Abstract:Bi1.04-xYxFeO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.30) ceramics are synthesized by a tartaric acid modified sol—gel method starting with aqueous solutions of Bi(NO3)3, Fe(NO3)3, Y(NO3)3, and tartaric acid (sintering at 600 °C for 2 h and 700 °C for 30 min).

Abstract:BiFeO 3 was synthesized using a modified sol–gel process, i.e., so-called Pechini method, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction pattern. Optimal conditions for the synthesis of single-phase BiFeO3 ceramics were obtained. This Pechini technique developed in this work is expected to be useful in synthesis of doped BiFeO 3 or BiFeO 3 -based solid solution. Conventional sintering and spark plasma sintering processes were used to fabricate BiFeO 3 ceramics. Ferroelectric and magnetic loops were measured at room temperature. The ceramic sample shows a stable dielectric constant and low loss tangent between 100 Hz and 10 MHz.
Effect of Yttrium Doping on the Structure, Dielectric Multiferroic and Magnetodielectric Properties of Bi5Ti3FeO15 Ceramics

Abstract:Multiferroic Bi5−xYxTi3FeO15 (BYTF-x, x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) ceramics were synthesized through the conventional solid-state reaction. The structure, dielectric, multiferroic and magnetodielectric properties of BYTF-x were investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction confirmed that all the samples were layered Aurivillius structure. Upon increasing Y content, the grain size of samples slightly decreases. The dielectric permittivity increased with Y doped. The Y doping has no effect on microstructural changes of plate-like grains which verified though field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The minimum remanent polarization (2Pr = 2.48 μc/cm2) was observed in BYTF-0.3 ceramic and the maximum magnetodielectric coefficient value of 1.23% was obtained in BYTF-0.3 ceramic perhaps result from the coexistence of Fe2+ and Fe3+. Additionally, weak ferromagnetic is only found in BYTF-0.3 ceramic. The ferromagnetism can be attributed to ferromagnetic double exchange interactions (Fe2+–O–Fe3+) and the spin canting of tilting FeO6 octahedra via the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. These results indicate that Y doping Aurivillius phase may be the potential candidates for exploring superior room-temperature multiferroics.

Abstract:Multiferroic ceramics, (1-x) BiFeO3-xBa(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (BF-xBaFN), with x ranging from 0.1 to 0.6, were prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction analyses indicates a rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure (R3c space group) of BiFeO3 for x = 0.1 and cubic-like perovskite structure for x = 0.2-0.6. Significant magnetic enhancements were discovered in the BF-xBaFN ceramics. Ferromagnetic loops revealed the maximum remanent magnetization of 1.61 emu/g of BF-xBaFN with x =0.25. Crystal Structure, Leakage Conduction Mechanism Evolution and Enhanced Multiferroic Properties in Y-doped BiFeO3 Ceramics

Abstract:Ceramics of pure phase Yttrium (Y) doped BiFeO3 prepared by a solid-state sintering route were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, magnetic and electrical measurements. The results and analysis show that Y substitution greatly reduces the leakage current and enhances the multiferroic properties of BiFeO3. Leakage conduction mechanism is shown to change from space-charge-limited conduction type in pure BiFeO3 to a Poole–Frenkel emission behavior in Bi0.90Y0.10FeO3. A Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism in Bi0.95Y0.05FeO3 ceramic is also evidenced under high electric fields. At the same time, enhanced magnetic properties due to Y-doping are confirmed by temperature dependent magnetometry and supported by Raman spectroscopy. An unexpected and sharp switching behavior in the magnetization under low magnetic fields observed in Bi0.90Y0.10FeO3 ceramic, together with its improved ferroelectric property, may trigger such system for promising magneto-electric applications.

Abstract:Powders and ceramics of Bi1 xDyxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25) have been successfully synthesized by a modified solid state method. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refine of the ceramics illustrate a rhombohedral-to-orthorhombic phase transition at x = 0.10. Two types of structural phases were found to coexist with increasing the Dy content from x = 0.10 to x = 0.25. The magnetic study confirmed that the A-site Dy-doping would induce a weak ferromagnetic behavior, and the ferroelectric properties also showed its correlation with structural evolution. Abstract:Insulated Bi1-xDyxFeO3 (x = 0-0.2) were prepared to study their multiferroic properties at various temperatures. Bi1-xDyxFeO3 (x = 0-0.08) shows rhombohedral phase, ferroelectric polarization of >18 mu C/cm(2), and piezoelectric d(33) value of >35 pC/N at room temperature. After the polarized ceramics were annealed at various high temperatures, the piezoelectric d(33) changes suggest that ferroelectric component exists below 700 degrees C. There are ferroelectric phase and PZT-like anti-polar orthorhombic phase together in Bi1-xDyxFeO3 (x = 0.11-0.17), although only ferroelectric phase contributes polarization and d(33) which decreases with Dy concentration at this two-phase coexistence region. Finally, Bi1-xDyxFeO3 (x = 0.2) transforms to non-polar orthorhombic phase according to structural and electric measurements. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Bi1-xYxFeO3 films with varying x from 0 to 0.30 were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on surface oxidized Si (100) substrates with LaNiO3 as buffer layer. The influence of Y doping on the structure, ferroelectric properties, and exchange bias have been systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies revealed the structural transition from rhombohedral R3c to orthorhombic Pn2(1)a with increasing x above 0.10. The leakage current density of BiFeO3 has been effectively suppressed by Y doping, and well saturated P-E loops have been observed in Bi1-xYxFeO3 (0.01 <= x <= 0.07). Exchange bias field with a 3.6 nm thick NiFe layer increases with increasing x to 0.01, then decreases with further increasing x. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Yttrium-modified Bi7Fe1.5Co1.5Ti3O21 Aurivillius phase oxides were synthesized using a modified Pechini method, and their multiferroic properties were investigated as a function of the Y content in the formula Bi7−xYxFe1.5Co1.5Ti3O21. X-ray diffraction investigation suggests the formation of a pure Aurivillius phase when the Y content is less than 1.25, and a Co-doped BiFeO3 impurity appears when the content exceeds 1.25. When the Y content is 1.25, the sample exhibits significantly improved room temperature multiferroic properties with a remanent polarization 2Pr of 11.72 μC cm−2 and a remanent magnetization 2Mr of 3.2 emu g−1. Derivative thermo-magneto-gravimetry measurement indicates that the measured magnetic properties mainly originate intrinsically from the Y-modified Aurivillius phases when the Y content is less than 1.25.

Abstract:We report our studies on the multiferroic orders in 0.5BiFeO(3)-0.5Bi(0.5)K-0.5TiO3 (0.5BF-0.5BT) in this paper. The XRD pattern in the powdered form suggests a pseudocubic phase on average, with a lattice parameter of similar to 3.9572 angstrom. However, the bulk sample shows a coexistence of pseudocubic and tetragonal phases. The dielectric anomaly is relaxor-like, with the Burns temperature (T-B) of similar to 760 K. The remnant polarization (P-r, 4.02-4.25 mu C/cm(2)) is nearly unchanged in the temperature range of 298 K and 398 K. In addition, the normalized strain coefficient (d x 33) increases on heating, from 100 pm/V at 298 K up to 240 pm/V at 453 K. On the other side, two anomalies were confirmed in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities. The high-temperature anomaly is related to a transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states around similar to 143 K. The low-temperature anomaly around similar to 5.5 K might hint the onset of the magnetic spin glass state. We believe that some common features should be present in (Bi(x)A(1-x)) (Fe0.5B0.5)O-3 (A cations are not ferroelectric active while B cations are not magnetic active).

Abstract:Dense Bi ( Fe 1/2 Cr 1/2) O 3 ceramics with R3c crystal structure were synthesized by solid-state reaction under high pressure. Transmission electron microscope observations revealed an incommensurable superstructure along 〈110〉 direction. Magnetization measurements indicated a transition to a cooperative magnetic state below ~130 K. Dielectric properties of Bi ( Fe 1/2 Cr 1/2) O 3 showed a dielectric constant anomaly located at ~140 K indicating the giant dielectric relaxation in multiferroic Bi ( Fe 1/2 Cr 1/2) O 3 compound, which can be explained by the enhanced conductivity and possible Maxwell–Wagner contribution. Large dielectric frequency dispersion was observed at 140–185 K, and was supposed to be a thermal activated intrinsic process.

Abstract:A simple and effective method that solid state reaction followed by quenching process is developed to prepare multiferroic La-substituted BiFeO3 (Bi1-xLaxFeO3 (BLFOx) with x=0-0.40) ceramics. X-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma studies show that the ceramics prepared under the optimized conditions are single phase. A phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase is observed near x=0.30. This transition has great effects on the multiferroic properties. Magnetic and electric measurements reveal that the BLFO0.30 has enhanced multiferroic properties with two times remnant magnetization and polarization of 0.041 emu/g and 22.4 mu C/cm(2), respectively. The enhanced multiferroic properties are attributed to the enhanced magnetoelectric interaction, which results from the La substitution-induced destruction of the spin cycloid. These results show that BiFeO3-based perovskite solid solution with no other ferroelectric end member can have improved multiferroic properties via enhancing magnetoelectric interaction. This work may provide some guidelines for further study on BiFeO3 and BiFeO3-based solid solutions. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
Tailoring Bi1 -x-y Ba x Fe y FeO 3 for desired properties: insights into structural, dielectric, and magnetic responses

Abstract:In present study, samples of Bi1-x-yBaxFeyFeO3 have been synthesized, where x = 0.15, y = 0; x = 0.10, y = 0.10; and x = 0.15, y = 0.10 utilizing a swift two-stage solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data has been Rietveld refined to evaluate the structural parameters. Micro-strain is also calculated using Williamson Hall method. Temperature (300 K to 660 K) dependent measurements of the dielectric constant have been conducted at various frequencies (100 kHz, 500 kHz, and 1000 kHz). The dielectric constant (ε') rises as the temperature increases. Two dielectric anomalies around 450 K and 613 K have been noticed in ε' versus T curves for all the samples which might be related with defect dipoles and the magnetic transition respectively. Further, an insignificant value of loss tangent (0.2) specifically at around 300 K is a signal of small leakage current in the samples. The source of high dielectric constant is discussed by considering the structural distortions in the ceramics. A clear hysteresis loop has been observed for all the samples which is a sign of collapse of antiferromagnetic nature of BiFeO3. Further, in case of co-doped samples, almost a saturation in magnetization with magnetization value 5.9718 emu/g has been noticed in hysteresis curve indicating a major contribution of ferromagnetic interaction. Enhancement in the net magnetization is briefly discussed by considering the ferromagnetic type direct interaction among Fe3+ ions and suppressing the anti-ferromagnetic type super exchange interaction. Abstract:In order to develop multiferroics with large magnetization and polarization, we have prepared the (1−x)BiFeO3–xDyFeO3 (BF-DF) solid solution and systematically studied its properties. A morphotropic phase transition from rhombohedral perovskite (R3c) to orthorhombic orthoferrite (Pbnm) was found at x around 0.1. The magnetic properties of BiFeO3 were improved by the introduction of Dy3+ on the perovskite A site. Chemically modified Bi0.9Dy0.1Fe1−xTixO3+x/2 ceramics by aliovalent ionic substitution of Ti4+ for Fe3+ with excess Bi2O3 exhibit weak ferromagnetism and a typical ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a large remnant polarization of 23 μC/cm2 at room temperature and a large saturated magnetization (Ms=0.5 μB/f.u.) at 2 K. These properties entitle the BF-DF solid solution one of few multiferroic materials that exhibit both decent magnetization and electric polarization.

Abstract:We report on the structural, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Fe doped Ba0.95Bi0.05TiO3 (Ba0.95Bi0.05Ti1−yFeyO3 (0 ≤ y ≤ 0.1)) ceramics prepared by solid state reaction. Rietveld analysis shows that compounds with y ≤ 0.07 have a single phase-tetragonal structure (space group P4mm), and the tetragonality (c/a) decreases as x increases. Ba0.95Bi0.05Ti0.93Fe0.07O3 ceramic shows ferromagnetic order with a Curie temperature of about 700 K and ferroelectric order at room temperature. These results indicate that the Ba0.95Bi0.05Ti0.93Fe0.07O3 can be useful as a multiferroic material.

Abstract:The solid solution of (1-x)BiFeO3-xDyFeO3 was prepared by solidstate reactions in the form of ceramics. The effects of chemicalmodification by means of aliovalent ionic substitution of Ti4+ forFe3+ on the structure and dielectric properties were investigated. Amorphotropic phase boundary bridging the perovskite rhombohedral phase andthe orthoferrite orthorhombic phase was identified at x around 0.1. Thechemical modification was found to stabilize the perovsite phase. Thedielectric performance of the solid solution was improved by thesubstitution of Ti4+ for Fe3+, which decreased the electricconductivity by reducing oxygen vacancies, as evidenced by the decrease inloss tangent values. Magnetic hysteresis and large saturated magnetization(0.5 μB/f.u.) were realized in 0.92BiFeO3-0.08DyFeO3with 2% substitution of Ti4+ for Fe3+, which is believed toarise from the disruption of the spiral spin modulation after structuralmodification, and the interaction between the spins of the Dy3+ andFe3+ at low temperatures which decouples the antiferromagnetic orderbetween the Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Single‐phase and lead‐free Bi0.85La0.15FeO3 multiferroic ceramics were prepared by a rapid liquid sintering method to study their crystal structure and multiferroic behaviors. Rietveld refinement of X‐ray diffraction data showed a pseudo‐cubic structure plus a small triclinic distortion. The absence of Fe2+ ions suggested few oxygen vacancies. Large polarizations of 20.3 μC/cm2 together with a piezoelectric d33 coefficient of ∼27.7 pC/N were achieved. This ferroelectricity originates from the stereochemical activity of the A‐site Bi3+ lone electron pair. The remnant magnetizations of 0.0744–0.227 emu/g of Bi0.85La0.15FeO3 permitted by the canting angle of canted antiferromagnetic order was released as a result of the collapse of the space‐modulated spin structure of BiFeO3. The observed dielectric anomalies proved the magnetoelectric couplings between ferroelectric order and canted antiferromagnetic order.
The development of BiFeO3-based ceramics

Abstract:Abstract The multiferroic properties of BiFeO3-based ceramics were improved through optimizing their sintering method and doping with certain rare earth elements in pure BiFeO3. Some methods, especially liquid-phase sintering method has largely decreased the densities of oxygen vacancies and Fe2+ in BiFeO3-based ceramics, and thus their resistivity became high enough to measure the saturated polarization and the large piezoelectric d 33 coefficient under the high electric field of >150 kV/cm. Besides, multiferroic properties were improved through the rare earth elements’ doping in pure BiFeO3. Magnetization commonly increases with the proportional increase of Nd, La, Sm and Dy contents up to ~30 %, while ferroelectric phase can transform to paraelectric phase at a certain proportion. An improved magnetoelectric coupling was often observed at ferroelectric phase with a relatively large proportion. Besides, an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient is expected in BiFeO3-based ceramics with morphotropic phase boundaries as they are already observed in thin epitaxial BiFeO3 films.

Abstract:Multiferroic ceramics were prepared and characterized in (1-x)BiFeO3-x(0.5CaTiO(3)-0.5SmFeO(3)) system by a standard solid-state reaction process. The structure evolution was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum analyses. The refinement results confirmed the different phase assemblages with varying amounts of polar rhombohedral R3c and nonpolar orthorhombic Pbnm as a function of the substitution content. In the compositions range of 0.2x0.5, polar R3c and nonpolar Pbnm coexisted, which was referred to polar-to-nonpolar morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). According to the dielectric and DSC analysis results, the ceramics with x0.2 changed to diffused ferroelectric, and the ferroelectric properties were enhanced significantly. Two dielectric relaxations were detected in the temperature range of 200-300 K and 500-700 K, respectively. The high-temperature dielectric relaxation was attributed to the grain-boundary effects. While the low temperature dielectric relaxation obtained in the samples with x=0.3-0.5 was related to the charge transfer between Fe2+ and Fe3+. The magnetic hysteresis loops measured at different temperature indicated the enhanced magnetic properties in the present ceramics, which could be attributed to the suppressed cycloidal spin magnetic structure by Ti ions. In addition, the rare-earth Sm spin moments might also affect the magnetic properties at relatively lower temperature.

Abstract:The search for multiferroic materials with ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature continues to be driven by the prospect of new devices. In this paper, Ba2+-Ti4+ co-doped Y1-x (Ba0.5Ti0.5) x FeO3 were prepared by a traditional solid-state reaction method. The ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism of the co-doped ceramics have been enhanced simultaneously with the maximum polarization of 0.48 μC/cm2 and the maximum magnetization of 3.25emu/g, the switched charge density (0.26 μC/cm2) measured by PUND tests indicating the intrinsic and switchable remanent polarization. The increase of Fe2+ content (increased to 28% with the increase of doping content) caused by Ba2+-Ti4+ co-doping destroys the antiferromagnetic ground state, and the doping strategy enlarges the tilt angle of oxygen octahedron from 144.93° to 148.63°. The magnetic domain switches caused by the external electric field were directly observed by magnetic force microscopy, indicating the modulation of magnetic domain by polarization at room temperature. This work may provide useful information for the structural design and performance improvement of multiferroic materials.

Abstract:Dielectric and ferroelectric properties of Y3−xBixFe5O12 ceramics were extensively investigated. All the samples show a low temperature dielectric relaxation which originates from the charge carrier hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+ and a high temperature dielectric relaxation which is associated with conduction. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and the activation energy of the hopping process between Fe2+ and Fe3+ of Y3-xBixFe5O12 ceramics decrease with increasing Bi substitution. The conductivity decreases and the remanent polarization increases as the amount of Bi increases.
