Abstract:A novel piezochromic fluorescent (PCF) compound with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect and morphology-alterable emission property was developed. The amorphous and crystalline aggregates were obtained, and their spectroscopic properties and morphological structures were reversibly and repeatedly exhibited upon pressing (fuming) or annealing. The piezochromic fluorescent nature was generated through crystalline-amorphous phase transformation. It was proposed that AIE compounds existing a twisted propeller-shaped conformation will exhibit PCF activity. The common relationship betweeen AIE and PCF established will guide researchers in identifying and synthesizing more piezochromic fluorescent materials.

Abstract:A new piezofluorochromic aggregation-induced emission compound was synthesized. The compound had morphology-alterable emission property and its amorphous and crystalline aggregates with various emissions were obtained through evaporation from the solutions in different solvent systems. The spectroscopic properties and morphological structures of the compound were reversed upon pressing and annealing (or fuming). The results show that the piezofluorochromic nature is generated through crystalline–amorphous phase transformation under external pressure. The reason for the phase transformation is ascribed to the twisted conformation of the molecule which leads to poor solid molecular packing and formation of some cavities in the interfaces of lamellar layers, as confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Piezochromic luminescent materials with multi-color switching have recently attracted much attention owing to their appealing applications in the field of advanced photonics, such as optical recording, memory and sensors. Mechanical grinding and diamond anvil cell (DAC) devices are two common ways to investigate piezochromic materials. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress of piezochromic materials and their behaviours under hydrostatic pressure generated from DAC, in particular, different types of organic piezochromic materials. We describe their spectroscopic phenomena, discuss corresponding mechanisms, and intend to find the inherent clues hidden in the scattered literature.

Abstract:Piezochromic luminescent (PCL) materials have attracted extensive research interest due to their potential applications in mechanosensors, ink-free printing, optical data storage, optoelectronic devices, etc. However, there is rarely report about near infrared (NIR) piezochromic luminescence of π-conjugated organic materials under external hydrostatic pressure. Herein, we design and prepare five pressure-sensitive AIEgens: TPAM, BTPAM, FTPAM, MTPAM and MOTPAM. All these materials exhibit obvious piezochromic luminescence behaviors, whereby their emission color exhibit significant blue-shift upon gentle manual grinding due to the phase transition from the crystalline to the amorphous state. As the increase of applied hydrostatic pressure, a significant emission red-shift even over 200 nm towards the NIR region with the modification of substituents, which is attributed to the enhanced intermolecular π - π interactions. While the unsubstituted TPAM did not exhibit any red-shift emission due to the synergistic effect of enhanced intermolecular interactions and molecular configuration deformation during compression process.

Abstract:Three D-pi-A 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with aggregation-induced emission characteristics were synthesized. The molecules comprise of a 4-(dimethylamino)styryl group as the electron donor group and different end groups, dicyanomethylene, vinylcyanoacetate, and 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione, as the electron acceptor, respectively. These target compounds display different stimulus responsive fluorescent properties in the solid state. The original samples with the dicyanomethylene and vinylcyanoacetate groups do not show fluorescence color changes in response to external force stimuli, whereas the compound containing the 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione unit exhibits reversible piezochromism and solvent-induced emission changes due to the transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states, which can be ascribed to their different molecular stacking mode in the solid state. Furthermore, these compounds show different acid/base-induced solid-state fluorescence switching properties due to the different sites of the protonation. Additionally, all of the derivatives can be fabricated into biocompatible fluorescent nanoparticles and used for MCF-7 cell imaging. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Two new AIE-active triphenylamine-based aza-N,O-chelated boron difluoride dyes (E)-3-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-2,2-difluoro-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4,2-oxadiazaborol-3-ium-2-uide (TPA-H) and (E)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylidene)-2,2-difluoro-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4,2-oxadiazaborol-3-ium-2-uide (TPA-Cl) were designed and synthesized. The reversible mechanochromism and piezochromism for TPA-H and TPA-Cl under mechanical stimulus and hydrostatic pressure were observed, while TPA-Cl with a chlorine atom gave a more sensitive and pronounced mechanochromic and piezochromic response under mechanical stimulus and hydrostatic pressure. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-pressure PL and UV–vis absorption spectra analysis were applied to further investigated their different mechanochromism and piezochromism. Fine-tuning the molecular structures of triphenylamine-based aza-N,O-chelated boron difluoride dyes allowed convenient modulation of their optical properties and mechanoresponsive behaviors.

Abstract:New fluorescent compounds containing triphenylethylene and tetraphenylethylene moieties were synthesized, and their piezofluorochromic and aggregation-induced emission behaviors were investigated. The results show that all compounds exhibit aggregation-induced emission characteristics and only the crystalline compound possesses piezofluorochromic properties. The color, emission spectra, and morphological structures of the one piezofluorochromic compound exhibit reversibility upon grinding and annealing (or fuming) treatments. The piezofluorochromic behaviors are caused by a change between different modes of solid state molecular packing under external pressure. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the twisted conformation of the aggregation-induced emission compound leads to the formation of metastable crystal lattice with cavity which is readily destroyed under external pressure. A possible mechanism of piezofluorochromic phenomenon has been proposed.

Abstract:New piezofluorochromic compounds with high thermal stabilities and aggregation-induced emission behavior were developed. The spectroscopic properties and morphological structures of these compounds were reversed upon pressing (or grinding)/annealing (or fuming). The switchable color change feature and aggregation-induced emission make the compounds promising candidates for optical recording, pressure-sensing, and light-emitting systems.

Abstract:As an important class of stimuli‐responsive material, piezochromic organic materials have been widely investigated in recent years. To promote their further applications as pressure sensors, realizing a high sensitivity and big color contrast, especially under high external pressure, is of great importance. Herein, two pure cis/trans isomers, E‐ANTCN and Z‐ANTCN, based on anthracene and cyano substituted double bond are achieved. The molecular structures are determined by nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, correlation spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. At ambient conditions, both of them show typical mechanochromic characteristics under grinding−heating or grinding−fuming treatments. E‐ANTCN displays a sensitivity of 0.83 nm GPa−1 and a color contrast of 5 nm in a high‐pressure experiment, while Z‐ANTCN shows a much enhanced sensitivity of 22.64 nm GPa−1 and bigger color contrast of 110 nm, indicating the potential as a good colorimetric sensor for external pressure. The two cyano groups in the same side of double bond in Z‐ANTCN induce more intense intermolecular interactions with a resultant spatial packing mode being mainly responsive for its good sensing performance. This study fills the gap for a piezochromic property and high‐pressure experiment of E/Z isomers and provides useful information for the investigation of molecular structural changes under isotropic and anisotropic treatments.

Abstract:Two piezochromic molecules, (2Z,4E)-2-(4-(Diphenylamino)phenyl)-5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienenitrile (1a) and (2Z,4E)-2-(4-(acridin-10(9H)-yl)phenyl)-5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienenitrile (1b), were synthesized by using Knoevenagel and Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling reactions. Their piezochromic fluorescence behavior was tuned by subtle structural change. The system indicates typical intramolecular charge-transfer properties. The luminescence intensity of 1a decreased with increasing pressure with the redshift of the emission wavelength when the hydrostatic pressure in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) was applied on its crystal. However, the emission wavelength of 1b which has a methylene unit more than 1a had no obvious shift and the intensity increased gradually at the pressure range from 0.66 GPa to 5.72 GPa.

Abstract:Piezochromic materials with pressure-dependent photoluminescence tuning properties are important in many fields, such as mechanical sensors, security papers, and storage devices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as an emerging class of crystalline porous materials (CPMs) with structural dynamics and tunable photophysical properties, are suitable for designing piezochromic materials, but there are few related studies. Herein, we report two dynamic three-dimensional COFs based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) or aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) chromophores, termed JUC-635 and JUC-636 (JUC=Jilin University China), and for the first time, study their piezochromic behavior by diamond anvil cell technique. Due to the various luminescent groups, JUC-635 has completely different solvatochromism and molecular aggregation behavior in the solvents. More importantly, JUC-635 with AIE effect exhibits a sustained fluorescence upon pressure increase (≈3 GPa), and reversible sensitivity with high-contrast emission differences (Δλem =187 nm) up to 12 GPa, superior to other CPMs reported so far. Therefore, this study will open a new gate to expand the potential applications of COFs as exceptional piezochromic materials in pressure sensing, barcoding, and signal switching.
Luminogens Based on Cyano‐Substituted Anthracene Isomers: Different Molecular Packing and Distinct Piezochromic Properties

Abstract:Pure organic materials with piezochromic property have been intensively studied in recent years. Many examples describe response to both mechanical grinding and hydrostatic pressure, but the examples in realizing high color contrast as well as high sensitivity, especially under high external pressure, are very rare which hampers their practical applications as pressure sensors. Herein, two anthracene-based structural isomers, NDHA-p and NDHA-m, are developed applying 9,10-bis(diphenylmethylene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) as the basic skeleton and substituted by four cyano groups on para- or meta-positions of the periphery benzene rings, respectively. In high-pressure experiment, as compared to the NDHA-m which shows a color contrast of 60 nm and a sensitivity of 7.87 nm center dot GPa(-1), NDHA-p exhibits a dramatically larger color contrast of 138 nm and higher sensitivity of 13.20 nm center dot GPa(-1), whose performance is among the best pure organic piezochromic materials so far. The systematical experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that NDHA-p possesses a lower crystal density, relatively looser molecular packing mode, and higher degree of electronic communications than NDHA-m, which are responsible for the excellent piezochromic performance. This design method will open a new avenue for controlling the molecular packing configuration of luminescent materials via structural isomerization, and further extending their applications.

Abstract:In advanced photonics, there is a growing interest in piezochromic luminescent materials that exhibit multicolor switching, driven by their potential applications in optical recording, memory, and sensors. Here, the piezochromic behavior of 2,4,6‐triphenylpyrylium tetrachloroferrate (Py‐FeCl4) under high pressures from 0 to 9 GPa is reported. The observed multicolor changing properties of Py‐FeCl4 (yellow–orange–red–maroon–black) are found to be fully reversible upon decompression to ambient conditions. The mechanism of Py‐FeCl4 piezochromism is investigated via Raman, infrared, and UV–vis spectroscopy combined with powder X‐ray Diffraction. The absence of structural phase transitions as well as the abrupt shifts of bandgap values together with characteristic Raman and IR peaks within 0‐9 GPa suggests that the Py‐FeCl4 multicoloring switching behavior is driven by an electron transfer between the inorganic FeCl4− anion and the organic pyrylium cation. The obtained results demonstrate that Py‐FeCl4 dye is a good candidate for developing high‐pressure sensing technologies designed to function in extreme environments. Moreover, due to the inherent role of molecular‐structure relationships in the pyrylium salt's photophysical properties, findings suggest the potential discovery of piezochromic behavior in other pyrylium compounds.
Pressure-Induced Emission Enhancement and Piezochromism of Triphenylethylene

Abstract:Pressure-induced emission enhancement (PIEE) is a new phenomenon that has attracted widespread attention in the past few years for improving the solid-state emission efficiency of fluorophores. However, a thorny issue still remains in the study of PIEE. Thus, it is urgent and important to discover and design more PIEE systems for further enhancing the efficiency. In this paper, we found that triphenylethylene (TriPE) showed both conspicuous emission enhancement within the pressure range of 0.0-0.8 GPa and piezochromism behavior upon compression. More interestingly, infrared (IR) analysis indicated that ring-opening reaction of the phenyl ring occurred when pressure was beyond 14.2 GPa. Also, the ring-opening reaction of the phenyl ring led to irreversible optical changes. In situ high-pressure IR spectroscopy and angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the PIEE of TriPE was attributed to the related C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot C hydrogen bonds that could inhibit or restrict the movement of aromatic parts remarkably, restraining the energy loss by intramolecular motion. Our study provides insights into the significant effect of intermolecular interactions on fluorescence emission properties.

Abstract:Piezochromic materials, which show color changes resulting from mechanical grinding or external pressure, can be used as mechanosensors, indicators of mechano-history, security papers, optoelectronic devices, and data storage systems. A class of piezochromic materials with unprecedented two-photon absorptive and yellow emissive carbon dots (CDs) was developed for the first time. Applied pressure from 0-22.84 GPa caused a noticeable color change in the luminescence of yellow emissive CDs, shifting from yellow (557 nm) to blue-green (491 nm). Moreover, first-principles calculations support transformation of the sp2 domains into sp3 -hybridized domains under high pressure. The structured CDs generated were captured by quenching the high-pressure phase to ambient conditions, thus greatly increasing the choice of materials available for a variety of applications.

Abstract:Driven by the rapidly increasing demand for intelligent materials, the sensitivity of organic materials to pressure has been intensively investigated in recent years. Many examples describe material responses to both mechanical grinding and hydrostatic pressure, but only few materials have been identified with clear colour difference as well as strong penetrability, especially under high pressure, limiting development of pressure sensors. In this work, an asymmetric luminophore, MTBA was developed by end-capping a (Z)-3-(benzo[c][1,2,5]-thiadiazol-4-yl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile (TPAN) core with propeller-like triphenylamine (TPA) and rigid 12b-methyl-5,12b-dihydroindeno[1,2,3-kl]acridine (MeIAc) units, revealing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviour. In high-pressure and grinding experiments, MTBA exhibits a dramatically large colour difference of up to 164 nm and 112 nm in deep-red and near-infrared regions, respectively, for piezochromic performance that is among the best reports for pure organic materials. The experimental and theoretical analyses indicated that the excellent piezochromic performance of MTBA is due to its highly twisty and rigid conformation, which weakens intermolecular pi-pi interaction and obstructs emission quenching during compression.

Abstract:Piezochromism describes a tendency of certain materials changing colors when they are subjected to various pressure levels. It occurs particularly in some polymers or inorganic materials, such as in palladium complexes. However, piezochromism is generally believed to work at high pressure range of 0.1-10 GPa. This research work focused on unique piezochromism responses of the nanometer voids formed by the 5-20 nm inorganic ISOH nanometer powders. It was discovered that microstructures of the nanometer voids could change color at very low pressures of only 0.002-0.01 GPa; its sensitivity to pressure was increased by tens of times. It is believed that the uniform microstructures of nanometer powders contributed to the material's high sensitivity of piezochromic phenomena. One factor which quantum optical change caused by nanometer voids affected the quantum confinement effect; another is surface Plasmon Resonance of great difference dielectric property between conductive ITO powder and insulation hydroxide.

Abstract:Aggregation-enhanced emission active 9,10-bis(N-alkylcarbazol-2-yl-vinyl-2)anthracenes with changed length of N-alkyl chains (methyl, propyl, pentyl, and dodecyl) have been synthesized and their piezofluorochromic properties investigated. The results show that these homologues all exhibit remarkable piezofluorochromism with the pressing-induced spectral shifts of 36-45 nm, but the alkyl lengths do not affect significantly the fluorescence properties. The fluorescence emission changes induced by pressing can be restored by heat-annealing or solvent-fuming and regenerated by repressing. Powder wide-angle X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetric experiments reveal that the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states upon external stimuli is responsible for piezofluorochromic behavior.
