Abstract:One new compound, 2H, 3H-cyclopent[b] furo [2,3:4,5] naphtho [2,4-d] heptlactone-[3,7] furan-6aceticacid, 3-(acetyloxy)-8-(3-furyl)-2a, 4a, 4b, 4c,5,5a, 6, 6a, 8, 9,9a, 10a,10b-13 hydrogen-2a,5a,6a,5-tetramethyl-3-[[(2E)-2-methyl-1-oxo-2-butenyl]oxy]-methyl ester, named azadirachta R (1), along with 10 known ones, Azadirachta A, AZ-B, AZ-D, AZ-H, AZ-I, nimbin, deacetylnimbin, salannin, deacetylsalannin and azadiradione were isolated from the crude extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) seeds, which were determined by UV, IR, HR-ESI-MS and NMR data analyses. According to the in vitro antibacterial activity experimental results, this compound showed good antibacterial activity to two bacteria, the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration of compound 1 to two kinds of bacteria are 50 and 25mg/L, respectively, which were determined by resazurin colour-micro-dilution method. The experimental results provide a theoretical basis for the comprehensive utilisation of azadirachtin compounds in the future.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Schicagenins A-C (1-3), three unprecedented nortriterpenoids characterized with a tetracyclic oxa-cage motif and C(9) side chain, were discovered from the leaves and stems of Schisandra chinensis. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute stereochemistries were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and CD experiments. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of 1-3 was also discussed.

Abstract:Three unique nortriterpenoids, schilancitrilactones A-C (1-3), were isolated from the stems of Schisandra lancifolia . Compound 1 possesses a 5/5/7/5/5/5-fused hexacyclic ring system with a C(29) backbone, while 2 and 3 feature a C(27) skeleton with a 5/7/5/5/5-fused pentacyclic ring system. Their absolute stereochemistries were established by CD and single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Compound 3 showed anti-HIV-1 activity with an EC(50) value of 27.54 μg/mL, and 1 exhibited antifeedant activity at 15.73 μg/cm(2).

Abstract:Twelve new nortriterpenoids, namely wuweizidilactones J-P (1-7), schindilactones I-K (8-10), preschisanartanin N (11), and schisdilactone J (12), as well as 23 known analogues, were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra chinensis. The absolute configurations of 1 and 11 were established by calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra and that of 7 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The absolute configurations of 2-6, 8, and 9 were determined by an empirical comparison of their experimental ECD spectra with that of 1. It is the first time that the ECD spectra of 18(13 -> 14)-abeoschiartane-, 18-norschiartane-, and schisanartane-type nortriterpenoids possessing an alpha,beta-unsaturated-gamma-lactone moiety are presented, this method providing an alternative means of obtaining absolute configurational assignments for these types of nortriterpenoids. All isolates were evaluated for their anti-acetylcholinesterase and anti-butyrylcholinesterase activities, and compounds 8, 13, 23, and 31 show anti-acetylcholinesterase activity at concentrations of 50 mu M, with 12.7, 10.7, 16.6, and 32.1% inhibition, respectively. Abstract:Six novel Ia(3)-type cyclopeptide alkaloids (1-6) were isolated from stems of Ziziphus apetala. Compound 5 and the known compounds mauritine A (7) and mauritine F (8) were isolated from the roots. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods. The total alkaloids from the roots and the isolated cyclopeptide alkaloids were tested for antidepressant behavior on mice, cytotoxicity, and 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta-HSD) inhibition in vitro. Only mauritine A (7) showed inhibitory activity on 11 beta-HSD1, with IC50 values of 52.0 (human) and 31.2 mu g/mL (mouse).

Abstract:Two new guaiacene-type sesquiterpenes 13 alpha-dihydroixerin acid, ixerin acid and one new secoguaiacene-type sesquiterpene secoixerin Z, along with four known compounds, were separated from ethanol extract of Ixeris sonchifolia. The structures were determined based on the detailed spectroscopic and physicochemical methods. The cytotoxic activity of the isolates was tested against A549 cells. Among them, compound 3 exhibited potent cytotoxicity against A549 cells with the IC50 of 5.6 +/- 0.9 mu M. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:One new and eight known ceanothane- and lupane-type triterpenes were isolated from the root bark of Ziziphus cambodiana PIERRE (Rhamnaceae). Based on spectral analyses, the structure of the new compound was elucidated as 3-O-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoyl)ceanothic acid (3-O-vanillylceanothic acid) (1), while the known compounds were identified as lupeol (2), betulinaldehyde (3), betulinic acid (4), 2-O-E-p-coumaroyl alphitolic acid (5), alphitolic acid (6), zizyberanalic acid (7), zizyberenalic acid (8) and ceanothic acid (9). Compounds 1, 5 and 8 exhibited significant in vitro antiplasmodial activity against the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, with inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 3.7, 0.9 and 3.0 microg/ml, respectively. Compounds 1 and 3-8 showed antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis with respective MIC values of 25, 25, 25, 12.5, 50, 50 and 100 microg/ml.

Abstract:A new ursane-type triterpenoid, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-Z-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12- en-28-oic-acid (1), together with three known triterpenoids, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-E-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12-en-28-oic-acid (2), 2 alpha, 3 beta, 19 alpha-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic-acid (3), and ursolic acid (4), four known lignans, pinoresinol (5), 9 alpha-hydroxypinoresinol (6), (+)-medioresinol (7), and (+)-kobusin (8), and two steroids, beta-sitosterol (9), and daucosterol (10), were isolated from the whole parts of Teucrium viscidum. Their structures were established by a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, besides comparison with literature data. Compounds 1-4 were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11 beta-HSD1).

Their structures were established by spectral analysis and comparison with the reported data in literatures.

Abstract:From a MeOH extract of powdered roots of Wikstroemia indica, we isolated a new guaian-type sesquiterpene (1) and two known guaian-type sesquiterpenes [oleodaphnal (2), 1alpha,7alpha,10alphaH-guaia-4,11-dien-3-one (3)], together with twelve known compounds: (+)-arctigenin, (+)-matairesinol, (+)-trachelogenin, (+)-nortrachelogenin, (+)-hinokinin, (+)-kusunokinin, 7-methoxycoumarin, 7-hydroxycoumarin (umbelliferone), daphnogitin, daphnoretin, salicifoliol, and (-)-pinoresinol. The structure of compound 1 was determined to be 4,10,11-guaiatrien-3-one-14-oic acid, by the analyses of spectral data.

Abstract:A structurally novel 8,9-seco-eudesma-9,4:8,12-dilactone sesquiterpenoid, chlorajapodiolide (1), a new eudesmane sesquiterpenoid, chlorajapotriol (2), a new lindenane-type sesquiterpenoid dimer, chlorajaponilide I (3), and four known lindenane-type sesquiterpenoid dimers were isolated from the whole plant of Chloranthus japonicus. Their structures were established through extensive analysis of NMR spectroscopic data in combination with mass spectrometry. All compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicities against four human cancer cell lines A549, HCT116, MGC803, and HepG2.
