Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp(3)) - H bond aminocarbonylation of 8-methylquinolines and isocyanates has been realized under mild conditions. This approach is applicable to different aryl and alkyl isocyanates, leading to the synthesis of various alpha-quinolinyl amide compounds in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible mechanism for this transformation is proposed according to the experimental results obtained.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A detailed investigation is presented to understand the catalytic pathway of our recently reported Rh(III)-catalyzed N-tosylaldimine insertion into aryl C-H bonds. Herein, the key intermediates were isolated and determined by X-ray crystallography of their single crystals. The kinetic characterization of each factor in this catalytic reaction was conducted. The studies indicate that N-tosyl aldimine insertion into the C-Rh bonds rather than C-H bond activation or protonolysis is the rate-determining step. These mechanistic insights have significant implications for the development of a more efficient catalytic reaction system to realize the addition of C-H bonds to normal aldehydes and ketones, to achieve sp(3) C-H bond activation, and to implement asymmetric catalysis in the near future.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed tandem dehydrogenative [4 + 2] annulation of terminal olefins with N-sulfonyl amides via C(sp2)-H activation, allylic C(sp3)-H activation, and homoallylic C(sp3)-H elimination processes has been developed. Promoted by the DMSO ligand, various benzamides, heterocyclic arylamides, alkenyl carboxamides, and commercial olefins are found to be efficient substrates to construct important heterocyclic compounds bearing a vinyl substituent with high E stereoselectivity. Using air as the terminal oxidant also provides a great advantage regarding environmental friendliness.

Abstract:The direct transition-metal-catalyzed addition of C–H bonds to unsaturated C=X (X=C, O, and N) bonds via C–H bond activation has been recognized as a powerful tool for the construction of C–C bonds (in terms of atom and step economy). Herein, the direct rhodium-catalyzed C–H bond addition of aromatic ketones to allylic alcohols and α,β-unsaturated ketones that afford β-aryl carbonyl compounds is described, in which a ketone carbonyl acts as a weakly coordinating directing group. It was found that the type of alkyl in aromatic ketones is crucial for the success of the reaction. This transformation provides a convenient and efficient methodology for the synthesis of 2-alkyl aromatic ketones in moderate-to-excellent yields.

However, Rh(I)/chiral sulfoxide phosphine complexes were found to catalyze the enantioselective addition of arylboronic acids to NH isatins under mild conditions. Abstract:A highly efficient asymmetric arylation of cyclic N-sulfonyl aldimines with arylboronic acids catalyzed by a rhodium/sulfur-olefin ligand complex under mild conditions is described. A wide range 4-aryl-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzoxathiazine 2,2-dioxides were obtained in extremely high yields (93-99%) and high enantiomeric purities (97-99% ee).

Abstract:A rhodium(III)-catalyzed direct C-H alkynylation of a wide range of N-methylsulfoximines with (bromoethynyl)triisopropylsilane has been developed. This protocol is compatible with both (S,S)-diaryl sulfoximines and (S,S)-alkyl aryl sulfoximines, and shows mild conditions, and good functional group tolerance. The synthetic utility of this method has been demonstrated by subsequent various transformations of the products.

Abstract:Described herein is the development of an unprecedented approach to direct amination of unstrained aryl-ketone Csp2–Csp2 sigma bonds with sulfonylazides via Rh(III)-catalyzed Csp2–Csp2 cleavage. This methodology provides an efficient strategy for acyl groups/amino groups switch at the C2-position of indoles in a straightforward fashion. Abstract:Novel C-C bond cleavage of secondary alcohols through Rh(III)-catalyzed beta-carbon elimination directed by a pyridinyl group is reported. A five-membered rhodacycle is proposed as a key intermediate, which undergoes further alkenylation with various olefins. This novel transformation shows high efficiency along with excellent selectivity in mild conditions. A wide range of functionalities are compatible. This study offers a new strategy to carry out C-C bond activation.

Abstract:The chiral binaphthol-catalyzed enantioselective conjugate addition of alkenylboronic acids and heteroarylboronic acids to cyclic N-sulfonyl ketimines is reported, providing the 1,4-addition products in high yields and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee). This mild, scalable catalytic system exhibits high efficiency and broad substrate scopes. Additionally, arylboronic acids were viable nucleophiles under more forcing conditions.
