Abstract:Two asymmetrical, amphiphilic perylene derivatives, N -Decyl-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D1E2 ) and N -(1-Decylundecyl)-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D2E2 ), have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds contain one long hydrophobic chain on one end and two hydrophilic ethoxy chains on the other end. Self-assembly of these molecules in a variety of solvents has been demonstrated. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that these compounds self-assembled to various nanostructures in different solvents. The most well-defined structure was flexible nanoribbons obtained from D1E2 precipitation in methanol. The UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these compounds in solution and solid form are also reported. The self-assembled nanostructures have potential applications in optoelectronics.
Self-Assembling and Piezofluorochromic Properties of Tert-Butylcarbazole-Based Schiff Bases and the Difluoroboron Complex

Abstract:New tert-butylcarbazole-based Schiff bases TPMP and TPMA, as well as the difluoroboron complex of salicylaldimine TPOB were synthesized. It was found that TPMP and TPMA without any traditional gelation group could form organogels in toluene and o-dichlorobenzene, etc., stimulated by ultrasound. It was suggested that the planar π-skeletons and the large steric effect of tert-butyl groups would lead to appropriate π-π interaction to induce the gel formation. Interestingly, the nanofibers formed from salicylaldimine derivative TPMP could emit strong yellowish green light under UV irradiation. It should be noted that the difluoroboron complex of TPOB with non-planar aromatic unit could not gelate the selected solvents on account of the weak π-π interaction. However, it showed reversible piezofluorochromism. The as-prepared crystal of TPOB emitted strong yellow light and could be transformed into the powders emitting orange red light after grinding, and the fluorescence could recover when the ground powders were heated. Such reversible changes of the emitting colors for TPOB by the treatment of grinding and heating was resulted from the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states. Herein, we provided the strategy for fabricating new nontraditional π-gels directed by appropriate π-π interaction and new piezofluorochromic dyes via the introduction of non-planar π-skeletons.
Nontraditional Π Gelators Based on Β‐iminoenolate and Their Difluoroboron Complexes: Effect of Halogens on Gelation and Their Fluorescent Sensory Properties Towards Acids

Abstract:We have synthesized a series of new beta-iminoenolates and their corresponding difluoroboron complexes without any traditional gelation moieties, and some of them were able to gelatinize organic solvents. It was found that the presence of halogen atoms as substituents had a significant effect on gelation ability. In particular, bromo-containing compounds 4A and 4B exhibited excellent gelation abilities compared with other halogen-substituted gelators. By analyses of the single-crystal structure, the PXRD pattern of the xerogel, and electronic spectral changes during gelation, we deemed that pi-pi, C-H center dot center dot center dot Br, and C-H center dot center dot center dot Br interactions were the driving forces for the gelation of 4B. Interestingly, (Z)-1(4-bromophenyl)-2-(3-methylpyrazin-2-yl) ethen-1-ol (8A), prepared in this work, is the lowest-molecular-weight organogelator to have been reported. It should be noted that although beta-iminoenolates 3A-5A are nonemissive in solution, they emit strong yellow light in organogels, which suggests aggregation-induced emissive activity, whereas the difluoro-boron complexes 3B-5B show strong fluorescence in solutions, organogels, and xerogel-based films. Moreover, we found that the emission of 4B in a nanofiber-based film could be quenched significantly upon exposure to gaseous trifluoroacetic acid and that the decay time and detection limit were 0.5 s and 0.17 ppm, respectively. Thus, through this work we have provided a new strategy for the design of nontraditional pi gelators by introducing halogen atoms into pi-conjugated systems with moderate polarities.

Abstract:New beta-diketone-boron difluoride complexes functionalized with tetraphenylethene (TPEB, DTPEB and TTPEB) which exhibit AIE (aggregation-induced emission) properties have been synthesized. It was found that only boomerang-shaped DTPEB without any traditional gelation groups could form organogel in specific organic solvents. It gave strong orange red fluorescence in organogel as well as in xerogel-based film although it was non-emissive in solution. It is interesting that the emission of DTPEB in xerogel-based film could be quenched significantly upon exposure to triethylamine (TEA) vapour, and the detection limit was as low as ca. 0.1 ppb. This work provides a strategy for the synthesis of a new rigid non-traditional pi-gelator via the construction of a boomerang-shaped pi-conjugated skeleton. Abstract:The incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens provides a molecule with enhanced fluorescent emission in the solid state. A representative AIEgen compound is tetraphenylethene (TPE). A series of new conjugates of quinolone derivatives with TPE units (1a - 1f) was synthesized and characterized. The influence on the photophysics of 1a - 1e with a variety of functional groups was investigated systematically by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density-functional theory calculations. A centrosymmetric compound donor-acceptor-donor-type compound 1f with two TPE moieties proved to be the most promising multi-functional material, it exhibited tri-colored (489-569 nm) fluorescence characteristics in tetrahydrofuran-H2O solution with a different water fraction and intense tri-colored solvatochromic (blue, green, and yellow) behaviors. These compounds could be applied as promising acid-base gas probe based on their evident color switch. Compounds 1a - 1f showed the advantage of being a potential piezochromic material.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and perylene diimine (PDI) dye moieties with unique structure and strong light absorption have been widely explored as building blocks for organic opto-electronic materials. In this work, we implement a proof-of-concept of welding DPP and PDI together as propellers for the design of novel molecules with star-shaped or three-dimensional (3D) geometries and minimized self-aggregation. Three large conjugated molecules Ph(DPP-PDI)3, Py(DPP-PDI)4 and SF(DPP-PDI)4 with different central cores, i.e., benzene, pyrene and spirofluorene, are designed and facilely synthesized via atom- and step-economic C–H direct arylation (DACH) coupling. The optical, electrochemical properties and photovoltaic performance of target molecules with varied geometries, are systematically investigated by UV–vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry and bulk heterojunction devices, which reveal that 3D molecules have a broader light absorption, much higher extinction coefficients and more favorable energy levels compared with mono DPP-PDI precursor. Our study demonstrates that DACH reaction is an effective and extensible method to prepare branched or 3D π-electronic materials, and provides a guideline for the rational design and synthesis of complex π-molecules in a simple way.

Abstract:A fluorescent non-conventional organogelator, 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, was found to be an integrated platform with multiple functionality. Balanced supramolecular interactions, based on pi-pi stacking between aromatic rings and intermolecular hydrogen bonding between neighboring imidazole rings, promote solvent gelation with a critical gelation concentration of 1.2 mg/mL (3.03 x 10(-3) mol/L) in cyclohexane. The intermolecular interactions can be modified by mechanical force, giving it piezochromic properties, and the xerogel has a much higher specific surface area, conferring higher sensitivity to pressure compared to the crystalline powder. The presence of imidazole in the gelator enables a selective response to fluoride anion. Addition of 0.3 equivalents of fluoride anion destroyed the gel (1.2 mg/mL), resulting in precipitation of a red solid that was isolated and identified by H-1 NMR and X-ray single crystal analysis. The red solid can be converted to the starting gelator molecule by addition of water to provide a recyclable chemosensor. Abstract:Optimization and manipulation of the fluorescence properties and nanoscale morphologies of π-conjugated organic luminogens are seminal for the fabrication of functional photoluminescent materials. Herein, we report a facile and effective strategy to achieve persistent enhanced luminescence and self-driven gelation via the covalent linking of pyrene and pillar[5]arene (P[5]-Py). Monomer emission of P[5]-Py is primarily promoted in various solvents, attributed to charge transfer from the macrocycle to the pyrene arm, as verified by theoretical calculations. The self-assembly of P[5]-Py results in supramolecular gels with unique "region-dependent" luminescence, simultaneously driven by π–π interactions between pyrene groups and exowall interactions of pyrene and the macrocycle backbone. Significantly, the relationship between the emissive performance and assembly patterns of P[5]-Py was elucidated. Efficient air-stable organometallic low-molecular-mass gelators for ionic liquids: synthesis, aggregation and application of pyridine-bridged bis(benzimidazolylidene)-palladium complexes.

Abstract:Novel pincer-type, pyridine-bridged bis(benzimidazolylidene)-palladium complexes 5-7 were synthesised from cheap commercial precursors under microwave assistance. Although simple in structure, carbene complexes 5a,b are efficient low-molecular-mass metallogelators. They gelate not only a broad variety of protic and aprotic organic solvents, but also different types of customary ionic liquids (such as imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrazolidinium, piperidinium and ammonium salts) at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg mL(-1). The morphologies of the resulting 3D gel networks composed from long and thin fibres were studied by TEM and light microscopy for a selection of organic and ionic liquids. The achiral gelators are able to induce the formation of helical fibres. The thermal stability of the gel samples increases with the gelator concentration as demonstrated by thermo reversible DSC studies. Temperature-dependent NMR and X-ray diffraction studies, as well as comparisons with pincer complex analogues bearing shorter alkyl chains, suggest that the 3D networks responsible for gelation are based on non-covalent interactions, such as pi-stacking, van der Waals interactions, and hydrogen and metal-metal bonding. Ionic liquids and gels obtained from them and 5a,b display comparable high conductivities, which characterises pyridine-bridged bis(benzimidazolylidene)-palladium pincer complexes as air-stable metallo gelators that efficiently immobilise ionic liquids in low gelator concentration indicating-beyond catalysis-their potential applications in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Three D-pi-A 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with aggregation-induced emission characteristics were synthesized. The molecules comprise of a 4-(dimethylamino)styryl group as the electron donor group and different end groups, dicyanomethylene, vinylcyanoacetate, and 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione, as the electron acceptor, respectively. These target compounds display different stimulus responsive fluorescent properties in the solid state. The original samples with the dicyanomethylene and vinylcyanoacetate groups do not show fluorescence color changes in response to external force stimuli, whereas the compound containing the 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione unit exhibits reversible piezochromism and solvent-induced emission changes due to the transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states, which can be ascribed to their different molecular stacking mode in the solid state. Furthermore, these compounds show different acid/base-induced solid-state fluorescence switching properties due to the different sites of the protonation. Additionally, all of the derivatives can be fabricated into biocompatible fluorescent nanoparticles and used for MCF-7 cell imaging. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a one-pot synthesis of a series of unprecedented angular-fused diaza-dinaphthopyrene isomers (1,8-DNPy and 1,6-DNPy) in high yields, which are enabled by regio-selective Bischler-Napieralski cyclization to fuse two quinolone rings either on the same or opposite faces of a pyrene core. Benefiting from the high reactivity of the 1- and 8-positions of the pyrene ring, steric effect from substitution and remarkably different dipole moments, high ring closure selectivity for the 1,8-form vs. the 1,6-form up to 6 : 1 is achieved with ease of separation. With differentiated molecular symmetry, conformation, intermolecular interactions and aromaticity, the two kinds of regio-isomers exhibit distinct single-crystal structures and optoelectronic properties. Impressively, isomer-dependent mechanochromic fluorescent properties of these 2D-azaacenes are identified, which are unique in their turn-on fluorescence feature and contrasting spectral shifts. These findings allow facile and modular access to regio-specific 2D-N-heteroarenes, which provide a way to create innovative optical sensors with improved sensitivity and fruitful fluorescent properties.

Abstract:A novel triarmed cis-1, 3, 5-cyclohexanetricarboxamides gelator, functionalized by three azobenzene moieties grafted with three long alkyl chains, was designed and synthesized. The gelator can gel most of the organic solvents in low concentration. The morphologies of the xerogels show one-dimensional aggregated bundles or helical fibres. The azobenzene groups in the gel state form H-type aggregation and perform expected trans–cis photoisomerization with a gel to sol phase transition upon irradiation of UV light. The main driving force for gelation is intermolecular hydrogen bonding between amides and π–π interaction of azobenzene moieties. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Spirofluorene‐cored bis(difluoroboron β‐diketonate) complexes bearing terminal carbazoles (CbzBSF) and tert‐butylcarbazoles (TCbzBSF) have been synthesized. It was found that only TCbzBSF could form organogels in cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane, suggesting that tert‐butylcarbazole was essential for its organogelation directed by weak π–π interactions. It is worth noting that TCbzBSF could entrap ca. 5800 molecules of methylcyclohexane per gelator molecule, so this fully conjugated complex without traditional gelation group could be considered as a supergelator. The gained organogel showed reversible thixotropic and temperature‐dependent sol‐gel transitions. In particular, the orange red fluorescence of the xerogel‐based film of TCbzBSF could be quenched when exposed to gaseous aromatic amines of aniline, N‐methylaniline, and N,N‐dimethylaniline. The detection limit for aniline vapor of the xerogel‐based film was as low as 0.56 ppb.

Abstract:It has been difficult to decipher the mechanistic issue whether E/Z isomerization is involved in the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) process of a tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative, due to the difficulty in the synthesis of its pure E and Z conformers. In this work, pure stereoisomers of a TPE derivative named 1,2-bis{4-[1-(6-phenoxyhexyl)-4-(1,2,3-triazol)yl]phenyl}-1,2-diphenylethene (BPHTATPE) are successfully synthesized. Both isomers show remarkable AIE effect (α(AIE) ≥ 322) and high fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state (Φ(F) 100%). The conformers readily undergo E/Z isomerization upon exposure to a powerful UV light and treatment at a high temperature (>200 °C). Such conformational change, however, is not observed under normal fluorescence spectrum measurement conditions, excluding the involvement of the E/Z isomerization in the AIE process of the TPE-based luminogen. The molecules of (E)-BPHTATPE self-organize into ordered one-dimensional nanostructures such as microfibers and nanorods that show obvious optical waveguide effect. BPHTATPE shows rich chromic effects, including mechano-, piezo-, thermo-, vapo-, and chronochromisms. Its emission peak is bathochromically shifted by simple grinding and pressurization and the spectral change is reversed by fuming with a polar solvent, heating at a high temperature, or storing at room temperature for some time. The multiple chromic processes are all associated with changes in the modes of molecular packing.
Luminescent Non-Traditional Π-Gels Fabricated from Pyrimidine Derivatives Bearing Carbazole for the Detection of Acid Vapors

Abstract:A series of new pyrimidine derivatives modified with carbazole (CM, CMH, CMCl and CMBr) and tert-butyl carbazole (TCM, TCMH, TCMCl and TCMBr) were synthesized. It was found that CM, CMCl, CMBr, TCM, TCMCl and TCMBr without traditional gelation groups could self-assemble into organogels with intense emission. It was found that V-shaped pi-conjugated skeleton and pi-pi interactions were essential for the organogelation. It was interesting that the organogels could be destroyed by adding TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), accompanied with the quenching of the emission on account of the protonation of pyrimidine unit. In particular, the xerogel-based film of TCM emitting strong bluish green light could be used as fluorescent sensor to detect TFA vapor with the decay time and detection limit of 0.6 s and 95 ppb, respectively. Such high performance of the xerogel-based film in fluorescent responsive ability was originated from the high surface-to-volume ratios of nanomaterials and the large space in 3D networks, which were favorable for the adsorption and diffusion of the analytes. We provided new strategy for the design of non-traditional pi-gelators and the fabrication of fluorescent sensory materials with high performance to detect gaseous analytes.
Photomodulated Morphologies in Halogen Bond-Driven Assembly during Gel-Sol Transition

Abstract:Photoresponsive supramolecular gels with various applications are being constantly pursued; however, achieving well-defined morphology changes of gels via light irradiation remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a gel is prepared through halogen bond between azopyridine-containing Azopy-C10 and 1,4-tetrafluorodiiodobenzene. The gel exhibits gel-sol transition due to trans-cis isomerization of the azopyridine moiety upon UV irradiation. During this transition, the morphologies vary from flake to fluffy bobble-like and finally to peony-like with increasing exposure time, which is difficult to achieve in traditional assembly systems. The microstructure change is attributed to the variations of cis-isomer content and halogen-bonding strength. The supramolecular gel provides a novel method to achieve photomodulated morphologies and broadens the applications of such kind of materials, ranging from information storage to high-tech anticounterfeit.
