Abstract:A mild mannered reaction: An ideal addition of "inert" aryl Ci-H bonds to Cï£N groups has been achieved in the absence of any additives and without any undesirable by-products (see scheme). Abstract:Direct aryl C-H addition to aryl aldehydes to produce biaryl methanols was reported via Rh catalysis with an N-containing directing group. The method is highly atom-, step-, and redox-economic. The procedure is robust, reliable, and compatible with water and air.

Abstract:The transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric variant of the title reaction is normally limited to N-protected isatins. However, Rh(I)/chiral sulfoxide phosphine complexes were found to catalyze the enantioselective addition of arylboronic acids to NH isatins under mild conditions. A variety of chiral 3-aryl-3-hydroxyl-2-oxindoles were obtained with high yields and with good to excellent enantioselectivities (85–92% ee).

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A detailed investigation is presented to understand the catalytic pathway of our recently reported Rh(III)-catalyzed N-tosylaldimine insertion into aryl C-H bonds. Herein, the key intermediates were isolated and determined by X-ray crystallography of their single crystals. The kinetic characterization of each factor in this catalytic reaction was conducted. The studies indicate that N-tosyl aldimine insertion into the C-Rh bonds rather than C-H bond activation or protonolysis is the rate-determining step. These mechanistic insights have significant implications for the development of a more efficient catalytic reaction system to realize the addition of C-H bonds to normal aldehydes and ketones, to achieve sp(3) C-H bond activation, and to implement asymmetric catalysis in the near future.

Abstract:A highly efficient asymmetric arylation of cyclic N-sulfonyl aldimines with arylboronic acids catalyzed by a rhodium/sulfur-olefin ligand complex under mild conditions is described. A wide range 4-aryl-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzoxathiazine 2,2-dioxides were obtained in extremely high yields (93-99%) and high enantiomeric purities (97-99% ee).

Abstract:We report herein an iridium-catalyzed activation of pyridine C-H bond and its nucleophilic addition to benzaldehydes. The reaction was applicable to various pyridine derivatives and aryl aldehydes. In contrast to most methods that selectively functionalize the C2 pyridine C-H bond, this reaction proceeded with unusual meta-selectivity. An independently synthesized silyl iridium complex was able to catalyze the reaction, indicating that a silyl iridium intermediate might be responsible for the novel reactivity and the unusual selectivity.

Abstract:A rhodium(III)-catalyzed direct C-H alkynylation of a wide range of N-methylsulfoximines with (bromoethynyl)triisopropylsilane has been developed. This protocol is compatible with both (S,S)-diaryl sulfoximines and (S,S)-alkyl aryl sulfoximines, and shows mild conditions, and good functional group tolerance. The synthetic utility of this method has been demonstrated by subsequent various transformations of the products.

Abstract:An efficient and broadly applicable rhodium-catalyzed direct ortho-arylation of anilines with aryl iodides relying on readily available aminophosphines as traceless directing groups is reported. Its scope and functional group compatibility were both found to be quite broad as a large variety of both aminophosphines and (hetero)aryl iodides, including complex ones, could be utilized. The ortho-arylated anilines could be obtained in high average yields, without any competing diarylation and with full regioselectivity, which constitutes a major step forward compared to other processes. The reaction is moreover not limited to aryl iodides, as an aryl bromide and a triflate could be successfully used, and could be extended to diarylation. Mechanistic studies revealed the key and unique role of the aminophosphine, acting not only as a substrate but also as a ligand for the rhodium catalyst.
