Abstract:A series of p-alkoxylbenzamides featuring a long alkyl chain have been synthesized and are readily to form stable gels in a variety of organic solvents. Their self-assembly properties and structure-property relationship were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The gels formed were multi-responsive to environmental stimuli such as temperature and fluoride anion. The results show that a combination of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and van der Waals interaction result in the aggregation of p-alkoxylbenzamides to form three-dimension networks, depending on the length of the long alkyl chain.

Abstract:Supramolecular organogels are soft materials comprised of low-molecular-mass organic gelators (LMOGs) and organic liquids. Owning to their unique supramolecular structures and potential applications, LMOGs have attracted wide attention from chemists and biochemists. A new "superorganogel" system based on dicarboxylic acids and primary alkyl amines (R-NH2) from the formation of organogels is achieved in various organic media including strong and weak polar solvents. The gelation properties of these gelators strongly rely on the molecular structure. Their aggregation morphology in the as-obtained organogels can be controlled by the solvent polarity and the tail chain length of R-NH2. Interestingly, flower-like self-assemblies can be obtained in organic solvents with medium polarity, such as tetrahydrofuran, pyridine and dichloromethane, when the gelators possess a suitable length of carbon chain. Moreover, further analyses of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and(1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveal that the intermolecular acid-base interaction and van der Waals interaction are critical driving forces in the process of organogelation. In addition, this kind of organogel system displays excellent mechanical properties and thermo-reversibility, and its forming mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:The gelation behaviors of binary organogels composed of aminobenzimidazole/benzothiazole derivatives and benzoic acid with single-/multialkyl substituent chain in various organic solvents were designed and investigated. Their gelation behaviors in 20 solvents were tested as new binary organic gelators. This showed that the number and length of alkyl substituent chains and benzimidazole/benzothiazole segment have played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of all gelator mixtures in various organic solvents. More alkyl chains in molecular skeletons in present gelators are favorable for the gelation of organic solvents. The length of alkyl substituent chains has also played an important role in changing the gelation behaviors and assembly states. Morphological studies revealed that the gelator molecules self-assemble into different aggregates from wrinkle, lamella, belt, to fiber with change of solvents. Spectral studies indicated that there existed different H-bond formation and hydrophobic force, depending on benzimidazole/benzothiazole segment and alkyl substituent chains in molecular skeletons. The prepared nanostructured materials have wide perspectives and many potential applications in nanoscience and material fields due to their scientific values. The present work may also give new clues for designing new binary organogelators and soft materials.

Abstract:Herein, we report a class of distinctive supramolecular nanostructures in situ-generated from the cationic ring-opening polymerization of a particular 2-oxazoline monomer, i.e., 2-(N-tert-butyloxycarbonylaminomethyl)-2-oxazoline (Ox1). Driven by side-chain hydrogen bonding between neighboring molecules and van der Waals interactions, the growing oligomers of Ox1 precipitate in the form of macroscopic platelets when the degree of polymerization reaches 5-7. A similar self-assembly occurred in the block copolymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (EtOx) or 2-pentyl-2-oxazoline (PeOx) and Ox1 as the second monomer. These polymeric aggregates were found to disassemble into rod-like nanoparticles under appropriate conditions, and to form stable organogels in some polar solvents like dimethylformamide as well as in natural liquid fragrances such as (R)-carvone, citronellal, and (R)-limonene. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the morphology of their xerogels was solvent-dependent, mainly with a lamellar or fibrous structure. The rheology measurements confirmed the as-obtained organogels feature an obvious thixotropic character. The storage modulus was about 7-10 times higher than the loss modulus, indicating the physical crosslinking in the gel. The fragrance release profiles showed that the presented supramolecular gel system exhibits good sustained-release effect for the loaded bioactive volatiles.

Abstract:Four 2,5-dialkoxylphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles are shown to be efficient organogelators. These compounds readily form stable gels in many organic solvents and their gelation property as well as supramolecular structures were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). The results indicate that the gelator molecules self-assemble into gels with elongated fibrous networks and layer structures, and van der Waals interaction is the main driving force.

Abstract:We reported here the gelation behaviors of two-component organogel system based on different acids and aminobenzothiazole derivatives in various organic solvents. Their gelation behaviors in 20 solvents were tested as new organic gelators. It was shown that the molecular skeletons and substituted groups in these compounds played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of the mixtures. Only the binary mixture of 2-aminobenzothiazole and trigonal 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid with aromatic core could form organogels in ethanol and acetone. Morphological observations reveal that the microstructures of both xerogels showed similar wrinkle-shaped domains composed of sheet-like aggregates with many holes. Spectral studies reveal the hydrogen bonding interaction between the amide of the gelator and lamellar-like structure of the aggregates in both gels. The present investigation is a perspective to provide new clues for the design of new nanomaterials and functional textile materials with special microstructures.

Abstract:Amphiphilic diblock codendrimers consisting of dendrons of hydroxyl-containing poly(methallyl dichloride) (PMDC) and long alkyl-containing poly(urethane amide) (PUA) were synthesized in different generations. These codendrimers were found to self-assemble into ribbonlike aggregates in organic solvent and further formed three-dimensional networks and behaved macroscopically as gels. The width of the self-assembled ribbons decreases with the generation of both dendritic blocks. Multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds between amide and hydroxyl groups were found to be the main driving force to form these self-assembled gels.

Abstract:A series of low-molecular-mass organogelators (LMOGs), dimeric dendrons based on natural amino acids, glycine. and aspartic acid, with different aliphatic spacers have been synthesized and their self-assembly behavior and structure-property relationship have been studied. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were employed to characterize the self-assembled structures and to examine the effect of the length of aliphatic spacers on the gelation. It was found that all of the gels were thermoreversible and stable for more than half a year at room temperature. The dimeric dendrons with longer aliphatic spacers displayed enhanced gelation ability. The SAXS patterns of the xerogels G2SnG2 (n = 6, 8, and 10) showed periodical reflections that could be attributed to the formation of a hexagonal columnar phase, whereas G2S15G2 formed a lamellar structure. Hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions were evidenced by IR and fluorescence spectroscopy with pyrene as a probe, respectively. Moreover, the compounds G2SnG2 not only acted as efficient organogelators but also self-organized into thermotropic liquid crystal, with the mesophase formation being correlated to the spacer length.

Abstract:We demonstrate the construction of three-dimensional graphene oxide based gel networks through the self-assembly of a series of amphiphilic molecules, which possess a polar carbohydrate headgroup attached to a nonpolar pyrene group. The gelation process can occur in both aqueous and organic solutions and be influenced by the gelators' molecular structure. The driving forces for the gelation process were determined as pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding interaction by using fluorescence and infrared spectroscopies. Rheometry was used to investigate the mechanical properties of the hydrogels and the organogels. The hydrogel was investigated to be applied to remove dye from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Nonamphiphilic, hydrogen-bonded hydrazide foldamers appended with four or six long flexible chains were revealed to spontaneously assemble to form vesicles in methanol and organogels in aliphatic hydrocarbons. SEM, AFM, TEM, DLS, and fluorescence microscopy were all used to identify the structures of the vesicles. It was proposed that intermolecular pi stacking of the folded frameworks and hydrogen bonding of the amide units in the appended chains induced the molecules to produce cylindrical aggregates. In polar methanol, these aggregates packed together to generate one-layered vesicles owing to hydrophobically induced entanglement of the peripheral chains, while in nonpolar hydrocarbons, the peripheral chains entwined across stacked cylinders to form three-dimensional networks and thus immobilize the liquid molecules.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis and self-assembly of a new series of compounds containing a hydrazide unit in the rigid core and three alkoxy chains with varying lengths. The compounds N-(3,4,5-cetyloxybenzoyl)-N'-(4'-nitrobenzoyl) hydrazine (C16) and N-(3,4,5-dodecyloxybenzoyl)N'-( 4'-nitrobenzoyl) hydrazine (C12) exhibited stable columnar phase and strong gelation ability in several apolar organic solvents. The columnar structure was found both in the liquid crystalline state and in the xerogels by wide-angle X- ray diffraction analysis. SEM and TEM images revealed that the molecules self-assembled into twist fibrous aggregates in the xerogels. FT-IR and H-1 NMR studies confirmed that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions were the major driving force for the formation of self-assembling both the liquid crystals and gels processes. Further detailed analysis of their aggregation modes were conducted by FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurement.

Abstract:A new low molecular mass organic gelator (LMOG) bearing 1,3,4-oxadiazole and azobenzene groups, namely N-(3,4,5-octanoxyphenyl)-N'-4-[(4-hydroxyphenyl) azophenyl] 1,3,4-oxadiazole (AOB-t8), was designed and synthesized. The organogelator has shown great ability to gel a variety of organic solvents to form stable organogels with the critical gelation concentration as low as 5.0 x 10(-4) M and, therefore, can be considered a supergelator. It has been demonstrated that the aggregation morphology and surface wettability produced by organogels strongly depend on the nature of gelling solvents. A structure of uptwisting fibers on the substrate and superhydrophobicity were observed in the xerogel formed from 1,2-dichloroethane. The wettability of the xerogel could also be tuned by applying a sol-gel process with different solvents. Cooperation of hydrogen bonding, pi-pi interaction, and Van der Waals force are suggested to be the main contribution for this self-assembled structure. The unique and tunable surface properties such as superhydrophobicity distinguish the obtained organogels as a novel class of functional materials.

Textured spheroid-like morphologies were observed in the xerogels from low polar aromatic solvents such as benzene, whereas fibrous morphologies from ethanol. Further detailed analysis of their aggregation modes was conducted by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction measurement. The cooperation of hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions and the van der Waals interactions should to be the key point of the self-assembly.

Abstract:Cyclo(L-Tyr-L-Lys) ( 1) and its 3-amino derivatives (2a-2g) were synthesized and investigated as organo- and hydrogelators. Although 1 precipitates in water, it enables the gelation of a number of polar organic solvents including DMF and DMSO. Ultrasound promotes 1 to form a hydrogel when cooling its aqueous solution. Even at 56 degrees C the hydrogelation still occurs when its concentration reaches 1.5 wt% under the assist of sonication. Moreover, after N-acylation of 1 with alkyl carboxylic acids and anhydrides, 2a-2g exhibit chain length dependent hydrogelation ability. 2a-2c with short alkyl tails yield hydrogels at around 1.0 wt%. Rheological results showed that a robust thermoreversible hydrogel is created from 2b at 2.5 wt%. The self-assembled fibrillar networks in the gels were distinctly evidenced by TEM and SEM observations. H-1 NMR analyses suggested that intermolecular hydrogen-bonding between diketopiperazine rings plays an essential role in the self-aggregation of these gelators. Based on X-ray powder diffraction data, a possible molecular packing model was deduced for the xerogel of 1. Also the interdigitated bilayer structure was proposed for the self-assembly of 2a-2g in ethanol.

Abstract:Novel bolaamphiphilic gelators on the basis of L-glutamic acid, which use rigid aromatic substituents together with different lengths of alkyl chains as spacers, were synthesized. Depending on the structure, some of the molecules can gel a broad variety of solvents, from hexane to water/methanol mixture. The corresponding gels were characterized with UV-vis, CD, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nanofiber structures were obtained in nearly all the organogels. The results revealed that the introduction of the aromatic ring as well as the variation of alkyl spacer length greatly changes the gelation property and the corresponding gel structures. In pure organic solvents, the hydrogen bonding from amide groups play an important role and the even-odd alkyl chain can affect the gelating and self-assembly. In water/methanol, bolaamphiphiles with odd number methylene units can also form gels with strong π–π stacking working as the driving force. A possible model was proposed to explain the different self-assembly properties of the bolaamphiphiles.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and self-assembly of a new pi-conjugated dichalcone substituted carbazole-based low molecular mass organogelator. It could form stable gels in most halogen-aromatic solvents. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the gel formed fibrous structures with diameter of 50-100 nm, which consisted of several thinner fibers. The FT-IR, UV-vis and XRD results suggested that the H-bonds and pi-pi interactions were the main driving forces for the formation of the self-assembled gel, in which the U-shaped molecules were stacked into lamellar structures. The fluorescent spectra showed that the emission of the xerogel red-shifted markedly compared with the sol state, which resulted from the aggregation of the molecules.

Abstract:Main-chain liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) have been widely investigated due to the excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. In addition, hydrogen bond has been utilized to construct peptide supramolecular organogels by bottom-up approach but rarely to fabricate other supramolecular polymeric gels. In this work, some main-chain polymers with different proportion of pendent amide group have been designed and synthesized by melt polycondensation. The relationship between the liquid crystalline property and the proportion of amide group has been investigated by DSC and WAXD. Interestingly, among these polymers, the smectic main-chain LCP P-100 with the highest molar ratio of amide group displays the best gelation ability with a minimum gelation concentration (MGC) of 2 wt% in THF. The hydrogen bond has been proved to be one of the most important driving forces for the gelation by NMR technique. The organogels exhibit good self-supporting ability with a storage modulus higher than 10(4) Pa when the gelator concentration is more than 4 wt%. At last, a hairpin model has been proposed to illustrate the microstructure for these organogels. These robust polymeric organogels that have been synthesized by bottom-up approach using hydrogen bond broaden the applications for main-chain LCPs ranging from actuators to electro-optical devices.

Abstract:Four cyanostyryl-substituted carbazole derivatives (CN-ODEC1, CN-ODEC2, CN-DDEC1, and CN-DDEC) were synthesized and their self-assembly properties have been studied. It was found that they could form organogels especially in aromatic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy images show that the xerogels formed from monosubstituted derivatives (CN-O/DDEC1) gave well-organized tapes, and those from disubstituted derivatives (CN-O/DDEC2) exhibited heavy entangled three-dimensional structures. The UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, as well as X-ray diffraction patterns, suggest that carbazole derivatives underwent J-type π-stacking. Meanwhile, we suggested that strong H-bonding and moderate π–π interactions were the key driving force for the gelation of the monosubstituted derivatives, and head-to-tail “ladder-type” J-aggregates were formed in the gel state. On the other hand, strong π–π interaction might be considered as the main driving force for the gelation of disubstituted derivatives, and J-aggregates with no well-organized packing mode of molecules were obtained in the gel phase. It should be noticed that aggregation-induced emission was observed during the gelation processes.
