Abstract:A series of pyridazine coupled tetrathiafulvalene T-shaped derivatives with varying amino acid moieties have been synthesized and their gelation properties were studied in various organic solvents. Among these derivatives, two gelators bearing glycine or phenylalanine units display efficient gelation in aromatic and polar solvents. Interestingly, these gelators, except for the gelator containing two tryptophan units, are able to gel DMF via a solution-to-gel transformation when triggered with sonication for less than 20 s or cooled below zero. A number of experiments revealed that these gelator molecules self-assembled into elastically interpenetrating three-dimensional chiral fibrillar aggregates. Importantly, all of the resulting gels result in a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence intensity compared with their hot solution in spite of the absence of a conventional fluorophore unit and the fluorescence was effectively quenched by the introduction of C60. Moreover, the gelators can be utilized for the removal of different types of toxic molecules, such as aromatic solvents and cationic dyes, from wastewater.

Abstract:This paper describes a new class of heat-set organogels based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and para-substituted anilines (ps-An) connected by supramolecular interactions. The organogel is prepared by mixing β-CD, ps-An and lithium chloride in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The heat-set organogel is a thermo-reversible gel system which turns into a clear solution upon cooling to room temperature and is re-formed when heated to the gelling temperature (Tgel). It is very interesting that the ps-An gelator, as well as other gelators, can be gelated at high temperature but dissolved as the temperature in the system decreases. The organogel is a multi-component system, in which the gelators are small commercially available organic molecules that can self-assemble into fibrous structures based on supramolecular interactions. Further studies showed the Tgel can be influenced and controlled by the substituents of ps-An. The Tgel of the system is higher when the aniline is substituted with electron-donating substituents rather than electron-withdrawing substituents.

Abstract:A series of new platinum-acetylide complexes containing ethynyl-pyrene moieties as the main skeleton were synthesized and characterized. The investigation of the absorption and emission spectra of these complexes revealed that the extension of the molecular size with the introduction of different numbered platinum-acetylide fragments can efficiently tune the absorption and emission bands from the UV to the longer wavelength region. Moreover, the gelation properties of these complexes were investigated by the stable-to-inversion-of-a-test-tube method. Most newly designed platinum-acetylide compounds presented a stable gel-formation property in some of the tested solvents. The morphology of the xerogels was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the concentration- and temperature-dependent absorption and emission properties of these complexes were investigated, which support the formation of J-type assemblies during the aggregation process. More importantly, it was found that the complexes 4?a-C6, 4?a, and 4?a-C18 with four platinum-acetylide fragments presented potential applications as luminescent organometallic gels.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels were developed by taking advantage of an assembly of small dipeptides containing pyrrolo-pyrazole scaffolds. The dipeptides were prepared through a robust and ecofriendly synthetic approach from the commercially available starting materials of diazoalkanes and maleimides. By playing with the functionalization of the scaffold, the choice of the natural amino acid, and the stereochemistry, we were able to obtain phase-selective gels. In particular, one peptidomimetic showed gelation ability and thermoreversibility in aromatic solvents at very low concentrations. Rheology tests showed a typical viscoelastic solid profile, indicating the formation of strong gels that were stable under high mechanical deformation. NMR studies were performed, allowing us to determine the conformational and stereochemical features at the base of the supramolecular interactions.

Synthesis and Gelation Behavior of a Novel Bithiazole Based Low-Molecular-Mass Organic Gelator

Abstract:A novel bithiazole based low-molecular-mass organic gelator was synthesized from 2,2'-diamino-bithiazole through condensation reaction with cholesteryl chloroformate.The structure and purity of the prepared organogelator product were identified by the infrared spectra (FT-IR),the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for hydrogen (1H-NMR),and the time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF HRMS).The assembly behavior of the prepared organogelator in solution was investigated.The organogelator induces gelation of a wide variety of organic solvents,especially for aromatic solvents.The critical gelation concentration (CGC) of the prepared gelator in toluene is 7 mg·mL-1.The field emission scanning eletron microscope (FE-SEM) images exhibit that the xerogels from toluene and CHCl3 solution contain sheet structure.The curly sheet structures in the xerogel from toluene solution demonstrate that the prepared organogelator has good gelation properties in toluene.The infrared spectra (FT-IR) and UV-vis absorption spectra show that the hydrogen bonding between amide group and the π-π stacking interaction between bithiazoles are the main driving forces for the formation of organogels.

Abstract:We describe herein the two-component charge-transfer (CT) interaction induced organogel formation with 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid appended pyrene (GA-pyrene, 3) as the donor, and 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF, 4) as the acceptor. The use of TNF (4) as a versatile electron acceptor in the formation of CT gels is demonstrated through the formation of gels in a variety of solvents. Thermal stability, stoichiometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical micrographs, and circular dichroism (CD) are performed on these CT gels to investigate their thermal and assembly properties. UV–vis, fluorescence, mass spectrometric as well as variable-temperature 1H NMR experiments on these gels suggest that the CT interaction is one of the major driving forces for the formation of these organogels.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive supramolecular organogels are fascinating for their dynamically controllable features, but it is difficult for most versatile linear vinyl polymers to construct suitable cross-linking points in oils or organic solvents. Here, a mesomorphic organogelator was fabricated by self-assembly of one azopyridine-containing polymer and oleic acid for the first time. Particularly, oleic acid acts as not only one important component to construct the mesogenic gelator but also the solvent entrapped in the interstices of the physically cross-linked three-dimensional (3D) network. The resulting organogel shows a macroscopic gel-sol transition upon external triggers of temperature, light, and organic metal ions. Accordingly, holographic gratings were successfully inscribed in the organogel, whose switching behaviors were obtained by manipulation of the three external stimuli. This provides a simple and elegant strategy to construct multiresponsive supramolecular liquid-crystalline polymer organogels with promising applications in optics, data storage, and sensors.

Abstract:A phenyl and a 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl ring, each bearing a tris(n-dodecyloxy) benzylamine moiety via an amide bond, were tethered together through an imine linkage to give a non-covalent synthon (imine 1) with a strong capacity of supramolecular self-assembly. Gelation was observed in several organic solutions, within which fibrous aggregate morphologies were visualized by SEM and AFM. Both arene-perfluoroarene stacking and amide-amide hydrogen bonding interactions were responsible for such self-assembly behaviours, as evidenced by H-1 NMR studies. Hydrolysis of the imine linkage catalyzed by acid strongly weakened the intermolecular interactions, resulting in dissociation of the low molecular weight gelator and giving rise to an acid-mediated gel-sol transition.

Abstract:Fully-conjugated styrylbenzoxazoles and styrylbenzothiazoles of BOAF24, BOACl24, BOACl35, BOABr24, BOABr35, BTAF24, BTACl24 and BTABr24 without traditional gelation groups could form organogels. It was found that introduction of chlorine atoms in the 2,4-positions of the phenyl group would improve gelation abilities, and benzothiazole derivatives exhibited better gelation abilities than benzoxazoles with a similar -skeleton due to better -electron delocalization. Interestingly, the organogel of BTACl24 could change into solution by UV light due to trans-cis isomerization, which could also induce morphological changes in xerogels. The smooth organogel nanofibers stretched out lots of thin arms' to hold together or to catch other nanofibers upon UV irradiation, so more entangled networks were generated. Moreover, TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) could induce a gel-sol transformation on account of the protonation of the benzoxazole or benzothiazole unit, accompanied by emission quenching. BTACl24 exhibited higher performance than BOACl24 in the detection of TFA because of its strong basicity. The decay time and the detection limit of BTACl24 in xerogel-based film towards TFA vapor were of 0.7 s and 0.3 ppm, respectively. Therefore, organogelation of non-traditional organogelators is a powerful approach to the fabrication of multi-stimuli-responsive soft materials, and provides a new method to generate more entangled 3D networks through photochemical reactions in xerogels.

Abstract:Herein, first reports on gel-to-gel transformation via [2+2] photo polymerization in MOGs of metal halides and rigid diene is demonstrated. The MOGs and their xerogels show exceptional ability to undergo [2+2] polymerisation upon uv irradiation. Gel-to-gel transformations are very rare as the post-modification of the gelator weakens the gel and transforms to sol. Such transformation changes the molecular assemblies turning into gels with alterted mechanical and chemical properties These phenomena paves the way to synthesize new MOGs with improved rigiduty that can't be synthesized otherwise

Abstract:Functional supramolecular organogels with unique properties and morphology can be obtained by designing gelators's chemical structure. Rosin, an important natural renewable diterpene resource, consists of a rigid ring skeleton and chiral structure similar to triterpenoids and has excellent self-assembly ability in solution. In this paper, four novel rosin-based derivatives were proposed and synthesized in one step by introducing phosphamide groups by using natural rosin as raw material. They could form eleven types of monoamide and diamide organogels in specific solvents. The minimum gelatinization concentration is 50–180 mg/mL. In particular, by adjusting the number and type of phosphamide groups and rigid structures, the morphology and other properties of the gel could be modulated. Two-dimension lamellar and three-dimensional fiber network organogels were obtained and the hydrogen bond and π–π stack were proved to be the most important driving forces for the gelation. What is particularly important is that the gels exhibited multiple stimulus responsiveness, such as temperature, acid-base and anions. Thus, the four dehydroabietylamine phosphamide gelators synthesized by the one-step method provide new ways of designing novel gel-based soft materials for intelligent response, ion detection, etc.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels and liquid crystals are two important organic soft materials in self-assembly systems. A series of new low-molecular-weight organic gels was synthesized by connecting two cholesterol molecules and two hydrophobic chains incorporating amide groups to a central tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (1a-l). Compounds 1a-l and their corresponding charge transfer complexes easily formed a stable supramolecular gel in various organic solvents and their self-assembly morphologies and structures were investigated. It was revealed that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction played important roles in the gelation process. More importantly, nearly half of the gelators exhibited liquid crystalline phases of type smectic A in a particular temperature region; there was no crystallization but there was vitrifying to form glassy mesogens during cooling from the isotropic melt. The effects of the linker chain length and terminal alkoxy chain on liquid crystals were studied. The liquid crystalline organogelator with TTF unit was first designed and synthesized. It was demonstrated that the gelators obtained from cyclohexane had a strong ability to adsorb the toxic dye Rhodamine B from water. This property of this series of compounds is considered to have potential utilization for the removal of toxic dye molecules from wastewater.

Abstract:novel tripodal gelator, functionalized by three urea and three azobenzene moieties grafted with three long alkyl chains, was designed and synthesized. The morphologies and surface properties of the xerogels prepared from this gelator strongly depend on the polarity of the gelling solvent. Cabbage-like topography and superhydrophobicity were observed in the xerogel formed from a low polar aromatic solvent such as xylene. The wettability of a xerogel could be turned from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity by applying a sol-gel process with different solvents. Spectral and structural analysis of the xerogels revealed a basic bilayer arrangement of molecules with polarity changing on going from the inner hydrophilic regions toward the outer region ( edge) of the layer. The cooperation and relative competition of hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and azobenzene-azobenzene interactions are suggested to be the main contribution for the bilayer structure self-assembly. This two-dimensional self-assembly and the growth of nanostructures are remarkable in view of the usual fibrous aggregates given by organogels.

Abstract:A Pd(II)/Cu(I) cocatalyzed homocoupling reaction of terminal alkynes to diynes was used to synthesize conjugated polymer organogels with tetragonal topological frameworks consisting of Zn-porphyrin units as nodes and diynes as struts. This material appears fibrous with a micrometer length, possesses outstanding elastic properties, and could be organized into desired modules. Upon drying, the transformed xerogels afford superior thermal stability and microporosity, implying that they are supported by conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) skeletons at the molecular level. The microporosity of CMP-structured xerogels could be adjusted by varying the monomer concentrations, reaction temperatures and solvent species. The notable narrowed pore size distribution is achieved under optimal conditions, which results in CMP-supported xerogels outperforming the most reported CMPs, although the networks are still amorphous in nature. By following the same synthesis route, for the first time, the interpenetrating polymer network organogels were prepared by forming two CMP components sequentially in a temperature-controlled manner and in one pot. This provides an unprecedented combination of multiple interwoven CMP modules whose functions could be assembled synergistically for prospective broader applications.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis and self-assembly of a Schiff-based molecules N,N'-[1,4-phenylenebis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)]bis[3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)aniline](PBBA).It was found that PBBA could form stable gels in several weak polar solvents such as benzyl alcohol,octanol,1-butanol and 2-propanol.The gel-to-solution phase-transition temperatures(Tg) of gels in selected solvents increase with the enhancing of gelator concentration.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) images revealed that their xerogel morphologies were aggregations of fibers.The results from fourier trasform infrared spectrometry(FT-IR) indicated that the van der Waals interaction between the alkyl chains and π-π interactions were the main driving forces for the formation of the self-assembled gels.Further detailed analyses of their aggregation modes were conducted by X-ray diffraction(XRD) measurements.The most prominent features are reflections at 2θ=32°,which are assigned to van der Waals interactions between alkyl chains with a mean distance of 2.796 4 .The peak at 2θ=22° indicates another unit with a typical distance of 4.039 6 ,which is assumed to correspond to π-π stacking interactions.
