Abstract:The venerable Friedel-Crafts reaction appends alkyl or acyl groups to aromatic rings through alkyl or acyl cation equivalents typically generated by Lewis acids. We show that phenyl cation equivalents, generated from otherwise unreactive aryl fluorides, allow extension of the Friedel-Crafts reaction to intramolecular aryl couplings. The enabling feature of this reaction is the exchange of carbon-fluorine for silicon-fluorine bond enthalpies; the reaction is activated by an intermediate silyl cation. Catalytic quantities of protons or silyl cations paired with weakly coordinating carborane counterions initiate the reactions, after which proton transfer in the final aromatization step regenerates the active silyl cation species by protodesilylation of a quaternary silane. The methodology allows the high-yield formation of a range of tailored polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and graphene fragments.

Abstract:A general route for the synthesis of an aryl(trialkyl)silane reagent, aryl[2-(hydroxypro-2-yl)cyclohexyl]dimethylsilane, is demonstrated. By using a carbonate salt as an activator, the robust aryl(trialkyl)silane promotes nickel-catalyzed aryl-aryl cross-coupling reactions with aryl tosylates in a fluoride-free and highly chemoselective manner. A reusable cyclic silyl ether was also quantitatively recovered.

Abstract:The first cross-coupling reaction between aryl silanes and aryl boronic acids is described. This transformation represents one of the very few examples of coupling reactions between two nucleophilic organometallic reagents and provides a new method for the formation of biaryl compounds. The successful development of this reaction was enabled by the use of commercially available 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) as the ligand. A small amount of BINAP (3 mol %) was sufficient to suppress the formation of the homocoupling products, and the reaction yielded the cross-coupling products with high selectivity under mild conditions, even when the ratio of the two coupling partners was 1:1.

Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of 1-aryltriazenes with arylboronic acids catalyzed by a recyclable polymer-supported Pd-NHC complex catalyst has been realized for the first time. The polymer-supported catalyst can be re-used several times still retaining high activity for this transformation. Various aryltriazenes were investigated as electrophilic substrates at room temperature to give biaryls in good to excellent yields and showed good chemoselectivity over aryl halides in the reactions.

Abstract:The Hiyama coupling reaction has emerged as a wildly used method for the construction of C-C bonds, especially in the fields of aryl-aryl and aryl-alkenyl coupling reactions. In general, this protocol highly relies on reactive but unstable silicon reagents such as R-SiF3 and R-Si(OMe)(3). The development of Hiyama coupling reaction involving stable organosilanes is in high demand. In this manuscript, a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of aryl vinylsilanes and aryl halides is reported, leading to the formation of Ar-Ar bonds. The reaction has shown good functional group compatibility and offered convenient access to biaryl compounds.

Abstract:Mild conditions have been developed to achieve the Pd(OAc)(2)-catalyzed fluoride-free cross-coupling between the aryl bromides and arylsiloxanes in good to high yields in aqueous medium. The success of the reactions requires the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and 3 equiv of sodium hydroxide. The product was easily separated with ethyl ether extraction, and the catalytic system can be reused eight times with high efficiency.

Abstract:The methods for the cross‐coupling of aryl(trialkyl)silanes are long‐standing challenges due to the extreme inertness of C‐Si(R3) bond, though the reaction is environmentally friendly and highly regioselective to synthesize biaryls. Herein, we report a copper‐catalyzed cross‐coupling of aryl(trialkyl)silanes and aryl via a radical mechanism. The reaction proceeds efficiently with aryl sulfonium salts as limiting reagents, exhibits broad substrate scope, and provides an important synthetic strategy to acquire biaryls, exemplified by unsymmetrical fluorescence probes and late‐stage functionalization of drugs. Of note, the experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies revealed a radical mechanism where the copper catalyst and CsF play critical roles on the radical generation and desilylation process.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of arenes bearing two or more potential coupling sites is often challenging because of the chemoselectivity issue. If orthogonal cross-couplings were applicable, one can develop a synthetically useful approach for consecutive functionalization of the starting arenes compounds. We herein reported a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of triazenyl-substituted aryl bromides catalyzed by PdCl2(PCy3)2/PPh3 under basic conditions. The resultant polyfunctionalized aryl triazenes could undergo Suzuki-Miyaura couplings under acidic conditions or be converted to many other functionalized arenes. This orthogonal coupling strategy allows for a sequential functionalization of arenes with same type of nucleophilic reagents toward the synthesis of diverse biaryls and teraryls.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of sulfoxonium ylides and benzyl bromides has been developed, which has potential safety advantages over previous carbene coupling reactions using either diazo compounds or their in situ precursors. This reaction affords polysubstituted olefins, and features good substrate tolerance and is suitable for late-stage modification of biologically active molecules. Abstract:A ligand-free Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of substituted allyl(trimethyl)silanes with aryl iodides enabled by silver salts was developed. This reaction delivered allylic arenes chemoselectively and regioselectively. The study suggested that the reaction might proceed through oxidative addition of Arl to Pd(0) followed by halide abstraction to give an electrophilic complex ArPdX, which further reacted with allyl(trimethyl) silanes via electrophilic addition/desilylation/reductive elimination to afford the allyl-aryl coupling products.
