Abstract:A Ru-catalyzed intermolecular silylation of unreactive, aliphatic C(sp(3))-H bonds has been described for the first time. This protocol features low catalyst loading, a relatively broad substrate spectrum, good functional group tolerance, and no sensitivity to air, which provides a convenient and practical pathway for the construction of C-Si bonds.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed thiolation of unactivated C(sp(2))-H bonds with disulfides employing the PIP directing group was described. This process uses a catalytic nickel catalyst and no metallic oxidants or cocatalysts are required. The reaction tolerates various important functional groups and heteroarenes, providing an efficient synthetic pathway to access diverse diaryl sulfides.

Abstract:This work describes a nickel-catalyzed Ullmann-type thiolation of aryl iodidesunder mild electrochemical conditions. The simple undivided cell with graphene/nickel foam electrode setups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording aryl and alkyl sulfides in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical cross-coupling reaction has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:The nickel-catalyzed β-thioetherification of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bond of propionamides is established with the assistance of 8-aminoquinoline auxiliary, leading to the β-thio carboxylic acid derivatives. A broad range of functional groups is compatible with this thioetherfication reaction. The process represents the first successful example of metal-catalyzed C-S bond formation from unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed coupling reactions are useful tools for synthesizing aryl sulfur compounds. However, conventional transition-metal-catalyzed thiolation of aryl bromides and chlorides typically requires the use of strong base under elevated reaction temperature. Herein, we report the first examples of nickel-catalyzed electrochemical thiolation of aryl bromides and chlorides in the absence of an external base at room temperature using undivided electrochemical cells.

Abstract:A ligand-promoted Rh-III-catalyzed C(sp(2))-H activation/thiolation of benzamides has been developed. Using bidentate mono-N-protected amino acid ligands led to the first example of RhIII-catalyzed aryl thiolation reactions directed by weakly coordinating directing amide groups. The reaction tolerates a broad range of amides and disulfide reagents.

Abstract:Various sulfenylated heteroarenes were synthesized by a copper‐mediated C−H thiolation, which was assisted by a 2‐(pyridin‐2‐yl)isopropylamine (PIP‐amine) directing group. The reaction features a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, ligand‐ and metal‐oxidant‐free conditions, exceptional compatibility with aliphatic disulfides, and excellent yields, providing a highly efficient approach to the biologically important sulfenylated heteroarenes.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, transition-metal catalyzed direct functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds has emerged as an efficient and straightforward strategy for the construction of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds.It provides access to complex molecules via the direct cleavage of C-H bonds without the need of prefunctionalization, rendering this strategy more step-economical and environmentally benign.Recently, tremendous attentions have been devoted to the use of first row-transition metals as most of those metals are naturally abundant, readily available, and inexpensive and have low toxicities in comparison with precious metals.In addition, the exploration of new catalytic systems might lead to the discovery of new mode of reactions.The aim of this review is to give an overview on recent advances in nickel-catalyzed direct functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds, without the discussion of the cleavage of acidic C-H bonds.Firstly, nickel-catalyzed functionalization of C(sp 2 )-H to form new C-C and C-heteroatom bonds is reviewed.Secondly, an overview of Ni-catalyzed C(sp 3 )-H functionalization is provided.In addition, mechanistic hypothesis and general aspects of these reactions have also been summarized.Finally, the limitations and perspectives on nickel-catalyzed C-H functionalization are discussed.

Abstract:Developing innovative methodologies for disulfide preparation is of importance in contemporary organic chemistry. Despite significant advancements in nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling reactions for forming carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds, the synthesis of S-S bonds remains a considerable challenge. In this context, we present a novel approach utilizing nickel catalysts for the reductive cross-coupling of thiosulfonates. This method operates under mild conditions, offering a convenient and efficient pathway to synthesize a wide range of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical disulfides from readily available, bench-stable thiosulfonates with exceptional selectivity. Notably, this approach is highly versatile, allowing for the late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and the preparation of various targeted compounds. A comprehensive mechanistic investigation has been conducted to substantiate the proposed hypothesis.

Abstract:The construction of C(sp 3 )–S bonds through C(sp 3 )–H activation holds significant value in the synthesis of sulfides. However, the vast majority of strategies primarily involve the use of electron-rich sulfur sources (such as sulfinates and thioalcohols) to thiolate activated and thermodynamically favored C(sp 3 )–H bonds. Therefore, further expanding the substrate range of sulfur sources and various C(sp 3 )–H bonds would provide an entry for the synthesis of unique structural molecules. Here, we report a FeCl 3 /HCl synergistic catalytic approach that enables the formation of C(sp 3 )–S bonds via reductive deoxygenation cross-coupling of activated/inert C(sp 3 )–H and aryl/alkyl sulfonyl chlorides without the need for external reductants. Mechanism studies reveal that HCl plays a crucial role in the thiolation of inert C(sp 3 )–H bonds, not only enhancing the catalytic activity of FeCl 3 but also forming electron donor–acceptor (EDA) complexes with sulfonyl chlorides.

Abstract:Herein, a facile and efficient thiolation method is presented, involving Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of readily available disulfides with diverse bromides, promoted by ball milling. This Ni-catalyzed modular approach demonstrates excellent functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope, including acidic molecules. Furthermore, the plausible mechanism was extensively investigated and proposed, incorporating multiple valence states of Ni to complete the catalytic cycle. Moreover, green factors were compared with conventional solution methods. The practicality of this transformation is thus demonstrated for the synthesis of sulfur-containing organic compounds, highlighting its high efficiency and eco-friendliness.

Abstract:We present the first example of nickel(II)-catalyzed β-C(sp3)-H thiolation of ketones, employing 2-hydrazinopyridine as an efficient directing group. This approach enables the thiolation of a diverse array of ketones at the β-position. The straightforward installation and subsequent removal of the directing group significantly enhance the synthetic versatility and practicality of this transformation.

Abstract:Herein, an electrochemically driven NiH-catalyzed reductive coupling of alkyl halides and alkyl alkenes for the construction of Csp3-Csp3 bonds is firstly reported. Notably, alkyl halides serve dual function as coupling substrates and as hydrogen sources to generate NiH species under electrochemical conditions. The tunable nature of this reaction is realized by introducing an intramolecular coordinating group to the substrate, where the product can be easily adjusted to give the desired branched product. The method proceeds under mild conditions, exhibits a broad substrate scope, and affords moderate to excellent yields with over 70 examples, including late-stage modification of natural products and drug derivatives. Mechanistic insights offer evidence for an electrochemically driven coupling process. The sp3-carbon-halogen bonds can be activated through single electron transfer (SET) by the nickel catalyst in its low valence state, generated by cathodic reduction, and the generation of NiH species from alkyl halides is pivotal to this transformation.
