.

It is noted that the diameter of CQDs satisfies the quantum size effect, which is also corroborated by the reduced graphitization. The decay processes of CQDs obey double exponential fit. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conclusively determines that the red-shift from yellow-green to red CQDs is associated with the carbon-/oxygen-related surface defects except for the quantum size effect. Intriguingly, multi-color CQDs-based LEDs devices using thermoset epoxy resins have been successfully fabricated, which illustrates the great potential of CQDs for future applications in the luminescence field due to their superior performance and environmentally friendly fabrication.

Abstract:Here, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method using graphite as the carbon source and N,N-dimethylformamide as the nitrogen source. We characterized the structure and chemical constitution of N-CQDs using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We investigated the pump- and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties and the dynamic exciton recombination processes of N-CQDs, using both steady-state and time-resolved PL techniques. The spectral results show that the PL emission peak located at 518 nm at room temperature, mainly originates from the n - p * transition on the surface of N-CQDs. The pump fluence and PL integral intensity were analyzed to demonstrate the existence of single -photon excitation under the 405 nm laser excitation. As the temperature increases, the non -radiative transition gradually increases, which decreases the PL intensity, the full width at half maxima first narrows and then widens and the PL lifetime gradually decreases. Furthermore, we combined the N-CQDs with chip to prepare light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting chromaticity coordinate was obtained to be (0.29, 0.40). This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the luminescence mechanism in N-doped CQDs and introduces a novel approach for the quickly fabrication of full-color display LEDs.
