Abstract:The design and development of an extraordinarily interesting new class of chiral sulfur-olefin hybrid ligands with remarkable structural simplicity were described. These unique sulfinamide-olefin ligands have been proved to be highly effective ligands in rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions of aryl boronic acids to alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (up to 99% yield and 98% ee).

Abstract:A class of chiral sulfoxide–olefins were designed and synthesized through concise routes. Their applications as ligands in Hayashi–Miyaura reaction were studied, which found that vinyl substituents of the ligands vary in stereocontrolling ability. Particularly, either isomer of adducts with excellent ees could be readily obtained through changing the position of the substituents of olefins as well as changing the configuration of the CC bond of the ligands. Meanwhile, the substrate scope of arylboronic acids and alkenes was clearly shown.

Abstract:A novel type of highly efficient chiral C2-symmetric bipyridine-N,N'-dioxides ligands prepared from L-octahydroindole-2-carboxylic acid and successfully applied in the synthesis of optically pure 1,2,3-trisubstituted cyclopropanes employing sulfoxonium ylides with α,β-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles has been developed, affording the corresponding adducts in 88-98% yields with up to 99% enantioselectivity and >20:1 dr under mild conditions with broad scope. In addition, a scale-up experiment and the synthetic transformations of the cycloadducts further highlighted the synthetic utility.

Abstract:Ru(II)-catalyzed enantioselective C–H functionalization involving an enantiodetermining C–H cleavage step remains undeveloped. Here we describe a Ru(II)-catalyzed enantioselective C–H activation/annulation of sulfoximines with α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides using a novel class of chiral binaphthyl monocarboxylic acids as chiral ligands, which can be easily and modularly prepared from 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-dicarboxylic acid. A broad range of sulfur-stereogenic sulfoximines were prepared in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 99% ee) via desymmetrization, kinetic resolution, and parallel kinetic resolution. Abstract:Herein, multiple types of chiral Os(II) complexes have been designed to address the appealing yet challenging asymmetric C(sp3)-H functionalization, among which the Os(II)/Salox species is found to be the most efficient for precise stereocontrol in realizing the asymmetric C(sp3)-H amidation. As exemplified by the enantioenriched pyrrolidinone synthesis, such tailored Os(II)/Salox catalyst efficiently enables an intramolecular site-/enantioselective C(sp3)-H amidation in the γ-position of dioxazolone substrates, in which benzyl, propargyl and allyl groups bearing various substituted forms are well compatible, affording the corresponding chiral γ-lactam products with good er values (up to 99:1) and diverse functionality (> 35 examples). The unique performance advantage of the developed chiral Os(II)/Salox system in terms of the catalytic energy profile and the chiral induction has been further clarified by integrated experimental and computational studies.

Abstract:Organic molecules bearing chiral sulfur stereocenters exert a great impact on asymmetric catalysis and synthesis, chiral drugs, and chiral materials. Compared with acyclic ones, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of thio-heterocycles has largely lagged behind due to the lack of efficient synthetic strategies. Here we establish the first modular platform to access chiral thio-oxazolidinones via Pd-catalyzed asymmetric [3+2] annulations of vinylethylene carbonates with sulfinylanilines. This protocol is featured by readily available starting materials, and high enantio- and diastereoselectivity. In particular, an unusual effect of a non-chiral supporting ligand on the diastereoselectivity was observed. Possible reaction mechanisms and stereocontrol models were proposed.

Abstract:β-Chiral sulfones are structural motifs widely found in natural products and bioactive molecules, while also serving as important intermediates for the synthesis of valuable chiral scaffolds. In contrast to the rapid growth of sulfur dioxide insertion chemistry over the last decade, enantioselective catalytic variants for accessing β-chiral sulfones, especially those bearing a quaternary carbon stereocenter, remain rare. Herein, we report an enantioselective copper/bisoxazoline catalyzed oxysulfonylation of alkenes to yield isoxazolinyl-containing β-chiral sulfones bearing quaternary carbon stereocenters with moderate to excellent yields and up to 96:4 er. The advantage and irreplaceability of this sulfur dioxide insertion catalytic system have been demonstrated by achieving transformations clearly unavailable with the previously reported sulfonyl chloride system. Additionally, the recoverability of the new-developed bisoxazoline ligand L9 and its reusability without any erosion of the catalytic activity and enantioselectivity further demonstrate the usefulness of the protocol.

Abstract:A well-defined tridentate chiral sulfoxide-N-olefin ligand has been designed and applied in rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitutions of racemic allylic carbonates, providing the branched allylic products in good yields with good to high enantioselectivities and excellent regioselectivities. This reaction mechanism, which involves the possible hemilability of olefin coordination on sulfoxide-N-olefin hybrid ligands with rhodium, is elaborated as well.

Abstract:Catalytic asymmetric sulfenylation of 3-substituted oxindoles has been developed through efficient catalysis by tartaric acid derived chiral iminophosphoranes. With N-(phenylthio)phthalimide as the sulfur source, a wide range of optically active 3-phenylthiooxindoles were obtained in excellent yields (90-99%) and good enantiomeric excess (up to 90% ee). Interestingly, 3-aryl and 3-methyl substituted oxindoles afforded sulfenylated products in S-configuration, whereas substituted oxindoles with 3-arylidene or 3-isobutyl substituents gave the corresponding R-configured sulfenylated products.

Abstract:As the aza-analogues of sulfoxides, sulfilimines bearing S(IV) stereogenic centers hold tremendous potential in synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. However, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of chiral sulfilimines are much less explored compared with chiral sulfoxides. In addition to the well-established asymmetric imidation of sulfides, catalytic enantioselective sulfur functionalization of sulfenamides has received increasing attention and developed rapidly over the past two years, which provides an efficient and alternative approach to chiral sulfilimine synthesis. This Highlight article summarizes and discusses the most recent advances in the catalytic asymmetric S-C bond-forming reactions for the preparation of chiral sulfilimines from sulfenamides.

Abstract:Enantioselective intermolecular three-component oxysulfenylations of alkenes with phenols and alcohols as O-nucleophiles were achieved using chiral BINAM-derived sulfide/phosphoric acid as the co-catalyst. Notably, chiral BINAM-derived sulfide/phosphoric acid co-catalysis was first explored to successfully catalyze highly enantioselective transformation. A variety of sulfur-containing benzylic aryl ethers and benzylic alkyl ethers, which contained two contiguous chiral stereocenters, were obtained readily in moderate to excellent yields with high to excellent enantioselectivities. This protocol featured a broad substrate scope with excellent functional group tolerance and high chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivity. Computational studies were performed to explain the origin of the high selectivity. Additionally, the calculation results indicated that the supposed commonly racemization "olefin-to-olefin" transfer process of thiiranium ion did not occur in this system. [GRAPHICS] .
